The only photos I know were taken from the first edition of his memoir, which was published in the 1930s and so would remain within copyright. The IWM has a tribute page here https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.o... but the two photos there were contributed privately. There was an American television documentary with Jay Winter about WWI that came out in the 1990s, quoting Lucy extensively and showing photos of him, which would suggest it is possible to get and use them! But where? Maybe the IWM would know? Best wishes to you in lovely Cork - my wife and I honeymooned through there in 2018. - Ed(less)

Boxer Benny Leonard and the Lost Battalion

An episode from my upcoming book: Never in Finer Company The Men of the Lost Battalion and the Transformation of America by Edward G. Lengel

Benny Leonard was born in a Jewish ghetto on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in 1896. Just a month after his twenty-first birthday, he became lightweight champion of the world. Next, he taught New York City’s own 77th “Metropolitan” Division how to fight.

The United States entered World War I by declaring war on Germany on April 6, 1917. That was the easy part. Ame Read more of this blog post »

Topics Mentioning This Author

G.K. Chesterton
“A dead thing can go with the stream, but only a living thing can go against it.”
G.K. Chesterton, The Everlasting Man

H.P. Lovecraft
“There are not many persons who know what wonders are opened to them in the stories and visions of their youth; for when as children we learn and dream, we think but half-formed thoughts, and when as men we try to remember, we are dulled and prosaic with the poison of life. But some of us awake in the night with strange phantasms of enchanted hills and gardens, of fountains that sing in the sun, of golden cliffs overhanging murmuring seas, of plains that stretch down to sleeping cities of bronze and stone, and of shadowy companies of heroes that ride caparisoned white horses along the edges of thick forests; and then we know that we have looked back through the ivory gates into that world of wonder which was ours before we were wise and unhappy.”
Howard Phillips Lovecraft

Joseph Conrad
“No, it is impossible; it is impossible to convey the life-sensation of any given epoch of one’s existence--that which makes its truth, its meaning--its subtle and penetrating essence. It is impossible. We live, as we dream--alone.”
Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness

Raymond Chandler
“Without magic, there is no art. Without art, there is no idealism. Without idealism, there is no integrity. Without integrity, there is nothing but production.”
Raymond Chandler

Albert Einstein
“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
Albert Einstein
