Spencer
Whose brilliant idea was it to build university housing next to one of Franklin U’s most notorious party frats?

I’m a real student—the kind who actually came to college to learn, not some dumb frat bro who sees Franklin U as a four-year challenge to consume the most booze and throw out the best pick-up line.
Their all-hours lifestyle is driving me crazy. Not to mention, the jerks keep taking my assigned parking spot.

But the worst offender might be Cory Ingram. Sure, he has a smile that could melt a polar ice cap, but no way will I ever be one of his minions. I’m pretty sure I made that clear when I blew my top at him. So I have no idea why he’s suddenly everywhere around me, turning on the charm like I might actually fall for it.

Nope. Not gonna happen.

Cory
From the first day I set foot on Franklin U’s campus, everything has been golden. I have a ton of friends, endless parties to be the life of, and whoever I want in my bed on any given night. Sure, I’m a shameless party boy, but I’m not a jerk. Ask anyone. Seriously.

Even the crotchety old groundskeeper waves and smiles at me when I pass.

Then there’s Spencer Crow. I’ve never seen a guy’s face get so red over a parking spot. Even when I try to make it right, he proceeds to give me the tongue-lashing of a lifetime—which is about the moment I notice that, in addition to being irrationally irate, he’s also crazy hot.

My friends think I’ve finally met the one person I can’t seduce…

Bet you I can.

Neve Wilder

22 books1,852 followers
Neve Wilder lives in the southern U.S., where the summers are hot and the winters are...sometimes cold. She is a mom to three rambunctious weebeasts who have joined forces in a mission to carpet the family home with toys and small items that really suck to step on at six in the morning.

She reads promiscuously, across multiple genres, but her favorite stories always contain an element of romance. Incidentally, this is also what she likes to write. Slow-burners with delicious tension? Yes. Whiplash-inducing page-turners, also yes. Down and dirty scorchers? Yes. And every flavor in between.

Neve isn't keen on being limited to one type of story or a single genre. If you enjoy slow burns and musicians, the Rhythm of Love series might be up your alley.

You'll find high heat, crackling sexual tension, and a variety of angst levels in the new adult Extracurricular Activities series that begins with Want Me.

Like smart-ass antiheroes and super steamy thrill rides? Stay tuned for the upcoming Wages of Sin series, which begins with Bad Habits.

If you need a good cry, Center of Gravity is a standalone age-gap slow burn that examines grief, enduring love, and imperfect characters doing their best (or worst, as it were) in shitty situations.

Neve fervently believes David Bowie was the sexiest musician to ever live, and she's always game to nerd out on anything from music to writing.

And finally, she believes that love conquers all. Except the heat index in July. Nothing can conquer that bastard.

I had fun reading this one. Spencer and Cory remind me a bit of the MCs in Test Me novella by this author. They are similar types of characters and have a similar dynamics. It worked for me there and it worked for me here.

There was a point in the story when I thought I wouldn't enjoy this, because it involves an element I don't like and didn't expect. It did make me cringe at first, but I think it played out well in the end. The story feels a bit predictable at times because of the bet trope – we can guess what will happen and how it will be resolved. And yes, the resolution was quite cheesy, but it made sense here.

The story was overall really cute and more romantic than I expected from this author. I liked that. I liked the writing, witty dialogues, Cory's thoughtfulness and the fact that Spencer can't lie and admits everything. I liked Gina, Darby and Royer. I always appreciate female friends who are not annoying, and I also enjoyed a bit of a side plot with some side characters. And Ted. I loved Ted.

Unfortunately, this one really didn’t work for me all that well.

Both of the main characters were awfully annoying, rude, bland, mean and just plain unlikable. I didn’t care about them at all and they mostly got on my nerves.

Their relationship was also awkward, hostile, superficial, and once again, I didn’t like it.

The exhibitionism and voyeurism stuff was really weird and uncomfortable; Spencer’s peeping through windows while non-consensually (and without Cory’s knowledge) watching Cory jerk off or have sex with someone else had me cringing. And then when they started doing the “jerking off in the window” thing together like a kink? Still yikes.

But honestly, everything in this book was just far too sex- or lust-based in general. There was no depth to be found here whatsoever.

And if it couldn’t get any worse, the writing itself was genuinely boring. It was somehow simultaneously dragged out as well as hurried. With this I mean to say that the story just would not move along, but then suddenly, when something remotely interesting, sweet or romantic would happen, we’d just skip over it. It was odd and annoying.
Oh, and the writing also generally lacked feeling. It was flat, simple and detached.

The only interesting thing I was looking forward to here was the bet reveal and the subsequent grovelling, but not even that entertained me.
In the end, I obviously just wasn’t into this. And I’m disappointed by that.

I’ll admit that I have mixed feelings about this book. One minute I’d like it and other, more frequent minutes, I’d dislike it; my interest would always ebb and flow. I think my main issue for the longest time was that the story was just the same old song. Usually in these kinds of books, even if I’m not the biggest fan of the story, I can still find enjoyment in the back-and-forth between the lead characters, but I actually think the dialogue was the weakest part of this book, as I found it to be incredibly wooden and lacked the wit that I usually enjoy from this genre. I mean, we were really swimming in shallow waters here. Otherwise, the story has a classic “opposites attract” set-up but doesn’t really do anything particularly interesting or new with the concept. Yeah okay, so Spencer is super serious and likes to study, and Cory is the most popular party boy on campus. Like I’ve totally never seen that before (also the idea of someone being popular in college is funny to me). It doesn’t help that the reasoning behind their conflict was paper-thin at best, (Cory parks in Spencer’s parking space) and is incredibly one-sided for most of the book. Because of this flimsy reason, it made every one of their early interactions uncomfortable and full of tension for no good reason. Spencer is needlessly antagonistic and Cory is excessively pushy. Bad combo, in my opinion.

All things considered; that isn’t to say I didn’t have any enjoyment reading this book. Both characters actually ended up improving greatly, which is the main reason why I didn’t end up hating this as much as I thought I would. Oh, and I thought the epilogue was adorable and tied the story up in a nice little bow. It’s important to know this fact because it's coming from a guy who almost never likes epilogues! And while the story probably doesn’t take all that much brain power to… power through, I still did vaguely enjoy the concept, and there were several cute moments sprinkled throughout that I liked and it kept me interested enough to keep turning the page. It’s a tried and true, easy-breezy read! Besides, I do think there can be a lot of comfort in reading a book that is so completely predictable and never strays far from by-the-books story conventions (sorry if that sounds shady). I just wish the book felt a little less like it was following the “how-to-write-a-book-with-a-shirtless-man-on-the-cover guidebook,” and a little more natural in its storytelling. Oh well, I guess every form of refuge has its price.

Everything started with a hot guy stealing my parking spot.

Another tiring day of working and studying, another day of having to drive around to find a place to park because some rich kid doesn’t care about rules. When the offender finally shows his face, Spencer doesn’t care if he’s hot enough to have charmed half the college population. Cory Ingram’s smile is not going to save him this time.

When a stranger starts yelling at him, there are two things Cory Ingram doesn’t understand: why parking in the wrong place is now a capital offense and how the hell has he never seen this beautiful man before. There is something about Spencer that makes him want to make him shut up with his lips, imagining all that rage employed for way better purposes.

Cory Ingram, who is now for having anyone he wants, has just decided who is going to be his next prey.

Challenge is on.

If you know Neve Wilder, you know her romance stories are a bit closer to erotica-romance than average, so it didn’t bother me both heroes were ready to jump each other bones since the beginning and the lack of major deepness within the story.

I also didn’t mind the old ‘bet’ trope because Cory was attracted to Spencer since the beginning and I don’t have a doubt he would have conquist him without his friends teasing him he would not be able to. If you ask me, the only purpose of the bet was the groveling scene at the end, which I adored as much as it made me laugh.

Why do I find him more attractive every time I look at him? Do I have some sort of fetish for guys who dislike me? Some weird codependency issue that makes me want to win them over?

Spencer and Cory were both very easy to care about, with their own problems and struggles. I had a lot of fun reading this, even needed to fan myself a couple of times -I dare you to read Neve Wilder without blushing-, although I can see some people cringing at some unconventional hot scenes. The author likes to gamble, and I love her books for that.

I recommend you to read Bet You if you like your MM romances extra spicy, light and fun.

I grew out of the whole “I bet I can make X fall for me” trope about 23 years ago, and probably haven’t enjoyed a book/film with this set-up since my teenage years obsessing over movies like She’s All That, Cruel Intentions and 10 Things I Hate About You (all still f*cking awesome, I don’t even care). So, in all honestly, this book was immediately on shaky ground with me because of its premise, regardless of the fact it use to work a treat in my formative years.

I appreciated the throwback vibes Wilder was aiming for here, but something was missing in the execution or in the couple chemistry, that would have otherwise made this nerd x jock pairing more memorable than it ended up being.

I liked nerdy Spencer. I liked popular Cory. They liked each other… but I wanted much more than I got.

As a nerd-girl who attends pop culture cons all the time, I did enjoy the cosplay elements in this story a good deal, with Cory and friends using Spencer’s ideas to organise the be-all end-all of college themed parties/charity events. I liked how the jock characters embraced the nerdy characters interests and joined in with the cosplay excitement in a way that was inclusive and fun. And I particularly loved Cory’s “performance” at the end, which was a good start at winning back Spencer’s heart after the whole bet debacle.

Overall, not a bad read, but for me, probably my least fave experience of both Wilder’s books AND in the Franklin U multi-author world.

I wanted to start the year with a fantasy reread and instead ended up filling my Kindle with smutty ebooks 🥲 Lia, I wholeheartedly blame you for this!

Bet You is one of those books, and although it's a very short read (only 230 pages), I still liked it.

Plotwise it's a bit weak when you compare it to other college romances I have read, but the characters are likable (most of the time - Spencer, I'm looking at you), and there isn't too much unnecessary drama which is always a plus point.

I will probably have forgotten the whole plot in a few weeks, but all in all, it was an okay book to start the year with 😊

I'm not really a big fan of the cover, but I enjoyed the first book in the series, and this one sounds interesting too, so let's go 😎

Never in a million years thought I would ever give a Neve Wilder book 2 stars. I am so, so disappointed! She used to be a one click author but this story was lacking in so many ways. It was boring, I never really liked the mc’s, I never really understood why Spencer couldn’t like Cory and I even did not enjoy the steamy scenes which definitely used to be one of Neve’s trademarks.
It was all predictable, some moments I even considered them to be childish and also the voyeur thing? That didn’t work for me either.
There just wasn’t any depth in these characters, they were flat and so was the story. It felt rushed too, like there hadn’t been too much time spent on plotting and creating these characters. Everything was very superficial.

Maybe I’ve been reading mm romance for too long. Maybe I’m a little tired of the same, predictable formula’s some mm authors write these days. I don’t really know. Maybe it’s just me. Lots of readers seem to enjoy it.
All in all, this book did not work for me and I’m just very sorry it didn’t.

I kindly received an Advanced Copy from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest, unbiased opinion.

This was another fun read from the Franklin U series, but super-spicy thanks to Neve Wilder. Superficial sunshine rich-boy Cory with the big s3xual conquest rep, clashes with diligent grumpy nerd Spencer, which triggers a bet with Cory’s frat buddies about being able to get Spencer into bed. Yes, a well-used trope, but it worked in the context of enemies to lovers too. (Just realised, that’s quite a list of tropes right there!)

Anyway, as Cory has to work hard for the first time ever to make someone like him, he finds himself enjoying Spencer’s company. During the slow thaw of his grumpiness & his judgements of Cory, Spencer realises that there is more depth, sensitivity, and kindness to the superficial image that Cory has unfairly been labelled with. But he soon realises that the s3xual prowess ISN’T overestimated, and the sensually s3xy scenes between the two are panty-melting!

While it starts with a bet, and there’s a dramatic realisation that that’s where it began, I love the effort that Cory puts in to fix things, and the sincerity of the apology & remorse, which makes him a much more nuanced & emotionally intelligent MC than you usually see in college romances. And the HEA they get, with the huge romantic gestures from Cory, are both hilarious and swoonworthy.

Sexy, morally ambiguous, unserious fun. If you enjoyed Neve’s Extracirricular Activites series I think you’ll enjoy this.

PSA: This is the first book in this series that I’ve read because I’m only reading the authors I like (hehe 🤭), so I can confirm this can easily be read as a stand-alone.

2.75 eh.

first, it’s 2022 and it’s well past the time to move on from the bet premise in romance.

i was hoping this would be a fresh, novel take that would turn that pretty terrible 90s staple on its head but it sadly did not.

unfortunately there wasn’t much else here to push past that for me. it’s a couple hours worth of distraction, but not a story i’ll find myself revisiting.

⭐︎ 3.75 stars rounded up! ⭐︎

Overall, an enjoyable installment in this series.

Personally, I was expecting a bit more from this lovely author, especially heat wise. Where was my high heat? Why weren't these two getting it on from at least the halfway point? And getting hot and heavy every which way?

We only got one full sex scene between these two, and about two blow job scenes. I was like...huh? Why are so many more books these days lacking good sex? It truly is a mystery. I remember Want Me and how hot and sexy it was, and how they got it on many times, in many places. I mean, this book had these two masturbating while watching each other, but those didn't do much for me, unfortunately *shrug* I did like their actual sex scenes with each other, but again...we barely got any of those.

Where is that? Why was the high heat missing in this? I felt so bereft. I feel like some authors are letting go of hot and heavy sex in their books, and we barely get it nowadays and it is SO disappointing. This book could have been somewhat longer, and that all could have been taken up by at least several more hot and sexy sex scenes between Spencer and Cory, our two MC's.

Seriously makes me worried that some purity culture is getting to authors these days or...if not, I honestly don't know. Ghost writers, maybe? Who aren't as good as writing sex scenes, so they just...don't? I just...don't get it.

Now, was the romance good? For the most part, yes. I enjoyed these two together a lot of the time and while their "I love you" exchange didn't quite feel earned to me, I was feeling the feels between these two and got the sense they were very very into each other.

Maybe doing a little more before the whole "bet" thing comes out in the open would have not only made that revelation pack more of a punch, but it would have made the fallout even worse and harder for Spencer to forgive - but oh the payoff would have been so worth it.

What we got was sweet and cute and "aw" worthy, but I wasn't wowed, exactly, or feeling the passion of being in love I so wanted to feel between these two.

This was still enjoyable, and I still enjoyed both these characters together and apart.

I was just expecting a little more from this lovely author, who I know can do a lot better in certain areas (*cough*mainlythesex*cough*).

But still a good installment in this series and a fun, enjoyable read overall. Definitely a lower rated book for me from this author's works, but still solid on the whole.

Here's hoping for higher - and more frequent - heat next time🤞

Nothing about this story is working for me. I don't like either of the MCs nor do I feel any chemistry between them. For such a short story nothing seems to be happening and even with the voyeurism I'm still incredibly bored. How is that even possible?

The short of it: I thought this would be hotter.

Yes, it had a couple of hot scenes, but I expected more scenes from Neve Wilder.

Also: one of the MC’s annoyed me for much of the book and I didn’t understand how the other MC could be so into him.

Pluses: voyeuristic scenes and a silicone butt.

i seriously need to lower my expectations because i can’t do this anymore.
i usually love neve’s books but this series is nothing but a surprise so of course i didn’t like this.

the main problem is that this is so boring.
i can’t even articulate this more because it was just boring in its entirety. boring characters, boring plot, boring, boring, boring.

then i would like to complain about the voyeurism thing: i know that it’s wrong because there actually wasn’t consent but this isn’t reality and it was hot. so at that point i was like “okay this is incredibly boring but at least i’ll be here for some hot times”. yeah, no.
i really don’t understand why they marketed this with voyeurism when it happens like 3 times at the begging and then we forget about it.
neve’s books are usually way hotter than this.

i did like the last 15% a bit more but it’s just not enough to give this 3 stars.

now it’s time for my rant about the MCs:
-what is spencer’s problem and has he heard of therapy? he has a cactus stuck in his ass without a reason.
-does cory know that you can find a hobby to pass time instead of going around and harass people? seriously dude it’s embarrassing.

Look who’s not listening to what mutuals had to say…

And I got punished for it for paying way too much money on an audio I dnf’d. Maybe I can give it back.

What the hell was that? I really thought I would like it against all odds. Well, I found their first encounter over that stolen parking lot pretty funny and I wasn’t appalled by Spencer watching Cory jerk off through his window. I know that was an issue for some readers. But other than that both main characters were utterly annoying and unlikable. And the plot was boring af so far.

Gawd I hope I get my money back.

3.5 stars - I feel like all of my previous math teachers simultaneously roll their eyes every time I round a 0.5 rating down. Lucky for me, we're a community of readers so, math? Psssshhhh...

So I'm a bit of a Neve Wilder fangirl. She knows her way around a hot sex scene, but it has always been her ability to combine steam with both emotional depth and playful banter that put her in the upper echelon of my MM faves. Color me shocked when the two things I felt were missing from this book were emotion and steam. I didn't feel the feelings between Cory and Spencer at all. There was a ton of sexual attraction and some friendship-building once Spencer let himself see Cory as an actual person, but when those ILY's happened I was like, do you though? And the whole voyeurism thing didn't really appeal to me in the way it was presented. I think this is a fetish best represented in dark romances where the expectations for morals and ethics are a little more flexible, but that's just me.

Despite everything said in the paragraph above, I actually had a really good time reading this book. The banter and flirting were cute and funny. I'm a sucker for witty dialogue and Spencer and Cory's relationship relied on it for survival. I loved the whole DIKcon idea and how much effort was put into it. Being reminded of a certain video and then grinning uncontrollably as I watched it multiple times was an unexpected gift. I also really liked the epilogue. Basically, the story was fun to read, but the romance needed something more.

If you want to see just how good this author can be, read Center of Gravity. It's very different from her other books and an all time favorite of mine.

Cute premise works well for the Franklin U series

I do like a romance where there's a dumb bet that ends up coming back biting the person making it on the backside.

Here it's Frat Boy Cory who's one of the most charismatic - and nice to give him his dues - guys on campus.

He gets into a spat with one of the science geeks who live next door and finds himself fascinated by Spencer.

What follows is a super sweet at times journey into discovering opposites can do more than just attract, they can work in surprising ways.

I wasn't sure at first about a couple of the encounters that take place somewhat unawares and a bit voyeuristic but it was short-lived, and I felt it moved on in an interesting way.

Both young men have their vulnerabilities, and their strengths and the narrative unfolds nicely as they come to slowly learn more about each other and spend time together.

As it's a Neve book, the sexy times are as hot as you'd expect, but also they begin to be tempered with more honest feelings as the weeks move on.

When the big crisis point happens, it hits hard for them both, and there's no easy way through it.

Cory has to work hard for Spencer's forgiveness, and he does it by proving he listened to all his geeky conversations about things that matter to him.

There's a cute Epilogue set a year and a bit later which gives a very solid HFN that has great potential to turn into a true HEA.

This (and football royalty) was the book I was most looking forward to, and while it wasn't bad I really wanted more. I wanted more connection between the characters.

But most of all I was really hoping for more 90's romcom bet vibes. The entire bet premise felt added on in the third act when I would have loved a whole book full of 90s bet vibes!

Initially book 5 wasn't even on my radar but now that I have seen everyone's reviews I am so excited to move on to book 5!

Man, I tried, but I just could not get into this one. Both of the characters rubbed me the wrong way and there were a number of things that just made me slightly uncomfortable and/or didn't really make much sense. Frankly, I didn't think Spencer over-reacted about the parking space, and then, after pulling a prank (which frat bros should be familiar with) somehow he ends up cleaning off the car he pranked?? That made absolutely no sense to me. The window voyeurism felt a bit creepy instead of hot, and I found Cory's cockiness and refusal to back the fuck off to actually me pretty uncomfortable. The bet concept is also tired and predictable, and not my favorite. I usually really enjoy this author's works, but this series has been really lacklustre for me so far. I'm honestly not excited about any of the rest of the books at this point.

And now we have Neve Wilders addition to the FU series and just like the others I enjoyed the hell out of this. Its got a slight enemies to lovers vibe, but thats quickly squashed by a relentless, yet charming Cory. Spencer can only hold out for so long against that mans charm. Then we get all the delicious steam Neve is known for and holy momma! 🥵🔥🔥.

This book was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it right until the end. It also had me watching a certain video mentioned on YouTube and I had no idea how much I needed that video in my life. Epic, just amazingly epic and I swear I've watched it 20 times already. I'm not mentioning which one because I don't want to spoil anything but once you read Bet You you'll understand. And why wouldn't you read it? Spencer and Cory are hot AF and you don't wanna miss out on all the laughs this book has in store for you.

2.5 - 3 stars!

The frat boy and the nerd get together but not before going through the common frat boy/nerd romance path of tropes. I hate the movie She's All That. Hate the original and all the remakes. The whole bet storyline in any form just makes me crazy. So the bet in here was tiresome. There were a lot of things I liked about this book but there was also some things I had a hard time getting past. The wit in here was great but I found some of the banter to be rude. Is this a new thing in romance? I'm all for enemy to lover and snarky chats...but lately it has felt like some dialogue has entered unnecessary rudeness territory.

When that happens I have a difficult time believing in their love and that's mainly where this book went wrong for me at the beginning. It did get better but their relationship was lacking some depth.

However, Neve writes the hottest scenes and the story and its characters felt real. But the voyeurism scenes at the beginning felt off and awkward. It didn't work for me. Neither character held a lot of appeal but I did like their HEA. So honestly, this was fine but mostly forgettable.
