As I write this, I have a beard that makes me resemble Moses. Or Abe Lincoln. Or Ted Kaczynski. I’ve been called all three.
I loved writing this book. Well, not the actual writing part. I don’t enjoy sitting alone in front of a laptop with just the sounds of the clicking keyboard to keep me company. I find it isolating and painful. But I loved researching and living and talking about this book. I loved meeting Amish people and Hasidic Jews, I loved diving deep into 2,000 year old texts, and I loved growing a beard (even if my wife hated it; apologies to Julie)
Years later, the project continues to have a huge effect on me in dozens of ways. I’m more grateful. I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of rituals and

I got an unexpected email today. It arrived in my in-box at 1:07 p.m. from a guy named Kevin Roose.
I’m still friends with my former intern and biblical bread-baker, Kevin Roose. And he has had quite a journey since this book! While he was working for me, I took Kevin on my trip to Jerry Falwell’s church in Virginia. Kevin found it fascinating. On the way back to New York, Kevin said he had a book idea: What if he transferred from Brown, where he was a sophomore, to Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University for a semester. Julie ordered me Charlton Heston’s The Ten Commandments on Netflix. Man, I hadn’t remembered it being quite so gloriously cheesy as it is.
A few years ago, CBS made a sitcom inspired by “The Year of Living Biblically.” It was called “Living Biblically” and it lasted thirteen episodes. In the biblical spirit, I can say I’m grateful for the amazing experience. It was a blast to go and meet the cast and crew and nosh on craft services all day. I should also say that the writers and actors were immensely talented and funny. That said, I did not like the show itself. I tried to make the book as nuanced as possible, showing the benefits and perils of religion and interpreting the Bible. On a 22-minute sitcom, there is little room for
