On the worst birthday of my life, I come home to find my boyfriend in bed with another woman. Within hours, I’m drunk, homeless, and pledging to stay single forever. And that is when the dangerously sexy Seelie King rolls through town, looking for fae like me.

Every generation, the king holds a competition for Seelie queen. But for reasons he won’t explain, Torin is looking for a charade, not a real marriage. So when I drunkenly sling insults his way, I have his attention.

When Torin offers me fifty million to participate, I think, “What have I got to lose?” The answer turns out to be “my life,” because my competition will literally kill for the crown.

And the more time I spend with the seductive king, the harder it becomes to remember it’s all supposed to be fake. Now, my life—and my heart—are one the line.

Sadly it wasn't for me. The blurb seemed so intriguing and the way it was marketed made it seem like a perfect read for any fantasy/fae book lovers but it wasn't the case.

I know there are many positive reviews for this one but I personally found a lot of flaws in it that made the book simply boring and unoriginal for me.

It's marketed as-
✔️ Enemies to lovers
✔️ Hungers Games meets the Selection
✔️ Slow burn
✔️ Dual Pov

The blurb makes it sound original but it's not- it's basically The Bachelor, fae edition. Once you start reading it, you start predicting things from page 1 and you'll be proven right. The world building is not elaborate and lacks quality. The writing is quite juvenile and fast paced. I usually don't mind fast paced but when it's done alongside a slow burn romance, it needs to be done delicately in my opinion.

The romance was questionable to me because it lacked chemistry due to the nature of the book moving at lightning speed. There was little room for slow burn. Yes, there was tension but it was sexual and felt forced. The main characters- Ava and Torin lacked chemistry.

Out of all the characters I only liked Aeron who was guarding Ava and Shalini. He was the only one with a spark. Torin, our MMC is bland. Ava, our FMC is also bland. Shalini, the best friend to Ava, is simply annoying.

It also appears multiple times throughout the book that there will be smut. But there's no spice despite the few dialogues inserted in for the sake of it. Honestly, a little spice would've saved this book because whenever the main characters talked sex, they got some personality to themselves.

There's potential in the writing but it needs to not rush the reader. I need to understand the motives, the action, the plot, etc etc. I don't want to just jump into things and go right to the boss level.

So turns out, there's not much I liked about it besides the cover and few enjoyable moments of the competition but other than that it wasn't great. It might work for others better tho. I won't be continuing with the series.

I feel like we just barely scratched the surface of this world and I’m really excited to find out more!

THIS WAS A very entertaining cross between The Bachelor and a fantasy fae romance. It was like a new adult version of The Selection but with sexy fae, not quite as cheesy, and a much more badass heroine 😍😍

TOURNAMENT PLOT LINES are always entertaining and this was no exception! Although Ava did get some help from Torin throughout the tasks, I didn’t feel like it took away from her own badassery. The tournament definitely felt like high stakes and the authors didn’t shy away from making it bloody.

🆗 THE STORY WAS a little bit predictable but I still enjoyed it. I kind of knew where the ending was headed but the suspense and mystery was still done well and kept it entertaining. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger so I’m very happy Book 2 is coming out soon!

THE ROMANCE was fun too! Even though it isn’t really that steamy yet, it definitely hints at becoming much steamier as the romance continues to build 😏 I don’t mind because the book was on the shorter side so I can handle the anticipation and slower build up

Overall, I definitely recommend this if you want something fun that provides a sexy twist on The Bachelor with a high fantasy fae romance. I wouldn’t say it’s a literary masterpiece, but you kind of know you’re getting something just a little trashy with a tournament to find a bride 😅

I really liked this one, BUT after giving it more thought.. probably gonna knock the rating down to 3.5 stars, full Review on my blog!

Initially, I was completely sold on this book based on its description and was very excited to read it. However, the execution left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed. While I did enjoy the book, it was not something that I loved; it was more of a like, something that I could take or leave. I had read some blurbs online that made me think this would be a more spicy read, but for those who are looking for something with more heat, this book is not the right fit. The most it gets to in terms of steaminess is a fully clothed makeout session and lots of tension. The writing style is enjoyable, but it seems like it is primarily setting the stage for future books, for which there is only one sequel out right now, and not much actually happens in this one, other than the completion, and slightly getting to know the characters.

When I was reading high-rated reviews on this book, just to see how this could possibly be rated so high - people were describing it as "if you like ACOTAR", or "The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games"... I'm not really sure about that, I don't see it at all, though there was that "I volunteer as tribute" reference, and I guess how brutal the competition was. But yeah, no.

Frost by C.N. Crawford depicts Ava's journey of coping with her cheating boyfriend on her birthday, leading her to insult the Faerie King while intoxicated. Consequently, she gains notoriety on the Internet. The King is hosting a tournament to select a wife and offers Ava $50 million to participate and win (and honestly it was his event so he would have picked her anyways), but he only desires a business agreement and not actual love - they end up catching feelings.

Ava travels to the Seelie court in a parallel universe to earth for the competition. Ava is a fun character who stands up for herself, and her relatable struggles of self-discovery make her character growth throughout the story engaging. Torin, the Faerie King is sexy, and his interactions with Ava are full of banter and tension. His enigmatic persona piques readers' curiosity, and they eagerly await to learn more about him. I didn't care for Ava's best friend, Shalini, I thought she was an unnecessary addition and was kind of annoying throughout.

The Seelie Court, Faerie, and its magic are nicely portrayed, making readers feel like they're there too. I did really enjoy the descriptions, and the world-building was nice though not particularly groundbreaking.

But honestly, Frost was basically a reality TV show in book form.  The bachelor but fae edition. Although this piqued my interest initially, the novel didn't execute it well. It felt a bit cliché with the overdone trope of a tournament to marry a fae king.  The combination of a brutal fae contest with a dating show didn't quite work for me, although the brutal events were kind of fun to read. I'm a big fan of traditional fae lore, where we have a separate faerie realm with Seelie and Unseelie courts. There's a certain predictability that I enjoy with that. However, in this book, I was perplexed by the modern-world-mixed-with-fantasy; the decision to introduce film crews, cell phones, and televised date nights in the faerie realm. It just felt like an odd mix and I don't really know how I feel about it. It felt like this book was more of a prologue, and I kept waiting for the real story to begin. It took some time for me to fully engage with the story, around 75% is when it really started picking up for me.

The ending was compelling enough to make me want to read the next book in the series, Ambrosia, I really want to know what happens. I hope to see more world-building and plot details in the next book.  Overall, while there were some flaws, I really did find Frost to be enjoyable, and if you think you might like this then you should read it! I am curious about the author's other works and may check them out to see if they differ.

I was given an ARC by NetGalley for an honest review.

Y'ALL. OMG. THIS IS THE BOOK.

I am not even kidding, reading the description is not enough, you HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK.

Frost is the first installment of the Frost and Nectar series and when I say you are in for a treat, you better believe it.

In this book we follow Ava Jones a low-born fae thrust into the human world after having her own kind turn their backs on her, we meet Ava at the lowest point in her life, homeless, heartbroken and distraught.

But one thing we know about Ava is that she has never been one to back down from a fight and bowing to a king of the people that threw her away like trash is surely one battle she can easily win.

Or is it?

Being brought to a land that was never her home in order to change her life around sounds like a great thing...

But after flaws are pointed out and mistakes are made, will Ava finally be able to find her true lineage or will she come to her demise? In order to find out, read this book. It is not one to miss!

If you are into dark romance, books that will constantly have you on the edge of your seat wanting to scream at both of the MCs about how the answers are so blindly in their face this is a book you are going to want to read. It is frustratingly the most action packed, forbidden romance book I have read in awhile.

All in all if you leave the review know one thing is absolutely true...

What a excellent fae romance!!!! I loved the passion and the enemies to lovers trope!!! King Torin is hot and so fucking sexy and I love the whole cold shoulder vibe because it hides a dark and sensuous side that when brought out is flame worthy! Ava is so over douche bags and pretty fuck boys after getting cheated on by her boyfriend Andrew who she's been supporting! When she finds him cheating on her with some what a be actress on her birthday its over and all her dreams are ruined so what does she do? Goes to her favorite bar and gets smashed! And what do you know king Torin is looking for fae women to be part of this years tournament to see so will be his queen. Ava has not lived in the fae world since being a child, the human world is her home now but when she doesn't fall to her knees like the others in adoration it starts a war of words between the two and Ava's just shit faced enough to take this pretty boy down a couple of pegs! But when Torin offers to pay Ava Fifty million dollars to join the tournament all she has to do is win and sit on the throne as the queen for a few months and make it look like they love each other. Neither believe in love and Torin has a secret. If he does fall in love his touch will kill the woman he loves. The chemistry between these two was nuclear!!! Lots of steamy action and great sexual banter made this a hell of a read! Their was also mystery, suspense with secret passages and hidden bookcase rooms and fabulous characters like the fae princesses! They are some deadly and dangerous bitches. And Ava's best friend Shalini is hilarious and a fantastic best friend! I'd be down with her anytime! CN Crawford is a amazing storyteller who spins a great yarn keeping your attention from beginning to end. This book did end on a WTF just happened but I'm totally stoked to read book 2 Ambrosia coming out in January 2023!!!! Until next time Luv's💕💋

3.5 stars. I picked this up because I saw it is coming to GraphicAudio and the premise sounded fun. Ava, a fae in the human world, discovers her human boyfriend cheating on her on her birthday and finds herself drunkenly insulting the Fae King Torin. According to a Fae tradition, the king is about to hold a competition to choose a wife and decides Ava should be part of that televised event; because of an old curse, he’s actually looking for a wife he can’t fall in love with and figures Ava fits the bill. He offers her 30 million to win the potentially lethal contest and eventually become his wife.

While the beginning drew me in completely, soon some things just took me out of the story. For one thing, King Torin professes to loathe Ava which is the whole reason he picks her for the trials but, honestly, it never shows. Enemies to lovers? Not really. It’s more dislike or disdain which lasts all of five minutes. He actually takes good care of her, escorts her around personally and brings her coffee and breakfast. Before he offers her the deal, he also tells her right away that the Fae realm is dying and he needs to marry for the magic his future queen will give the land. It just seems so weird to reveal a state secret so easily.

There are other little things that sometimes just seem off. The king spontaneously visiting a dive bar in the human realm to have a drink, the lack of guards at the palace, him doing servants‘ tasks like waking up Ava and bringing her coffee, being chill with people first-naming him. All this doesn’t seem very kingly and I would have preferred for him to live up to his cold, bad-ass Fae image - at least at the beginning. I’m all for him showing a different side once he got to know Ava better.

So yes, I’m sad to say all of these things (and others), both small and not so small, disrupted my immersion. It’s all about trusting the author to make a story as believable and verisimilar as possible – and I quickly lost my trust here. I think it’s quite a shame; this book had great potential as a romantasy. I’m actually quite put out that with a few alterations my escapism would have been complete.

Still, I really did enjoy myself for long stretches and it was mostly because of the chemistry between Ava and Torin.
(They were only kissing up till now – it seems like the sex will have to wait until he’s in love with her.) It also speaks for the book that I only intended to read a few chapters to see if I wanted to buy the GraphicAudio adaptation and I ended up finishing it, despite my issues. (I also was unaware it is a duology so the cliffhanger annoyed be but that one's on me.) I’m still not sure if I will pick up the GraphicAudio or the second book.

Interesting fae storyline!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙❤️💚
Steam: 🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 😊😘😟🤓
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Full Cast Narration

The heroine: Ava - she is Fae who lives in the mortal world. She was kicked out of Fairy when she was young, because she was given up for adoption and she has no memory of her family. In Fairy, if you don’t know your lineage, you don’t belong. It is her 26th birthday and she got off work early and found her boyfriend Andrew with another woman. So, she went to a local bar and met her friend Shaina to get her drunk on.

The Hero: King Torin - He is nearly 26 and it is time to get married. He needs a queen to restore the magic to Fairy. Though he and his sister are cursed. She is blind and he can’t ever fall in love. If he falls in love, he will freeze his love with a touch. He is determined to choose a bride based on a contest of a hundred fae women. Six or seven of them are fae princesses and the rest are common fae. The commoners would never win, but he lets them compete, so it looks good.

The Story: At the bar while Ava is drunk, King Torin stops in for a drink and Ava insults him and refuses to bow to her king. She says since the Fae kicked her out when she was young, she considers herself a human. Later that night, King Torin decides the best thing to do is to find a bride who hates him as much as he hates her, that will save him from his curse. Of course, no one fits that description more than Ava. Torin offers Ava a lot of money to join the tournament and become his queen.

I liked the story, but didn’t love it enough that I would really want to listen to the audiobook more than once. So, I am giving this story four stars overall rather than five. I liked the back story about Ava not knowing where she came from and searching for information on her real parents, also the competition was pretty good, especially with how dangerous it was with the fae princesses being so blood thirsty. I just didn’t get as involved in the story as I sometimes do with books that I really love. There was a cliffhanger and there is one more book in the series.

This audiobook was the dramatized adaptation with full cast narration and was narrated by Karen Novack, Nanette Savard, Nazia Chaudhry, Scott McCormick, Yasmin Tuazon, John Kielty, Kay Eluvian, Taylor Coan, Jenna Sharpe, Alex Hill-Knight, Stephanie Nemeth-Parker and more. I like the dramatized adaptation, with background noises and all that, though with this one there were times when the background noises did bother me at times, like the background music when they were at a bar and walking noises while they were talking. Though the narration was terrific.

the way that i blew through this y'all!

i haven't read The Selection, but from what i understand it's basically that but *make it fae*

when i picked it up i wasn't sure how much i'd like it, but i was cackling so much at the first few pages alone i got immediately sucked in. the FMC Ava is spunky and hilarious, the prince Torin is actually a pretty standup MMC, and the competition is fierce. while there are tons of laughs, there's also danger and mystery (with a touch of violence). the buildup and chemistry between Ava and Torin is everythinggggg i was literally screaming NOW KISS at my kindle.

i could see the reveal/twist coming most of the book, but i still enjoyed it.

i'm immediately sprinting to book 2.

So good! a Changelings story!

Really loved this one! It’s nice to hear a changelings story because we don’t get many of those? Often humans are turned far etc but I love the idea of this one! Can’t wait to read the next book!

- Slow burn but lots of chemistry so 🌶🌶/5
- Fae dating reality ‘TV show’ (in real life I find these shows petty and harbingers of the downfalls of society but it’s interesting in these books)
- cliffhanger ending

I woke up to an email of an arc of this book today and YES I did boycott all weekend plans to binge read this book. I REGRET NOTHING. This book was incredible, y’all.
We start the story with Ava being broken hearted and basically rock bottom when she walks in on her long time boyfriend with another woman in bed. On her BIRTHDAY! The audacity. 🙄 she finds herself at the bar with her friend, and from here the story gets juicy. King of the Seelie, Torin pops in to get a drink while he’s going around to tell all the fae women they are joining a super intense contest to fight to basically the death to become queen.

Without spoiling the rest, I will say it’s hilarious and such a fun journey. I loved that the fae and humans coexisted and the humans believed the fae were basically these incredible celebrity/gods that they adored and fangirled over. I LOVED the reality show idea of filming the competition.

The chemistry between our two mains was top tier. I really just ate up the tension and spice in this book.

The ending was an incredible cliff hanger that had me screaming when it ended. I LOVED IT!!! I was gassed. I need so many questions answered.

I’m so thankful I got early access to this book. I cannot wait to have a physical copy of this when it releases this October. Thank you SO MUCH for writing this incredible story. I am SO EXCITED for the next one!!

ALL THE STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.”

Ava was a mess. Torin was a mess. This whole book was a mess.

And that ending? I knew from the beginning Ava would be ✨special✨ but not this special.

She acted like a child most of the time, and now I'm suddenly supposed to believe she is one of the monstrous and wicked Unseelie? Probably even their queen? Nuh-uh.

And don't get me started on the trials. I thought this would be some fantasy version of The Bachelor with a few fae bitch-fighting in high heels over the hot king. In the end, we had two trials. Two. A race and fencing. FENCING. Yeah, let that sink in.

I liked the writing, and some of the steamy scenes were quite nice, but aside from this Frost was a bit of a letdown.

Also, isn't Torin that dude from The Hobbit?

-------------------------------------------------

If this is anything like The Selection, I will cry.

So happy this is over. I honestly haven’t read anything this poorly written in a long while. It read like a badly edited piece of fanfiction. Besides the initial idea, I have nothing to commend this book on.

A fast paced NA fantasy romance that I binged in two sittings! 😍

Perfect for fans of The Selection series who are looking for something spicier, deadlier, and with fae and magic! 🔥❤️

Ava, a common fae living among humans, goes through a terrible heartache after she catches her human boyfriend cheating on her. As she goes out with a friend to forget her pain, she encounters the powerful and dangerous Seelie King of the Fae: Torin. She drunkly and publicly insults him and his entire competition to find the Seelie Queen.

King Torin cannot fall in love under any circumstances, his search for a Queen is purely for the safety of his people and kingdom. Ava seems like the perfect candidate for this: he absolutely can't stand her! The hate-to-love slow burn romance was on point, I loved every interaction between these two! It reminded me of another of my favorite reads this year: A Forest of Stars by Linsey Hall.

The ending has a huge plot twist that I did not see coming and I can't wait for book 2! 😍 Thank you to the author for gifting me an ARC for review!

Taki mix Okrutnego i Rywalek.

4,5/5⭐️

-grumpy x sunshine
-elfy
-faerie x świat ludzki
-turniej
-król x odmieńczyni

By all accounts, this book should have sucked for me
It has every cliche that I hate in a book
a female who happens to be a fae, revolves all her life around her boyfriend just to discover that he cheated on her and ends up in a revenge-hate drunken situation where she ends up competing for the position of the queen of the Fae

I mean even typing this, I am surprised that I liked this book
I really really liked this book
I liked it so much that I had to start book 2 before doing this review

⚜Theme: Urban Paranormal fantasy romance (i guess!!!!)
⚜Characters: Faes
⚜TW: violence, abandonment, cheating, beheading, sword fighting
⚜ tropes: slow-burn, portal, lost-identity, Incapable of Love
⚜ POV : One sided First person POV (yes it's one not double. Torin has literally 2 chapters only)
⚜ spice 1/2 🌶 surprising for a supposedly quick read Fae book
⚜ rating: 4.25🌟🌟🌟🌟🔅
⚜standalone: No, duet
⚜Ending: cliffhanger

So Ava is a rejected Fae living amongst the humans. Discovering that her long-term boyfriend cheated on her, she ends up drunk insulting the King of Fae - Torin. Torin cannot fall in love due to a secret curse but he has to take a wife. He sees Ava as an opportunely and strikes a deal with her to be his fake fae wife to restore the magic to the kingdom. the catch? she has to win brutal tournaments.
and this is just the first few chapters so no spoilers here :)

I was very intrigued by the fast pace of the story
the world-building was simple yet understandable especially if you read too many Fae books.
Every action was logical and has a point

as for the characters, I was irritated by Ava at first. I mean how stupid could you be to pay your BFs mortgage in hopes of he marrying you !!! But she really came throw throughout the story.

Torin is your everyday rigid handsome Fae King hiding a secret
I did not care about him all too much to be honest especially when he causally talks about how they used to kidnap children to be fostered in Fae land !!!
" Humans are so fragile that it's confusing to us. They really die very easily." and then his first hand says casually "It was a different time"
duuuuuuuuude

I liked the tournaments, but I wished there was one that showed something that required using your brain and not just your brawns.

this was marketed as double POV. IT IS NOT. Don't be fooled. Torin has only 2 chapters out of the whole 36 - very important 2 chapters, but still not enough.

But here is the kicker
and you could strop reading because I think there are some spoilers

This is a satire
the minute this clicked in my head it immediately raised the book from 3 stars to 4.25
It is definetly making fun of the "Bachelor" series
The way they choose the contestants
the meetings with the "chosen bachelor"
how each one of the ladys tries her best to present herself as "the one"
the ridiculous tasks they give to them
the cat-fights that happens

so if you read it as a Satire, this is absolutely phenomenanl

so yeah, I loved it, and shshshshhshs I am reading Ambrosia

The Bachelor meets the fae. I have read others like this and it follows similar lines. Women compete to become the next Queen of the Fae. Of course, the trials can be quite deadly (as it should be, this is the fae after all). The king has some big secret and there just might be one in the background of the main character.

I liked Ava. She has spunk even if her life just turned real ugly and she isn't one just to bow her head to a king, particularly when he is coming into the human world. Thank you very much. Particularly when he acts entitled. But it turns out there is more to him. The chemistry is good. I also like the friendship between Ava and her human friend.

Some of it is predictable, but then you can say that about a lot of books. A light read for a gray and rainy day.

I saw that this was on graphic audio and that’s its enemies to lovers, so I needed it immediately!

I honestly really enjoyed this. It was a quick, action packed fantasy that is making me want to pick up the second book right away!

I also was dying laughing at the FMC’s attitude, she was great

I absolutely love stories about Fae and this one really swept me up and carried me away. When I read the synopsis I knew that this would be a book that I definitely meshed with.

I love Crawford's smoothly executed writing style. The reader is immediately drawn into the story. The plot of the story is entertaining if not a little predictable at times. I couldn't pull myself away once I started reading. I enjoyed the world-building in this book. I like the Fae world that is layered over our own. I found myself craving more information about the Fae world as I kept reading.

Ava's character was delightful. I am a huge fan of a strong female lead and Ava was just that. She was a spurned female with nothing to lose at the start of the book. She really proved her mettle throughout the competitions in the story. I immediately loved her. Torin is a decent character. I felt that he could have used a little more character development because I enjoyed his character but I didn't feel as attached to his character as I did with Ava's character. I did enjoy the secondary characters and the spark that they added to the story.

The romance in the story was a slowish-burn affair. It didn't get too steamy but I really loved the way that Crawford executed their romance. Ava and Torin spend time together preparing for the tasks in the competition and they get to see each other's personalities. The reader can see the gradual development of feelings between the two of them as the story progresses. And it is sort of an enemies-to-lovers romance so it's pretty satisfying.

Overall, this was an exciting story with interesting characters and an intriguing Fae world. If you are a fan of stories with original ideas and addictive writing then you'll want to grab this one!

I ate this up in a few hours without hesitation. I was working (keyword being *was*) while listening to the audiobook, but found myself staring out the window more often than not. This demanded my full attention.
It wasn't the most original or intricative of stories (although all the princesses and their clans were a bit confusing), but I loved it.

"Tell me again how much you hate me."
I mean, when she started ranting at him when meeting him for the first time, I KNEW the tension would be good. Torion is a fae fuckboy, and he knows he's handsome, but I was rooting for him nonetheless because he's broken and I can fix him, okay?

"One of those I-give-up-buns with hair sticking out"
Ava, my girl, why you do me dirty like that? I've been giving up for the past 7 years if that's what you think. Apart from her hating on my day-to-day hairdo, I loved her. She's strong, vicious, a little broken but aren't we all? We get the feeling pretty early on that there's something *sPeCiAL* about her, and usually I don't like it when the FMC is so different because she dares to speak up. Luckily, it didn't turn out that way because there actually is something different about her so phew.

"A vow of CHASTITY? Who does that? [... Literally 2minutes pass] But I don't mind, I like a bit of a challenge. He's like a hot priest."
Shalini, let's not go there rn, maybe?
I'm happy Shalini was part of the book. Even though Torion and Ava have good banter, Shalini is the comic relief you don't know you need until she's spewing her (at times rather impure) thoughts.

A final note before I go look for the second book: C.N. Crawford really did an amazing job at making the smallest, most unimportant characters still SO unlikeable, wow. We hear about them for only a few pages throughout the entire book but everyone knows an Andrew (and/or an Ashley) and don't we just all want a gorgeous fae king who would gladly unalive them for you in a very colourful way?

A bit inconsistent, things are mentioned and then forgotten (like the crystal), and the book needed a copy editor to pick up some grammatical errors and missing words in sentences.

BUT it was quick, light, and fun. I've never watched The Bachelor, but maybe I would if Fae were involved 😅
