A Western tale turned on its ear and filled with strange characters and surreal situations. PUBLICATION IN 7 VOLUMES - COMPLETED SERIES. From what could only have originated from the mind of El Topo director, and The Metabarons author, Alexandro Jodorowsky, Bouncer follows the adventures of a one armed gunslinger and sometimes saloon bouncer in one of the Wild West's many dangerous and vice-infested towns. Drawn by acclaimed artist François Boucq in a gritty and realistic style.
Better known for his surreal films El Topo and The Holy Mountain filmed in the early 1970s, Alejandro Jodorowsky is also an accomplished writer of graphic novels and a psychotherapist. He developed Psychomagic, a combination of psychotherapy and shamanic magic. His fans have included John Lennon and Marilyn Manson.
The sixth book in the series, and the first in the final story arc, which will be completed with the next volume. Jodorowsky here delivers one of his best scripts for the whole series, involving both characters development and several strong female characters, a rarity in Jodorowsky's oeuvre, making this the first volume I considered giving four stars. Still no chance of it passing the Bechdel test, though, so three stars it is.
There's closure to several themes that's been running for a while in this series, but also a raising of the stakes for the main character, so it's evident that Jodorowsky is building up to the final crescendo in the seventh volume. But he also introduces several new characters and gives us several really good action scenes in this, the penultimate volume.
As always, Boucq consistently delivers really good looking art; precise and realistic, yet with a personal touch. I still prefer his own, often surrealistic comics to the pretentious scrips by Jodorowsky, but Boucq's art saves this series from being merely mediocre Western fare.
