I could lie to y'all and tell you my name is Dorothy Gale, and I've been to OZ--I would have done that as a child. Back then, I would've even gone so far as to introduce you to my "imaginary friend, Caroline." No joke! My mom thought she had a real nutterbutter for a daughter. But, I was obsessed!

And no, growing up hasn't made me leave OZ either. No, indeed. It actually helped me to discover other worlds, such as Narnia, Neverland, and Wonderland. But best of all, I learned at a very young age (around the age of four or five) that I didn't need the places already created in books. Since then, I've spent a lot of time visiting them. I let them tell me their stories, and then I write them down verbatim. So here I am--some thirty-odd years down the road, sharing these crazy universes with the world, and I couldn't be happier.

I grew up in Oregon, which, I suppose, is probably why my imagination is so vast. We didn't have a whole lot to do growing up. But nature was all around. Wide, empty nature, just begging to be explored. So I spent all my time in the woods, at the beach, or in my backyard performing plays with my sister (who is now an actress) and my neighborhood friends. I wrote many of those plays, cast them, and directed them, while my sister starred in the leading roles.

As I grew up, those back woods became kind of boring. I'd already explored them all. So, I ventured out of Oregon and made my way to Florida, where I worked at Walt Disney World, and Universal Studios. Then, I moved to Connecticut, where I earned a BA. in Creative Writing at the University of Hartford (and learned that I'm actually a children's writer, not an adult literary writer; and I also learned to write poetry--what an ordeal!). After college, I moved around a few more times (NYC, Los Angeles, and back to CT where I earned a masters in Education). I now live in Portland, Oregon with my two cats, Meeshtar (he named himself that, by the way), and Sammy, where I'm currently working on my debut children's novel, Meeshtar's Adventures in the Meowse House. It seems that the Wizard of Oz was right--there's no place like home.
