Sometimes the past can haunt you...

Eighteen years ago, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine s best friend, Cassie Byers, disappeared, the third in a series of unsolved abductions. Only a macabre nursery rhyme was left at the scene, a nursery rhyme that claimed Evelyn was also an intended victim. Now, after all these years of silence, another girl has gone missing in South Carolina, and the Nursery Rhyme Killer is taking credit. But is Cassie s abductor really back, or is there a copycat at work?

Sometimes the past is best forgotten...

Evelyn has waited eighteen years for a chance to investigate, but when she returns to Rose Bay, she finds a dark side to the seemingly idyllic town. As the place erupts in violence and the kidnapper strikes again, Evelyn knows this is her last chance. If she doesn t figure out what happened to Cassie eighteen years ago, it may be Evelyn s turn to vanish without a trace.

As a rule, I typically find that sequels are not as good as the original novel. Therefore, I am delighted to find an exception, like this one, where I enjoyed this second novel even more.

Like the first book, the writing is still quite average, with decent characters. My least favourite aspect of this series is the romance, but it was more tolerable in this sequel. While the book has its flaws, I honestly enjoyed the reading experience. This story had an intriguing mystery with just enough action to keep me turning the pages. I absolutely loved the aspects of criminal profiling, which is a personal fascination of mine. Heiter did a great job keeping me guessing throughout the novel, with some great twists and turns.

Spoiler Alert! I read this book all the way through so you wouldn’t have to! (You’re welcome!) So there may well be spoilers within this review!

Vanished by Elizabeth Heiter is without a doubt one of the worst mysteries I have read in a long time. The heroine, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine, is simply too stupid to live.

Okay, the first sign of trouble is when she insists she has to be involved in a case in which she is personally involved—a serial killer who kidnapped her best friend when she was growing up has resurfaced in the small South Carolina town where she used to live, and Evelyn absolutely insists that she has to be the profiler assigned to the case.

I could live with that, after all, it is a standard feature of mysteries, although I don’t like it. But this woman is absolutely too dumb to be working for the FBI. First of all, there is a riot at police headquarters when the victim’s father is arrested for beating up one of the suspects in the kidnapping of his daughter. The police chief orders her to stay inside the station while his men rush outside in full riot gear to try to contain the situation. So what does idiot Evelyn do? She grabs a bullhorn, runs outside, and tells the crowd that their actions aren’t helping and they need to let the police handle things. So the crowd turns on her, she gets knocked to the ground and pepper sprayed. The police have to stop what they are doing to try to protect her. What an idiot!

Then Evelyn joins the search for the missing girl, but doesn’t join any of the actual search groups. Instead she goes off by herself where she is accosted by one of the suspects. Once again, she has to be rescued, this time by a fellow FBI agent who has been deployed to the same area on a different case. However, he is interested in Evelyn so he spends more time sniffing around her than he does dealing with his own case.

Next she goes with another police officer to interview a suspect, and while she is in the bathroom of the suspect’s house, she conducts an illegal search of the toilet tank and discovers a trove of pictures of children. Of course, the police cannot act on it since it was an illegal search. Then she goes by herself to another suspect’s house, trespasses on his property and conducts another illegal search. The suspect sees her and calls the FBI to file a complaint against her. Rightfully she should be taken off the case, but she just CAN’T BE! So the FBI sends another agent to serve as the profiler and demotes her to assistant. Now she has two FBI agents dogging her every step of the way.

While all of this is going on, Evelyn continuously has flashbacks to her childhood, remembering when her friend was kidnapped. She has attacks of the vapors at this memory—crying jags, dizziness, etc. So all the guys around her go into all protective mode because they are so concerned about how poor Evelyn is holding up. Why the heck they don’t pack this ding-a-ling off to an FBI post in some place like Nebraska where she can’t possibly do any harm is beyond me.

Then she gets shot at and once again, the guys are all circling her like sharks in full protection mode. There follows a bunch more stupidity until the end of the book when she goes off, again on her own- even though her partner and her boyfriend are expressly falling all over themselves to make sure she is always with someone. This time she conveniently forgets her cell phone so she can’t call for help when she needs it. Not that it would have mattered because the killer- who is completely unlike Evelyn’s profile, by the way, easily gets the drop on her. Unfortunately her boyfriend comes riding to the rescue and saves her in the nick of time. This book is part of a series so readers will have plenty of opportunities to read about the most incompetent FBI agent and profiler in history.

Ironically, the author’s bio at the back of this book says she likes strong heroines. I got news for her—Evelyn Baine is one of the wimpiest heroines I’ve come across in a long time.

If you want to read a good series about a competent FBI agent, check out Allison Brennan’s Lucy Kincaid series. It even has a touch of romance in it, if that’s how you like your mysteries. The Evelyn Baine series, however, sets the cause of women’s rights about 300 years.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Amazon in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in a series featuring FBI Profiler Evelyn Baine.

Evelyn's best friend was abducted 18 years ago. The only clue the kidnapper left was a note .. a poem .. that seemed to indicate Evelyn was also being taken.

Evelyn has waited all these years to find out what happened to her friend, in fact, it's why she joined the FBI. She is about to get her wish.

After all these years, another young girl has vanished ... leaving a note behind in the form of a nursery rhyme, the same as 18 years ago. Evelyn jumps at the chance to investigate. And when she does, another child is taken.

Using all her exceptional skills, she's crossing out names on her list of suspects. But as her list lessens, the closer to danger she gets.

Books 1 and 2 do not have to be read in order, they each do fine as stand-alones. Good mystery element, lots of suspense. Some romance .. which personally I think there should be a little more of. Some violence, but nothing graphic. Very suspenseful when looking at the suspects.

The third in the series, SEIZED, is out or will be shortly ... and I'm looking forward to reading that one, as well.

Elizabeth Heiter delivers another chilling, gripping suspense novel in Book 2 of THE PROFILER series, VANISHED. Reuniting with FBI profiler, Evelyn Baines, feels like reconnecting with your awesome, scarily smart, and terrifyingly accomplished friend. Yet there’s a fragility to Evelyn that makes her a complex and compelling character, an incident that stems from her own childhood brush with a serial killer. When she was twelve, she and her friend were targeted and miraculously, Evelyn survived. Her need to uncover her vanished friend’s abductor drove her to join the FBI.

When the Nursery Rhyme Killer emerges with more terrifying kidnappings after a twelve year absence, Evelyn jumps in, determined to finally uncover her friend’s fate and save these newly lost girls. The book abounds with clever plot twists, suspicious characters, and grisly discoveries to keep even the most experienced suspense reader guessing until the very end…. A feat only Tana French, of the Dublin Murder Squad series, and Gillian Flynn have done to me before.

Fans of either of these authors, or Kate Atkinson and Jane Casey, will find a new author to adore in Heiter. She combines the heart-thumping race to the finish pace and intricate story-telling that suspense fans crave. Although you don’t need to read Book 1, HUNTED, to jump into the wonderful PROFILER series, I highly recommend starting with it if you haven’t already discovered this brilliant novelist. Five Stars!

A very good suspense with romantic elements in which the heroine, FBI Profiler Evelyn Bain travels to South Carolina to finally solve the mystery of her childhood friend's disappearance. Lots of procedural work, a budding romance with another agent, and interesting exploration of the effects of childhood trauma. After two books, Heiter is on my auto-buy list. But I would LOVE to have a bit more romance thrown in, though what there is is sweet.

There's a major disconnect in this book, and it has to do with the heroine. While Evelyn displayed some...less than brilliant traits in the first novel in the series, in this one all of her supposed brilliance (and we're told repeatedly that she's brilliant and that her job means everything to her) seems to take a vacation and I'm frankly shocked that she made it through the book alive. If there's a bad decision to be made here, she makes it, and apparently it's supposed to be a sign of her "dedication" to the case (which she's emotionally involved in and shouldn't be on in the first place) and "evolution" as a character into someone less work-obsessed.

There are some decent attempts at misdirection, and I'm not a great source for asking whether a mystery is too simple to solve or not because I've been reading mysteries since my very first chapter book (The Strange Disappearance of Arthur Cluck when I was five), so that's why this gets a 2 rather than a 1.

But honestly, if ever a story needed a heroine with a brain, it was this one, and instead we get one who really feels like she's backslid into Too Stupid To Live territory.

My star rating for Vanished is: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars! :)

My ‘Blogging Reader’s Review’ after reading an ARC Copy of ‘VANISHED’(via: BooksMoviesFandoms.wordpress.com):

Upon receiving a copy of “Vanished” by Elizabeth Heiter to read and review, I didn’t know what to expect especially since this is the second novel of The Profiler Series. I’ll admit I haven’t read the first book of this series but after reading this one, I am very interested in catching up with what I may have missed. There are about five P.O.V.’s(point of views) at different points within the story which are from FBI profiler Agent Evelyn Baine, long time Rose Bay P.D. police officer Jack Bullock, HRT Agent Kyle McKenzie, Kyle’s HRT partner Agent Gabe Fontaine, Police Chief Tomas Lamar, young girl Mandy Toland and mysterious young girl.

In the close-knit town of Rose Bay, everyone knows everyone and things seem pretty safe as far as most residents believe. A young girl by the name of Evelyn Baine comes to live in Rose Bay with her grandparents because life with her mother was anything but ideal. Being that this town was predominantly white, her light brown skin tone caused some residents to treat her a little bit different. That didn’t faze her once she met her neighbor, a friendly blonde girl who from the start said they would be best friends. They instantly clicked and everything seemed perfect for the young girls. But one night, things would change in such a terrible way. One would be taken and life would be altered in such a way that the other of the two girls would grow up determined to find out what happened to her best friend.

FBI profiler Evelyn Baine got a call from her long lost best friend’s mother after eighteen years. She let her know that a young girl has been taken just like Cassie years before. Now equipped with knowledge as an FBI Profiler, Evelyn returns to Rose Bay to try and find the lost child while also seeking information about the unsolved cases from the past, one case being of her still missing best friend.

I don’t want to give away too much because it is easy to spill something that may take away from the mystery of this captivating suspense story. There is also a dash of romance within the story that was a nice touch. Will Evelyn Baine ever find out what happened to her kidnapped best friend Cassie? Are the cases from eighteen years ago related to the new case? Will Evelyn be able to trust anyone or will this case cost her more than she bargained for which could include her own life? This novel is so well written and each character is thoroughly believable. I highly recommend this novel for readers who enjoy reading enthralling, suspenseful mystery novels that will keep you guessing till the very end. Evelyn and Cassie are both such strong female characters in their own ways and it made the storyline feel so deep and emotionally driven. I could not put this down. Just keep in mind, it has to do with child kidnappings in case that is a touchy subject for you. As a reader and reviewer, I look forward to reading more riveting work by Author Elizabeth Heiter.

My star rating for VANISHED is: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars! :)

Hmm... I'm hitting quite a few novels lately that are just ho-hum, and Vanished was no exception. The story follows Evelyn Baine as she travels back to her hometown, where a girl has gone missing. Kicker is, Evelyn herself was meant to be a kidnap victim of the Nursery Rhyme Killer eighteen years ago, so she puts her stubborn foot down and all but forces her way onto the case as the FBI's profiler. But it's not just the killer who awaits her return, but the police officer who grilled her to the bone last time she was there, determined to do anything to finally close this case.

I've always loved books and movies where you have a serial kidnapper or killer wrecking havoc on a small town, but this one just didn't do it for me. Evelyn and her comrades continually went between three possible suspects with very little to show for it, and it slowed the pace of the story so much it was triumph just to make it to the next chapter. Maybe it was Evelyn's complete disregard for the rules and allowing her emotions to say screw you to the necessary steps needed to gather legitimate evidence that wouldn't be thrown out in court because of unlawful obtainment, but her attitude really rubbed me the wrong way.

 photo beg2hate_zps06399c32.gif

I get that she was meant to be a victim herself and that her childhood best friend was probably dead, but she seemed to be on a one-girl mission of stupidity going off doing illegal searches and putting herself in dangerous situations without backup or communication. I mean seriously? You're trying to get an abductor/killer put away. Don't mess it up. There are two little girls missing out there, so try not to make it all about you and your almost-but-never-happened kidnapping twenty years ago.

Sadly, by just a third of the way in, I thought the person who was responsible for the abductions was as obvious as a goldfish in a piranha tank, but for some reason, Evelyn and company were completely blind to what was right in front of them, so law enforcement comes off looking pretty stupid in this novel. It was either the killer's doing or just dumb luck that they managed to unearth anything at all.

So, meh. Don't get me wrong, This was by no means a bad book, but it lacked the necessary mystery and suspense and actual police work to get me to read the other books in this series.

I received an eBook copy in exchanged for an honest review.

Hey. Guess what? I just did it again. I just read a part-of-a-series book without really stating the series. Yerp, I haven't read the first book.

Let's forget about that. I love this! Seriously. Who is Elizabeth Heiter and why is it that nobody have told me about her? Where was I when this was released.

Okay, I admit, I was shocked when I knew that this was part of a series because omygosh, this is illegal, I haven't read the first book yet. And then I was like, what if I can't understand the story?! What am I to do?

Useless fun fact: I started the <>The Selection Series with The Elite. Yes. I know. I opened the red one first then the blue then I realized I just read the second book first and well, at least I've read The Prince before The Elite sooo, I pretty much I understood it.

Soooo, about Vanished, I loved it! I didn't know what to expect because well, I didn't read the summary and so I just dove into it.

At first I was like: Oh look, another book involving the FBI. This should be fun. And it was! I swear. I have always loved mystery and this pretty much fulfilled it. I loved the thrill and it was good. I'm not going into details so I'll just you that the mystery part is fun and thrilling.

And there's the mix of romance and it was not exactly romantic but it was romantic. Okay, it was. Not in a very blunt romantic way but it was. It got me fangirling for five minutes after.

One thing, it was not a very quotable quotes everywhere kind of book but there were enough life lessons if you did not took everything word for word.

The writing was fair and the characters were real. I didn't have problems with regards to connecting to them.

The plot itself was great. Though, I demand an epilogue for the epilogue.

I have high respects for authors who can write good mysteries and Elizabeth was just added to my list so I suggest this to everyone: Read the series now. Don't forget to start with the first book. Unlike me...

I understand why this book was the second one in this series, but I almost wish it had been the first. It's better written than the first book, and those who tried the first book and gave up on the writer did themselves a real disservice by not reading the second one.

FBI profiler Evelyn Baine is at work one day when the call she dreads comes in. It's the mom of a girl Evelyn's age--a girl who was abducted when the two were 12 and best friends. Indeed, Evelyn was to have been one of the girls taken by the kidnapper, too, but for some inexplicable reason, Evelyn was left behind. But that singular event literally shaped the rest of Evelyn's life; it is the reason she became an FBI profiler at all, and the reason she rapidly rose to be one of the best in her division. Now the Nursery Rhyme Killer appears to be back in the small South Carolina town where Evelyn grew up and from where her friend, Cassie, was abducted. Another little girl has gone missing, and once again, local authorities are calling on the FBI for help. But should they really send Evelyn? Is she not so emotionally invested in the case that she could actually damage the chances she and her colleagues have to catch a killer? And, because of her mixed-race background, will she have difficulty being accepted and taken seriously in her old community?

These are all questions Heiter masterfully explores in this race against time to catch a child-abducting killer. Before the book ends, three children will be involved, and one will die. Evelyn's life will be in grave danger as well.

I truly didn't see the end of this coming; I didn't predict the ultimate outcome, and the creep factor is wonderfully well done here as Heiter gets you inside the head of a killer and gives you an unblinking tour of the twisted sickness that lies therein.

There's a small romance element here, but it doesn't detract from the story. Granted there are some predictable elements here--vulnerable little Evelyn facing a formidable killer opponent--that kind of thing--but this is well worth your time, and it's a quick read.

Evelyn Baine’s best friend Cassie was taken by the Nursery Rhyme Killer when they were children. It’s one of the reasons that Evelyn became an FBI agent. Now someone is kidnapping kids again in her home town.

Evelyn goes back home to help with the investigation hoping to find out what happened to her friend all those years ago. Jack is not happy to see her as he remembers her from long ago and thinks she will be to emotional to handle things.

Evelyn starts to think he might be right when she lets her emotions get in the way and even trepasses on a supsects land. It lands her in some serious trouble with her boss back home and could ruin her career as a profiler.

Her boss sends her friend Greg to help out with the investigation and make sure that things goes smoothly. Kyle is her sort of boyfriend and he has business with HRT that is near by so he can check up on her and make sure she is holding up okay. Evelyn is not sure where their relationship is going but she was glad to have him around.

Evelyn is a tough profiler but she has had to deal with a lot of emotional things in her life. In the previous book Hunted she had a killer after her and now she is dealing with the person who could be her friends killer. I like Evelyn because she is tough but she is emotional as well. Kyle really liked Evelyn but he is sort of playing things by ear as he is not sure how Evelyn feels about them being together. That and the fact there is not suppose to be in fraternizing between agencies. I am rooting for Kyle and Evelyn and I hope their relationship develops more with each novel.

There are a few different suspects to keep you guessing and as Evelyn gets closer to the truth her emotions run high. If you are a fan authors like Jane Casey then I think you will enjoy this novel and all it’s twist and turns. It definitely kept me guessing till the very end.

I can’t wait to see what happens to Evelyn and the others!

Although I have not read the first book in this series, I did read Disarming Detective which is somewhat connected to this series. I loved it and enjoyed reading another book about profilers. The story was creepy and wonderfully convoluted. Evelyn get a chance to finally track down the killer who kidnapped her best friend as a child and left her behind. She throws herself into the investigation, but her tendency to go off half cocked, so to speak, gets her in trouble. Kyle, an agent in a different FBI division, has been interested in Evelyn for a while but only recently made that interest known. Kyle is temporarily on another assignment in the same town as Evelyn. He ends up stepping in on occasion for physical and emotional support. I tend to need a touch of romance in my suspense, and the relationship between Kyle and Evelyn did the trick. It was certainly no hot and steamy type of thing, but more deeply emotional. The main focus of the book was the mystery and the suspense surrounding it. I had my villains pegged pretty early in the story and ended up half right and half wrong. It was nice to be wrong. I love when things are a bit unpredictable. This was definitely a well plotted and interesting mystery. I can't wait to read the next book and see what direction Evelyn takes.

A thriller that will have you leaving the lights on and the curtains drawn.

Everyone’s nightmare of the bogeyman. This man is not hiding in the closet, but out in plain sight. He could be a friend, a family member, a newspaper boy, and he is watching your children. He stalks and chooses for a specific purpose. He must have the perfect child, not just anyone will fit the requirements he has sets for himself. He does make mistakes on occasion, and must choose another…but who?

A thrill ride of emotions. I just could NOT put this down. Elizabeth Heiter brings the story to a realistic level like no other. She makes the characters so real they could be your real friends and families. Detailed backgrounds, a small town where everyone knows you, and the outsiders that come to town to help find a killer, a phenomenal story.

I will be honest, I haven't read the first of this series but was given the chance to read and review this one. Without giving anything away, the mystery of this suspense story was quite captivating. The writing is great and the characters really pull you into the flow of their intertwined lives. I completely recommend this novel for readers who enjoy dark, suspenseful, mystery novels that will keep you guessing till the very end like this one does. Evelyn and Cassie are both such strong female characters and the storyline is emotionally driven and thought provoking. The story has to do with child kidnappings in case that is a touchy subject for you. As a reader and reviewer, I look forward to reading more riveting work by Author Elizabeth Heiter.

A good mystery with lots of plausible suspects to keep up the mystery and suspense. The downside of this book was the lead, Evelyn. She is billed as this strong heroine, and throughout the book she was portrayed as this week, stupid woman. As an FBI agent she continually made stupid decisions, put herself in harms way and had to be rescued by yet another male coworker, and as a profiler she had no clue. That was really frustrating, but having read the first book in this series and really liking it, as well as liking parts of this one, I will give this series another try.

This book had so much repetition that it could probably be cut down by a 1/4. I definitely knew Evelyn wouldn't be able to 'move on' until she knew what happened to Cassie The repetition did not enhance the story, it made it drag.
There is a glaring error at the conclusion. Evelyn had lose her gun and it had been picked up by the Uncle. Yet when she goes down in the cellar at the first thing she does is draw her gun. Pretty magical gun - more like a Potterseque artifact.

Ms. Heiter does it again! The Profiler series is the best new series out there. Hunted was book 1 and had great suspense. Book 2, Vanished, was amazing. Most times when the first book in a series is great I find the second one just doesn't measure up. That's not the case with Vanished. It grabbed me from page one and kept me guessing to the end. You think you know "who done it" only to be shocked and surprised over and over. I found my new favorite author in Ms. Heiter. Keep it up!

Evelyn Baine is a compelling protagonist, between her backstory of joining the FBI and the details of her romantic life. ... Vanished] by Elizabeth Heiter
The Profiler series Book #2
3 Stars

From The Book:
Sometimes, the past can haunt you… Eighteen years ago, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine's best friend, Cassie Byers, disappeared, the third in a series of unsolved abductions. Only a macabre nursery rhyme was left at the scene, a nursery rhyme that claimed Evelyn was also an intended victim. Now, after all these years of silence, another girl has gone missing in South Carolina, and the Nursery Rhyme Killer is taking credit. But is Cassie's abductor really back, or is there a copycat at work?

Sometimes, the past is best forgotten… Evelyn has waited eighteen years for a chance to investigate, but when she returns to Rose Bay, she finds a dark side to the seemingly idyllic town. As the place erupts in violence and the kidnapper strikes again, Evelyn knows this is her last chance. If she doesn't figure out what happened to Cassie eighteen years ago, it may be Evelyn's turn to vanish without a trace.

My Views:
I really enjoyed the first book of this series but I found I was becoming bored with the repeated theme of this one. Evelyn was told from the start that she was too close to this case to be working it but she wouldn't listen so most of the 395 pages was her proving everyone right. Throughout this book I found her to be naive & even weak. She had to be rescued more than once or twice and made some very poor choices along the way. She wasn't like this in the first book. Hopefully in future books she'll stick to what she does best...profiling.

There are days, rare ones, when I think that perhaps I read too much. Or at least, I read too much of the same genre.

This novel focuses on an FBI profiler, Evelyn Bain whose best friend (for 2 years) disappeared 18 years ago. A nursery rhyme left behind made it clear that Evelyn was to have been kidnapped as well but it didn’t work out that way. She has spent her life thinking about her best friend Cassie and what happened to her, and carrying a sense of guilt about being the oneone to have escaped.

Now, as one could guess, a similar kidnapping has occurred complete with nursery rhyme and Evelyn knows that her perfect little town, Rose Bay, has a dark side.

Violence erupts because of the fear the townsfolk have for the safety of their children. Is it The original kidnapper or is it a copycat? The police are at their wits end, growing agitated as each moment they fail to solve the case passes by.

The story progresses, but I found that the plot meandered and I didn’t really feel the eminent threat and ominous fear I should have. In fact, the story was emotionally flat and I was not drawn to any of the characters. Emotional reactions are an important aspect of a quality novel for me. Without them, I remain indifferent

Very disappointed in this book. 1st it was # 2 in a series - and nowhere on the cover or on the back synopsis does it say that. 2nd the main character in the book was not well written - and borderline incompetent. 3rd the peripheral characters in the book lacked depth. 4th - a female serial killer who begins killing 18 years after her father who was also a serial killer stops?

Save your time, energy & money - don't read this book.
