Edward Aubry is a graduate of Wesleyan University, with a degree in music composition. Improbably, this preceded a career as a teacher of high school mathematics and creative writing. He now lives in rural Pennsylvania with his wife and three spectacular daughters, where he fills his non-teaching hours spinning tales of time-travel, wise-cracking pixies, and an assortment of other impossible things.

UnHappenings was originally intended to be a standalone. Then one of my students read an early draft, and asked me a question that grew into an idea for a companion novel, which is now a work in progress. The second book will be more of a spin-off than a sequel.(less)

Static Mayhem will be reissued this July. The original version went out of print because I made some changes when it switched publishers, most notably removing the first section and expanding it into what is now Prelude to Mayhem. If you are interested in the whole story of that transformation, I wrote a blog post about it last year.

News

Hello all,

With mixed feelings, I must announce that Curiosity Quills Press and I have parted company. As of a few weeks ago, all of my books with them are out of print, apart from audiobooks, which continue to be available through Audible and Tantor. The separation was on good terms, as these things go, and CQ has granted me license to use the covers they created as I move forward to self publish. Read more of this blog post »

I get why people liked this book, but there were just too many eye-rolling moments in it for me. Cringy prose, plot twists that were either telegraphed or just not that interesting, and a dreary, head-scratching trial scene at the climax. This story ...more

“a man travels back in time and murders his grandfather, thus preventing his own birth, the universe simply carries on with the grandfather dead, the time traveler forever unborn, and it does so without a care in the world as to how that murder was possible in the first place. No one will ever be aware that history has changed, and no one will ever be aware that he was supposed to have offspring, and grand-offspring. No one, that is, except the time traveler. That person, who should now never have existed, continues to exist anyway. And again, the universe just shrugs it off, insisting—and rightly so—that it owes no one any explanation for its conduct.”
Edward Aubry, UnHappenings

“stomach briefly reminded me that alcohol is poisonous, but got over it. This”
Edward Aubry, UnHappenings

“Okay, I can answer that one. It’s a cognitive dissonance side effect of the jump field. No one expects people to materialize out of thin air, or disappear into it, so when they see it happen, their brains adjust to believe that we must have already been there. The effect is more dramatic for backward travel than forward travel, by two orders of magnitude. And it doesn’t work on anyone who is expecting you, or anyone who is staring at the exact spot where you materialize. There are also a few people who aren’t affected at all, but it’s something like one hundredth of a percent of the population.”

“because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff. Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”
