Nominee for Best Romance (2015)
Meet the intense and sexy bad boy bikers of the Chaos Motorcycle Club in Carissa and Joker's story from Kristen Ashley's New York Times bestselling series. The ride of her life . . . Once upon a time, Carissa Teodoro believed in happy endings. Money, marriage, everything came easy---until she woke up to the ugly truth about her Prince Charming. Now a struggling, single mom and stranded by a flat tire, Carissa's pondering her mistakes when a vaguely familiar knight rides to her rescue on a ton of horsepower. Climb on and hold tight . . . In high school, Carson Steele was a bad boy loner who put Carissa on a pedestal where she stayed far beyond his reach. Today, he's the hard-bodied biker known only as Joker, and from the way Carissa's acting, it's clear she's falling fast. While catching her is irresistible, knowing what to do with her is a different story. A good girl like Carissa is the least likely fit with the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Too bad holding back is so damned hard. Now, as Joker's secrets are revealed and an outside threat endangers the club, Joker must decide whether to ride steady with Carissa---or ride away forever . . .

Kristen Ashley

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

::: FULL REVIEW NOW POSTED ::: 5 stars!! :::

It’s you. It’s always been you. It’ll always be you. Fuckin’ always.

HOLY WOW!!!! This is easily one of the best books Kristen Ashley has written! I loved every single word in every single scene. From the gorgeously heartfelt romance that made me swoon over and over again, to the thrilling cameos that will have any true KA fan jumping for joy, and the intensely badass showdowns, this was pure Alpha male romance perfection!! 5 STARS!

This is Joker’s book. He was in love from afar with a girl named Carissa in high school, but unfortunately their lives took them in different directions for many years. Carissa married a pretentious and powerful guy who cheated on her and left her alone and pregnant with their son, while Joker escaped his abusive home and joined the brotherhood of the Chaos Motorcycle Club to create a new life for himself.

They met again by chance one day. Carissa was stranded alone on the side of the road with a flat tire and her baby in the back seat when Joker rode up to them and offered to help, effectively entwining their lives once again…

I honestly have to say, KA truly writes all kinds of relationships — be they romantic, of brotherhoods, or just regular friendships — in such a way that you feel the depth of their connection in your heart and soul. The Chaos characters have each others’ backs in a way where you believe they’ll stand by each other come what may. You mess with one of these badass Alphas, you’ve messed with all of them.

And let me tell you, Joker was about as badass and Alpha as you could imagine. This guy was a survivor, a bad boy, a biker, and a fighter, who not only knew how to protect those he cared about, but proved that through his actions he would do so no matter what. He’ll have you swooning in no time — just be a little forgiving of him at the start. He’s swoon-worthy, but like so many of the best heroes, he’s also just a little rough around the edges as well. But in an interesting KA twist, we actually had a scenario here where the girl went after the guy (initially, at least). Don’t get me wrong, he was as badass as they come, but he had a very intense, all consuming case of I’m-not-good-enough-for-her. It wasn’t that he didn’t think of himself as a good guy, it was more that he didn’t think his mannerisms and lifestyle were right for her.

Tack put his forearms on the bar… “Joke, your story to tell when you wanna tell it. Your story to keep if you don’t ever wanna tell. Thought you had secrets. Way you’re holdin’ back with this girl, think I’m wrong. You don’t have secrets. You got demons.” …

“It’s me protecting her, Tack.”
“Against what?”
“Demons.”

They were opposites. He was the rough bad boy, she was the delicate prom queen. But don’t you worry. This girl was strong and badass in her own right and she had no problem showing them just how good they could be together. Gah. It was just so heart-warming seeing them slowly become them.

Once they official got together, their romance was just beyond heart-melting. It was hot and sexy, the banter had me laughing, the way they supported each other in their respective lives made me want to cheer out loud. They were such polar opposites, but I totally loved them as a couple!

“What the fuck are you doin’?” he asked…
“That’s twenty cents,” I returned.
“Hunh?” he grunted.
“Regular curse words are a nickel,” I told him. “Bad curse words are a dime. Everyone knows the f-word is a bad one and since, starting now, you’re paying me every time you curse, that’s twenty cents you owe me… I’ll give it to charity or something. The way you cuss, we’ll probably be able to build a homeless shelter in a week.”

There’s a lot of drama (naturally) with Carissa’s douchebag ex-husband who seemed to make it his life’s mission to make her miserable. But I absolutely loved seeing the way she didn’t let anything get her down and the way she was willing to go to the ends of the earth to make a good, safe life for her son.

“You created this situation, Aaron… You’re no longer dealing with a girl who lost half her world by the time she was eighteen… You’re dealing with a mother. That’s an entirely different breed. So I’d advise you to change your tactics and your goals. Because your current fight is a fight there is no way in hell you can win.”

Gah. There was just so much heart and soul behind each one of the conversations in this book. Didn’t matter who it was between. It just hit so deep each time. Quite literally delivering all the feels!!!!

“I’m in love with your ex-wife,” he returned, no amusement in his voice… “I’ve loved her since high school, man. She means everything to me. You gotta drag her down, that’ll suck, but I’ll pick her back up. You gotta rip her apart, I’ll fuckin’ hate watchin’ it, but I’ll put her back together… But know this, in the end, it’s gonna be me and her.”

Among the many heart-melting things in this book was little baby Travis’ gleeful obsession with Joker (and Joker’s beard). Let me tell you: big Alpha biker + baby (that isn’t even his but that he loves openly and completely and accepts as his own without question) = PURE SWOON!!!!

Joker sauntered right past me.
And he did this to go straight to Big Petey.
And he did this so he could firmly pull Travis from Pete’s arms, lift him so they were face to fact, and ask, “How goes it, kid?”
Taking that in, I suddenly had trouble breathing.
Travis screamed with glee and latched on with both hands to Joker’s beard.

And HOLY KA REUNION TIME!!! If you’re a long-time KA fan, you’ll be thrilled to know that this book is chock-full of the most badass cameos you can imagine. Here’s an idea… there is a scene with Joker, Tack, Hawk Delgado, Mitch Lawson, Brock Lucas, Lee Nightingale, Luke Stark, Hank Nightingale, Hector Chaves, Shy, Hop, and a special appearance from Knight all together! Holyyyyyy badass!!!!! This was badass upon badass. I mean each one of these guys is an epic badass in their own right, but all of them coming together like that was just………. *fans self* almost more epic than I could handle! Plus, other amazing characters we’ve come to love like Elvira, Tyra, Indy, and more are present in the book as well.

At one look, I saw Elvira wasn’t feeling upset about a mother done wrong.
She was just flat furious.
“Your man’s got T-minus a month to sort that jackass, then I’m settin’ Hawk on him,” she warned.

Ohhh and guys, make a note of this. There’s a very specific line right near the very end of Chapter 20 that literally represents everything a KA Alpha really is. Seriously. I read it and just got chills and immediately tears sprang to my eyes. It’s a line from Knight and I’m not quoting it here because just trust me, it’ll have more impact if you read it in the context he says it in but yeah… make note. I read it over and over again — just this one little line — and each time I read it, I got shivers. That one simply line to me is the very reason why Kristen Ashley is the unparalleled queen of Alpha male romance.

This book was such a smooth read. Each scene just flowed right into the next. There were no good stopping points. It was just the kind of book where I started reading but then suddenly looked up four hours later barely noticing how much time had gone by. And luckily, KA is not known for her short novels so there is enough goodness to last you a long time! Honestly though, I read this book as slowly as I could because I didn’t want it to end and I tried to make the awesomeness last as long as humanly possible.

As I’m sure you can tell by the 37 other reviews (holy shit!!!) I’ve written of Kristen Ashley’s books, I’m a huge fan of her writing. Something about the way she writes, the characters she creates, and the stories she tells is just magical to me. If you’re new to her writing just click here for a full and very detailed list of all her books (separated into series) and my personal suggestions as to the order they should be read in.

From start to finish, this book kept my heart racing. I couldn’t stop smiling and swooning and just feeling everything that happened with all my heart and soul. It was a super-charged badass, romantic thrill ride and I loved every single word. KA rocks my world!!!

Rating: 5 stars!! Contemporary Adult romance.

Ya'll remember the candy "Fruit Gushers?"

Visual Aid:

I think of them as being a super lame 90's candy, but apparently they are still available...*side eye* at you Nabisco..."side eye* at you...

Anyway, I'm not sure if these are (or were ever) sold outside of the US (be thankful non-US sufferers people), but they were - and I quote:

"Hexagon-shaped fruit snacks, the center of each a thick sweet liquid, and surrounded by a chewy gelatinous sugar covering. When one bites into the snack, the liquid inside "gushes" out, hence the name of the snack..."

Yes, yes, sound absolutely scrumptious don't they?

***Tangent to this tangent Alert***

They even came with awesome commercial visuals like these:

LOLZ.

Nucking futs right?

But I digress.

The whole, long-winded point of my even mentioning this is simply for it to be the stepping stone to this disclaimer:

WARNING:

I'm about to make like a squishy ejaculating fruit snack and GUSH some candy colored sweetness of happy ridiculousness all the ish over this review space.

In all honesty, this book should probably only get 4-4.5 stars from me. ***Updated to reflect this 7/6/15 now that the gush excitement has cleared***

But I don't even care.

I am seriously so relieved and excited right now that I don't even know what to do with myself.

So for black-souled, cold-hearted little me, all this excitement is making me blow sunshine, stars, and unicorns right out of my ass.

description

And here are some reasons why:

1) Peace Out "Honey!"

Anyone who has read any of my other KA review, knows one thing about me.

I fucking loathe the endearment "Honey."

Because it reminds me of my Grandma...

description

Personal preference?

Yes.

Still drive me nuts?

Yes.

Care that it's unfair of me?

No.

But for once - praise the Honey Nut Cheerios Bee - the h called the H something - ANYTHING - other than "Honey!!!"

[angels singing in background]

She went with "Sweetie," mind you...Honey's cuter, peppier, slightly less geriatric little sister, but still...

NOT Honey!

description

So I'll take it.

And I'll line dance that little cow wrangler all the way to the County Fair hoedown.

And since I'm feeling so sporty-gush, I'll even let "Butterfly" and her "Googly Foogly" come along too.

2) Forget About 2

This book felt more like the KA I started reading - and then stalking - several years ago.

description

A lot of people say in their reviews that certain books seem more "Classic KA" to them.

Well, while I get the gist of what they are trying to to say, I don't always know what that necessarily means to them.

But to me it means this:

The feeling that I got when reading some of my favorites like Breathe, Own the Wind, Fire Inside, and At Peace?

I got with this book.

description

Kristen Ashley has a way of including little nuances that not a lot of authors include - the small ways someone moves, the exact expression on their face, the exact way people are standing in a candid photograph - small, seemingly trivial details that might seem small, but add so much depth to the characters.

Can she be somewhat formulaic?

description

Yes.

Are the majority of her H and h's VERY similar?

description

Yes.

Does she "Baby, "Eyes," "chin lift," "cute," clipped sentence us to death whilst simultaneously strangling us with the threading color of the curtains?

description

You bet your ass she does.

And. I. Loved. It.

Again.

Did it drag a bit toward the end?

A tiny bit.

Was the whole Valenzuela plot line kinda weak?

Yes.

But. I. Don't. Give. A. Fuck.

[Because we have seen what KA does with the final culminations of major story line build-ups...

...I'm looking at you The Promise and Wild and Free.

And I will take a plot line side out over butt plugs and magical fighting bunnies any day.]

(That was a Deacon and yet another Wild and Free dig just in case you missed it.)

Because BITTER.

But whatevs!

This was such an enjoyable read for me.

Joker was a really great character who worked to overcome a lot of crappy life circumstances and I liked Carissa a lot too.

There were some WICKED awesome cameos by some of our favorite KA Denver friends and, as always, a fun and quirky supporting cast of new characters.

I really liked some of the character growth that happened in the lives of the supposed "villains" too. And being that KA loves to redeem, who knows who we see in future books...

Anyway, I'm not even sure how to go about wrapping up this train wreck of verbal diarrhea and I'm feeling kind of hazy from the tequila Benadryl I just mainlined because possible seasonal allergies, so I'm out!

Nap time!

Ride Steady has become my new FAVORITE KA book...well, it shares favorite book shelf with Creed and Sweet Dreams.

I loved this book! I loved Joker! I loved Joker and Carissa! I loved their romance! I loved Joker's relationship with baby Travis! I loved everything about this book! It's KA at her best!

Joker now shares the spot with Mitch (Law Man) as my FAVORITE KA hero. That's how much I LOVED him. He stole my heart from the prologue and I fell head-over-heels in love with him as the story progressed.

I think that says it all!!!

There is a reason Kristen Ashley is one of my favorite authors. And there is a reason I’ve read 40 of her books. It’s because this woman can write. She can tell a story. And she makes you fall in love with her stories and her characters. Every book I read of hers, I never fail to fall in love with it. Ride Steady is easily in my top 10 favorite KA books and it’s one I know I’ll re-read in the future. I loved Joker and Carissa’s story!
“One day, Carson Steele, you’re going to be a magnificent man. I don’t know how that will be… But whatever it is, it will happen. I believe it. And one day, you’ll see past what you’ve been taught and you’ll believe it too.”

Carson Steel is a teenage boy who has a difficult home life. But he has a plan. He’s going to get away from his father and change his life. He has a few people who believe in him. A teacher, a few neighbors etc. Something has him making that change a bit earlier than planned. He leaves town and when he comes back, he’s a different man.

 photo ebaf9381-e057-46a4-adba-f8edbecfe618_zpscqvqvnaq.jpg

Carissa is a young single mother. Her ex-husband and high school sweetheart really did a number on her. Now she’s raising her son on what little money she makes and just barley making ends meet while her ex is living the good life. One flat tire changes everything for her. She has a flat and a biker pulls over to help her. Joker is that biker. He seems familiar to her, but she can’t put her finger on it. Either way, he helps Carissa and offers to have her stop by Ride (his MC’s garage) to get her car worked on. Once the club meets her and takes her in, they can’t help but want to help her.

Lets have a little background on Carissa and Joker… they went to high school together. They were different, and Joker had it bad for her. What he didn’t know is that she always had a crush on him as well. Carson was the bad boy, she was the homecoming queen/cheerleader. Now back to the present, Carissa is starting to fall for Joker. And even though it takes Joker some time to come out of his shell and come around, he does.

 photo 6ee707e4-6705-49b7-9e4b-6b62da1fe7d9_zpsyxbfvswt.jpg

Both of these main characters were nothing short of amazing. Carissa is a heroine you will adore. She’s a mother, a hard worker, a good friend and just an all around great person. She is tough, but soft at the same time. Then there is Joker. Joker was a fantastic hero. He’s a tough biker, yes, but he’s also an artist. A brother you can count on. He’s amazing with Carissa’s son and he has the best heart. I loved his character from the start, but when he laid it out for Carissa’s ex… just wow.

Not only do we have Joker and Carissa, but we have some of our old favorite characters (Tack, Tyra, Shy, Tabby, Rush, High, Elvira etc. plus some AMAZING cameos from some of our favorite KA guys) and also some new ones. I love all of Carson’s extended family. His friends that have made themselves his people. These people aren’t just friends to Carson, they are his family. His Chaos brothers are his family as well. And they become Carissa’s too. And she needs good people in her life just as much as Joker did.

 photo 270ef338-9917-4504-9b0a-484b6c35c914_zpshw1pdpmi.jpg

This story melted my heart. It made me so happy, I had a perma-grin on my face most of the time I read. It had me crying happy tears and I loved it from beginning to the very end. Honestly, I can’t think of anything I didn’t like about this one. There is nothing better than picking up a book by your favorite author and loving every single word. It was a long book, but it didn’t feel long. When it was over, I wanted more. I loved seeing Joker and Carissa overcome all the obstacles of their lives. Ride Steady is a beautiful, heart warming romance. It’s not just a biker book and not just another Kristen Ashley book. This book is something special and something you won’t want to miss out on reading!

** 5 “catching butterflies” STARS **

“I think I might be falling in love with you.”

“Then quit thinkin', Carrie, because I KNOW I'm fallin' for YOU.”

description

Carson “Joker” Steele has had a tough start at life: A mother that left him before he even began to crawl and an abusive father that makes him believe he is worth sh*t… Carson can’t defend himself either, because he needs a roof over his head, clothes on his back and food in his stomach.

He needs to endure the pain, the violence and the neglect, so he tries to escape his real life by standing outside the fence of a garage called “Ride”, belonging to the “Chaos MC”, watching the cool biker guy with a goatee and his son fixing cars, talking, laughing… Or by sketching the things that make him smile, like his neighbor Linus’ bulldog, Mrs. Heely’s house and the American flag proudly dancing with the wind over it and…Carissa Teodoro.

“Good stuff for you out there, Carson. Good stuff… A good life. A beautiful life. You’ll get it. I know it. Because you deserve it.”
~ CARISSA

description

Carissa… The cheerleader. The golden girl. The popular girl that isn’t cruel like the rest of them. The girl that smiles at everybody, despite losing a sister and having a sick mother. The girl of Carson’s dreams… And the girl that was the last person he saw before finally fighting back his father, taking all his stuff and driving off to freedom. The girl that asked him on a date to get Blizzards together that day. The girl that Carson had to turn down, in order not to infect her with his darkness…which was the biggest mistake he’s ever made.

“Yeah, Carrie, it’s you. It’s always been you. It’ll always be you. F*CKIN’ ALWAYS.”
~ JOKER

description

It’s been 8 years since the day Carissa Teodoro had to let Carson Steele go and her life has changed drastically since then. Now, she is divorced, with a 9-month-old baby boy on her lap, three jobs and barely enough money to keep on going.

Oh and right that second she has a flat tire on the side of a crowded road in Denver with her son on her lap and she needs to take him to his cheating a**hole of a father ASAP. Thank God after waiting for ages and watching all the cars passing by without caring about a lady with a baby in trouble…someone stops to help. A man with long, wild, black hair and a full beard, dressed in a black leather jacket, faded jeans and motorcycle boots. A biker with strange, blunt, deep steel gray eyes that just feels... familiar somehow.

Does Carissa know him from somewhere? Where has she seen those gray eyes that show so much pain and emotion one second, to close off and turn ice-cold the other?

And why does she never want to stop looking at them all of a sudden?

“No matter what happens, I will never, not ever, not f*ckin’ ever, Carissa, regret ridin’ down that shoulder to help you and your boy. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made in my life, and I know that in a way I know I’ll feel that until the day I f*ckin’ die.”
~ JOKER

Reasons to fall in love with this book: JOKER, JOKER, JOKER, JOKER, and Carissa, and Trevor (my sweet little boy!), and all my other Chaos and KA boys that showed up again and lastly the fact that there was no unnecessary drama.

Needing some space to regroup, I took a ride back to re-discover books and authors that touched me and wouldn't let go. Kristen Ashley has always been my calming go to. She has this way of writing that once you get her mindset and understand how she weaves a tale, it can be addicting, especially with her "Vintage OG series. These books are always something I come back to.

4.5 A Beautiful Life Stars
* * * * 1/2 Spoiler Free-A 2015 Review
Abuse...There are just so many kinds and all of it is unnecessary. The damage, whether it be physical or emotional, leaves scars that take so much to overcome...if the person is able to do so.

This type of action happens in schools from bullies....from people who have no business having children, and from ex-spouses to name a few...and all of them were front and center in Ride Steady.

There were the opposite forces, though, to combat all that evil. There were those who were a safe haven for those who were bullied, and abused by a vindictive parent. And then there were loving arms of a man who had worked his way through all of it for a woman he had always loved.

This 3rd entry of the Chaos series, Ride Steady, was a strong winner for me. It had all of the necessary KA elements to allow me to sink into the haze which happens when I read her books. This series is different from her some of her others, but she brought in all the many players who would fit from past books. Each added weight to the story; each revisit was pertinent, not just stuck there to appease readers. All of it blended well together and worked for me.

This reads like any other KA story in that the main focus is everyday life. People who have stories; a history that ends up needing to be worked out... hopefully with a happy sexy ending. There will be some conflict, confusion, and then possibly concern. Yet in the end...all is resolved with beauty for the focused couple... it is her way.

What else is her way is the realization of the characters ... how they saw themselves... how we meet them in this journey ...what it takes for them to come together ... and through this joining ... to achieve their better life. I think this... is why I love KA writing... because whether it is through a backdrop of the Biker World, the Police/Private Detective/Bounty Hunter/ Questionable Actions World, or just the everyday world of a bar, bakery, bookstores, hair salon, etc. all of the players understand what is at stake... the heart and its truth in loving their person.

There will be others who will be more detailed in telling this story.

There is so much to look at and yet it is the same; a boy who is judged not by his talents and intelligence but by the actions of destructive parenting- something he had no control over. His only shining beacon of light showing him he was worth something came from a dedicated teacher and a neighbor woman. These two people gave him the experience of knowing the feeling of respect and love...he harbored it... kept it close and recognized it for what it was. He also saw what should have been through a fence of Ride, Chaos' business. He saw a boy loved by his father... a relationship to wish to have and know this is how it should be. This boy grows into this man...and he has many facets; they are shown and we understand.

The woman is a girl who looked to fit in rather than just be...She experienced early in her life the crushing death of her younger sister... then her mother. She grew up and married the man she thought would love and protect her only to be destroyed after she had twisted herself up to fit his mold. He set upon tearing everything away from her; her well-being, security, self-worth, and then their son.

This love story is an easy read... you are captivated by the first words of dedication to KA's teacher, Mr. Robinson. The prologue leads you to the feels from the get-go and you are off and running wanting all of the tales.

There are so many high points and all of them lead to our characters' strength and love. The epicenter of this love that branches out to everything is Travis, our gal's son. It is through all of the interactions, reasons, play, and just being which causes so much in the reader.

We see how a mother's love for her son can be enough to motivate her to pull herself through the fire and come out whole. We see a burly, bearded biker reach out and cushion a baby in his arms by the side of a highway...and we see this child hold a story together through all of it.
A thing of wonder and beauty.

So I enjoyed this read... it had it all plus all of the Chaos players, the Nightingale crew, and even Knight himself...This was a strong addition to the series and we even got a taste of what is to come... Logan's story... an older demographic, I think... which should be intriguing...

~~~ Before Reading ~~~
Shhhhhhh.....
Don't tell anyone but somehow I got an arc of Ride Steady...
I know, right... they must have mistaken me for someone else...
"Go after your beautiful life."
I absolutely LOVED this book and recommend it to everyone because it can be read as a standalone. Commence swooning...
description
Kristen Ashley completely knocked this story out of the park. This book is hands down my favorite in the series to date. I needed a good hour or so to calm down from my happy tears and full-blown book blitz excitement that this book left in its wake. That epilogue was simply priceless and I have reread it several times already.
The story starts seven years in the past, with a teenage Carson Steele living with his abusive father. We learn that there is only one girl in his heart, the girl of his dreams, Carissa Teodoro. His feelings for Carissa were from afar but were so very strong and years later on the side of a highway by chance the two meet again.
Carissa is divorced with an infant son and has been through the wringer by her ex-husband. Joker offers her the help of Chaos club to fix her car and Carissa doesn’t recognize Carson underneath the beard, long hair and bikerness but falls for the man he is today Joker.
[image error]
I absolutely adored the pacing, descriptions and those wonderful new characters: Mrs. Heely, Mr. Robinson and Luis however the true treat was that we are gifted with CAMEOS GALORE!! Having cosmos with Tyra, Elivra, Laine, and Tabby while having the hot bunch-plus assisting in outside business was squeal-worthy!
Carson and Carissa were the perfect examples of why I read books and especially this author!!
Joke, your story to tell when you wanna tell it. Your story to keep if you don't ever wanna tell. Thought you had secrets. Way you're holding' back with this girl, think I'm wrong. You don't have secrets. You got demons.
Motorcycle Man was the book that first introduced me into the world of MC romance and I've been hooked ever since. I LOVED that book and when I found out that KA will be writing a spin off of that book with her Chaos series, I was beyond thrilled. While the first two books in this series were good, I can safely say that this one was definitely the best in the series so far and also my favorite. Carson "Joker" Steele and Carissa "Carrie" Teodoro absolutely stole my heart. Maybe it's because it gave me that soul mates love and second chance vibe? Whatever the reason, it just worked for me
Now look, don't go into this book expecting something different. Most of Kristen Ashley's characters sound absolutely the same with the monosyllabic heroes and the heroines that may be 25 but sound like they're going on 40 with their 'honeys' and the 'sweethearts'. But while it may not offer anything new in that respect, what it does have is that vintage KA vibe. You know what I'm talking about. It will have descriptions galore, it will have the hero that can answer practically any question with "babe", and it will have an incredible love story.
You good?" he asked.
I swallowed. Then I nodded.
"Wanna be better?"
I pressed a hand to his chest and breathed, "Yes."
Joker first met Carrie as Carson Steele when they were both in high school. Carrie was the beautiful, sweet and popular cheerleader while he was the boy from the wrong side of the tracks with an abusive asshole for a father. Unfortunately his plan of waiting it out till he graduates didn't work and Carson decided to put everything behind him when his father's abuse proves to be too much; including the beautiful girl that will always have his heart. He wants her to have the beautiful life she deserves and a man like him definitely can't give her that.
Gotta get where I'm going'."
It killed him, but that was his response.
This was because she was not his to have.
She was golden. Nothing beat her. She smiled through pain and made you believe it.
But life never works out according to plan and seven years later find both Joker and Carrie at places they never thought they'd be; Joker with his brothers and Chaos family, and Carrie as a divorce and single mom. When she's stranded on the side of a road with a flat tire, fate brings these two together again. But while Joker recognizes Carrie right away, he's changed quite a bit from the boy she once knew and though there's something familiar about him, Carrie doesn't recognize him.
I'm not sure what it was about this, but both of these characters just worked for me. Carrie has been through so much in her life; lost her sister when she was young, her husband left her for another woman while she was still pregnant, and she's barely able to make ends meet. But through all that she still maintains the woman that she's always been; nurturing, caring, sweet and she's an amazing mother. Joker was a grouchy and brooding biker for the first quarter of the story and fights the connection between them. his demons from his past run deep and he doesn't want to taint Carrie with them. But when Carrie's ex makes life harder for her, Joker knows that he'll do everything in his power to give her the sweet she deserves.
I lay under him, breathing heavily, clasped to him like I never wanted to let him go (and thinking I actually didn't), glorying in the feel of his filling me, watching with what could be nothing but utter glee as the shudders of his orgasm shifted through his powerful body as the fragments of the glory of mine whispered though mine.
Joker is definitely up there with my favorite KA heroes. Something about this man was just so devastatingly perfect. The way he steps up to the plate with both Carrie and her baby son will make you swoon. Guaranteed.
I think I might be falling in love with you..."
"Then quit thinkin', Carrie, because I know I'm fallin' for you.
While I can't say that the story was super quick paced, it wasn't the slow drag either. There's a little bit of suspense thrown in with cameos from some KA favorites of the past; Luke, Knight, Lee, Hank, and so much more. At the heart of it, it was a heart warming romance that had just as much sexy as it had of the swoons.
The one thing I've come to love from KA's alphas is the way they take care of what's theirs and Joker was definitely no exception.
I'm in love with your ex-wife...
I've loved her since high school, man. She means everything to me. You gotta drag her down, that'll suck, but I'll pick her back up. You gotta rip her apart, I'll fuckin' hate watchin' it, but I'll put her back together. Do what you gotta do to make you feel like you got the bigger dick. But know this, in the end, it's gonna be her and me.
I haven't enjoyed a recent KA release this much since Soaring and even that pales in comparison to this one. If you're looking for some vintage KA vibes this is one book you need to pick up. There's also a sneak peek into the next book at the end and that left me practically salivating for High's story. Even though I was hoping for Rush's book, I'll take High after that set up. He already caught my interest here as a secondary character so I cannot wait to see what his story brings.
5 RIDE STEADY STARS
I love Kristen Ashley so much!!!It's the only author whose books are so long but I still wish there were more pages!!Even if it was 1000 pages I would read it!!I loved this book so much that I read it slowly because I didn't want to finish it!!I loved this story,it has smart dialogues,it was full of emotions and the love story was amazing!!In my opinion this is the best book in this series!
OMG my poor Joker...he has a difficult life,with a jerk father.The only good thing he knows in his life was Carissa, the girl from his school and then when he becomes a part of Chaos Motorcycle Club they become his family...Now after years he will meet again Carissa who has her own problems...A jerk ex husband and a baby...
I freaking love this book..for Joker...he is such an amazing character!!I don't think there are words to express how much I love him!!He was so perfect and cute with Travis..I was swooning when these two were together!And Carissa is just amazing!!She only wanted to protect her son!These characters were meant to be together!!Whenever they were together you could feel their attraction,passion and their powerful chemistry!
I will not say anything about the writing because it's Kristen Ashley..and everybody knows how amazing she writes!I only wants to say that I felt this story was more realistic and this affected me and made me fell for this so hard!!
OMG I can't believe that this book is over...I want to read it again and again!I'm also excited for the next book in this series!!!
2.5 but I’ll bump it to 3 because there were some moment Stars
I was going to wait and post this tomorrow morning but I figured I’d just get it over with now.
Honestly I just don’t know what to say. Normally I am a reader who is pretty easy to please. I don’t get that critical about a book but for some authors I have certain expectations and KA is one of them. Of her books I’ve read they have always been 4 or 5 stars.
She let me down with Ride Steady. I enjoyed Shy and Hop’s books and just expected more from this one.
I was hoping everything would come together for me but it didn’t. I wanted a little more Chaos excitement but didn’t get it. I wanted Joker and Carissa to work a little harder at coming together but that didn’t happen either. There was too much going on with the ex-husband and it got tiresome. I expected to shed a few tears and I didn’t. I also expected to get all hot and bothered and that didn’t happen either. :/
I didn’t dislike Carissa and Joker but I didn’t love them either. I did get some “moments” in the book. My updates captured those. I enjoyed Elvira. She always makes me laugh. Tack was Tack which I loved and little Travis was a cutie.
I know a lot of my GR friends loved this and believe me I am tickled pink that you did. I get that. I really do. I’m just bummed that it didn’t work for me. But oh well. You win some….you lose some. In the end….
FULL REVIEW NOW POSTED:
“Jesus, you do it for me.”
“I do…what for you?”
“Everything.”
I always say it—there’s nothing like a Kristen Ashley book, my heart skipping a beat at the mere act of turning that very first page, but a love story set within the realm of the Chaos Motorcycle Club is a reading experience like no other, a thrill ride that leaves our hearts blazing in its wake from the sheer emotion present in every single word. A story of second chances in life, of two people who find all they’ve ever dreamed of having in each other, but also a story of families, of people who might not share the same blood but who would do anything for one another—this is in many ways the ‘quintessential’ Kristen Ashley novel, her unmistakable style and tone of storytelling present in every word, letter, and comma, and yet there was something quite unique about this story, and its powerful message of never losing hope, and the true meaning of family. I’ve loved every book in this series, but I lost my heart to Joker and Carissa’s story, and no amount of re-reading would give it back.
“It’s you. It’s always been you. It’ll always be you. F*ckin’ always.”
Carson “Joker” Steele’s childhood was not an easy one, raised in an abusive home by a drunken single father, but he eventually found his path in life by becoming a patched member of the Chaos Motorcycle Club, a brotherhood of men whose unbreakable bond and loyalty make them family. And even though he worked hard at leaving his painful past behind and only forging forward, he never forgot those who showed him kindness when his life had been a living nightmare, cherishing in particular the memory of a beautiful cheerleader who was never his but whose smile could light up even the darkest of his days.
“One day, Carson Steele, you’re going to be a magnificent man… And one day, you’ll see past what you’ve been taught and you’ll believe it too.”
All Carissa Teodoro ever wanted in life was a family of her own, to be a good wife and a great mother, and while she once believed she could have it all, her life steadily moving in that direction since her high school days, she finds herself divorced in her twenties, with a baby, no friends, no family, no money, a dead-end job, and her self-confidence in smithereens. The only bright light in her otherwise glum life is her little baby boy, a child she would do anything for, and whose happiness and wellbeing remain her only objectives in life.
“I hadn’t been about me. Not for a long time. Maybe never. I had been coasting in life for so long. I actually didn’t know who me was.”
When Carissa finds herself stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire, the last person she expects to come to her rescue is a man from her past who never knew all that she had felt for him before he up and left. And although Joker’s feelings for her have not changed in the eight years since he last saw her, he is now convinced more than ever that a woman like Carissa deserves a better man than him, so he fights her pull at every turn, prepared to protect her and her child, but unwilling to claim her as his own.
“She doesn’t need dark. She never shoulda had it and she’s had a lifetime of it. What I got in me gets loose, it’ll engulf her.”
As Carissa’s troubles only intensify, Carson finds himself falling even more in love with the young mother whose selflessness and determination never waver, never lose focus, and eventually giving himself permission to do so too. Her honesty and compassion start melting his frosty disposition, revealing a man who has waited all his life to love unconditionally, and to become someone important to a woman like Carissa. They fill each other’s lives with the kind of happiness they both dreamed of finding in life, supporting one another and feeling something they had long forgotten how to feel—hope.
“It was always you. Only you. I was into you back then, Carissa, in a big fuckin’ way. And that hasn’t changed.”
But as their past and present start colliding, Joker and Carissa’s bond is put to the test, showing us how unfaltering true love can be and how much the support of those we love the most can empower a person to cope with any curveball life throws our way. Against her trademark backdrop of charismatic secondary characters we already know and love, Kristen Ashley has given us another ‘badass’ alpha male who wastes little time to claim his leading lady, and a ‘kickass’ heroine who might have always dreamt of a knight in shining armour riding in to save the day, but whose strength and resilience make her pick herself up and then fight never to be brought down again. This was the kind of story that I had a hard time letting go of, certain scenes replaying in my mind over and over again, and filling me with an overwhelming sense of hope and positivity. It’s a story that tells us never to throw in the towel in life, to keep fighting for happiness, and when we find it, to never let go of it. A true Kristen Ashley classic, perfect beginning to end.
“I’ve loved her since high school, man. She means everything to me. You gotta drag her down, that’ll suck, but I’ll pick her back up. You gotta rip her apart, I’ll f*ckin’ hate watchin’ it, but I’ll put her back together. Do what you gotta do to make you feel like you got the bigger dick. But know this, in the end, it’s gonna be her and me.”
“It’s you. It’s always been you. It’ll always be you. Fuckin’ always.”
Seriously there really is no real way to ever put into words what her books do to me ... but a whole bunch of random words maybe that make a little bit more sense. Because those of you that know will get the point; it isn't about just one thing but *** e v e r y t h i n g*** that makes a KA completely and utterly enjoyable for me...
and if that isn't enough, this quote made my heart smile and swoon ...
“I think I might be falling in love with you,”
“Then quit thinkin’, Carrie, because I know I’m fallin’ for you.”
I have come to expect that with Kristen Ashley the love story is the main story and anything else is just in the background. Her books feed the hopeless romantic in me and while I was getting that in spades, this one also managed to tap into one of my weak spots...babies. Any man, no matter how tough and gruff and black their hearts, who can melt for a special woman and baby can own my heart any day. Ride Steady had your raw, had your gritty, your life lessons and most importantly their love ... all different kinds of love, all giving you that feel good feelin'. Totally recommended if you are a fan of KA!
2nd Read, Feb. 2022 — 4.5 Stars
Haven’t read the final book and all the other novellas in between, but this one hands down is the best in the series. 🙌 Will up the rating when I’m through with all the books and doing another round of re-reading. 🙃
(Read as an Audiobook)
1st Read, Jan. 2021 — 4.5 Stars
There’s something about two people who love each other but think they don’t deserve the other person so they just pine and love quietly that gets me all up in my feels and (in KA words) makes my soul sigh. Well, to be accurate, it’s more the H doing the pining while the h doing the chasing/nudging. In any case, I heart this book.
“It was always you. Only you. I was into you back then, Carissa, in a big fuckin’ way … And that hasn’t changed.”
The prologue was the best. Mostly because you got to see the H *essentially* worshipped the ground the h walked on from afar while being a silent, broody teenager. All before they went their separate ways, and eventually crossed path again approximately a decade later. Only now, the H was a badass biker, and the h a divorced mom to an eight month old baby boy.
“I like you…” I got up on my toes to get in his face, “a lot”.
“You haven’t made that a secret.”
“Maybe I should start doing that,” I retorted …
“Butterfly, advice. Don’t start playin’ new games when you’re already winnin’ the one you’re in.”
It took a while for the H to get his head out of his arse and (finally) made a go at the h. When he did, he was a H who ticked all the boxes. The h seemed like (excuse my language) a moron at the beginning for marrying her sleazy cheating ex-husband, but her life choices were justifiable. Other than that, she was a great, hard working, and loving h.
“Right there, his world was done. Because there was nothing that would be better than Carissa Teodoro standing a foot away with her hand warm on his, grinning up at him. Nothing.”
Baby Travis stole the show with his antics. Most importantly, he stole my heart with his incoherent mumblings that were narrated sooo convincingly in a perfect baby voice I couldn’t help but want to cuddle him and salute the narrator for a job excellently done. Not to mention, every single scene with him and the H made my ovaries explode, LOL.
“I’m in love with your ex-wife. I’ve loved her since high school, man. She means everything to me. You gotta drag her down, that’ll suck, but I’ll pick her back up. You gotta rip her apart, I’ll fuckin’ hate watchin’ it, but I’ll put her back together. Do what you gotta do to make you feel like you got the bigger dick. But know this, in the end, it’s gonna be her and me. So take your shot. Spend your money. Score those marks on your soul. Scar your son. Push her to the point she can’t stand the sight of you. But do it knowin’ that’s all on you. Just like everything that went before, it’s all on you.”
As if it couldn’t get any better, the ex-husband drama, the family aspect, the girlfriends posse, the biker action stuff, and the cameos from across KA series were extremely fun to read too. Overall, this was just such a sweet, heartmelting story with characters who were impossible not to root for. I wanna thank whoever mentioned this book to me. By whoever I mean Lu Han.
RIDE STEADY DID ME RIGHT!
I really enjoyed listening to this one even though it was a long audio (17 hours). If you haven’t read a Kristen Ashley book and want to start with this one - you can because KA writes her books as standalones. Another thing about KA books are they focus on characters that are more mature (30 years and older). She does have a couple books with younger characters but the majority of them are about mature couples who are family orientated.
LOVED IT!
SERIES:
Own the Wind (Chaos, #1) by Kristen Ashley Fire Inside (Chaos, #2) by Kristen Ashley Ride Steady (Chaos, #3) by Kristen Ashley Walk Through Fire (Chaos, #4) by Kristen Ashley
Each book can be read as a standalone.
It's finally here! Happy Release Day to Joker and Carissa!
Reading a Kristen Ashley novel - any Kristen Ashley novel - is like spending an afternoon with your best friend, listening as she tells you all about her latest (and greatest) adventure. Regardless of where you're at or what you're doing, it's comfortable, laugh out loud funny, and sometimes even poignant. It's also always guaranteed to be time well spent!
Ride Steady is the 3rd book in the Chaos series, and Joker and Carissa's story is both heartbreaking and beautiful. There were moments I wanted to reach through the pages and kill someone, and moments I wanted to reach through and love them. To say Ride Steady took me on a roller-coaster ride of emotions is to say the least, and I loved every minute of it!
Even though this works as a standalone, it works much better when read in order. And besides, why would anyone deprive themselves of the beauty to be found when badass biker dudes meet their match in the form of a stubborn, independent woman who drives them crazy while bringing them to their knees? So, yeah! Just read them in order!
Excerpt from Own the Wind...
Joker was tall, built, not bulky but also not lean, just muscled in a powerful way. He held his body and moved like he knew exactly what his frame was capable of and what it was capable of was a lot. He had a thick head of black hair with more than a small amount of wave to it. He wore it long, hanging in his face and down to his shoulders. He also had a full beard that, unlike most of the brothers who sported facial hair, he kept trimmed. The beard made him appear older than his years. The tan he had made him look weathered and again older than he was. But it was his steel-gray eyes that told the tale. That steel was like a shield, holding everyone back from the mysteries that lay within. This was kind of a weird coincidence, since his name was Carson Steele. And I didn't know him, but I knew from those eyes there was no doubt there were mysteries that lay within.
When I first read that description of Joker, I laid claim. When I read that description again(cause hello, it's a Kristen Ashley book), I needed his story in my life. It took two long years to finally find out who Carson "Joker" Steele is and how he came into Chaos MC. The prologue of Ride Steady deals with Joker when he was a teenager. His home life isn't the best and he's wanting to break free from it. As he does, he knows that he'll leave behind people who matter most to him. People that were there for Carson, knowingly or unknowingly, who gave him something that his home life couldn't or wouldn't. One of these people is Carissa Teodoro, his high school crush. Though they hardly interacted in school, with his good bye at a heartbreaking scene, you felt what could have been with a short conversation and a kiss on the cheek.
As years go by, Joker and Carissa meet up again though one doesn't know who the other is. Change has come in many forms in their lives. Joker has joined Chaos and is doing what he loves in the shop. Carissa is a single mother making ends meet as best as she can. Even as one tries to pushes the other away, when the times comes, their relationship comes easy though there are some obstacles that come or try to get in their happiness. Joker and Carissa's words spoken to each other are honest. There are no games played. They say what they mean and do as they say. Having had feelings for each other for so long, they just click perfectly. Family comes not only by blood but by being there when no one else has. We get to meet Joker's new family which in time becomes Carissa's. There's a message there, folks. Savor it.
Ride Steady is also about Chaos and the threat that is making them take more notice of the dangerous situation that's coming. With this, we get a whole smorgasbord of old friends that make appearances. If you're anything like me, when I see a name, I start smiling huge.
As with all KA's prologues, though this was short, it got to the point, and it doesn't disappoint. As Joker and Cassie live out their wonderful world, you'll take something out of Ride Steady. What that is to you, is for you to find out. As for me, well that's my secret not to share.
Favorite lines:
"Steady, Butterfly."
"I think I might be falling in love with you,"...
"Then quit thinkin', Carrie, because I know I'm fallin' for you."...
"I'm gonna cry."...
"Then for fuck's sake, get over here so you can be in my arms while you do it."
"Who would have thought my Carson Steele would catch butterflies."
CLAIM. CLAIM. CLAIM!
I'm claiming Joker's ass so everybody back away.
"It's you. It's always been you.
It'll always be you. Fuckin' always."
I'm relatively new to KA books, it's only my 4th from her and damn, another great one. How could I not love it? Impossible. Oh, and it can be read as a standalone because I haven't read first 2 in this series and was ok with the story.
It starts with a lovely flashback from high school, where we can see how Carissa and Carson met. He was reclusive teenager, living with abusive father while she was beautiful homecoming queen, dating the popular quarterback Aaron.
And ends with a wonderful epilogue, which was just the cherry on top of this beautiful story.
The middle of the book was just as good. Few years later, they meet by chance and Carissa doesn't recognize Carson as he looks like total badass biker, all beard and long hair. She needs help, he offers and let the story begin...
We have angst and drama with dick ex-husband Aaron, we have great relationship development, we have sweet, we have love, we have both tender and rough sex and whole lot of swooning moments. The VIP service on a beat up 20 year old Toyota, the first kiss, goofy but strong Carissa, Joker with a baby, all rough on the outside but so mushy and warm on the inside, they were all wonderful. And seeing them together making a family just made my heart flutter.
No to mention all those fabulous characters, like Ms. Heely, Mr. Robinson, Linus, the Chaos brothers and the girls. I loved their interactions and how protective they were of each other. Oh, and yes, I can't forget that Knight Sebring was there as well, ah my dark knight hero, *sigh*.
Once again KA wrote a great story with kickass alpha. Manly man biker simply does it for me. Because Joker by himself...
But Joker with his Butterfly...
While Joker with his Butterfly and with Travis...
Highly recommended!
Ride Steady is another fantastic KA read! Every single time I pick up one of her books, I feel like I am coming home. The combination of strong alpha males, sassy heroines, strong family undertones, quick dialogue (sometimes a little too quick), and just enough action to get my blood pumping really make me happy. The best thing about KA for me is that the main characters always fight things out together. I don't have to agonize through half (or three quarters) of the book waiting for them to connect. Ride Steady was just another slice of heaven from the KA pie!
description
Carson aka "Joker" is a member of the Chaos MC. He designs and builds cars and motorcycles for the club shop Ride. He is a fighter for an underground fighting circuit. He survived a traumatizing childhood in order to become the man that he is today. He is a gruff man that rarely smiles. While on the road, he runs into an old high school crush that is stranded on the side of the road. She needs help with a flat tire. Holding her 9 month old on her hip, he offers her help. He recognizes her right away and because he looks so different, she doesn't know who he is.
Carissa aka "Carrie" is a single mother who is just struggling to get by. Her wealthy husband has divorced her for a beautiful model. She is working as a cashier at the local grocery store and living paycheck to paycheck. When Carson swoops in and saves the day, everything changes for her.
description
In reality Carissa wasn't just a high school crush for Carson. She offered him comfort in times of pain and torment. What Carson didn't know is that Carissa had feelings for him as well.
Joker and Carrie form a friendship. Chaos adopts Carrie and helps her get back on her feet.
“We’ve all had our times. And if we’re lucky, we’ve all had people that took our back during those times. You’ve been unlucky, honey. But your luck has changed. Roll with it.”-Joker
Carrie is attracted to Joker and tries to get him to notice her. At first, he is hesitant because he feels like he isn't good enough for her. And yet, she manages to break down the barriers. They begin a friendship that quickly turns into more.
“Waited eight years to sit and have a Blizzard with you, Carson.”-Carrie
The closer they come together, Joker begins to worry that the truth of his identity will be revealed. Will she leave him when she realizes who he is?
“I think I might be falling in love with you,” I blurted and watched his face change to an expression I would have rushed to my phone to capture if I wasn’t captivated by it, not wanting to miss an instant. “Then quit thinkin’, Carrie, because I know I’m fallin’ for you.”
description
Joker and Carrie's story is one of triumph over hard times. A beautiful second chance romance for two souls that were meant to be together. I absolutely adored baby Travis and all of the Chaos crew back in action. Also, there was the added surprise of some of KA's other famous characters making a special cameo appearance. The conflict in Ride Steady is centered around family. Although Chaos is a MC, the issues of the club unfold in the background. When Joker stakes claim on Carrie, all bets are off.
“I’m Chaos. And, Butterfly, I claimed you, and you might not get this because we haven’t discussed it so I’ll make it clear now. Claimin’ you makes you Chaos too. The fight might get ugly, and you gotta be prepared for that. But the way you got your head sorted and the firepower you got at your back, you will never lose.”
description
Overall, I highly recommend Ride Steady to anyone who loves a tender "second chance" romance. Carrie is a fun-loving heroine with an aura jam packed with joy! Joker is a perfect match for her. I don't consider this book to be a straight forward MC Romance so if you are looking for a standard MC book then this would not be the book to start with. However, if you are a fan of KA's work then this is a must read! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I cannot wait for more CHAOS!
Thinking of Joker, Carissa, and baby Travis so I listened to Ride Steady again today. This is absolutely one of my top five all time favorite KA reads and have listened to it a couple dozen times since it’s release. I love everything about it...especially Joker!  photo smitten_zps82ef75c9-1_zps3c608306.gif
5 Heartfelt Stars!!
I love KA and have read everything she's written....twice. Okay, okay, I'll admit I've read a few of them three or four times, but this one will hold a special place on my KA favorites shelf, these characters just flat out captured my heart, Ride Steady was an emotional and heartwarming journey.
Carissa has been going through hell because of her a$$hole ex-husband and his wealthy influential family. She is in desperate need of a hero when Joker literally comes to her rescue. Joker is just the man she needs.
“She means everything to me. You gotta drag her down, that’ll suck, but I’ll pick her back up. You gotta rip her apart, I’ll fuckin’ hate watchin’ it, but I’ll put her back together. Do what you gotta do to make you feel like you got the bigger dick. But know this, in the end, it’s gonna be her and me.”
Both Joker and Carissa have baggage that will break your heart, you'll find yourself hoping, praying, and cheering for their HEA!! Joker is our typical KA hero, he's a sexy uber alpha that will make you fall in love (once again) with yet another KA Hero, I completely adored him for the way he took care of not only Carissa & her baby Travis but also the people who are important to him.
This one had a lot of heart warming moments between Joker and Tack that made me fall in love with Tack....again!! it was great to be back in the Chaos family fold (as well as with several characters from other series/books).
“If she’s the girl and you’re it for her…then you’ll ride steady.”
All in all a great read, I really loved Joker, and I absolutely freaking adored Carissa and Travis, the three of them completely captured my heart.
3.5 stars!
I'm rating it up and not down because, duh, it's KA.
KA has always excelled in writing about characters going through their redemption. She did it wonderfully with Soaring, RC Regret among others and she did it again here. While her previous books were usually focused on her heroines, Ride Steady was both Carissa's and Joker's equally.
Carissa was down but not out. She's young but she's already been through through a lot already. At her worst time, she reconnected with Carson Steele AKA Joker. Joker has also been through a lot in his relatively young life. He's battled adversity to find family and belonging among his Chaos brothers. Their connection was beautiful and poignant. It's one of those things that reminded me why I love to read romance in the first place.
I found that refreshing. Also, no crazy exes here. Even Carissa's ex was humanized and layered. The only character who fits the evil mold was Carson's father, and I found great satisfaction in hating him. Carissa and Joker's relationship was relatively smooth-sailing. Don't get me wrong. There were outside influences who tried to keep them apart but they were small bumps. They were resolved easily and quickly. I liked that it was easily resolved but at the same time, because of the length, I couldn't help but skim through some parts.
As much I really liked this book, I couldn't help but feel disconnected by how similar these two 25-year old characters to the rest of the characters who are in their 40s, late 30s and maybe even 50s. I'm not saying that Carissa or Joker should act like immature hacks because I'd hate that but there's nothing in their speech, their action or their thought processes that would indicate their ages. AT ALL. Jokers sounds like a 45 year old man and Carissa sounds like she's in her late 30s. And I kept thinking, "They're 25!" And I have to admit that it took me out of the story a little bit.
Other than that, I really liked this one. It's vintage KA minus the caricature evil characters. Loved Carson Steele. He's one of the sweetest KA alpha I've ever read. He was loyal and steady throughout the book. Overall, it's great to be back in this world of Chaos again, and I reckon, I'll keep coming back for more because...why not?
Thought about this overnight. 2.5 but will up it to 3 as I do love KA and it takes a lot of effort to write these books.
-------------------------------------------
I am annoyed with myself. I knew about 20% into this one that it was going to annoy me. I should have given up. But as I love KA I decided to go onwards and upwards. Mistake, big mistake.
I saw all the reviews from those who got ARCs prior to release date. I was intrigued. I love KA. Tate Jackson is a firm favourite of mine. Even her PNR were hits for me.
I thought they were both immature.
Hated her inner dialogue (thanks a bunch for that Karen,)
I was bored. The whole ex husband thing was stupid. Why would he do an about turn like that?
I was supposed to drool over Joker and the kid... didn't happen.
Hate giving KA low ratings. I usually love her books.
It did nothing for me, nada, nowt, niets...
Will I read her other books in the future. Probably.
Her situation.... as a mother, she has rights. She had none here. OK, her ex was a big wig in the legal world but still.... and she living in a fucking horrible place, with minimum support from the ex. C'mon, gimme a break.
This to me was perfect, I loved it, it was pure KA goodness and I devoured each and every word. Seriously I don't really need to tell you much, except that Joker is way up high on my list of fucking awesome KA alpha's.
This is a second chance romance, between the popular cheerleader who was in the mean girls gang (although, she was never a mean girl) and the sexy troubled loner who all the girls lusted after.
It's been awhile since they have seen each other, but whilst Carrie is a divorced single mum and down on her luck, Carson 'Joker' Steele is finally with a loving family; his brothers in the Chaos MC. He is designing custom cars for a living at Ride and is content with life, and certainly not looking to hook up with the perfect girl from high school.
When he finds her on the side of the freeway with a flat tyre, he comes to her rescue in true KA style.
Chaos love Joker, and they eventually convince him that he deserves a happy life with a loving woman and when Carrie turns up at the clubhouse with pie, they go all out to encourage him to let go of his past and look to a future.
"She brought him pie,"
"Fuckin' brilliant,"
"Does Joker even like pie?"
But my heart squeezed.
Didn't he like pie?
Didn't everyone like pie?
Oh no! What if he didn't like pie?
^^^^Classic KA!
I loved catching up with so many of the characters we have come to know and love from all the other series, we get an appearance from Knight, Hawk, Lee, Hector and of course the Rock Chicks, Gwen and the hilarious Elvira!
Honestly this book was swoon city, y'all KA fans are gonna love it.
"Wanted you,"
"In high school, I wanted you. So bad, my life went to shit, like it went to shit every single fucking day, to give my head some peace, I'd draw you."
LOVED!
Standalone but part of the fantastic Chaos Series, told in dual POV, with a few chapters from Tack <3
Now, let me tell you, I have an issue when I finish a new KA book that I loved. I am always a bit depressed that I have finished it and have months to wait for yet another new KA book. There have been times I have been tempted to run head first into the nearest wall and give myself a case of amnesia just so I can start the book again and experience it all new.
I adored this book, loved Joker and Carissa. Their relationship was beautiful to experience, and once they were together no unnecessary drama or misunderstandings within the relationship, which as a general rule, I prefer the drama to come from outside the relationship, so I was happy with that.
And we had an entire cast of awesomeness from other series'/books that just makes me want to go back and re read nearly every previous KA series I have read - well played Ms Ashley, well played!
Joker just made my heart bleed, the prologue gives us an understanding as to why, from the glimpses we have seen of him in previous Chaos novels he is as he is. But also serves to highlight, just how much of a family the Chaos MC are, and how they all belong and have found "brothers" and forged their own family in that.
And Carissa, maybe beaten down but not broken, and still willing to put herself out there and go after something she wants. I loved her.
All in, it was a great read that I never wanted to end. I have no idea what I am going to read now, as NOTHING can beat Kristen Ashley at her best. And this was just that. Her best.
Ride Steady is the story of Joker and Carissa. When the two were in high school she was the cheerleader and he was the loner outcast. Little did they know that they both wanted the other one. With his dad haunting him and a past he can't escape, Joker leaves high school behind and they do not see each other again until seven years later.
Seven years later and Carissa is divorced and has a baby to raise. Her exhusband is an asshole and making her life hell. When a biker changes her tire on the side of the road, Carissa is beyond grateful for his help. But she doesn't recognize the biker as the boy she knew in high school. Over time the two become connected as the club brings her into its life and Carissa begins to fall for Joker. But will both of their pasts destory their future?
 photo pagebreak.png
I really enjoyed Joker and Carissa stories. I am the same age as the main characters so it was nice to read a Kristen Ashley novel in a different age group (I love all her age groups just saying I could connect more with the character when they're in their twenties). I loved Carissa as a heroine, how she worked hard to support herself and her baby, how she ate generic brand foods but bought the best brand foods for her child. A lot of shit was thrown her way but she waded through it and came out strong and happy.
Joker took a little bit for me to like him. I felt sorry for his past but didn't like how he tried pushing Carissa away at the beginning. But I'll give it to him, once he committed he was all in and that was admirable. I like how his past with his father didn't make him a bad man but a good one, he didn't let that crap come through and he didn't take it out on Carissa or the club members. And he was amazing with baby Travis.
Overall an enjoyable KA novel, not my favorite one but still a good one. I did notice there weren't too many descriptions on clothing or furniture which was much appreciated. And the excerpt at the end had me excited for the next book in the series!
Reading a Kristen Ashley novel - any Kristen Ashley novel - is like spending an afternoon with your best friend, listening as she tells you all about her latest (and greatest) adventure. Regardless of where you're at, or what you're doing, it's comfortable, laugh out loud funny, and sometimes even poignant. It's also always guaranteed to be time well spent!
Ride Steady is the 3rd book in the Chaos series, and Joker and Carissa's story is both heartbreaking and beautiful. There were moments I wanted to reach through the pages and kill someone, and moments I wanted to reach through and love them. To say Ride Steady took me on a roller-coaster ride of emotions is to say the least, and I loved every minute of it!
Even though this works as a standalone, it works much better when read in order. And besides, why would anyone deprive themselves of the beauty to be found when bad-ass biker dudes meet their match in the form of a stubborn, independent woman who drives them crazy while bringing them to their knees? So, yeah! Just read them in order!
A heartwarming second chance romance, Ride Steady left me with a smile on my face. Joker has joined the ranks of my favorite KA men. The romance was sweet and healing, and all the side relationships/interactions just made this story that much more special. Honestly, one of my favorite things about a KA story, her ability to wrap you up in the world she has created - I never want to say goodbye.
It's you. It's always been you. It'll always be you. Fuckin' always."
In highschool, Carissa Teodoro was the nice popular cheerleader who had the rich popular boyfriend girls went crazy for. Carson Steele however, was the the loner bad boy who most steered clear of. Carissa secretly crushed on Carson, but she didn't think he felt the same way. Carson did feel the same for her, but he knew he was not worth someone as good as Carissa. Carson has a terrible home life with his father repeatedly abusing him, and didn't want to bring someone like Carissa into that. When he finally has had enough of his father, he leaves but is surprised when Carissa sees him leaving. She wishes him well, and they both part ways with so much left unsaid.
“I am going to heal you, Carson.”
Years later, Carson who is now known as Joker, is part of the Chaos MC. Life is good for him. He finally has a family in the brothers of the MC. He's finally found a place he can belong. He's back in town, and has been for a while. He never thought he'd see Carissa again but he does when she ends up with a flat tire. Life has not been so great for Carissa. She got married to her highschool sweetheart and even have a baby son together. But, he's tossed her away for a new and younger woman. When Joker shows up to help her with the flat tire, there is something about him that feels familiar but she can't put her finger on it. She doesn't realize he's Carson because he looks so different, but something about him lures her in. There is an undeniable attraction between them, even though Joker plays it off like it's nothing. He's trying to resist her, but it becomes hard to do when his brothers and their old ladies embrace Carissa into their fold.
I really loved both of these characters. Joker, oh, Joker. He freaking melted my heart with his sweetness. I was a puddle of goo anytime he was with Carissa's baby son Travis. It was just so cute. Joker was also very hot. I loved how he took care of Carissa and Travis. Carissa, I also really loved. She's been through so much, with the losses in her life and her marriage not working like planned. I liked that she was still strong, and quite the happy going person despite all that. I also thought she was an awesome mother who would do anything for Travis's well being. Together, Joker and Carissa were perfect. I loved watching their relationship grow. And the steam was pretty high.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There were a few issues I had with it, like how Joker and Carissa were both 25 years old, but they didn't really sound like it to me. They felt much older than that. I also felt some parts were a tad bit slow for my liking. Maybe because this was a long book, I don't know, but some parts I skimmed a bit. Other than that, I did like it. I liked that we get bits of Tack's POV. And I was definitely liking that scene with all those badasses from many of KA's books together. I swooned hard. The ending was great, and the epilogue was pretty awesome as well. It was a very good book with great characters. I definitely think you should give this a read.
ENDLESS BUTTERFLY STARS
“Who would have thought my Carson Steele would catch butterflies.”
This is my new KA favourite book and Joker is sharing top spot with Tack and Hawk for my KA favourite men. And thank you KA for giving us moments of Tack's POV and a sweet cameo of Hawk! Ride Steady is simply KA at her best!
Joker had my heart from the first few words of the prologue! He's my man! Carissa was one kick-ass heroine and I adored Joker's relationship with Travis! I didn't want this to end!
 photo image.jpg1_zpslejscxah.jpg
I was head over heels for their romance. This book made me feel so much and most of it was just gooey good.
 photo ride steady_zpshu27anw3.jpg
There were moments where I seriously wanted to hurt someone, moments when I laughed out loud, times when my stomach was doing back flips, times when I wanted to cry and scream and of course, many times where I just wanted to wrap Joker, Carissa and Travis up in my arms and squeeze them with delight!
“Yeah, Carrie, it’s always you. It’s always been you. It’ll always be you. Fuckin’ always.”
This story was heartbreaking and heartwarming. While KA revisits similar themes sometimes - this was about two high school kids both wanting the same thing but having to go through a lot of dark to find their way to the light in each others' arms - she always makes each story its own. This was no different.
I highly recommend this book to all KA fans and to those of you who dig a hot manly biker man and a sassy, sexy single mom falling madly in love - this is for you!
Ride Steady quickly grab my heart and soul with the prologue. I fell hard and fast for Carson Steel and just fell harder the further I read into the book, he was an AMAZING character. I also loved the heroine Carissa, she was an excellent mother doing everything she could for her son Travis with what little she had. For me what Kristen Ashley does so well are her characters. Even the secondary characters shine and add so much to my overall enjoyment.
What I found that was lacking for me was the heat. Yes, there was plenty of it but it usually gets me down there and I just did not feel it. Did I feel the attraction between Joker and Carrie, yep I did in a big way but I guess I just needed more.
With all the excellent reviews already posted, I’m going to make this one short and say that I really enjoyed this one. Was it my favorite KA book? NOPE. I felt it ended well for everyone who deserved it but it just did not stand up to some of the epilogues that I have read from her previous books.
Steele...to...Chaos...to...Joker - the perfect transition
Ride Steady was the perfect Kristen Ashley party I hoped for. The release day was planned...bubbly, snacks and family organised. I went to my Mum cave for reading hibernation with regular visits from my boys to check on my progress. Luckily it was hubby who caught me crying, gave me a cuddle and kiss on my cheek, with a - it will be ok Baby. Then it was my 11 year old son that I gave my smile and PG explanation of why the book was so good. My poor 8 year old copped the men can be so silly speech and why he needs to learn to respect his wife and marriage vows when he married in the future. My boys are used to the KA party, they know what to expect and go along with it with a smirk on their face.
I loved this story. From the sad and bad Carissa had faced from the douchewaffle ex-husband Aaron to the wonderful love and support she received when Chaos made her part of the family. I hated seeing what Carson had faced growing up, but loved the people who cared about and wanted better for him. This story covered every emotion. I loved, I hated, I laughed, I cried, I blushed and I felt the one thing that always leads me to a 5 star read...connection. These characters felt real to me. I want to visit Ride and Cherry in her office, I want to run into Lee, Indy and their family at La Delicias (hope I got the spelling correct) and I want to see hot guys on bikes ride past.
I've seen mentioned a few times that there wasn't enough angst or kidnapping in this one. Maybe KA is giving us what we want, no TSTL heroes and heroines. It was mentioned early on in the book that Chaos had learnt their lesson when Tyra was kidnapped (which was in Motorcyle Man). Chaos had taken every precaution that no more family would be hurt because of fallback. We don't see the kidnappings and retaliations because they did everything in their power to make their loved ones safe.
Ride Steady had everything I love in my favourite reads. A couple willing to work towards their happiness, hot and smexy scenes, great laughs, some reality and a little magic to make everything work out in the end. Kristen Ashley is still one of my favourite authors of all time and Ride Steady just reinforced it.
