i am a simple girl, i see "ex boyfriend's dad" trope and it's an automatic read for me

this one was very fun. the hero in this is the owner of a sex club where people are free to safely explore all their kinks and desires. And he's also the heroine's ex boyfriend's father. one day she has to go to his house to collect a security deposit from him and since they have never met before he mistakes her for his new "secretary" and commands her to kneel. She is very confused at first but finds herself intrigued...

I really enjoyed this and it mixed up a bunch of tropes I love
- ex's dad
- age gap (21h, 40+ H)
- boss/employee
- dom/sub
- forbidden

2 things i don’t have: a praise kink and rock bottom self esteem

which made it kinda hard to root for the relationship here. i mean sure, you go girl, sticking it to you ex by fucking his dad. but if i want a good secretary story i’ll just watch the movie, Secretary. this was fun adjacent but if you’re not into the kinks in these books i think it makes it really challenging to connect with the story since about 60% of them is raw intercourse lmao.

I am not going to humiliate this book... but I am also not going to....PRAISE IT.

Was it spicy? Yes, sure. Some of these scenes were very original, SUPER creative, and very sensual.

Sara's writing was also consistent, with a really easy flow, it was a surprinsingly quick read!

Was it the spiciest book I've read? No. You guys made it sound like this was off the charts, it wasn't. It gave me insane 50 Shades of Grey flashbacks. The rooms, the contracts, the Yes, Sir.

The reality is: I am way too much of a brat for this book.

Things that annoyed me: the co-dependency, the female main character (plain and boring), the overall development of their relationship, the beginning was too rushed, and the insta-love wasn't for me. I like when things are slower, I like the edging, the longing a little bit more but I can't deny; this book was well written.

I just feel like I personally do not enjoy praise this way and this dynamic of relationship.

I like my female main characters more aggressive and combative, and for the male main characters to be a little more brutal as well. Just personal taste.

As for the ex's dad, this was trying a little too hard to be the next Birthday Girl (one of my favorite books of all times) and the best thing about Birthday Girl is how emotional it is + the torturous wait. Nothing about this one was torturous, her timing was a little off and half of the time I only remembered he was her ex's dad because he would mention it, so the relationships weren't developed very well. Things were rushed.

Things I did enjoy: her writing, the creativity of her scenes and her dirty talk and sex scenes weren't cringy at all, so points for that! Some moments were very memorable. I also enjoyed how she approached this specific kink in a very educational way.

So yeah, not bad, not amazing, but I am not going to sit here and say this is not a great spicy book to read when you are in the mood for a quick read to get your

tingling.

This is not the sort of book you read to analyze...Will I recommend this to other people? Yeah, absolutely, if you are into the 50 shades of grey scenario and you are not going to laugh like a maniac like I did for the first half, because it was a little silly.. But I had a great time. I am actually impressed with how well it was written, a little slow, the dynamic wasn't for me, and I am not into praise.

Surprise, surprise... I am a degradation girl and I want to be handled like cargo in a meat market. We all love different things and it's ok lol However, this is an awesome read if you want something quick, easy, fun and sexy to get yourself going. So have at it!

well... this was something! something terrible.

(i don’t plan on writing a long and detailed review for this book so i’ll be quick and sort of messy here).

what’s to like about this book? mm let me think... NOTHING. everything was horrible.

↳ the plot? weak. non-existent. one of the worst i’ve ever read.
↳ the writing? terribly bad. for a second i thought i was reading a 2013 wattpad fanfic. to be honest, i’ve read fanfics that were better than whatever this is so nevermind.
↳ the main characters? insufferable, annoying, quite forgettable and bland. Emerson & Charlotte have no depth whatsoever.
↳ the romance (if we can call it that)? tediooooous. *yawn* these two have zero chemistry and their whole dynamic felt forced to me.
↳ the smut? oh my freaking god... just awful. i lost count of how many times i cringed reading those spicy scenes. yikes. it made me remember why i stopped reading smutty books.

actually, i wasn’t even going to read this book since i literally had zero interest in it. i was only interested to read the third book and i was going to skip straight to that one — but my friend giu suggested for me to read it in order and she said it would be awful, but also kind of entertaining, so i trusted her. turns out she was right! this was entertaining at times. the only saving grace. that explains my 1.25 rating.

i didn’t have any expectations for Praise honestly, so i can’t say i’m disappointed. the only thing i was expecting from it was a trashy story and that’s exactly what it delivered. i needed something like this to help with my reading slump and i guess i can say it helped a bit.

do i recommend it? not really... but if this is the type of book you like (it's definitely not mine) then yes. go for it.

Walmart version of Birthday Girl by PD

the hero kept telling the heroine at the beginning of the book that they couldn't fuck around because she's his son's ex-girlfriend and there's a 19 year difference between them. Does that stop the heroine? Absolutely not

She researches dom/sub relationships and decides "I wanna do that 👍" basically my logic after I read 50SOG one fucking time back in 2015💀

The heroine waits for the hero to come home and when he walks into the room...he FINDS HER ON HER KNEES-
“What…are you doing?” he asks.
I expected this question, so I’m prepared.
“Being a good girl,” I reply, “Sir.”

good gir- GOOD GIRL?! HOW ABOUT NO

I proceeded to set my phone down and SCREAM into my pillow whilst contemplating my sanity

THIS BOOK WAS SO FREAKING GOOD!!!! From the moment Charlie and Emerson meet, I was so obsessed with their dynamic. Emerson owns a club and isn't shy about his specific preferences. He mistakes Charlie for a new sub for his office, but she's really his son's ex girlfriend coming to collect a check. He decides to hire Charlie, though, as his secretary and nothing more. Charlie can't forget their encounter, though, and finds herself asking to explore that part of her sexuality with him. While the romance was SO GOOD and I loved how fast and hard Emerson fell for Charlie, I also really loved the side plots going on. I loved Emerson's journey towards mending his relationship with his son and I especially loved Charlie's relationship with her mom and sister. I just loved everything about this book. Charlie had a safe place to experiment with what she enjoyed and Emerson made sure that she was consenting to everything. And I loved the age gap! I literally loved everything about this book. I can't wait to read book 2 and more from Sara Cate!

Listen.
I wasn't expecting an insane and unnecessary amount of depth from a book that's called PRAISE and has a sexy almost shirtless man on the cover.

I knew what I was getting into when I picked this one up and it definitely wasn't a serious book that could turn my life upside down.
I purposely picked it up because I wanted to read something steamy, funny and possibly filled with all the sin you can fit into a book.
I gave it a chance (and I was also a little cover-baited because come on??? so handsome????) for what its premise promised, because I love my smutty books like the next person, and I was in the mood for some good old stomac-dropping lines and situations, and I've also seen people compare Praise to the daddy kink bible that is Birthday Girl, and while BG isn't my favorite book by a long shot, I read it and even almost appreciated it, because in it, I got exactly what I asked for and then some.
Hence, me blindly jumping into this book like Tom Hardy was waiting for me inside the pages.

Oh, how disappointed I was.

The writing was okay, I guess, but I hated the insta-something that was shoved down my throat right from the beginning.
I haven't read much, but there was something about the story that felt so superficial even for someone who, like me, was here for anything but the plot.
I also felt really disconnected from both Emerson and Charly. Their interactions made me cringe so much and both characters were so stupid, I considered throwing my kindle out the window at some point, but then I thought I'd be directing my frustration at the wrong target.
I hated how immature Emerson was. I haterd how, because of it, I couldn't feed a daddy kink because...well, there was no daddy to munch on to begin with, because the one we were given was too busy behaving like a teen.
And I swear it's not an age thing.
Like our lord and savior Pedro Pascal once said, in fact, Daddy is a state of mind.

5 ⭐️ PRAISE KINK UNLOCKED 🥵

"Was I a good girl?" she whispers.
A smile creeps across my face as I gather her into my arms.
"You're always a good girl."

I’m SHOCKED by my own rating, but I loved it! I loved it so much that I not only bought the Kindle version, even though I have Kindle Unlimited, but also a physical copy. So when I tell you I loved it, believe me, I LOVED IT!

Summary:

Charlotte, aka Charlie (21), goes to the house of her ex-boyfriend's dad, Emerson (40), to pick up half of the security deposit from their previous apartment. However, Emerson mistakes her for one of his hired submissives and tells her to wait for him on her knees in his office. Charlie is extremely confused but really needs the money, so she complies. But the truth is quickly revealed, and in an effort to find a way back into his estranged son's life, Emerson offers Charlie a job as his assistant - a real assistant. Emerson, a dominant and owner of a members-only sex club, is desperate for help before the opening. It was meant to be a strict working relationship, but the more time Charlie and Emerson spend together, the temptation becomes too much to resist.

My Thoughts:

I thought this would be another mindless porn with no plot story, but I was wrong. I loved the premise, the forbidden romance (ex-boyfriend's dad/age gap), the sex-positivity, Charlie’s journey to gain her confidence back, Charlie’s relationship with Sophie, Emerson 💕, the spice (HOLY SH*T), and the drama with Charlie’s dad and Emerson's son.

I’m also not very familiar with kink-heavy stories, but I thought this was pretty tame from what I’ve heard from others. So this is a good intro to the world of kinks. And I liked that while the story is centered around a forbidden romance, kinks, and a sex club, it wasn’t the entire focus. There's a lot of depth to these characters and I found myself getting emotional a couple of times.

Overall, Praise is a quick, easy read with some fluff, spice, and heart. This is one of the best stories I've read this year, and I 100% recommend checking it out!

I mean, it’s a yes from me. Everything about this was a yes for me. The praise it has been receiving is well earned and so worth it.

“I see Charlotte in a form she was always meant to be—confident, sexual, and happy.”

It hit all the marks it needed to hit for a damn good romance. So fuckin’ enjoyable and I could not put this down. I didn't want to. It consumed my mind in the best possible way.

“You think because I’m the Dominant that I can’t take care of you?”
“Sort of,” I reply with a shrug.
“But you’re mine to take care of, Charlotte.”

Whilst this revolved around setting up a sex-club, an environment where people feel safe enough to explore their kinks, there was so much emotion and character exploration present and my heart latched on to Charlie and Emerson. Things got intense between them and I lived for that intensity. It gave such a strong characterisation which made for even better sex scenes. More intimate and loving.

And more importantly, I’ve found something that I love as much as Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas. 😭

I’m in swoon-city right now. And I'm pretty sure that I’m in love with Sara Cate.

Praise is complete and utter perfection. It’s pretty much everything I love in the loveliest package.

The boyfriend/son is a real winner. I’m glad we got past the break up portion before this even started. A shame Emerson can’t let him go too.

I love misunderstandings when they end with someone on their knees. 😉🤣

Curiosity killed the cat … but satisfaction brought it back!

I swear to god, Beau is the biggest cock blocker!

I didn’t realize this one would make me cry … dammit. 🥺

Oh Emerson … I know he’s your son but damn!

Garrett is smart. Listen to Garrett. Be more like Garrett. (Also looking forward to his book, I love voyeurism!)

I really liked that the mom is so chill, you don’t see that very often when there’s a much older man.

The best thing about this is the relationship building. Not just the obvious lovers but from Charlie and Beau to Beau and Emerson to Charlie and Sophie. I especially loved the sisters, they’re so sweet together. And when Emerson immerses himself in that family it made it even better.

I can’t believe it took me this long to read this author. Her books have been on my tbr for ages. But now I get to look forward to each and every one.

The writing was on point, the plot and the characters were great (for this kind of book), the love interest made me feral, I might've meowed a couple times, my legs divorced, in terms of feminism we have none, tears were shed but not from my eyes, my throat requires stitches, my dignity is on the floor, my standards are in heaven, my independence in hell, and I need therapy. I am NOT sorry. This was amazing😭

"The forbidden fruit always tastes sweetest."

Emerson Grant.
Part owner of the Salcious Players' Club.
And Charlie Underwood's new boss.
Another little fact - he is the father of Charlie's ex-boyfriend.
Emerson offers Charlie a job.
Purely platonic.
But knowing Emerson's background, Charlie is more than intrigued.
And while Emerson knows this is wrong…
He can't stop himself from wanting Charlie.
No matter how much he tries.

"Does she even know what she's doing to me?"

I remember reading this for the first time and absolutely falling in love with Emerson and Charlie and I am so happy that rereading it I feel more and more in love. This series sucked me in the first time around and it is doing the exact same thing another time around. And I mean Sara Cate can write smut like it's nobody's business and add into that ex-boyfriends dad??? AKA THE silver fox Emerson Grant? Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm yours people!! 🖤

"I need to watch myself around this girl. She's too perfect to ignore and too forbidden to be mine."

That was....interesting.

I can’t believe that once upon a time I kept delaying reading birthday girl (which is still my favorite book in this trope) because I though that a girl falling in love with her boyfriend’s father is such a weird complicated situation to be in.

Now look at me chasing the trope.

ooof, okay this one is gonna be hard to talk about, but i was in love with the first half of this, and it really felt extra amazing because i went into it not expecting much. but i was so intrigued, and i thought everything was set up so smartly, and the writing was great, and the main character's love and protectiveness for her sister meant so much to me (i actually shed a couple tears, truly)! but basically, once the characters started getting together, the book just took a nosedive - which feels bad always but it feels extra bad when reading romance. and emerson became the most obtuse character in existence. like, my dude, what was your end game plans the whole first half of the book? and then things just kept coming and kept not feeling good and... here we are, with a two star rating.

i really hated the scene at the club with eden, and like... she was my favorite character and i still will happily read a book all about her

tw/cw: very brief scene with blackmail, transphobic parent, a harry potter reference, parental abandonment, anxiety depiction and mention, mention of cheating in the past, and an abusive parent.

“You are such a good girl"

How about A BIG HELL NO???

this book started with a very slow pace and ended in a bit rush. although this book was very well written and some of the scenes were good even yet i found some of the scenes very cringe and unexciting. the characters were so bland with no sparks and legit no chemistry at all and some of the sex scenes were just plain boring. i just liked how Sara portrayed a kink throughout the book.

The FMC Charlotte was so embarrassing and annoying fr. she was shown so desperate and needy and honestly i felt second hand embarrassment because of her lmfaoo💀

The MMC Emerson Grant was all sexy and perfect. but sometimes he just came out plain boring and maddening ; although he was the only character i found bearable in this book.

And let's not ignore the fact that it gave me a huge reading slump ; honestly i had to force myself to complete this book 😭

this book was just a combination of 50SOG and birthday girl by PD. all of this contract shit, exploring and being curious in dom/sub scenario just gave peak 50SOG vibes and as he was her ex's dad and the way they just kept denying their (nonexistent) sexual tension it kinda gave birthday girl vibes. overall i found it typically boring and monotonous!!!🥹

This was fun. This was ridiculous. The plot is just 3 lawsuits in a trench coat. Everyone involved is unbelievably stupid. I ate it up.

Holy crap this book was amazing. It you were to take Penelope’s Douglas’ Birthday Girl and mix it with Katee Robert’s Your Dad Will Do and sprinkle in a s*x club and sub/dom relationship, you get Praise.

This is a story about Charlotte. She finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her, moves out and tries to start over. When her ex tells her their security deposit, for their old place, is at his dad’s house, she heads over there to go get it. Unbeknownst to her, his father is an owner of a s*x club and a dom who gets off on praising a submissive.

When she comes in to his office, he mistakes her for his new sub and the tension builds. Once he realized his mistake he is apologetic and ends up offering a secretary job for her - but only a secretary - but can they stop the tension brewing between them!!??

UMMMM this book is hot. and I mean like scorching. This book has everything, praise, voyeurism, exhibitionism, kink, jealousy, tension, push and pull, forbidden, and a whole lot of love.

I am OBSESSED with Emerson. Like need him in my life immediately. I loved getting to see him fall for Charlotte all while knowing he can’t have her, because she’s his son’s ex.

Sara’s writing was quite enjoyable and I’m excited to read more from her backlist!

Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Highly recommended!!!

I swear, I’m always looking for the next ‘Birthday Girl’ and when I saw all the hype around this book I thought I’d check it out. This was my first Sara Cate book and I’d definitely read her again! I didn’t love this as much as BG, but I doubt I’ll ever find one as perfect as that LOL. I did enjoy Emerson and Charlie’s age gap romance and it reminded me a bit of some of the club books I used to read a decade ago.

"You mean, will people think it’s wrong? That sounds like a them problem."
I have a tendency to stay away from hype trains because they're usually not for me. But when you have a trusted friend who tells you you're going to love a book, you get it. Or at least I do.
And even though I never had a praise kink, nor did I get one from this book, I did get an Emerson kink.

"He’s just soft enough to be cozy and strong enough to be chiseled. I seriously don’t think a man’s arms have ever been so inviting."
Emerson was absolutely perfect. He's strong, protective, and alpha, but he was also caring. He has a degradation kink and so he really thought he would never find anyone who would understand that, and he doesn't want to settle and not be himself. Plus, that kink has cost him his relationship with his (very closed-minded) son.

"And you are more than enough. You are perfect."
I didn't think I would like Charlotte because she's only 21, and heroines that age can be written as immature. She's not. She knows what she wants, and she goes after it. Yes, she hesitates, she questions herself, but don't we all? She is also kind of insecure, but I can forgive her for it due to her past. And she is definitely brave.

"No one can see you here, Charlotte. Doesn’t it feel liberating? To know you can do anything you want."
Charlotte breaks up with her boyfriend and needs her half of the deposit on the house back. He tells her to take it up with his dad, so she does. Looking to reconnect with his son, Emerson thinks Charlotte may be the way to do it, so he offers her a job as a secretary for the Salacious Players' Club. Yes, it's a sex club, and he's about to get a lot more than he bargained for from his little offer. It's clear to see she's not just another girl to him - and boy, does he fall hard!

"His lips are merciless and demanding, devouring my mouth and barely leaving me without enough air to breathe. Oh well, I don’t need to breathe. I just need him."
There's a lot of hot sex in this book, and I loved all of it. However, my favorite thing was the tension of Emerson and Charlotte's relationship and how it progresses. They know they shouldn't, they know feelings are going to get hurt in the process, but they can't help themselves. The father-son relationship was well handled and provided just the right amount of angst, as did Charlotte's own relationship with her father.
Bonus points for Charlotte's sister, Sophie. I absolutely adored her!

"You’re mine," he growls against the skin of my neck, and I lift my bound arms and wrap them around his head. "Forget everyone before me, Charlotte. Just focus on me."
Also, I loved the club backdrop. It was perfect, and also the perfect metaphor. A place where you can get rid of your inhibitions and be yourself, any way you want. No judging. Emerson gives Charlotte that chance, and she takes it head on. It's not that she changes from who she used to be, but that she grows into the woman she was always meant to be. And he's the force behind that growth.

Interestingly enough, she's 21 and he's 40, but I didn't mind the age gap one bit. I actually only ever remembered it when it was mentioned, because it really didn't matter to me.

"Watching her, I realize…I love her. If this isn’t what love feels like, then it must not exist."
There was so much feeling in this book. I honestly wasn't expecting it. It's heart wrenching to see how some people's close-minded attitude can affect, and hurt, everyone around them. I loved how Emerson built Charlotte up, helping her realize that she is perfect in everything she is and does, in every way, and that she's so much more than what other people think.

"And while there are a hundred things to say, there is also nothing left to say, no words that will make this situation make sense beyond I want you, I need you, I love you. And that’s all that matters to me."
In the end, what really matters is being with the person you're meant to be with. And that's always someone who takes you for what and who you really are. In this case, someone who fully embraces it, and welcomes it. That’s love.
Loved this book, and I think I'm going to love Garrett's book even more.

Unlike Charlotte, I do not have daddy issues.
But I get her, I also want a 40 year old green-eyed millionaire to call me a good girl and spoil me😇

Not for me

The writing style and the characters were just not it for me.

The FMC was extremely annoying and acted like a child.

The MMC had no depth.

The smut was lackluster.

And, most of all, the way it was written was just poor. It took me weeks to read this because I didn't want to punish myself too much in one day.

*Thank you to Wildfire Marketing & the author for an ARC of this title.*

I had the BEST time reading this romance from Sara Cate. I have loved a few other books by this author as well, but this was so much fun. It was sweet and spicy and quite a bit naughty. It's the first in a new series about the Salacious Player's Club. A place where all your desires can come true.

Charlie (21) goes to see her ex-boyfriend's Father, Emerson (40), to get her security deposit from their previous apartment. She really needs the money back and when she enters his home, she is told to wait for him on her knees. She is too stunned to say no, only to realize that Emerson thought she was his new Service Sub coming to entertain him for the day. Oops!

Emerson is a partner in the new Club and he is a Dominate who has spent years working on this business with his friends. He is saddened by the estrangement from his son and when he discovers he has his son's ex girlfriend on her knees in his home, he is horrified. And chagrined that she looks so good there. What is even crazier is that he offers her a job to see if it will get him closer to is son, but that also puts temptation in his constant presence.

This romance was so enticing to me. It had k!nky elements that I love so much, but it wasn't really a dark romance. It was steamy and full of temptation and quite a bit of angst, but it didn't have any triggers for me and it was just a good old age gap with a girl learning her desires.

The conflict is pretty obvious, based on the summary and though I was super annoyed with Beau (afore-mentioned son and ex), but he actually had a pretty good character arc and I have a feeling we will him again. This is going to be a series of 4 books centered around the different club owners and I am very excited for them all.

This also had some great exploration of BDSM for newbies and submission in general was the main kink. Emerson doesn't like to elicit pain, just light degradation and obedience and obviously LOTS of Praise, which is just what Charlie needs in her life. She blossoms under it.

I highly recommend and I can't wait for the next one.

When a misunderstanding lands Charlotte on her knees in the center of Emerson’s office, things take an unexpected detour and heat up pretty quickly.

Charlie has been sleepwalking through life working as a cashier at the roller rink. When Emerson offers her a job as his secretary at Salacious Players Club, she knows it's an opportunity she can't pass up.

Despite the myriad obstacles, including their unconventional meeting and age gap, the unlikely duo find themselves on a journey of self-discovery.

The range of emotions was much more intense than I expected. Honestly, I thought I was getting a smutty read with a bit of plot, but this story was so much more than that. Don't get me wrong, the smexy times were H-O-T-T hot, but it was a beautiful love story too!!
