The Walking Dead is the best work of fiction dealing with zombies I've ever experienced. Kirkman has developed an amazing story centered around a diverse group of characters. It's not about the cheap scares or gore of zombies that is seen a lot in other fiction, it's about the characters and how they change over time. It's a difficult thing waiting every week for a new issue to be released.

In fact George A Romero claims he was inspired to create the zombie from the creatures in Richard Matheson's I am Legend. I have read the novel and it is my favourite horror novel of all time. The novel is accredited in part creation of the zombie genre. So if you want to thank anybody for creating the zombie genre. You have to thank both Romero and Metheson.

It is considered one of the greatest post apocalyptic horror novels ever written. It was also the first novel ever depict vapirism as a virus. Dracula created the vampire genre but Matheson's novel is the next greatest vampire novel ever written. It paved the way for other great novels decades later such as Salem's lot.

I recommend I am Legend for anyone. It's an amazing novel of solidarity and horror. an abosulte masterpiece.

I am Legend is as much about zombies as 28 Days Later. It's a generic term these days that includes undead, living dead, and terminally/homocidally infected.

By the way, Voyage of the Dead is FREE today on Amazon and near the top of the charts. I hope it floats your boat.

Identity Theft is a page turner, and it is a unique and very creative addition to the genre. You don't have to read the first book in the series to enjoy this one, but you will be very glad if you do. Both books are memorable- both gripping and interesting.

The world is dead: people, animals and vegetation. The main character is a cop (dead) who hunts the living and whose father was a famous hunter of the living.
Society is normal (and dead) with cities and cars etc

Not really. Undead is a fairly generic term, but zombie isn't generic at all, and this is not an "Undead" list. But where did you get the idea that it includes terminally/homicidally infected? The first two parts of your definition is correct, the last is not; the infected horde has to be actually dead to qualify as zombies.

This is about books, not their movie counterparts, and if you've read I Am Legend, you know that the book specifically is about vampires. Even if it were true that zombie were a generic term as you claim, it still wouldn't be accurate to say that a book about vampires belongs on a reading list for zombie fiction. Matheson's book is not appropriate to this list.

In other words, the infection drove them insane and made them BELIEVE they were vampires.

True, to a point. They don't exhibit "vampire-like" symptoms--they behave like vampires, period. The MC surmises that the reason they react to holy symbols is due to psychological conditioning from cultural beliefs about vampires, but the blood drinking and sunlight issues are real, not a delusional belief.

They act like vampires, they think they are vampires, the MC calls them vampires, and names the virus the changes them after the word vampire. It's a book about vampires, not zombies.
