All Night Long with a Cowboy

Rate this book
If you play with fire...

One of the most notorious cowboys in Cold River, Jensen Kittredge always has willing women with sweet smiles vying for a place in his bed. So when the prissy high school librarian sidles up to him in the most disreputable bar in town with a scowl on her face, he has no idea what to make of it. Much less the attraction he feels toward the bespectacled creature who wants something from him... but not that.
Yet.

Someone gets burned...

Harriett Barnett doesn't care for dens of iniquity-- or the insolent cowboy she certainly shouldn't find attractive. But one of her students needs her help, and if she needs to corral the infamous Jensen to save him, she will. Trouble is, the town's favorite Kittredge brother is a lot more than she bargained for. Harriett's happy little life is orderly and neat, just how she likes it--until Jensen blows it all apart with his particular brand of addictive passion. Can a modern-day schoolmarm really tame the wildest cowboy in town? Or is Harriet headed for a terrible fall?

Caitlin Crews discovered her first romance novel at the age of twelve, in a bargain bin at the local five and dime. It involved swashbuckling pirates, grand adventures, a heroine with rustling skirts and a mind of her own, and a seriously mouthwatering and masterful hero. The book (the title of which remains lost in the mists of time) made a serious impression. Caitlin was immediately smitten with romances and romance heroes, to the detriment of her middle school social life. And so began her life-long love affair with romance novels, many of which she insists on keeping near her at all times, thus creating a fire hazard of love wherever she lives.

Caitlin has made her home in places as far-flung as York, England and Atlanta, Georgia. She was raised near New York City, and fell in love with London on her first visit when she was a teenager. She has backpacked in Zimbabwe, been on safari in Botswana, and visited tiny villages in Namibia. She has, while visiting the place in question, declared her intention to live in Prague, Dublin, Paris, Athens, Nice, the Greek Islands, Rome, Venice, and/or any of the Hawaiian islands. Writing about exotic places seems like the next best thing to actually moving there.

She currently lives in Oregon with her animator/comic book artist husband and their menagerie of ridiculous animals.

All Night Long With a Cowboy by Caitlin Crews
Kittridge Ranch book #2 which is also connected with the Cold River Ranch series. Contemporary western romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but previous couples make appearances.
Harriet is the high school librarian working with students in a summer program. To motivate them, Harriet reaches out to Jensen to ask him to talk to her students.
Jensen is intrigued by Harriet. She dresses in old fashioned clothes and doesn’t seem to care what anyone thinks of her. She’s short but lifts her chin and can stare anyone down.

An emotional romance that is tender, smart and hot.
Jensen has deep issues that need healing and he gets help from Harriet and his brothers.
Learning to work with and for horses is a recurring theme in both series. Patience? Hard work? Acknowledging a living thing that needs daily care? All of this and more are parts of how the teens are redirected from delinquent behavior.
From this city girl, it just sounds like a lot of us rewarded and hard work!
I really liked the hero. He made it clear he didn’t care how she dressed as long as she was happy.

Excerpts that describe Harriet:
“She liked quiet. She liked cats. She enjoyed research, reading, and studying. She preferred comfortable clothes that she could move in and hairpins to keep her heavy hair from annoying her while moving. Most of all, she liked her own company.
She wasn’t sad when she was left alone. She was happy.”

“I believe you, Harriet,” he said in that rumbly way of his that made her, uncharacteristically, want to turn a few cartwheels.
That would be undignified. Appallingly unprofessional. And worst of all, profoundly silly.”

I received a copy of this from NetGalley.

I am a big fan of Caitlin Crews and her cowboy stories set in Cold River, Colorado. There's always a bit more to them than just an enjoyable story for die-hard romantics.
This one made me think a lot about being pigeonholed not only by other people, but also yourself and then feeling you have to live in a certain way to conform to the set expectations.

Meet Jensen Kittredge- a charming jock in high school, a ladies' man who never parks his truck anywhere for longer than one night, cheerful guy who knows how to diffuse any conflict or any serious talk by cracking a joke or two. People have very low expectations of him and being underestimated works for Jensen. Until Miss Harriet Bartlett, a newcomer in Cold River (why, she's only been living there for three years), announces she won a date with Jensen and would like to claim it. Not that she wants this date to be of a romantic kind-she needs a hero! or rather a role model, to be more precise, for an inspirational talk as a part of her summer school remedial program. Everyone laughs at her, including Jensen, who jumps from planes to fight fires in summer months and is taking care of the business side of the K-Bar (the Kittredge Ranch) and yet cannot believe anyone would see him as more than a barfly or the town clown. Who is this odd catlady-librarian wearing shapeless, frumpy outfits and why is Jensen suddenly thinking about her blue eyes nobody notices behind her huge glasses?

Is there a better gift than helping another person discover a hidden part of themselves which is pure good? Jensen needs to process and address some issues from his past, while Harriet is about to discover that her singledom wasn't due to her 'oddness' or her refusal to lower her expectation of being treated with respect, but more to the simple fact that she hadn't met her match. It is difficult to say who goes through more growth in the story.
There's also a secondary character-a teenager Harriet is heping to get back on track academically. Aiden comes from a family which has produced too many delinquents and he cannot shake off the weight of this reputation, while Jensen is a Kittredge and can rightly be proud of his hard-working, honest family. Both Jensen and Aiden want a second chance, but are afraid of trying and failing. Clearly, they can help each other, however incredible it may sound to the town.

Harriet ismy favourite character in the story. How could I not love this strong-willed, independent, selfless librarian who believes in informing, educating, neverkeeping knowledge or skills to herself, but sharing them in a kind and considerate way? all that and practical skirts with pockets. A woman after my heart.

Yes, there is also love and passion and quite a lot of steam, but there are also strong emotions that need to be recognised and managed. Once again, Caitlin Crews gives us an entertaining, swoonworthy story with fascinating characters! Can't wait for the next story in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin's Press for the review copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This is a Cowboy Romance, and this is the second book in the Kittredge Ranch series. I did read and review the first book in this series before picking up this book. This book is all about what happens when the weird librarian meets the town Cowboy playboy. The characters in this book was very developed, and I really loved Harriett the Librarian. There is some steamy times in this book. I loved the romance in this book, and I really enjoyed reading this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Press) or author (Caitlin Crews) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Harriet Barnett is a High School Librarian. Harriet loves her cats, all five of them. She dresses in her "older" lady style and is more of an introvert. But she's happy with who she is and her life. During the summer she has a program to help students that are struggling with their academics and life issues. But one of her students mocks the inspirational speakers she has had come in the past, he said that they don't really inspire and wouldn't inspire like say maybe Jensen Kittredge would.

And so Harriet's new quest is to get Jensen, the town's flirt/playboy to come and give a lecture during her summer program. First meeting for the two is when Harriet's shows up at the town bar as he's surrounded by some of his lady friends and asks to speak to him. Very fun scene I have to say. And so the story progresses. Harriet convincing Jensen to help her students, him trying to brush her off. His family not believing he's capable or able to do something like that and him rising to to the challenge. The two are intrigued by each other and a friendship develops, with underlining tension of sexual awareness. Harriet knows there is so much more to Jensen than he portrays to the town and Jensen she's the beauty that Harriet seems indifferent to. The two begin to explore their relationship and take it to the next level. Until they reach their HEA.

I like both characters but felt Jensen had much more depth and character growth than Harriet. I liked Harriet but felt like something was missing with her overall growth. Also the relationship at times seemed forced to me, by the writer, as though the emotion wasn't really there for either but going through the motions. I love Caitlin Crew/Megan Crane as an author. Her books are auto bye for me. But this one just didn't hit it out of the ballpark for me, it could have just been me and my mind frame at the time of reading.

I'm a lover of tropes and this opposites attract between a small town librarian unapologetic about her oddness and the cowboy notorious town's flirt definitely hit all the right spots!
The A+ banter and slowburn between Harriett and Jensen made of this book a real page turner. Playful and hot lovemaking between a virgin heroine that isn't just a clueless spinster—not afraid of getting after what she needs—and the infamous playboy sealed the deal for me. How refreshing!
What's even more refreshing was Harriett's own agency, her determination to stay true to herself and reach for things she wanted made her so endearing to me. I LOVED her.
I certainely very much enjoyed witnessing Jensen—tortured hero hiding behind the town's playboy facade—being brought to his senses by the seemingly innocuous town librarian and loved him for seeing and loving Harriett for who she is.
Bonus points for the very sweet and fulfilling epilogue. Highly recommend!

I had so much fun watching Harriet turn Jensen’s life upside down. She was self-reliant and more than capable of standing up for herself. When a bit of insecurity did arise, I felt its pinch along with her and resented those that had inadvertently caused the pain. But I have to say that I loved seeing her through Jensen’s eyes. Swoon!

Jensen was the fun loving, always smiling and good for a laugh, citizen in Cold River as well as his own family. Deep inside, however, he harbored a pain so intense, when revealed, it pretty much turned me into a sobbing mess. Harriet was exactly what he needed and while he might not have admitted it, it was fun watching him unknowingly accept it.

This was not only fun to watch, with Harriet’s scowls and Jensen’s lazy grins, it was heartbreaking as well. I loved pretty much everything about this. It’s apparent it is not the first introduction to this family or town, but I was never really lost due to the short background that was usually shared when the characters from the previous book(s) were introduced. This was my first by this author but it won’t be the last!

A bit of love/hate going on with this one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Crews crafts the best cowboys! I just love experiencing her stories. They are strong, hardworking, kind, mostly stubborn as heck, but loving and sweet. Jensen is a perfect example with a few more great qualities thrown in.
I actually had a tough time enjoying this story as much as I normally would. I did not care for his love interest, Harriett, most of the time. She is not who I would have created for him at all! She is bossy, demanding, prideful, and super stubborn. Just not the loving character he deserved, especially with his hidden pain.
While the storyline was delightful and I loved watching everyone evolve, All Night Long With a Cowboy just didn’t ring all of my bells. I, however, will not give up on this series. I just love it and love following all of the other characters through the stories! Her books make you wish there really was a Cold River to move to.
And No, you do not have to read them in order. There is plenty of back story to keep you comfy in the series.
5 Not The Total Cliche Stars
* * * * * Spoiler Free
This was not what I thought I was going to get. This was a Surprising 5 Star read for me. How did that happen...Well, this book used a troupe of the prissy librarian and the randy cowboy to lure me in. Easy reading and nothing to think about...except that is not what exactly happened.
Caitlin Crews took what has been a premise forever and used it to give her readers a story that examined some very serious issues we all could learn from. We all have been in situations where we behave a certain way because it was expected of us.
It could be an innocent thing like being called the "baby of the family" to a more serious labeling of how generations of a family have been tagged "good for nothing". It is the understanding of this labeling, from siblings and parents, to those of a community, to those we label ourselves and how we manifest them.
This focus on these actions, those by each of these main characters and town had me captivated. The real questions and answers given were something each of us could take away. This is the beauty of romance books, in my opinion. Real-life issues explored, sometimes things we wouldn't usually think about, and then presented beautifully wrapped in a story focused on relationships.
This story was fun, strong, and if you are willing to see the lessons out there, truly eye-opening. Also, don't forget, it is a romance book that has all the needed chemistry and fun Caitlin Crews knows how to write.
5 Stars!
I loved this addition to the Kittredge Ranch Series. Since this series connects to the author's previous Cold River Ranch series via the Colorado setting and some crossover characters, I will go as far as to say that after one of my all-time favorites, A True Cowboy Christmas (Cold River Ranch book 1,) this is a very close second.
A somewhat rigid and proper school librarian matches wits with the charming, easygoing cowboy. I loved that this wasn't a Cinderella-type romance where Harriet got a makeover that magically changed her appearance before Jensen noticed her as attractive or as a romantic possibility. She was a great heroine who was pragmatic and had sound reasons for how she presented herself. Jensen was intrigued and then genuinely attracted to her because of her indifference to clothing, hairstyle, and some other eccentricities. Their romance was sweet and refreshing, as well as surprisingly sexy. There was also a mentor/student storyline that was the catalyst for Jensen and Harriet's relationship. That plotline, along with some heartbreaking events from Jensen's past, interwove themselves beautifully throughout the story, lending evocative moments to Harriet and Jensen's romance.
Overall, this is one of the best in the two connected series' with lovely characterizations, romance, and poignancy. Also, a quick note about the ending. I loved the way the author executed the epilogue. It laid out Jensen and Harriet's future in a satisfying and truly heartwarming way. I even cried a little.
My Thoughts - Story
When I saw Ms. Crews' name, I remembered reading her Cold River Ranch series and how I fell in love with her rendition of a manly cowboy!
This story of Jensen and Harriett had me cracking up in the first scene at the bar. These two couldn't be any more incompatible and it just added to the mystery of Jensen. In my opinion though...that rough, tough cowboy from the beginning did a complete turn around though when it came to helping Harriett. Who knew a gentleman was hiding under all that gruff exterior?
I love me a book about opposites attracting and how much better than opposite can Jensen, a player, and Harriett, a bookish virgin, get?
It came to attention when I was getting ready to read SUMMER NIGHTS WITH A COWBOY that I hadn't written my review for this book for some reason, so here goes.
ALL NIGHT LONG WITH A COWBOY was a great addition to the Kittredge Ranch Series, and if you enjoy the Opposites Attract trope you're going to love this one! Jensen Kittredge is what you may refer to as a playboy but he just loves to have fun and not be tied down to anyone, so if that makes him on so be it. But don't let that carefree attitude fool you because there is much more to him if you give yourself the time to really get to know him.
I loved Harriett from the moment she walked into the Coyote, a place no one would ever expect to see the buttoned up high school librarian. From the way she dressed and carried herself you would think she was much, much older than her actual years and I think that is what really had me liking her right away but then there was so much more we learned about her and I was as hooked as Jensen was.
The chemistry was great and it was really fun watching Jensen change his ways once he found his forever one.
If you enjoy Steamy Contemporary Western Romances, Cowboy Romances, Small Town Romances, or Opposites Attract I would recommend this book to you.
Happy Reading!!!
Jensen and Harriet’s story was a whirlwind of emotion! The semi-new town librarian and resident playboy’s first meet was definitely not starry eyes and a bed of roses. Instead, it was more chilly winds meet the heat at the equator, but they paired really well together. Jensen and Harriet both have issues to overcome, forgive, and let go, and their journey brought a layer to the story I wasn’t expecting but very much enjoyed.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley/St. Martin’s press. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I didn't know that I wanted to be on a cowboy romance kick, but here I am. All Night Long with a Cowboy was a delight and I adored the opposites attract romance between cowboy/smoke jumper, Jensen and high school librarian, Harriet. These two were perfect foils for each other. Harriet refuses to pretend to be anyone other than herself and Jensen hides himself with his clownish ways (after all this cowboy is hiding a deep and secret pain, that obviously romance will cure). The best part of this one, is the fact that Harriet didn't have to transform to get the guy. She makes small changes, but doesn't ditch the glasses and go get some makeup. It's rare that the "spinster" doesn't have to change to attain her love interest and I really just loved how the author kept Harriet herself.
Honestly, this was just a really fun read, and immediately had me seeking out Crew's other books, because I'm on a roll!
All Night Long with a Cowboy is the second story in the Kittredge Ranch series and it was an entertaining, fun story. When high school librarian Harriet Barnett asks, more like demands, Jensen Kittredge to help her with one of her delinquent summer school students, it forms the beginning of an unlikely friendship.
Jensen is the carefree playboy of Cold River and has no plans to settle down, carrying a guilt from when he was a teen. He’s intrigued by Harriet and slowly wants to uncover the sexy woman under that ill-fitting cardigan.
I loved the heroine Harriet and her odd ways and loved that she was very comfortable in her own skin. Harriet led an orderly life and was okay being the 5-cat lady. Her attraction to Jensen was something she didn’t understand but didn’t fight it. She was good for Jensen and she saw the man behind the mask he portrays to everyone in town and his own family. I liked that she took her job seriously and wanted to help the young man that just needed a little extra attention to change the course of his life. Her empathy really struck a chord with me.
The author has written a well-balanced opposites attract romance. She developed the characters and built their relationship, along with a cast of family and secondary characters to play off of. The characters were intriguing and the storyline kept my interest. Crews has become one of my favorite authors because her stories are captivating and entertaining. I’m a big fan of small town romances and All Night Long with a Cowboy is one worth checking out.
All Night Long with a Cowboy follows the story of Harriett and Jensen. Harriett is your stereotypical schoolmarm librarian. The complete and total opposite of Jensen. Jensen is the kind of guy that should send Harriett running for the hills. He is a notorious playboy, who could have any woman at the drop of a hat. These two shouldn’t even be on each other’s radar’s. But, fate has other plans. When a troubled student challenges Harriett, she has no choice but to try and reach them and bring in the one person she thinks can help. But, when it comes to Jensen, he is a lot more than what Harriett bargained for…
I thought this book was an ok read. I could tell right away that Harriett was going to have her hands full with a guy like Jensen. These two couldn’t be more opposite if they tried, but somehow found themselves drawn to one another. I do think their story had a bit of a slow start, but I was intrigued enough to see where their story would go.
The road to happily ever after for Harriett and Jensen wasn’t without some bumps along the way. Both of them had pasts that they felt defined them and needed to overcome the hurdles of their past. There was definitely more to these characters than meets the eye and I enjoyed getting to know the two of them.
--- I was invited to view this ARC through NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it ---
“All Night Long with a Cowboy”, by Caitlin Crews (St. Martin’s Press), is a very enjoyable story, featuring an unlikely romantic couple with the most torrid chemistry after a slow burn beginning.
The opposites attract trope is developed well and the author does a great job emphasizing Jensen and Harriet’s differences and the sparks between them despite the contrast.
Both are great characters, although none of them that relatable. The tortured hero hiding the pain behind a façade of laid-back charm is very well done and gives the male character an aura of mystery that plays well with all that apparent nonchalance. When we realize the extent of the loneliness and the feelings of guilt and self-punishment, Jensen gains more substance.
I found the heroine hard to relate to because of some odd personality traits, but that doesn’t mean the character isn’t interesting. Perhaps the trope of the introverted (but not shy!) librarian is given new dimensions; she’s a mixture of intelligence and analytical wisdom and social ineptitude.
The awakening of Harriet’s sensuality/sexuality was cute to watch. In the beginning I was a bit annoyed with Jensen’s indulgence towards Harriet calling her “his odd little duck” or “an adorable little wet hen of a woman”.
The references about Jensen’s drawl, laziness or lounging seemed often redundant.
The secondary characters are well flashed out. Matias, Jensen’s best friend, is a promising character and I hope he will have his own story. The same for Aidan, a sweet, troubled teenager.
I LOVED HARRIET, she is the kind of quirky heroine I like, she is unapologetically herself, hella stubborn, and does not squirm or fumble when speaking to the attractive MMC.
The hero is good, a little over the playboy MMC trope, but I liked their banter. Honestly though the heroine is a gem and so the book is 5 stars.
It is safe I believe, the hero does flirt with a few women in the beginning but I don't believe he goes any further.
Harriett is a high school librarian running a program to help kids who are struggling in school and in life. Jenson is the town clown, now helping to run the family farm after his father's heart attack. Harriett needs Jenson's help getting through to one of her students. Together they'll learn more about themselves than they thought possible.
Loved it! A great quick read. Well written with characters that really pull you in. Reading this story was like being a fly on the wall in someone's life.
Three and a half stars.
Jensen Kittredge, second son, part-time fire-jumper and full-time Casanova and fun-time guy. Jensen doesn't do relationships, he doesn't do serious and he never lets anyone see the real him. What no-one realises is that this is self-imposed penance for something that happened when he was eighteen years old.
Harriet Barnett moved to Cold River three years ago. She knows everyone else thinks she's a bit odd, cat-lady, librarian, old-lady dress sense, she just doesn't care very much, she's happy with her books and her knitting and her cats. But when one of her group of Summer School delinquents sneers at her attempts to bring in inspirational speakers to motivate them to do better, and suggests the only person worth listening to is Jensen Kittredge, Harriet is determined to get Jensen to speak to them. Even if it means confronting him in the den of iniquity bar he frequents on a Saturday night.
Jensen can't believe it when his night of whisky and loose women is interrupted by a diminutive woman, dressed like an old maid, clasping her giant handbag like a comfort blanket. She doesn't seem to be put off by any of his tried and trusted stratagems for shaking off women and his overt sexual innuendos seem to bounce off her.
This is a classic opposites attract romance, the bad boy and the librarian, the Casanova and the virgin. I really enjoyed it, but it didn't have the emotional heft for me of the first book - although so many other readers didn't like that book. Also, Cold River seems to be populated by men who are all atoning for some deep dark secret from their pasts - must be a dreadful place to grow up, LOL.
I am really holding out for Jensen's brother Zack's story, the buttoned-up oldest son who is the only male member of the family ever to get a job away from the Kittredge Ranch.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest opinion.
Bumped for release.
I always enjoy stories centered around the Kittredge family. Ms. Crews outdid herself with this one. I loved the matchup between the rigid and buttoned up librarian and the town playboy. From the exterior, Jensen and Harriet appear to be the most unlikely couple. Yet, as you dig deeper, they are the perfect compliment for one another. There is so much that you don't know about Jensen initially. However, once his backstory is revealed, it shines the light on why he behaves the way he does. With that information, I totally swooned over him. He's quite the standup man.
Harriet was a wonderful character as well. I enjoyed seeing her evolution from the "typical" librarian to a more modern and less uptight version. Gaining a better understanding of how she viewed herself as "different" and therefore gave everyone the "different" person she thought they expected. Her perceptions were a bit misguided and seeing her realization and how she changed things was quite rewarding. Once she understood that she could be unique and different without having to look like she was twenty years older and way too reserved, she was free to be herself without presenting a "fake persona."
Overall, I always like to see the family interactions. In this book, we were able to also see Jensen and Harriet connect with the local juvenile "delinquent, Aiden Hall. Aiden was misunderstood and needed someone to take an interest in guiding him. When Harriet and Jensen do so, he thrives.
All Night Long with a Cowboy was a perfect addition to the Kittredge ranch series. I look forward to reading more as they become available. I love everything about the setting and the characters that this author has created.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
Having read book 1 in the Kittrege Ranch series, I welcomed reading "All Night Long with a Cowboy" by Caitlin Crews. I thought this was just a thoroughly enjoyable read for me and once started, I did not put down until finish. I love the fact that Harriet is mistaken to be the stereotypical librarian by Jensen, but however who is very intelligent and determined to get her way when she is on a mission. On the other hand, there is Jensen who for all pretense puts up a good facade of being that good ole rough and tough cowboy but underneath has a heart of gold but doesn't want anyone to know this.
When intelligence meets strength, the boiling pot explodes with two individuals set in their ways and out to get what they want. You have old family generation pitting against what his family looks upon as "new" in the town of Cold River. I loved both the main characters and the banter between the two. The building relationship to love for both of them was nice. As with all my readings, I do like a moderate bit of steamy and it was included in this story. A well-written and lovely story that I recommend the read.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for this ARC for my fair and honest review. All opinions in this review are my own.
I’m always here for a cowboy story in a small town and I loved this synopsis.
I really enjoyed Harriett and Jensen. They seem so different, but they’re more alike than they realize. She’s straight laced and he’s laid back and the button pushing was some of the best. There’s a good amount of characters here and I liked all of them.
Plot wise, it was good. There’s a slow build to a mildly angsty scene with a quick resolution. I liked the honest conversations and the sweet talk and the flirting. Yes, I would have liked to see a little more growth of the relationship (her ILY felt crazy early to me), but the epilogue made it easy to overlook.
Overall, this was a great start of a series for me and I’m definitely going to go back and read book one.
**Huge thanks to the publisher for providing the arc free of charge**
All Night Long with a Cowboy is the second novel in Caitlin Crews' Kittredge Ranch series, and long story short, I absolutely loved the main characters, their quirkiness, and their downright opposites attract chemistry, it had me laughing one minute and in tears the next--all in all, it was a 5-star read.
Harriet is newbie in this small Colorado town, having only been the high school librarian for a mere 3 years, not unlike my adopted home town in Vermont, where you're considered a flatlander unless and until your family has been here for at least 3 generations. Harriet is a square peg in a round hole--as odd as odd can be. She's from the midwest, straitlaced, smart, outspoken, still a virgin at age 30, only 5 feet tall, dressing in old-fashioned, baggy clothes, her hair always in a bun--the archetype of every school librarian I remember from my school days. But her oddness doesn't bother her much, she's content with her life, her cats, her choices and her job--which, now that summer has arrived in Colorado, includes dealing with some recalcitrant, probationary, and unwilling teenagers in summer school, one of whom, Aidan Hall, comes from a troubled, abusive home on the wrong side of the tracks, and who is someone she sincerely wants to help.
Harriet approaches handsome, hunky, womanizer, Jensen Kittredge, head-on, at the sleaziest bar in town one night, as he's surrounded by a bevy of beautiful, willing, and scantily dressed women, all wanting a piece of him. His attitude is dismissive, especially when she asks him to come to her class and give a talk about ranching to her students, as a successful cowboy role model. He doesn't take her seriously at first, but slowly and surely, she eventually gets him to agree. And after Aidan is caught vandalizing the local parish hall, instead of community service, she convinces the sheriff (Jensen's brother) and Jensen, to take Aidan on, have him working on the ranch and hopefully learning from the experience.
All of the aforementioned lead to a growing familiarity between Harriet and Jensen, and eventually lead to Harriet's bedroom, the last place anyone in town would imagine these two diametrically different characters would ever end up, but this is a romance novel after all, but Ms. Crews never shies away from creating characters who are not only fully fleshed out, but who have more depth, more pain, and more issues, than anyone would at first suspect, and that's especially true of Jensen, whose love 'em and leave 'em, joking and laughing, dumb jock persona is all he lets the townspeople see, but if there is one thing true of Harriet, it's that there is nothing superficial or false about her or her personality, and there is far more depth to both of these characters than you would ever suspect at the outset--and that depth, and their secrets, are what made this novel such an interesting, thought-provoking, and emotionally moving read. It's a gem of a novel, and I'm happy to recommend it.
I voluntarily read and advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.
ARC received via Netgalley for an honest review
What happens when the quirky librarian knocks the town playboy on his ar$3?
That's what we get when Harriet meets Jensen.
I like Harriet. I like that she walks to the beat of her own drummer. I like that she doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks of her, and adore that she sticks up for those who have no one to stick up for them.
From the beginning I knew that there was more than the player persona to Jensen, but boy did it take some work to drag it all out of him.
And I freaking LOVE that they drag each other out of their self imposed ... pigeon hole I guess you would call it.
And when they take on all the small town gossip as a team.
I enjoyed this story, and look forward to more of the Kittredge Ranch series in the future.
Cowboy Bodice Ripper. This is one of those slow burn (ish) cowboy romances where you've got the busty-and-beautiful-but-no-one-knows-it-because-she-hides-it-all-the-time librarian meeting up with the playboy-that-can't-escape-his-dark-past cowboy. The slow burn and banter through the front half of the book is great, helped along via a subplot involving a troubled teenager. And then you get to the (nearly requisite in the genre) sex around the 2/3 mark where suddenly both of our leads are very well endowed for their genders. Sure, why not. A bit typical, and a bit of a letdown because of it, but eh, when being typical in one particular area is the worst you can say of a book... it really isn't a bad book. Fans of the genre will like it, those that aren't fans of the genre won't have any real reason to come to the genre via this particular book. For the clean/ sweet crowd, well, I already told you it has a sex scene, and there's references to several others, both "onscreen" and off. Solid tale mostly solidly told, and it does in fact work as an entry point into the series despite being Book 2. Very much recommended.
All Night Long With a Cowboy is the second title in the Kittredge Ranch series. This was my first time reading Caitlin Crews work, and I felt that you could easily read this title as a standalone. Harriett and Jensen’s story is an opposites attract, slow burn romance.
Harriett is a quirky, unique and straight-laced librarian. She’s passionate about her work and headstrong, and old fashioned.
Jensen is the son of a prominent ranching family, and hides his true personality and pain behind a playboy persona, and his antics cause many to underestimate his capabilities.
The beginning of this title was quite slow, and it took awhile for me to get into their story. It was one that I picked up and put down several times, as I struggled to stay focused on the plot, and it was kind of off-putting the way in which Jensen was continually full named.
Although not my favorite cowboy romance, I look forward to reading future works by Caitlin Crew.
This was really good! Ticked all my boxes for a great contemporary. The plot had stakes but wasn't too dramatic. Our character's backstories informed their presents without being excuses. It's part of a series but works as a true standalone.
I liked Harriet was self-possessed without being "not like the other girls". Like there's a line or two about the hero's various conquests with "floozies" at the town's bar of ill repute. But that's morseo about how the hero views the women he used to be involved with. I don't think it's upholding Harriet as a virtuous woman. Perhaps I'm reading too deep into this.
Points for having a really good librarian hero! Harriet mentions getting her MLIS (that's the dream, man) and she has a couple of rants about the importance of school library work. I really liked how she mentions the weird space between being not quite a public librarian and not quite a teacher. That's a really relatable feeling.
