Join me and my old friend Alden Jones, distinguished fellow novelist and creative writing professor, for the 5th edition of the Cuba Writers Program: a fun, informal, dynamic, off-the-beaten track nine-day literary adventure in Havana and on the island’s southern coast.

Hoo boy. This is the kind of book that you pick up and start reading and can't put down and wish you could. Extremely well-written, and at the same time hard to read because it just feels all too familiar and plausible. I imagine many people won't wa ...more

An early career novel for Follett, was drawn to read it after taking his BBC master class, which was excellent. And the novel? Excellent too, in my view. Nearly perfect in terms of pace and readability I'd say, and it manages to be tense and propulsi ...more

Another great Peter Heller book, with the author's trademark skills in creating a suspenseful, page-turning novel in a wilderness setting on full display. This one struck me as particularly good, in part because of the focus on Yellowstone's wolves. ...more

Rebecca Solnit
“Read good writing, and don’t live in the present. Live in the deep past, with the language of the Koran or the Mabinogion or Mother Goose or Dickens or Dickinson or Baldwin or whatever speaks to you deeply. Literature is not high school and it’s not actually necessary to know what everyone around you is wearing, in terms of style, and being influenced by people who are being published in this very moment is going to make you look just like them, which is probably not a good long-term goal for being yourself or making a meaningful contribution. At any point in history there is a great tide of writers of similar tone, they wash in, they wash out, the strange starfish stay behind, and the conches.”
Rebecca Solnit

Ernest Hemingway
“All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you: the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was. If you can get so that you can give that to people, then you are a writer.”
Ernest Hemingway

Philip Pullman
“After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”
Philip Pullman

Robert Stone
“It’s hard to stay away from religion when you mess with acid.”
Robert Stone

Joseph Campbell
“Sit in a room and read--and read and read. And read the right books by the right people. Your mind is brought onto that level, and you have a nice, mild, slow-burning rapture all the time.”
Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth
