Joseph Finder is the author of the forthcoming novel JUDGMENT and fourteen other novels, many of them New York Times bestsellers, published in 35 countries around the world. His book HIGH CRIMES was adapted into a movie starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd; PARANOIA was made into the Harrison Ford/Gary Oldman film.

He was born in Chicago, lived in the Philippines, Afghanistan, Washington State, and upstate New York. His novels have won numerous awards, including the Strand Critics award, the Barry Award, and the International Thriller Writers’ Thriller Award for best novel. His first novel, THE MOSCOW CLUB, was named by Publishers Weekly as one of the 10 best spy novels of all time.

I ripped through HIGH CRIMES and COMPANY MAN in two days. You write excellent, complex characters and have good pacing and structure in your books. I am looking forward to your new baby, SUSPICION. What draws you to thrillers? And would you ever consider writing outside the box? Like a good old-fashioned ghost or horror story?

I write thrillers because thrillers are what I liked to read, when I first discovered the world of adult books. I read the James Bond books early on (and even tried to write my own - teenaged fan fiction! - but when on a college trip, somebody had a Ludlum novel, and I started reading and was completely hooked. It might have been partly a Walter Mitty-type fantasy: I was just a kid from the suburbs, and there was Jason Bourne dashing around the world, dodging bullets and killing bad guys and dealing with something unexpected every minute of the day. (This is also what I love about "24.")

I read a lot more widely — and actually read a lot of literary fiction — but in terms of plotting and the work of writing a book, the thriller frame is the one I like best. Ghost stories fascinate me, but a good ghost story is really, really hard to write: I look at Shirley Jackson and Stephen King, and I'm not sure I could do what they do. (less)

Joseph Finder answered Arnold Kanarek's question: Just read Vanished and I really enjoyed it. I will follow Nick Heller onto his next case in Buried Secrets. I am sorry about your dog. The great author Dean Koontz had a famous Golden Retriever who died and he moved on to get another dog. (Maybe his wife can convince yours.) You have many characters from your other books, so why did you choose to only do a series on Nick Heller? Thanks for the kind words! My wife and I have since adopted another dog, a mutt named Millie who brightens every day. Nick Heller was my first series character, and it took me a long time to decide I wanted to create one.
