Risdaverse #10

When She's Fearless

Rate this book
After being stolen from Earth, I learned that I could live each day in fear...or I could meet life head-on and unafraid. I chose the latter...

Which is why, when I find a terrifyingly huge cat-alien male hip-deep in my favorite fishing spot, I don't run away in fear.

I introduce myself.

Is it reckless? Sure. But I've never met anyone quite like the feline Hrrrusek. And when I catch him marking my door as his territory, instead of calling for help...

I invite him in.

This instalove novella features a heroine who's having fun being reckless and a hero who doesn't know what hit him. All vibes, very little plot. Enjoy!

➕ 𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕀 𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖𝕕:

Both main characters are plus sized.

The heroine is not defined by her size/shape and she is more or less confident in her skin/size and in herself.

A heroine that is bold in everything from her body to how she lives her life, but she also enjoys sex and has no problem communicating what she wants with her partner.

The cover. (It shows representation, Plus size heroine in the story and with a plus size model on the cover)💯👍👏 🙌

The hero was a cinnamon roll hero.

A hero who is not a sex god, but a little clueless but takes direction and coaching very well and is a quick study at it.

The hero was not a Mesakkah or Sa-khui but a Praxiian.

The heroine had a warm/friendly/bright attitude/personality and embraced life and was not angsty about her past trauma.
(It would have been interesting to read about how the heroine handled her past trauma and how it led to where and how she lived her life now.)

No talk about babies or pregnancy.

➖ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:

The subtle internalized body-shaming the hero had about himself.
(Kind of reversed roles for heroine and hero … the heroine is not bothered by her size or defined by it she is just plus sized and is totally fine with that… it is the Hero who is somewhat insecure about being plus sized.)

The story is too short.

Thin and rushed plot.

The main characters needed more depth and more character development and a longer story.

Too much insta-lust and insta love.
(The romantic build up and chemistry was very rushed.)

The heroine was a little too fearless/reckless.

The sex scenes were a little bit underwhelming and not as good as in other books by this auhtor.

A very cute novella! It wasn't layered enough to be a stand out to me in the series, but I did love seeing a character like Chelsea & how she has responded to trauma, and bonus points for the gorgeous cover

Not my favorite Risdaverse book, but I still had a good time. Chelsea (h) is a little too fearless for me, although I tried not to judge her too much for how she processed her trauma from being a slave. I loved Hrrrusek (H) as a big cat alien who was immediately fascinated with Chelsea's bright personality. Sure he expresses that interest by jacking off on her door and accidentally on her, but he was a giant sweetheart. A giant sweetheart who's also not the best in bed, but embraced being coached, which was a fun detail. And if you've read When She Purrs, there's a scene that involves the plant that makes these cat aliens go sexually bonkers. This one was a lower angst read with just a touch close to the end, but the angst isn't dragged out. The epilogue is 6 months in the future and was a sweet check-in of them on her farm and happy with a lead-in to the next book as well. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and neither were virgins.

When She’s Fearless is a novella part of the Risdaverse series by Ruby Dixon. I’ve been enjoying this series and was excited to see this one get an audio release!

This is short, novella length and we get plus size rep for both main characters! The story moves quickly and it was just a cute, fun time. I do think I needed a bit more time with these characters, so not one of my favorites in this series, but still a fun addition! Chelsea owns a farm on Risda III, the farming planet this series has taken place on, and she meets Hrrrusek (who is one of the cat-like aliens). He’s on her property and she ends up inviting him in and the story kicks off from there!

Super sweet

I loved that both MCs were over weight, and loved that the FMC was confident in her weight. I also adored that they had such open communication during sexy time and that he wasn’t amazing at first. I love little doses of reality.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: discussion trafficking and torture (brief and fairly vague)

Cute sci-fi romance novella about a woman who has been through a lot and is now determined to not let fear control her, and a nice guy that is drawn to her.

Personally, I wish the hero wasn't Praxiian, because it's strange to read about cat-guys as love-interests.

Chelsea definitivamente es diferente a la mayoría de las mujeres en Risda, me entretuvo bastante y me enterneció su actitud positiva. Hrrrusek me pareció … bueno, intenso pero bueno lol.

I just love the Risdaverse series, and can always count on Ruby Dixon to bring a fun story with a guaranteed HEA. Her books are the ultimate palate cleanse for me, and I appreciated the plus rep with both characters, and the cinnamon roll hero in a Praxiian.

Quickish Review

This novella is a bit of fluff that just hit the spot. Loved that the FMC is unabashedly big, and while she's suffered as a slave, she's decided to not live in fear, because she's gone through the worst and come out the other side. There's all smushy feelings, no real tension and it's Ruby Dixon, and I love her writing, so I was happy. Looking forward to whatever she releases next.

Dixon has an issue with going too far in these series to the point that they lose their spark along the way. These are getting tired, like her other way-too-long-series. I'll read one here or there, but nothing is terribly new or unexpected in them anymore.

What saved this for me was the lead and getting a less-common human lead who's decided to embrace her current life rather than being angsty and a total pill about her situation—I would have liked to have seen more handling of her past and how it led to where she is in life now, but I was so happy to not see yet another severely traumatized human woman who then acts stubborn the entire time. And it was a treat to get a fat lead whose entire personality isn't fretting constantly about her fatness and being rejected...and genuinely enjoys sex and is communicative. Okay, and a third thing to love about this one: a male lead who isn't a sex god but takes direction very well.

2.5/5 rounding up to 3

Holy cow I hateddddd this FMC. She was so fucking annoying. She just decided to be fearless? She's seen it all (and has been extensively tortured) so now she doesn't have any fear? What a load of bullshit. And so dumb? She was written to be as sunny as sunshines gets. Giggles, carefree attitude, laughs when a guy jerks off on her, she quirky and free y'all! Fucking dumbbbbbbb.

I also got super tried of reading about descriptions of her size. I get it, she's a big girl, why does every other fucking paragraph have to remind us and harp on it? Whenever there's an extra curvy character, I feel like authors beat it to death. Don't ever forget she's fat!!!! But in a good way!!!! Look at her big thighs! The giant globes of her ass! Those humongous tits!!!! She's got curves! Did I mention she's big??? He's fat too, and all that is mentioned is his tummy. Like are you fucking kidding me with this absolute shit show of a double standard. Get out of here with that shit.

I am almost always disappointed by these. Such a bummer

It’s nice to have a friend and a partner and a lover, and Hrrrusek feels like all three of those things for me.

This was so freaking cute but sooooo short. Not because the story wasn’t good or complete but because I wanted more. Chelsea was so brave and kind and amazing. I’m so glad she found an equally amazing parter. Hrrrusek was also very kind and amazing. I’m glad the brothers staid and I can’t wait for the next book. What will his brother get up to? I feel like both brothers are kind but Jrrru is a little mischievous, a little bit of a scoundrel. I feel like he might get into some trouble.

This was absolutely adorable but Chelsea has not been a favorite of mine in these series!! I do love our MC’s brother Jrruu though he made me want to smile on several occasions and he was loyal through it all.

I loved this book because it adds to the whole feel of Risda III but it doesn’t have the excessive trauma that we usually see. The heroine has a horrible past but she chooses to live her life instead of existing in her fears.

Also both characters and plus size 👌🏽😘🧁!! I loved that aspect of the story. They didn’t have to be overly buff or beautiful they were just real with real bodies. Which is always a plus to see in the romance world.

So as always Ruby didn’t miss with this one but I’ve been in this series from the .5’s so I may be a bit biased.

Happy reading everyone !!

I love these short stories from Risda III! Through these I’ve grown quite fond of the Praxiians.

Hrrrusek…that’s a mouthful (in more ways than one), is precious. He’s absolutely adorable in his love for Chelsea. And Chelsea? I loved her insane self. Granted, she’s not insane, she’s just lived a thousand lives and is determined to make this one great.

They were an adorable pair. Ruby packs a punch in these shorties.

I was beyond excited to see a new book in the Risdaverse! Instalust novella that is super fun and adorable. The FMC is all “I’m over my fear response, wanna get dinner?” when she spots a strange cat-alien man in her usual fishing spot, and the MMC is very into her (but confused that she’s also into him). I enjoyed the throwbacks to When She Purrs, which is my favourite of the series (read that one first).

Chelsea is a human woman currently residing in the colony Risda III. She leads a more fearless life after she was able to escape the life of slavery. So when she finds an attractive alien on her property, she doesn't run him off. She welcomes the stranger into her home.

Hrrrusek was super cute!! I just wish these characters would sit down and talk to each other.

TROPES: alien romance, plus size rep, scarred character (heroine), novella, worshipping hero

Chelsea + Hrrrusek

Oh man, another all time fave from Risda! I love the heroines that are slap on a happy face despite all the shit they have endured. Chelsea is a super, sunshine heroine who just takes each day as it comes. If danger or bad things happen, then it was meant to happen. She finds the hero Hrrusek in her river looking for his work badge, and the two have an instant connection. Problem is, he is only working on Risda for a work contract, so this time is limited.

Love the grumpy/sunshine here! Even though our grumpy hero isn't thaaat grumpy. But compared to the heroine and his brother, he is the grumpy one. I also always love the Praxxion love stories, something to shake things up a bit.

Fearless Indeed...

This novella was what this reader needed to refresh herself. Ruby's writing is just so comforting and fun. The way develops the romance really makes the reader experience the relationship.
The reader discovers fearless Chelsea as she is spying on the large cat-like alien in her backyard. Chelsea has no fear and is a bit intrigued by him. This surprises me because those cat-like aliens aren't the nicest of beings. There had to be something about him that made trust herself enough to go up to him.
I loved how fearless Chelsea was, not allowing her past to present. She saw each day as a gift while Hrrrusek really didn't see the joy until he met her. Hrrrusek only had his brother and his work life. I am unsure if he ever thought of being in a steady relationship, that is until he experienced dating Chelsea. She awakened something inside of him and he wanted more if it.
I loved Chelsea and Hrrrusek together. Can't wait for his brother's story.

This was like a cute slice of life novella. The heroine, who was formerly a slave, is fearless to the point of being TSTL especially with how brutal things have been for humans even on Risda III where they should be safe, but she’s got no fucks to give anymore. That attitude was fun to have for a heroine on this planet who’s just happy and sees the best in everything now that the worst has happened to her because most humans here are scared and unhappy. We got another cat-man as the hero and this one was a little chubby which was cute. Overall a super short, easy, cute read.

What does the cat-man look like? Can anyone picture him? To me I just pictured a giant Puss in Boots. Is this a furry book? Someone help, I’m lost.
