I started out confused but things did make sense as I kept reading. After the confusing the story really took off. Nora Deviis a great character and I loved meeting her. Captain Liam Kimani is in disgrace and out on the border. He and Nora meet briefly as both arrive on station. Then things happen and they are thrown together as the plot thickens. Great start to a new series. Looking forward to book 2.

The subtitle of this series is a little misleading. Although the heroine is trained as a xeno-archaeologist, that's not what she does. She flies around the galaxy in her one-person ship mapping space and occasionally testing for exploitable resources. Something happened to her in her earlier life -- partly this was the death of her husband, but I think there was more to it -- that left her angry and generally distrustful of other people.
