My first book, We Were the Lucky Ones, was inspired by a family reunion in 2000 that opened my eyes to the astounding, untold wartime stories of my grandfather, his parents and his siblings. In 2008, I set off to research and record this piece of my ancestry and a decade later, We Were the Lucky Ones was born. The book has been published in over twenty languages and has been adapted for television by Hulu as an eight-part limited series.

My second book, One Good Thing, is a historical novel set in Holocaust-era Italy. Told from the perspective of of a young woman forced to trust her inner strength as she navigates a world turned upside-down, One Good Thing is a story of friendship and motherhood, love and survival. I'm writing my next book as we speak! It'll fall into the historical fiction genre, with one storyline set in WWII Italy, and another set in the 2000's, about a granddaughter who spends a month with her grandmother, coming to discover a life-changing piece of her Holocaust-era past. Looking forward to drawing from my own experiences in unearthing my ancestral past as I write :) (less)

David Benioff's "City of Thieves" reads like a film - you'll fly through it. Julie Orringer's "The Invisible Bridge" (based on her grandfather, a young Hungarian Jew studying in Paris @ the start of the war) is long but absolutely gorgeous. Some other favorites are Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief," Anthony Doerr's "All the Light We Cannot See," and Leon Uris's "Mila 18." I also loved Jillian Cantor's "Margot" (an imagining of what might have happened to Anne Frank's sister Margaret, had she survived). What are some of your favorites?? (less)

“The exercise of deciding where to go next is difficult. Because next most likely means a new forever.”
Georgia Hunter, We Were the Lucky Ones

“The exercise of deciding where to go next is difficult. Because next most likely means a new forever. It means thinking about where to settle. Where to start over. During the war, their options were fewer, the stakes higher, their mission singular. It was simple, in a way. Keep your chin down, your guard up. Stay one step ahead. Stay alive for one more day. Don't let the enemy win. To think about a long-term plan feels complicated, and burdensome, like flexing an atrophied muscle.”
Georgia Hunter, We Were the Lucky Ones

“What matters, she tells herself, is that even on the hardest days, when the grief is so heavy she can barely breathe, she must carry on. She must get up, get dressed, and go to work. She will take each day as it comes. She will keep moving.”
