Mornings in Jenin
In the refugee camp of Jenin, Amal is born into a world of loss—of home, country, and heritage. i wrote it. so, my rating isn't all that relevant to readers. but for what it's worth, it came from a place of love, and I put pieces of my heart in this narrative.

انتهيت منها مع آذان الفجر، لم
أستطع منع نفسي من مواصلة القراءة، فغادرني النوم حتى انتهيت منها مع صوت المؤذن يصدح قائلاً : الله أكبر .. الله أكبر
"من أين لي قلب يتحمل كل هذا الألم المسكوب بين سطور هذه الرواية ؟"
كان هذا تعليقي عندما اقتربت من نهاية الرواية
هل يوجد متعة في الألم ؟ هل نستمتع ونحن نقرأ وطناً - على الورق - وقد سُلب منا، من بين أيدينا ؟
ما السر وراء إعطاء أي كتاب أو رواية تتحدث عن فلسطين التاريخية ونكبتها ونكستها وانتفاضاتها وحروبها خمس نجوم، هل هو الحنين إلى أيام ولت ومضت أم أنه نوع من المواساة والتعزية ؟
إذا لم نحرر شبراً من أرضك يا فلسطين، فدعينا على الأقل نحتفل بتلك الروايات التي تبعث في نفوسنا رائحة برتقالك وزيتونك
بينما ينام العالم، نعم كل ما حدث لنا هنا على هذه الأرض، حدث والعالم يغط في نومٍ عميق، لا يدري حجم المأساة والكارثة التي تحدث هنا على هذه البقعة من الأرض لهؤلاء المهمشين المطحونين
هل أنصح بقراءتها؟ نعم بكل تأكيد، اقرؤها وترحموا على فلسطين المجروحة والتي ما زال ينزف جرحها منذ 64 عاماً
ملاحظة
قد تشعر بثقل بعض الجمل لأنها مترجمة عن الانجليزية في الحوارات بين أبطال الرواية وخاصة بعض التعبيرات التي لا نستخدمها نحن العرب في حواراتنا اليومية، فنحن لا نقول للجريح مثلاً: " لا تتحدث .. فقد تزيد الأمر سوءاً " فهذه جملة إنجليزية بجدارة

الإبداع..الحقيقة اللي بتوجع القلب ..الدموع اللي موقفتش طول مانا بقرأ الرواية ..بداية من عين حوض وتهجير أهلها لصبرا وشاتيلا ودبح أهلها..لاحساسك بالقهر والعجز كل ما تقرأ عن مأساة فلسطين...

I don't know..I'll try.
This was, most certainly, the most heartbreaking novel I have ever, so far, come to read. I literally left it aside and swam in a river of my own tears and hatred. I can't really write a review that will give this novel all of its credit. I just know that I hated myself, I hated being an Arab. And I hated that words will never, ever portray the true situation in Palestine, nor the death statistics will embrace the idea of death itself. I cried in nearly every single chapter of this novel. I've always wanted to read and read more about Palestine, and now that I started, I don't think I want to ever stop, just to be reminded, whenever I forget, that we're so selfish, superficial and empty-hearted.
Susan's vivid language helped me imagine every scene int he novel as if it is real. One of the things I really enjoyed in this novel. It was like living all of the people in it, generation after generation. I'd also like to mention that it reminded me of two novels: One of Khaled Husseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns in the sense of a never-ending loss and helplessness (although this one was much better in my opinion). And the other of Radwa Ashour's Trilogy, in the sense of passing every memory and experience from generation to generation.
I wholeheartedly admired how Susan used Darweesh's and Gibran's poems in the novel in such a poetic way that matched the topics. The songs of Fayrouz, oh how they so much reminded me of the Palestinian Intifada back then.
I will always long for a visit to Palestine. To Jerusalem. And I will always remember this novel. I will never be proud to be an Arab again, though.
If you ever intend to read this novel, be sure to be either in a good mood so that you won't get really depressed after reading, or be in a bad mood already that reading the novel will make you feel like your depression is nothing. You will love Hassan, Dalia, Amal, Yousef. You will love being in Palestine. You will love being in Beirut. You will hate al ghorba. You will hate the whole world. And centralize your feelings around Palestine. You will love Palestine, like you've never known it ever before.

قرأتُ عن الرواية لأول مرةٍ منذ عام ونصف تقريبًا من تاريخ قراءتها، لم يكن هناك مراجعات كثيرة عنها، ولكن المراجعات القليلة كانت تحمل كم كبير من المدح. فور أن رأيتها على أرفف إحدى المكتبات اشتريتها، كان هذا منذ عام تقريبًا، ومن حينها استقرت في مكتبتي العزيزة، على وعدٍ بقراءة قريبة. بين الحين والآخر كنت أنظر إليها على الرَفّ، أسحبها، أتأمل غلافها، صورةٌ من أروع ما رأيت، أدقق في تفاصيلها، صورة الغلاف وحدها أشعرتني بكم الوجع الكامن بين الصفحات، عينيّ الفتاة تؤكد ذلك. تمرّ الأيام، يتزايد عدد من قرأوها، يرتفع عدد من بكوا بسببها، ومن تغيرت حياتهم بعدها. في ليلة، نهضتُ متثاقلًا من على السرير الدافئ، فتحتُ المكتبة، ولا إراديًا جذبتُ الرواية من على الرف. لحظات تأمل أخيرة للغلاف، ثم تسائلت: ماذا وراء هذا الوجه الطفولي المحتمي بالباب يا تٌري؟، حان الوقت لنرى..
ويا الله!، يا الله على ما جرى.
ما حدث لي وأنا أقرأها لا يوصف بالكلمات، لساني عاجز عن التعبير، ما هذا الذي قرأته؟، من هؤلاء الفلسطينيون؟، هل هم بشر من لحمٍ ودمٍ طبيعيّ مثلنا أم أن أجسادهم النبيلة خُلقت من مادة أخرى خارقة قادرة على تحمل كل هذا الكم من القهر والوجع؟. هل أرواحهم التي ترى الموت بين عشيّة وضحاها أكثر مما ترى النور والظلام تشبه أرواحنا البائسة التي يرهقها جوٌ حار أو رتابة إيقاع الحياة؟. هل الهواء.. الهواء الذي يتنفسونه مختنقًا برائحة الدم والجثث به ما يضمن لهم الحياة كهوائنا؟. سبحان الله!، رغم كل ما ذكرته، وهو لا يمثل نقطة من نهر بسالتهم، يضربون لك كل يوم أعظم أمثلة للشجاعة والبسالة وحب الوطن.
يا ربي!، قلبي ما زال يخفق.؛ يخفق من قطرة وجع، فما باله إذا غرق في نهر الوجع الجاري في أراضي فلسطين، مارًا بكل بيت، بكل أسرة، بكل فرد، ليعطي كل فلسطيني جرعته قهرًا كل كل يوم.
هى حكاية حرب بنارها المثيرة للقشعريرة، والحارقة، والمثيرة للقشعريرة مجددًا؛ حكاية حبٍ صاخب، وانتحاريّ يُفجر نفسه طلبًا لحريةٍ طال انتظارها. حكاية آمال التى فرّت من مصيرها ليصبح اسمها كلمة تلاشى معناها، آمال التي سُميت آمال بالألف الممدودة، لأن الاسم بالهمزة يعني أملًا واحدًا فقط، أمنية واحدة فقط، وهي أكثر من ذلك بكثير. هي حكاية أطفال كبروا يغربلون الجنون ليعثروا على مغزاهم، حكاية حقيقة شقت طريقها عبر الأكاذيب لكي تبرز من شقّ، من ندبة وجه رجلٍ ما.
قلبي ما زال يرتجف..
اهدأ يا قلبي، فأنت لم تر شيئًا مما قرأته، لم تر البيوت المهدمة، ولا الدماء تجري عل�� الأرض تسقي الزرع بدلًا من الماء، لم تسمع صوت جنازير الدبابات، ولا طلقات الرصاص، ولا صرخات الهلع.
فقط،، تعلم، وتذكر الدرس الأعظم من هذه التجربة:
" أيًا كان شعورِك، اكبتيه في داخلك"

ive been trying to stay aware of the current situation between israel and palestine, i am sad that it took reading this book to find out that the israeli occupation of palestine has been going on since the 1940s. as an american, media has historically been pro-israel, so i appreciate reading a palestinian perspective. this book no doubt gives a voice and sense of humanity to palestinians.
that being said, i just could not get on board with the writing style. i have seen countless reviews of people saying how much they love the writing and storytelling, so im sad it didnt work for me. i found the constant POV jumps between characters and 1st/3rd person, as well as the random time shifts, very disjointed. the narrative is also a lot of telling and no showing, which is a personal pet-peeve of mine. so it was often a struggle for me to read this because i wasnt enjoying how the story was written, which is unfortunate.
but i do understand the heart of the novel and value the personal connection the author brings to her book.

Heartbreaking and humanizing novel that portrays the horrors of Israeli violence on generations of Palestinians. The novel depicts the many terrors (e.g., torture, killing) that Israeli soldiers have inflicted upon Palestinians, and though it was difficult and at times nauseating to read, I felt appreciative to Susan Abulhawa for capturing these plights so that we as readers are forced to reckon with them (obviously, reading about these topics is not even close to the suffering of actually living them.) I’m also grateful that Abulhawa highlighted the full humanity of our Palestinian protagonists in this novel, their deep love for one another and their homeland as well as the trauma and anguish they’ve faced.
This book was published in 2006 and it’s honestly so sickening – like actually makes me want to throw up – that the same horrible violence portrayed in this novel is happening right now. Over 15,000 Palestinians have been killed in the past two months. As someone living in the United States, it’s sickening to know that my tax dollars are going to fund Israel’s crimes against humanity. Take action for a permanent ceasefire now.

I have had a hard time trying to review this book because it affected me on so many emotional levels. I almost feel like I am betraying the characters to say how much I enjoyed this book just because it was such an intense insight into a part of the world I knew so little about. Abulhawa enlightened and devestated me at the turn of every page... I learned about the beauty of Palestine, its people and their hardships, the wars, the savagery and the intense hatred we can impose on one another. I was ashamed and sad, confused and depressed for days after this read and yet within the sadness of its pages glimmers hope, a hope for reconciliation and peace. What an incredible read.

“لقد وُلدتِ لاجئة، ولكن أعدكِ بأني سوف أموت إذا كان لابُد لي من ذلك حتى لا تموتي وأنتِ لاجئة.”
يا الله على هذة الرواية
هذة الرواية اخدت منى 9 شهور قراءة على فترات متقطعة ليس بسبب اى شى سوى كمية الام التى رافقتنى طوال قراءة الرواية
احداث اربعة اجيال من المعاناة التى تتخلل العقل و تعبت القلب
اسلوب الكاتبة الاكثر من الرائع جعلنا نعيش الماساة و المعاناة مع فلسطين اول القبلتين و ارض الرسالات السماوية من اول نزوح اليهود الى حرب 48 و النكسة الى الانتفاضة الفلسطينية الثانية
على الرغم من ان الاحداث الدرامية من وحى خيال الكاتبة الا ان الاحداث التاريخية حقيقية من مذابح و انتهاكات و قتلى فهى سيرة ذاتية لتاريخ فلسطين ليست رواية فقط
رواية تخللتها لحظات سعادة و فخر و لكنها للاسف لحظات وسط كم المعاناة و التضحيات

هذة الرواية اخدت منى 9 شهور قراءة على فترات متقطعة ليس بسبب اى شى سوى كمية الام التى رافقتنى طوال قراءة الرواية
احداث اربعة اجيال من المعاناة التى تتخلل العقل و تعبت القلب
اسلوب الكاتبة الاكثر من الرائع جعلنا نعيش الماساة و المعاناة مع فلسطين اول القبلتين و ارض الرسالات السماوية من اول نزوح اليهود الى حرب 48 و النكسة الى الانتفاضة الفلسطينية الثانية
على الرغم من ان الاحداث الدرامية من وحى خيال الكاتبة الا ان الاحداث التاريخية حقيقية من مذابح و انتهاكات و قتلى فهى سيرة ذاتية لتاريخ فلسطين ليست رواية فقط
رواية تخللتها لحظات سعادة و فخر و لكنها للاسف لحظات وسط كم المعاناة و التضحيات

"كيف يمكنني ان اصفح ياأمي؟ كيف لِجنين أن تنسى ؟ كيف يمكن أن يحمل المرء عبئا كهذا ؟ كيف للمرء أن يعيش في عالم يتجاهل مثل هذا الظلم كل هذه السنين ؟ هل هذا ما يعنيه أن يكون المرء فلسطينياً ، ياأمي ؟ "
"كان قد عمر أكثر من مائة سنة، يا أمي. أن يعيش المرء هذه الفترة الطويلة، لكي يُسحق فقط حتى الموت بواسطة جرافة، هل هذا ما يعنيه ان يكون الإنسان فلسطينياً؟"
عندما أبدأ في قراءة رواية عن فلسطين أقوم معها بإعداد نفسي لكثير من الألم والحزن و العجز و الغضب لما حدث ولازال يحدث في فلسطين ..
اى رواية عن فلسطين قد تكون الأحداث الدرامية والتفاصيل خيالية من تأليف الكاتبة لكنها في ذات الوقت واقعية جدا .. واقعية لدرجة الألم ..
"صعب علي دائما ألا أنفعل مع القدس ....
إنها تبث في داخلي إحساساً بأنها ليست غريبة عني ولا أنا غريبة عنها، ذلك اليقين الفلسطيني الثابت الذي لا يقبل الجدل، على أنني أنتمي إلى هذه الأرض. إنها تمتلكني بغض النظر عمن يحتلها ، لأن ترابها هو من يحرس جذوري وعظام أسلافي "
وفي هذه الرواية من خلال الاحداث تقدم الكثير من الاحداث التاريخية من قبل نزوح اليهود وظهور إسم " إسرائيل " لكنها ستظل فلسطين إلى ابد الابدين رغما عن الجميع وحرب 48 وتهجير الفلسطينين من بيوتهم واراضيهم .
"سقط العام ١٩٤٨ في فلسطين من الرزنامة إلى المنفى ، متوقفاً عن حساب العد السائر للأيام والشهور والسنوات، ليصبح بدلاً من ذلك ضباباً لا نهاية له ! "
ومجزرة صبرا وشاتيلا في لبنان والانتفاضة الفلسطينية وحتى مجزرة مخيم جِنين في فلسطين الذي تم إنكارها والتقليل من بشاعتها دوليا بالطبع كما يحدث مع مجازر الإسرائيليين في الوقت الذي يتم تضخيم أي رد ف��ل من الفلسطينين وإتهامهم بالإرهابين.
"تمددت زوجته وابنته في مقبرة جماعية تحت أكوام القمامة ، في ظل حصانة قاتليهم ، في إطار الوعود الزائفة للقوى العظمى، وتحت لامبالاة العالم تجاه الدم العربي المسفوك "
على الرغم من ان الاحداث الدرامية من وحى خيال الكاتبة الا ان الاحداث التاريخية حقيقية من مذابح و انتهاكات و قتلى فهى جزء من تاريخ فلسطين .
قد لا يوجد عائلة بإسم أبو الهيجا لكنها حكاية شعب فلسطيني .. فهي عائلة تُعبر عن حياة الكثير من العائلات الفلسطينية .. من طرد العائلات من بيوتها والإستيلاء على ممتلكاتهم ، وإيداع المواطنين في السجون بدون وجه حق مع الضرب والتعذيب الوحشي ، واختفاء اشخاص دون معرفة ماحدث حقيقة لهم ، والكثير من القتلي سواء برصاص القناصة والجنود أو القصف الجوي وتدمير المنازل على اصحابها والكثير من المجازر . بجانب انك قد يتم إجبارك على الخروج من بلادك او يتم منعك من العودة لها ..
"كانت قصته هي قصة كل واحد منا : حكاية بسيطة عن النهب ، عن تجريد المرء حتى العظام من إنسانيته، عن إلقائنا كالقمامة في مخيمات للاجئين لاتصلح حتى للفئران، عن تركنا من دون حقوق أو وطن أو دولة ، بينما أدار العالم ظهره ، ليشاهد أو يهتف لابتهاج المغتصبين، وهم يعلنون دولة جديدة سُميت إسرائيل."
الرواية بها الكثير من المشاعر الجميلة والحب والدفء العائلى لكنها تحمل الكثير من الألم والفقد والموت والقتل ..وتأثير الأحداث وما نمر به بعلاقتنا بالآخرين وشخصياتنا ومشاعرنا ..
“وجدت الصلابة تربة خصبة في قلوب الفلسطينيين, وبذرت بذور المقاومة ونَمَتْ تحت جلودهم.أصبحت القدرة على الاحتمال
السمةَ المميزة لمجتمع اللاجئين,لكنهم دفعوا الثمن غالياً ... لقد ضحُّوا برقَّة الإحساس. تعلَّموا أن يحتفلوا بالاستشهاد,
فالاستشهاد وحده هو الذي يقدَّم الحرية.”
ستجد انك تحادث نفسك وتطالبها أن لا تتعلق بأي شخصية لأنها قد يتم قتلها بوحشية في الصفحة التالية لكنك لن تملك سوى الوقوع في حب الشخصيات في الرواية بكل مشاعرها ومخاوفها وأفكارها ..
من يحيي وباسمة وأبنائهم حسن ودرويش إلى أبناء حسن يوسف وإسماعيل وآمال وزوجته داليا وانتقالا إلى زواجهم وأبنائهم ... فهي رواية أجيال من الجد إلى الأحفاد..
"كانت شابة في السابعة عشرة من عمرها، خائفة وضعيفة، عندما حرر جنود الحلفاء المعسكر الذي كانت فيه ، وقد قُتلت عائلتها جميعاً بالمحرقة في الحرب العالمية الثانية وكانت المفارقة التي أنشبت مخالبها المريرة في ذهني ان ماما نجت أيضا من مذبحة أودت بحياة عائلتها كلها تقريبا. الفارق الوحيد هو أن المذبحة الأخيرة وقعت بسبب الأولى، مما يؤكد لي الحقيقة التي لا تفر منها ، وهي أن الفلسطينين دفعوا ثمن المحرقة اليهودية ."
من الأشياء التي جعلتني الرواية افكر او اتسائل عنها أيضا كيف لمن هرب ونجا من مجازر ومذابح النازية لليهود يقوم هو نفسه بمذابح مماثلة لآخرين!! كيف لمن رأى عائلته تُقتل امامه يقوم بإعادة نفس المشهد !! كيف لمن تم تعذيبه يقوم بتعذيب الآخرين بهذه الوحشية ؟؟ كيف تطالبوا العالم بإدانة هتلر ومافعله باليهود وانتم قمتم بما هو اسوأ وأكثر بشاعة على مدار سنين وأجيال كثيرة ؟؟!وتبرروا ذلك بأنها أرضكم الموعودة وأنتم تعلمون بداخلكم ان هذه كذبة سخيفة ومبرر اسخف .
ويوما ما سنستطيع وسنتحد ونتجمع لطردكم وإعادة فلسطين للفلسطينيين، للعرب .. يوما ما لعله قر��ب سنسترجع حق الشهداء .

ترددت في تقييمها بخمس أو أربع نجمات. ربما تستحق أربع نجمات و نصف في نظري
الرواية تحكي تاريخ فلسطين من النكبة سنة 1948 إلى أوائل القرن الواحد و العشرين، من خلال متابعة شخصيات عائلة يحيى أبو الهيجا جيلا بعد جيل. الشخصيات و حكاياتها الشخصية خيالية، لكن الخط التاريخي حقيقي بطبيعة الحال.
الحكاية بصفة عامة مشابهة لحكاية "الطنطورية" لرضوى عاشور مع الفارق في كون الطنطورية اهتمت بمسار الفلسطينيين اللاجئين إلى لبنان في حين تتناول هذه الرواية قصة مخيم جنين للاجئين.
من غير المجدي أن أشرح كم هي مؤثرة الحكاية و حزينة و كئيبة... فذلك هو تاريخ فلسطين الذي نعرفه، و إن اختلفت تفاصيل القصة الخاصة بكل عائلة و فرد. في بعض الأحيان لم أكن قادرة على استيعاب كمّ الألم الذي ينضح من الصفحات فيصيبني الاكتئاب و أتوقف عن القراءة برهة قبل المواصلة. مواقف كثيرة أبكتني.
أحزنني مصير داليا و حسن و درويش. أحببت شخصيتي هدى و أسامة رغم أنهما من الشخصيات الثانوية تقريبا. أحببت آمال قبل أن تسافر إلى الولايات المتحدة ثم فقدت احترامي أثناء سفرها. و لعل النجمة التي أردت إسقاطها من التقييم هي بسبب التسيب و الانحلال الذي يدخل على سلوك العربي و المسلم حين يسافر إلى الغرب، و هو ما توضح من خلا�� شخصيتي آمال و ماجد، مما صنع حاجزا نفسيا بيني و بينهما منعني من التفاعل التام مع قصتهما.
هناك أيضا بعض التفاصيل الحميمية عن العلاقات بين الأزواج التي لم أستسغها. لكنني فسرت ذلك بأن الرواية في المقام الأول كتبت بالانجليزية و وجهت إلى جمهور أمريكي، مما جعل الكاتبة ربما تهتم بإبراز الجانب العاطفي في العائلة الفلسطينية، كونها عائلات طبيعية و زاخرة بالمشاعر عكس الصورة التي تروج عن الاستشهاديين الإرهابيين

A Palestinian perspective on the conflict in the Middle East? Yes, this book delivers that. A good novel? No, not that.
This book starts with the idyllic lives of Palestinian villagers in the early 1940s. It moves on to describe their displacement into a refugee camp, where the main character, Amal, is born. From there it (mostly) follows her life up until the early 2000s. Amal grows up in the camp, but a scholarship is her ticket out and from there her life takes some interesting turns until she finally winds up back in the camp again. (No spoilers; that's in the prologue.)
So here's the thing about this book. It feels very raw and angry; emotionally honest even where it's playing fast and loose with the facts. It's one of the most manipulative books I've ever read. It's almost impossible to lose sight, even for a moment, of the fact that the author is Making A Point. The writing, on the sentence level, is not bad. There are some good insights and connections drawn. But it's so heavy-handed in its message, so depressingly predictable in its tragedy, so insistent in telling the reader how to feel, that the agenda tends to overwhelm the novel.
I do think the author makes some effort to be fair. The individual Jewish characters in this book are mostly not bad people. But at the same time, the Palestinian characters are so full of strength, love and solidarity that there's barely a flaw to be found in any of them (and those few flaws they have are all directly attributable to abuses suffered at the hands of Israeli soldiers). And while the author doesn't exactly deny that some Palestinians have done some ugly things, she also doesn't mention these things until late in the book (even when, chronologically, they happened much earlier), after these people have suffered so much apparently unprovoked abuse that it's impossible to imagine them not fighting back. Even then, she glosses over the uglier stuff.
So the manipulation of the timeline, the idealization of the Palestinians and their pre-1948 lives, and the selectivity about where the book goes all make it difficult to trust Abulhawa, even though much of what she tells us is probably true. My impression is that she assumes her readers have already heard the Israeli side, and she's here to give us the Palestinian side. No doubt this is true of many readers, but I expect more from a novel than a slanted answer to slanted media reports. There are places where the book tries to rise above that, most notably one of the scenes with David toward the end of the book, but much more often it simply rants about Israel.
If that were the only problem with the book, I'd probably still give it 3 stars. But then there's the writing. The narration leaps, without any apparent rhyme or reason, between first- and third-person, between two different first-person narrators, between past and present tense. (Writing Yousef's POV in first person, present tense was a particularly ill-considered decision, resulting in passages like: "I reach my hand to touch. But he backs away. Later, not now, I am sure that it was not a dream." Got that?) And there's this constant fast-forwarding and rewinding to tell an entire subplot in a paragraph, as if the author's afraid we won't remember some plot element by the time it reappears. And then the narration jumps around and skips over tons of time. (It was cool that Amal and I share an alma mater. It would have been cooler if a single word had been said about her time there.)
In the end, I'm conflicted about this book. I did cry at the end (sucker for dramatic death scenes that I am). There are interesting plot elements; there's a good story in there somewhere. I did learn a bit. I do think there's a lot of truth to what's presented in this book, and that the author could have made her points, and more effectively, without being so heavy-handed. But this just isn't the novel that it could have been.

كم أحب ذلك النوع من الروايات و الكتب القادرة علي تخليد تلك الجروح ، و تلك الذركيات ، تلك الجرائم ، حتي إذا نسي الناس ذكّرتنا بما كان .
تقييمي هنا لكتابة القصة و لطريقة السرد و اما بالنسبة للأحداث المؤلمة الواقعة في كل صفحة فلا يمكن تقييمها بلا شك.
تركت أثرا لن يُنسي أبدا مهما مرت سنين بعد قرائتها.
ثلاثة أجيال من الفلسطينين كل جيل و له بطله الخاص ، يختلفون في الأسماء و الأزمنة و الأماكن ، و يشتركون في نقاء القلوب و شدة مصائبهم .
أكثر ما أثر بي هو الجيل الأول.
لا يمكنني حتي أن أتخيل كم كان شعورهم حين تم تهجيرهم من بيتهم الذي بنوه و احاطوه باشجار الزيتون ، لا أتخيل كيف ردهم عندما القوا لهم خيم مهترئة ، لا أتخيل احساسهم عندما تأكدوا ألا رجوع إلي أرضهم ، لا أعرف كيف صبروا علي التنكيل بهم ، لا أعلم من أين جمعوا تلك الهمة و الشجاعة للقتال أمامهم ، شعور لن يفهمه إلا من حضره و يكفي أن تقرأ تلك الرواية لتلمسك قبسة عما واجهوه.
" عندما غسلت العائلة جثمانه ، وجدوا في كفه ثلاث حبات زيتون ، و وجدوا بعض أكواز التين في جيوبه ، و كست وجهه الميت ابتسامة هادئة وادعة ، و كان ذلك دليلاً للجميع أنه رحل سعيدا إلي الجنة ."

لا تتوقع من الرواية أي حدث ينتهي علي خير و أعتقد بذلك تمكنت الكاتبة في تعداد جميع أنواع المآسي التي مرّ بها أي فرد في فلسطين .
تدور الأحداث في فلسطين و أمريكا و لبنان مرتبطةً بشكل وثيق بأحداث حقيقية في هذا الوقت.
الكاتبة سوزان أبوالهوي و قد وُلدت في القدس و كانت من اللاجئين بعد نكسة 67 و سارفت لأمريكا لتكمل درساتها و أكملت حياتها الي الان هناك , و قد رسمت جانبا كبيرا من حياتها في الرواية في شخصية امال .

تقييمي هنا لكتابة القصة و لطريقة السرد و اما بالنسبة للأحداث المؤلمة الواقعة في كل صفحة فلا يمكن تقييمها بلا شك.
تركت أثرا لن يُنسي أبدا مهما مرت سنين بعد قرائتها.
ثلاثة أجيال من الفلسطينين كل جيل و له بطله الخاص ، يختلفون في الأسماء و الأزمنة و الأماكن ، و يشتركون في نقاء القلوب و شدة مصائبهم .
أكثر ما أثر بي هو الجيل الأول.
لا يمكنني حتي أن أتخيل كم كان شعورهم حين تم تهجيرهم من بيتهم الذي بنوه و احاطوه باشجار الزيتون ، لا أتخيل كيف ردهم عندما القوا لهم خيم مهترئة ، لا أتخيل احساسهم عندما تأكدوا ألا رجوع إلي أرضهم ، لا أعرف كيف صبروا علي التنكيل بهم ، لا أعلم من أين جمعوا تلك الهمة و الشجاعة للقتال أمامهم ، شعور لن يفهمه إلا من حضره و يكفي أن تقرأ تلك الرواية لتلمسك قبسة عما واجهوه.
" عندما غسلت العائلة جثمانه ، وجدوا في كفه ثلاث حبات زيتون ، و وجدوا بعض أكواز التين في جيوبه ، و كست وجهه الميت ابتسامة هادئة وادعة ، و كان ذلك دليلاً للجميع أنه رحل سعيدا إلي الجنة ."

لا تتوقع من الرواية أي حدث ينتهي علي خير و أعتقد بذلك تمكنت الكاتبة في تعداد جميع أنواع المآسي التي مرّ بها أي فرد في فلسطين .
تدور الأحداث في فلسطين و أمريكا و لبنان مرتبطةً بشكل وثيق بأحداث حقيقية في هذا الوقت.
الكاتبة سوزان أبوالهوي و قد وُلدت في القدس و كانت من اللاجئين بعد نكسة 67 و سارفت لأمريكا لتكمل درساتها و أكملت حياتها الي الان هناك , و قد رسمت جانبا كبيرا من حياتها في الرواية في شخصية امال .

تذكر المؤلفة في نهاية الرواية أن شخصيات الرواية خيالية، لكن فلسطين ليست كذلك
أكانت تقصد أن فلسطين ليست كما جاءت في الرواية؟؟
أتمنى لو كان هذا قصدها
فلا وجود لفلسطين هنا
وإن كانت البداية المتحدثة عن القطاف خادعة

بما أن الرواية عالمية، فسأنقل هنا بعض الأفكار التى تعززها الرواية

فلسطين أرض خيرات، مكسب كبير لمحتلها، فقط توجد تلك المشكلة الصغيرة
مخيمات اللاجئين، لكن هذه يمكن التغلب عليها ببعض القذائف

لا وجود لعربي ينصر أخاه، وإن كنا نريد الحفاظ على حياتنا، فلنستنجد بالدول الموالية لإسرائيل

الجنود الإسرائيليون المغتصبون القتلة هم بضعة شباب
أُعطوا السلاح، فأعمتهم السلطة المطلقة
كم هم مساكين هؤلاء الشباب!!

كانت هذه (بعض) الأفكار التى تعززها الرواية وتنقلها الكاتبة للعالم عن فلسطين وشعبها

وبالنظر إلى الجانب الأدبي
فالرواية مفككة
حاولت الكتابة جمع شتاتها مرارا، ونجحت في ذلك
ولكن هذا النجاح أبعد من الخيال
،،
مثال:
آري ذلك اليهودى صديق والدها والذي لم تره آمال قط ولم يكن بينه وبي�� أسرتها أى تواصل
بعد 70 سنة من آخر لقاء له مع والدها
تتبعته آمال عن طريق النت
(لا وإيه توصل لعنوانه كمان ويطلع العنوان صح :D
ده الخيال العلمى أرحم)

كما أن فجوة الفترة التى قضتها آمال في أمريكا، أثرت بشدة في القصة
المفترض أن آمال لها هوية أخرى وتتكافحان لتطغى واحدة على أخرى
لكن ما نراه في الرواية هو جانب واحد للنظر إلي القضية
وهذا الجانب لا تختلف فيه آمال عن من لم يغادر فلسطين قط
،،
الحقيقة أننى وبالاقتراب من نهايتها كنت قد قررت التقييم بنجمتين
حفاظًا على الجهد المبذول الواضح فيها
حتى وصلت لصفحة 429
أقسم أنني لم أصدق عيناي
وقرأت الفقرة مرارًا وتكرارًا لأتأكد مما قرأت
وحين تجاوزت الصدمة وانحرفت بعيني نزولًا أسطرًا قليلة
إذا بلفظ (رئيسنا) يصدمني من جديد
قضي ذلك على البقية الباقية من الرواية في نفسي

I have to admit my ignorance in the continuing turmoil between Israel and Palestine. It seems that it is a conflict that has been going on forever and that many people in the States are at a lose to understand... so we watch the news call them all crazy then go about our live. This novel opened my eyes to this situation and made me sad, but most of all it made me angry. Angry that in a world of mass media and all the technological advances we possess that these atrocities are still going on in many parts of the world. I do understand that this novel is biased in its storytelling but even if only parts of these events are true it's too many. This novel is the perfect example of how fiction has the power to change/inform us and that's why novels like this should be read. I sincerely sympathize and ache for all of the innocent victims of this conflict... A must read.

بكيت كثيراً أثناء قراءتي للرواية .. عشت تفاصيل الحزن مع آمال و يوسف و فاطمة و هدى .. توقفت كثيراً عند وصف جثة الطفلة فلسطين و هي تحدق إلينا بعينين جامدتين تماماً كما تحدق فينا فلسطين "الوطن" منذ احتلالها و حتى اللحظة ..
تألمت كثيراً من مشهد رفض المستوطنة إدخال سارة إلى منزل آبائها بحجة أنه أضحى "ملكنا الآن" .. أية وقاحة يمتلكها هؤلاء اللصوص ؟!
آمال عاشت بخاصرة مشوهة بسبب طلقة قناص ، و الأمة العربية بأسرها تعيش بواقع مشوه بسبب قضية ما زالت معلقة .. أما آن لنا أن نسترد وطننا و ذكرياتنا من قبضة الضياع ؟؟

Re-reading this one for February 2016 sit in Book Club Originally read in 2011.
Isn't it wonderful when a book like Mornings in Jenin inspires readers to discuss, think about or research further for information in order to educate and better understand the conflicts of the world.
Mornings in Jenin is an amazing read and an insight to the lives of the Abulheja family who are an ordinary Palestinian family living just before, during and since the creation of the state of Israel.
For me I had known very little of this period of histroy and felt that this book gives an insight to what ordinary families went through, Having read reviews that the writing is simplistic and I think that this makes the story reach many more people as its a story simply told. I think this book would make an excellent bookclub read as it is a real page turner and unputdownable, it would also make a great discussion book.

أسرة فلسطينية يتم قصف قريتها وترحيلها إلى مخيم اللاجئين في جنين .. وفي طريق ترحيلها تفقد ابنها الرضيع "إسماعيل" الذي اختطفه ضابط إسرائيلي ليكون هدية لزوجته التي حرمت نعمة الإنجاب وليصبح وحيدهما "دافيد".
يشب "يوسف وآمال" شقيقا إسماعيل في المخيم وتمر السنوات وينضم يوسف إلى المقاومة الفليسطينية ويرتحل مع منظمة التحرير الفليسطينية من الأردن إلى لبنان ثم إلى تونس .. أما آمال فتحصل على منحة دراسية لدخول الجامعة في أمريكا حيث تتم دراستها وتستقر بها.
وهكذا يفرق بين الأشقاء الثلاثة الزمان والمكان والهوية .. فهل تجمعهم الأيام بعد الفراق؟ وهل تضمهم ربوع فلسطين مرة أخرى؟

I'm speechless. For non-Palestinians, it's important to read this novel since it summarizes the story of Palestine - the story of great love and great loss-.
For Palestinians, it's good though painful to see our miseries put into words.
May I can write about some points of this outstanding novel ,later.

I suppose this is a type of book that will get some people's panties in a twist, so let me say a couple things.
1. Never, ever, listen to just one side of the story. There needs to be fiction told from the Palestinian point of view just as there needs to be fiction told from the Israeli point of view.
2. Who wants just to read books that don't challenge them?
3. It really isn't biased.
Okay, had to say that.
Mornings in Jenin is actually a surprising good novel. It also is amazingly compelling. I don't say this because of the subject matter, but because of the style. I don't usually like it when writers tell and do not show. Abulhawa does this for large sections of the novel, and this is part of the reason why I gave the book four stars and not five. The style does not, however, fully get in the way of the story. I read the book in a day, and literally could not put it down for the last 150 pages. Abulhawa switches points of view, so it isn't always telling. Additionally, she could be drawing on a Palestinian (or Arab or Middle Eastern) tradition that I'm not familiar with. The other two, almost minor, flaws in the novel are that some of plot "twists" aren't really twists, and to be fair, Abulhawa doesn't seem to expect them to be. I also felt that the style in about 50 pages of the book felt more like a lecture (but I can understand why). The other flaw is that the love between the main character, Amal, and her husband does not seem as real or even as believable as the love Amal's brother has with his wife. Those passages are some of the most beautiful in the novel.
Those three "flaws" aside, the book is very, very good. What is most impressive is the even handed tone that Abulhawa takes. It's true, the Israelis are the villains here. But, Hello, it's written from a Palestinian viewpoint. What Abulhawa should get full credit for is the case for peace and understanding this book makes. The book ends, in part, with a marvelous and poignant image. Large sections of the book are about loss, not just the loss of life and place, but the loss of friendship and of family. Amal's father, for instance, had a friendship with a Jewish settler, and we see the effect of the conflict on this friendship. Abulhawa also makes nice use of the theme of Moses. Abulhawa doesn't usually judge for the reader; she lets the reader judge. She trusts her storytelling, and she respects the reader. She doesn’t worry about what the reader’s viewpoint prior to reading the novel might be. Instead, Abulhawa stays focuses on the story, and her themes, one of which is how violence begets violence; another is understanding.
I'm glad Bloomsbury published this book, and I'm sorry that I missed this book when it was published by a small press.

I'm ashamed to say I knew little on the Israel / Palestine conflict at the time of reading this and this book is a good introduction to the topic especially if you prefer to learn about this topic in a fictional narrative.
This is the story of Amal who was born into a refugee camp in Jenin. It's horrifying to know this story is not fiction for many people out there today.
This book is not enjoyable but definitely should be read.

Ono sto je knjiga "Lovac na zmajeve" bila za Avganistance to je ova knjiga za Palestince. Svi znamo za stradanja Jevreja i stvaranje Izraela a manje su nam poznata stranja Palestinaca koje su Jevreji isterali sa njihovih ognjišta i pretvorili ih u izbeglice i stradalnike... Ovo je priča o malim ljudima i njihovim tragičnim sudbinama...

Palestine/Israel: Personal vs. Structural
Preamble:
--With the recent escalation of the conflict and its genocidal consequences, many comrades here shifted to learn more about the topic, ranging from the more well-known The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonial Conquest and Resistance, 1917-2017 (2020) to the more niche Palestine: A Socialist Introduction (2020).
--I was planning my own approach, which would also start with nonfiction to build the big picture (structural) analyses/critiques:
i) Re-trace back to earlier influences like Chomsky, who synthesizes so much material: Fateful Triangle: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinians (1982) and On Palestine (2015)
ii) …which leads to Ilan Pappé: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006) and Ten Myths About Israel (2017), along with other notable critics like Norman G. Finkelstein (The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering, 2000), Edward W. Said (The Question of Palestine, 1979), etc.
--That’s when “What is Politics” released their first video episode on the topic called 12: From “Never Again” to “There are No Uninvolved Civilians” - the ABCs of Israel/Palestine.
--“What is Politics” takes the next steps of analyzing each opposing framing directly from their sources:
a) pro-Palestine: the aforementioned The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonial Conquest and Resistance, 1917-2017 (2020), etc.
b) pro-Israel: Reclaiming Israel's History: Roots, Rights, and the Struggle for Peace (2017); former Israeli PM Golda Meir’s A Land of Our Own: An Oral Autobiography (1973), etc.
c) other (pro-nationalist): Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist-Arab Conflict, 1881-2001 (1999); A History of Zionism (1972), etc.
…“What is Politics” focuses on critiquing nationalism as a tool weaponized by elites on every side to cover up class conflicts (including opportunities for class-conscious solidarity) that threaten their rule. I’d like this synthesized with more sympathetic analysis of anti-colonial nationalism like Vijay Prashad’s The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World.
--Note: “elites on every side”, beyond Arab/Jew: the critical view that sources I respect all seem to agree on is “The Jewish Question” was a European problem (specifically European elites using Jews as scapegoats to distract from their own class conflicts) exported to the so-called “Middle East” (Eurocentric term) along with “nation states” from Europe's inter-imperialist rivalries/wars (WWI, WWII) carving up the world with artificial national borders for imperialist powers.
-see Chomksy on Christian Zionism: why the US supports Israel
--Finally, a reference to the documentary Encounter Point stood out; this portrayal of a “Bereaved Families Forum” dialogue group between Palestinians and Israelis who have lost loved ones suggests that:
a) Forgiving personal grievances (even under such extreme circumstances), thus overcoming social group identities in the process, is possible through direct human interactions.
b) However, such direct human interactions still have difficulties even discussing differences in political/historical narratives (i.e. understanding of structural analysis).
…I need some time to really unpack the implications of this. “What is Politics” references the following on social group identities, as well as critical anthropology:
-Human Groups and Social Categories: Studies in Social Psychology (1981)
-Social Groups And Identities (1998)
Highlights:
--As I started to stew over how people engage with social group identities and political/historical narratives (in particular the communication challenges), I decided to go off my normal path and read a well-known fiction.
--I first heard of the Palestinian novelist Susan Abulhawa in the collection Will the Flower Slip Through the Asphalt: Writers Respond to Capitalist Climate Change, which features some of my absolute favourites:
i) Vijay Prashad: The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World
ii) Naomi Klein: The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
iii) Amitav Ghosh: Sea of Poppies
…so, you can imagine how impressed I was that Abulhawa’s essay stood out.
--Coincidentally, this book features a nonfiction reference list that is almost identical to my nonfiction plan, featuring Chomksy/Finkelstein/Said, as well as Robert Fisk, etc.
--I’m not a fiction connoisseur; besides from a baseline of readability (this book was obviously a smooth read), I’m looking for fiction which offer me interesting scenarios for thought-experiments which can (eventually) be applied to the real world. Sometimes, I may take these in different directions away from the author’s nonfiction intentions (ex. Lord of the Flies).
--A character worth highlighting is the Palestinian-born, Israeli-raised David; the interactions involving David reminds me of relations with personal grievances:
Preamble:
--With the recent escalation of the conflict and its genocidal consequences, many comrades here shifted to learn more about the topic, ranging from the more well-known The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonial Conquest and Resistance, 1917-2017 (2020) to the more niche Palestine: A Socialist Introduction (2020).
--I was planning my own approach, which would also start with nonfiction to build the big picture (structural) analyses/critiques:
i) Re-trace back to earlier influences like Chomsky, who synthesizes so much material: Fateful Triangle: The United States, Israel, and the Palestinians (1982) and On Palestine (2015)
ii) …which leads to Ilan Pappé: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine (2006) and Ten Myths About Israel (2017), along with other notable critics like Norman G. Finkelstein (The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering, 2000), Edward W. Said (The Question of Palestine, 1979), etc.
--That’s when “What is Politics” released their first video episode on the topic called 12: From “Never Again” to “There are No Uninvolved Civilians” - the ABCs of Israel/Palestine.
--“What is Politics” takes the next steps of analyzing each opposing framing directly from their sources:
a) pro-Palestine: the aforementioned The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonial Conquest and Resistance, 1917-2017 (2020), etc.
b) pro-Israel: Reclaiming Israel's History: Roots, Rights, and the Struggle for Peace (2017); former Israeli PM Golda Meir’s A Land of Our Own: An Oral Autobiography (1973), etc.
c) other (pro-nationalist): Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist-Arab Conflict, 1881-2001 (1999); A History of Zionism (1972), etc.
…“What is Politics” focuses on critiquing nationalism as a tool weaponized by elites on every side to cover up class conflicts (including opportunities for class-conscious solidarity) that threaten their rule. I’d like this synthesized with more sympathetic analysis of anti-colonial nationalism like Vijay Prashad’s The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World.
--Note: “elites on every side”, beyond Arab/Jew: the critical view that sources I respect all seem to agree on is “The Jewish Question” was a European problem (specifically European elites using Jews as scapegoats to distract from their own class conflicts) exported to the so-called “Middle East” (Eurocentric term) along with “nation states” from Europe's inter-imperialist rivalries/wars (WWI, WWII) carving up the world with artificial national borders for imperialist powers.
-see Chomksy on Christian Zionism: why the US supports Israel
--Finally, a reference to the documentary Encounter Point stood out; this portrayal of a “Bereaved Families Forum” dialogue group between Palestinians and Israelis who have lost loved ones suggests that:
a) Forgiving personal grievances (even under such extreme circumstances), thus overcoming social group identities in the process, is possible through direct human interactions.
b) However, such direct human interactions still have difficulties even discussing differences in political/historical narratives (i.e. understanding of structural analysis).
…I need some time to really unpack the implications of this. “What is Politics” references the following on social group identities, as well as critical anthropology:
-Human Groups and Social Categories: Studies in Social Psychology (1981)
-Social Groups And Identities (1998)
Highlights:
--As I started to stew over how people engage with social group identities and political/historical narratives (in particular the communication challenges), I decided to go off my normal path and read a well-known fiction.
--I first heard of the Palestinian novelist Susan Abulhawa in the collection Will the Flower Slip Through the Asphalt: Writers Respond to Capitalist Climate Change, which features some of my absolute favourites:
i) Vijay Prashad: The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World
ii) Naomi Klein: The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
iii) Amitav Ghosh: Sea of Poppies
…so, you can imagine how impressed I was that Abulhawa’s essay stood out.
--Coincidentally, this book features a nonfiction reference list that is almost identical to my nonfiction plan, featuring Chomksy/Finkelstein/Said, as well as Robert Fisk, etc.

David lowered his eyes and tried to explain the urge of power to impose itself for the sake of imposition. The elixir of unopposed force and the daredevil thrill of impunity.--This passage reminds me of the construction of nationalism:
“There is no reason or logic. I was twenty years old and they gave me total power over other human beings […] Rage and the impunity I knew I had throbbed in my arms when I was holding the rifle.”
They repulsed attacks and called for a truce, wanting only to live on their land as they always had. For they had endured many masters—Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Ottomans, British—and nationalism was inconsequential. Attachment to God, land, and family was the core of their being and that is what they defended and sought to keep.…In terms of big picture analysis, I still need to rely on my nonfiction approach. As for questions on people engage with political/historical narratives, nonfiction once again may stir more connections with this story…

ويخيل لي أن الكاتبة سوزان أبوالهوى قد استلت قلمها من صخور يعبد، مداده زيت زيتون فلسطين، والبهاء الذهبي لقبة الصخرة والأسود الغامض لقبة الاقصى، والسحر المقدس لكنيسة القيامة والنور الساطع من قبر المسيح -عليه السلام- في سبت النور
نقاط حروفها هي إما زهر اللوز أو الرصاصات التي تسرق منا الحياة وتقتل الحب والإنسان
والمترجمة موفقة ومحترفة، أدعي أنها معربة، لاتشعر بالفرق الكبير بين النسخة المترجمة والنص الأصل الإنجليزي، طبعا النص الاصلي يبقى الأفضل لأنه يحمل أنفاس الكاتبة

من عمليات التهجير والمجازر في عين حوض في ١٩٤٨، إلى النكسة في ١٩٦٧، إلى مجزرة صبرا وشاتيلا في لبنان في ١٩٨٢، مرورًا بالانتفاضة الأولى في ١٩٨٧ والانتفاضة الثانية في ٢٠٠٠، وصولاً لمجزرة مخيم جنين في ٢٠٠٢..!! يا الهي، كم هائل من الألم والوجع ما حوته صفحات هذه الرواية!
قد تكون تكررت مشاهد القتل والتهجير الذي تعرض له الفلسطينيون في كثير من الأعمال الأدبية التي تناولت هذا الموضوع؛ لكن دائمًا هناك من القصص التي ما تزال تحز القلب والتي تبكي عليها العيون بسخاء.
بكيت كثيرًا في رواية الطنطورية، باب الشمس، أولاد الجيتو اسمي آدم. كانت تفاصيل المجازر موجعة. في رواية بينما ينام العالم، وجدت أن هذه القصص لا تزال قادرة على حزِّ قلبي، وأنه مهما تناولت الأعمال الأدبية ما حصل وما يحصل للفلسطينيين، لا يزال لدى الفلسطيني ما يرويه عن هذا التاريخ الذي يقسم ظهر القلب.
كان الألم حارقًا عندما ماتت عائشة ذات الثلاثة أشهر بشظية في بطنها بين يدي إبنة خالتها آمال في مخيم جنين في حفرة في المطبخ؛ ذلك الملجأ الذي ظنت داليا أم آمال أنه سيحمي الطفلات الصغيرات من نيران نكسة ١٩٦٧؛ ذلك التاريخ الذي بدأ يأكل داليا من الداخل، حتى غابت عن الدنيا.
عندما شُقَّ بطن فاطمة وهي حامل في طفلها الثاني في مخيم شاتيلا، لا تزال تأكل وجهي عيونها المرتعدة خوفًا ببطنها المشقوق؛ آخر النظرات التي بقيت على وجهها، مرميةً خلفها طفلتها البكر فلسطين والتي نُحر عنقها.
عصرتُ قلبي عندما قتلت قناصة جندي إسرائيلي آمال في مخيم جنين؛ حامية بجسدها حياة ابنتها سارة، و عندما هدمت الجرافة الاسرائيلية بيت الحاج سالم ودُفن حيًا تحت أنقاض بيته في مخيم جنين.
التاريخ الفلسطيني دائماً ما تحدده مجزرة، أو حرب، أو اقتلاع. هذا النمط في حضور التاريخ الفلسطيني، يذكرني بحوار خضته مع صديق أمريكي خلال فترة إقامتي في أمريكا؛ حيث كنت الفلسطينية الأولى التي يتعرف بها شخصياً. عندما كنتُ أتحدث وإياه عن فلسطين، كنت أذكر هذه التواريخ وبما يرتبط بكل منها: بمجزرة، أو تهجير، أو اقتلاع. لا شعوريًا أقول له في سنة كذا، حدث كذا، وهذا بدوره أوصلنا لكذا.
لا أزال أذكر علامات الدهشة على وجهه عندما قال لي كم هو غريب كيف أن تاريخ بلدك مرتبط بتواريخ محددة، وكل تاريخ يحمل تفاصيل مجزرة أو حرب، والتي تشكل معالم قضيتك كفلسطينية. في تلك اللحظة، شعرت أنه بدأ يفهم نوعًا ما، ما الذي يعنيه أن تكون فلسطينياً، وتحمل وطنك في جيوب قلبكَ أينما ارتحلت!

بينما ينام العالم..
حيث يغطّ الجميع في سبات عميق؛ لا يتخلله صحو، أو حتى مجرد حلم ضبابي عمّا يجري هناك في زواية من العالم؛ لا تهدأ ولا تنام..
هناك؛ حيث يتكاثف ضباب ناريّ، وينمو حزن ضاري، وتتصاعد زفرات حارّة، وتتبخر أحلام وحيوات، ويجثم الموت حيث ينبغي أن تكون هناك حياة!
هناك؛ حيث الجراح لا تندمل، والآلام لا تكف عن رغبتها المحمومة في أن تسعى لتكون آمالاً رغم كل شىء..
هناك حيث الصمود، والشرف، والكرامة، والعزة؛ كلمات لم يعد يعرفها العالم، ولكنها ترعرعت هناك ونضجت ولاحقت النائمين في نومهم رغماً عنهم!
هناك، حيث تتأخذ المعاني مضموناً أعمق، وتتشكل الصور الحقيقية لتعبر عمّا تعجز الكلمات عنه ولن تبلغه يوماً..
هناك حيث الموت لا يعني الموت وإنّما استشهاد..
والحياة هي وجهٌ آخر للموت!
"وهل للكلمات أن تلغي ضخامة الحياة والموت، لتقربهما الواحد من نقيضه إلى هذة الدرجة؟!"
هناك فلسطين!
حيث كل القوة، والألم، كل الصمود، والصلابة!
حيث كل ما لن يعرفه العالم إلا من هناك..
وهنا بين سطور هذا العمل الأدبي البالغ الجمال والحزن..
صورة من هناك، حيث لم تتخيل يوماً أن تراه، أو أن تكون قريباً منه لهذا الحد..
وحينما تقترب في مجرد سطور، ستتضاءل قدرتك على المواجهة، وتتكاثف الدموع، ويتعاظم الألم
ستعرف أن من هناك هم أبطال من فولاذ! صناديد لن تهدها الحرب ولا تسلب حريتها أشباه قوى..
وهذا سيعريك! وسيعزيّك في آن!
سيعريك عندما تعرف أنك لم تقو على قراءة بعيدة كل البعد عن مواطن الأحداث..
وسيعزيّك لأن من هم كذلك لهم العزة والغلبة مهما كانت كل الموازين تشهد بخلاف ذلك!
لكن يكفيك أن تقترب بهذة الدرجة لتبكي كما لم تبكي من قبل،
لتطهر روحك، ولترى..
من زاوية إنسانية بديعة بليغة وفائقة الشفافية تعكس لك صورة واحدة فقط من هناك..
