The town of Politoburg, a satellite-like town is a lonely place where hearts come to die and hope fades quicker than innocence. The trade push is prostitution and strong arm tactics; for pimps and revellers, a haven of sorts, for those bound to the town limits, a hell as hot at the Mexican desert.
Despite the bleak environment, a demented love story spawns through Ramone and his cast of Maria's (female prostitutes). Horribly beaten, Ramone's physical injuries coincide with the Maria's inner scars. Together they form an uprising to break the shackles of their respective confinement only to roam the desert seeking solace in the blood of men who take advantage of the fairer sex.
Jedidiah Ayres manages to portray a deep and wholly satisfying tale which reads more like a full length than novella. The writing is crisp and concise; not a word out of place, nor scene unwarranted. The sense of atmosphere is unmistakable, Ayres consumes the reader wholeheartedly, I couldn't help but get lost amongst the escapades of Ramone and co., the gringo escape, double cross, and the unforgiving landscape which dominates the story.
The style and substance echoes the darkest corners of Quentin Tarantino's mind; an exploitation of the genre so raw and bloody it's sure to become an underground cult classic. Jedidiah Ayres proves with FIERCE BITCHES that noir has a new prince; readers rejoice for a new dawn of dark fiction is slowly descending upon us.
The cinematic beauty amongst the brutality leads me to think an adaptation to graphic novel would be perfect. In fact, as I read FIERCE BITCHES I couldn't help but picture the story in a Vertigo-Crime-like viewfinder. Here's hoping.

BATTLE ROYALE is overtly violent, graphic, bloody and utterly terrifying. For 42 school kids aged around 15, an ill fated bus ride leads them to their grave; participants in the latest Government controlled ‘Program’. Placed on an island with one simple instruction ‘kill to win’. With only 1 winner allowable, it takes no time for the bodies to start piling up.
Commonly compared to HUNGER GAMES, more so for the inspiration rather than exact copycat, BATTLE ROYALE is more contained with isolation the key to its horrors. There isn’t an emphasis on entertainment, rather a pure unadulterated evil cast by a corrupt and cruel Government. The plot doesn’t deviate too much from the simple survival horror genre with only momentary glimpses of a broader design mentioned (re Shinji’s aim).
BATTLE ROYLE, despite having a cast of 43 (42 student (equal parts male and female) and a sadistic Program operative), managed to be well rounded and surprising deep towards the characterisation of the school kids pitted against one another until their death. However, 5 characters come to mind, with both Shuya and Noriko the central protagonists and semi love interest (for which much of the story revolves), Shogo, a bad guy misunderstood, Mitsuko, a beauty with a past born of abuse and a body put to work to fatten her purse (previously) and chance of survival (seductive techniques against the weaker minded males), and Zakuo, a fierce and emotionally depraved young man who’s only goal is to cut down as many classmates as possible.
In amongst the gore lays a couple of budding love stories, used more as coping mechanisms by the teens rather than serious encounters of the heart. In typical teen fashion, some characters express and discuss their potential love interests during their downtime when in hiding from others. I thought the corny adolescent love obsession was justified insofar as it portrayed the school kids in a manner true to their age rather than the simpleminded violent psychopaths the ‘Program’ wanted them to be. Takami’s approach to instil the sense of youthful hope over the senseless abandonment of life throughout the death match provided a soft contrast to the hard and bloody story.
The edition I read contained a forward by one of my favourite authors in Max Allan Collins who discussed the reason for the movie adaptation’s less than mainstream distribution while the end extras include a discussion with the film’s director and an interesting conversation with the author, Koushun Takami.
BATTLE ROYALE is a must read for any book lover, particularly those who enjoy the darker side of fiction. Absolutely fantastic – 5 stars.
The opening sequence of DOUBLE DEXTER reads as good as any purist noir written. It’s moody, evocative, harrowing, and dark with a sense of foreboding and dread – a calm before the perfect storm. The opening chapter ties in nicely with Dexter's Dark Passenger persona. In fact, the opening sequences are so good that I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Cornell Woolrich (vastly different authors yet sharing the same thematic quality early in this Dexter novel). Yet, this being dutiful domestic bliss Dexter of book 6 – the overtly dark natured opening wasn’t going to last – and it didn’t.
The plot is simple enough, though it did feel as though Lindsay changed direction mid stream. While centered around Dexter and the mysterious Witness to his favorite pastime, DOUBLE DEXTER is also a police procedural; someone is murdering cops in a painful and torturous manner – crushing every bone until the victim dies. The investigation led by Dexter’s sister naturally dabbled into Dexter’s dark side to catch a killer. Stopping short of a full blown manhunt, Lindsay employs a quick-fix to the case only to focus on Dexter assuming the role of a PI in search of his Witness or ‘Double’ as touted on the blurb.
DOUBLE DEXTER provides glimpses into life as a serial killer and that of a devoted husband and loving father. Dexter is in disguise for a large portion of the novel – only once or twice relishing in his darker persona. The interactions with series regulars do little to further the plot or overarching series for that matter, as DOUBLE DEXTER is more about what is going on inside Dexter’s head than those actions around him. The cat and mouse routine, while enjoyable and easy to read is formulaic with nothing really earth shattering happening.
Dexter is a very strong and well defined character and that portrayal continues in DOUBLE DEXTER. Fans of the series will enjoy this, while those new will want to give it a miss. 3 stars – a good thriller which had a fantastic start only to fall into the trapping of a generic thriller.

The tale of kidnapping, jewel heist, murder, and gang rivalry is engrossing and utterly captivating. Not once did this oh so sweet slice of noir feel dated despite the initial publication being in 1939 – a testament to the authors ability.
Ma Grisson and her son Slim are the catalysts in turning a snatch and grab into mass murder and a show of force in taking complete control of the criminal underworld. Miss Blandish, a wealthy daughter and socialite-like young women with the world at her feet is the unfortunately collateral damage in a heist designed to bring in a million dollars to a group of thugs looking to hit the big time. Before long, Ma Grisson and her gang are privy to the snatch, take out the competitors and hold Miss Blandish captive for a king’s ransom.
There are some truly unique and well formulated characters in NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH, perhaps none more so than the larger than life and menacing Ma Grission. Everything from her physical description to utter contempt of human life oozes noir and shouts crime boss – a formidable figure indeed. While her son Slim, is equally degenerative in the humanity stakes, his infatuation and desire for someone to call his own – preferably an attractive wealthy woman portrays in him a scary and semi psychotic state. I could elaborate further on the distinguished cast as they all add something to the plot and are enjoyable and realistic in their respective occupation.
NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDISH is written in a manner to keep the perspective fresh. Each new chapter (act) sees the POV switch from heist, to kidnap, to police investigation, to private eye, to criminal element, to Miss Blandish herself. This was the perfect way to convey the dire situation Miss Blandish and her criminal counterparts found themselves.
Given the linear plot, engaging characters and quality of writing and you’ve got a sure fire classic by James Hadley Chase. I couldn’t get through NO ORCHIDS FOR MISS BLANDHISH fast enough – one of the best noirs ever written and a true classic of crime fiction – 5 stars.
HUNTER, the follow-up to the first in the INTREPID series, DEFENDER, is just as action packed as its predecessor. This time round, Intrepid agent AlexHUNTER, the follow-up to the first in the INTREPID series, DEFENDER, is just as action packed as its predecessor. This time round, Intrepid agent Alex Morgan dons more of a police/investigator persona in search of kidnapped star Charly. Further enhancing his mission is that Charly, not only a famous pianist, is also the goddaughter of Morgan's boss, Davenport and the daughter of a prominent ICTY judge heading up a complex trial to put away a bunch of dangerous war criminals.
Comparisons between Bond and Morgan are easily apparent yet Morgan has more of a hardened blue blooded edge - think Shane Schofield (aka Scarecrow) by Aussie author Matthew Reilly. Author Chris Allen continues to build on Morgan by bumping up the Aussie bloke angle, incorporating more of the mannerisms typical of the stereotype. This creates a more realistic feel to Morgan, making him come across as a good-hearted, honest and reliable down-to-earth character. In a way, the perfect compliment to the ruthless bad guys.
Wolves in sheep clothing, a Serbian mafia inner circle power struggle, double crosses by informants and Interpol agents alike, all formulate the latest Intrepid novel which sees conflict traverses the globe via one long high octane action sequence which incorporates brutal hand to hand and elaborate stunts. I made the comment in DEFENDER that it was like a big budget Hollywood blockbuster and this is no different, the combat scenes are delivered in efficient brutality, the stunts akin to the finest Bond.
With HUNTER there is a noticeable focus on character development with Morgan's boss Davenport growing into a more fatherly role and a clear sense of camaraderie evident between the two. Some major players from DEFENDER, notably Arena Hall are less prominent in HUNTER yet this is offset by the introduction new characters, with the most impressionable being Key (Messrs Braunschweiger), a man mountain who looms as a larger than life agent and fast friend of Morgan's.
HUNTER is a must read for fans of the series. The action is first class. The writing precise and the plot wholly enjoyable throughout. Chris Allen is onto a winner with Intrepid - 4 stars. ...more

SO WHAT KILLED THE VAMPIRE is pure pulp from beginning to end. Despite being formulaic, it's still entertaining and driven by mystery. The whodunit aspect alone is worth the price of admission.
Carter Brown takes aim at b-grade horror, detailing some of the genre's traits in colourful jest. I liked the light hearted approach to this mystery which complimented Larry Baker - a guy who is hard to take serious in any event.

In James and Cora Bevan, Goodis creates a pair of dysfunctional lovers tainted by their past and victimised by their future. For James, the consummate alcoholic, the amber liquid serves as a means to rid the reminders that hold true his reality; a hopeless sense of foreboding, crippling depression, a sham of a marriage to an almost trophy wife without perk, and a need to experiment in self obliteration. For Cora, her past dictates her every movement, life is one great horror movie, every man hides behind sinister and dirty motives, ones the threaten to soil her very core.
Goodis writes the alcoholic induced protagonist to perfection. Much like STREET OF NO RETURN, the vice provides the key to the leads chemical make-up, building character (for good and bad) and driving the sordid tale.
Set amongst contrasting locales in Jamaica, THE WOUNDED AND THE SLAIN provides equal billing to the desirable and undesirable alike. The slums are without hope, an emotionally desolate place of structures where criminality is commonplace - whereas the fine hotel where the Bevan’s are situated is all tourist guide perfection – sunshine and a healthy lifestyle. This does well to enhance the Bevan’s facade’, a circle that doesn’t fit inside a square.
I’ve read THE WOUNDED AND THE SLAIN twice now and am still drawn to the raw feeling of depression and complex nature of the Bevan’s. As a couple and as individuals they are hopelessly flawed yet both provide glimpses of redeeming qualities as the story progresses, all it takes is a little blood and the realisation of a harsh truth.

Like any Carter Brown novel and dime-store novel of the pulp era, the depiction of female leads borders on soft porn. Whether it’s through their garment shedding occupation in shady nightclubs or a brief description of an office receptionist upon her arrival at work the overt and unashamed objectification of their physical attributes conjures imagines of curvaceous and willing young women placed in front of the male character in similar fashion to a serving of red meat. Bear in mind, in Carter Brown novels this perception of a female lead as eye candy is generally a smoke and mirrors tactic with that same character developing into a pivotal piece of the story.
THE COLD DARK HOURS is grounded and perhaps driven by the female leads in Lavinia Sloan (wife of Electronics GM Jason) and Peggy Bush (Keith’s personal secretary). Both are vastly different characters from one another and surprisingly rich in back-story and characterisation. Lavinia is the picture perfect housewife stuck inside a broken frame; a model for her executive husband with a secret past that’s far from glamorous. While Peggy is a distraction of the good kind for Keith, the central character and P.R man at the front of THE COLD DARK HOURS, a young woman with ambition, drive, and willingness to do whatever it takes to make a name for herself in the world of public relations.
I couldn't help but think of the TV series MADMEN while reading THE COLD DARK HOURS; similar concepts, similar era, similar male business executives and women secretaries true to the stereotype. The plot revolves around a failed television set and the company’s (Electronics) attempts to change the public’s perception of their product through crafty advertising and public relations. Keith Kirkland, recently returned home to Sydney from New York is thrown in at the deep end, forced to disregard his workmates and adopt a ‘take charge’ attitude to turn the company fortune around. Despite many of his co-workers being displeased with Keith’s sudden rise in the P.R ranks, he manages to establish loyalty, but not before encountering some drama along the way.
A.G. Yates pays homage to the old adage ‘what comes around goes around’. Keith’s rise to prominence is not without fall. It’s interesting to read Keith as a ‘yes man’ only to see his staff eventually assume the role once his stake in the company is realized. I thought A.G. Yates pulled this role reversal off beautifully. There is a lot of humanity to THE COLD DARK HOURS and the take on 1950’s office etiquette which I found enjoyable and insightful in comparison to the present day.

Something that should have been swept under the rug of ill justice turns Royal Commission. For Swann, an outcast of the force he once gave his all, the mere suggestion of corruption provokes a series of events which leave him fearing for his life and those he holds dear.
The disappearance of Swann's daughter coupled the murder investigation (or lack thereof) of brothel Madame Ruby Devine proves to be more sinister with rumors of the police being responsible for both incidents. Swann, portrayed as the epitome of justice in Australia's 1970's version of the Wild West, battles professional and personal conflicts on all fronts as he seeks justice.
Author David Whish-Wilson does a great job at fusing the two dynamics into a single, distinctly underworld crime that captures the period perfectly, casting a darker shade of noir without remorse on 1970's Western Australia.
Despite assistance from some acquaintances, Swann acts as a lone wolf seeking answers where many find blood and ill fated half truths. His persistence, and underdog status captures the reader's imagination and heart. You can't help but barrack for this guy. Adding to the seemingly helpless crusade, Whish-Wilson creates layers of depth to the protagonist by establishing a less than perfect family life, unethical yet justified policing in prior posts (Kalgoorlie), and damning character traits that serve to prove Swann's humanity more so than highlighting any inadequacies.
LINE OF SIGHT is as noir as Australian fiction gets. While the bleak plot leaves little room for the Hollywood sunshine and rainbows ending, it does promote a realism that's hard to swallow - such is life. Prostitution, murder, corruption (political and police), drugs, scams, and organised crime formulate the backbone of the story, yet the characters carry the load and are bound to remain embedded in my mind for a time to come.

ODD APOCALYPSE is a novel of nightmares, the most 'adult horror' to feature Odd Thomas yet. The latest instalment breathes a breath of rancid air to the series, sure to fear and induce night terrors. Koontz' creations share some similarities with the conceptual monsters of 77 SHADOW STREET - perhaps not in likeness but purpose. The emphasis on the grotesque masquerading as plausible beings brings a new dimension to Odd's gift and broadens his influence as dictated by him being drawn to unearthly spirits in need.
There is a distinct episodic feel to the Odd Thomas novels, with ODD APOCALYPSE sufficing as a stand-alone pit stop for Odd in a similar fashion to the Odd Interludes (think of the format behind the DEAD MAN novellas). That said, Koontz makes many references to the first book in ODD THOMAS and subsequent events that take place through to ODD HOURS. This added a real sense of continuity that I thought missing from ODD HOURS, however, Koontz seemed to have completely ignored the events of the Odd Interludes - I kept wondering where the super AI computer was, the assistance of which, in Odd's latest drama would've been well received in my opinion.
ODD APOCALYPSE maintains the mystery behind the omnipresent pregnant Annamaria, a plain yet spellbinding young woman who speaks in tongues and riddles while conveying infinite wisdom. Despite Annamaria having a lesser presence in ODD APOCALYPSE I was pleased with her portrayal and happy that Koontz maintained the allure and mystery surrounding her character.
The place-setting is one dimensional (on face value that is) - a mansion set upon a vast land sectioned off by a wall. Roseland is not you're average house of horrors for Koontz blends a mixture of the paranormal, supernatural and sci-fi into the waking nightmare Odd and Annamaria find themselves. The idea borrows elements from many books (including Koontz' own catalogue) but concocts them so well as to feel original and as harrowing as any I've read (re: The Freaks especially).
ODD APOCALYPSE is brimming with action and tension - something that perhaps the previous instalments (the later ones, that is) have missed. It also serves well to further define Odd and brings the horror back in a big way. This is a welcome return to the series and brings new hope for further instalments to maintain the quality. The dialogue is still Odd (overtly polite) yet Koontz isn't afraid to cast a shadow here and there to give more of a edge - all round, ODD APOCALYPSE is a decent, almost 'refresher' of the series that's entertaining all way through. 3.5 stars. ...more

Thrust into back-to-back missions, Morgan’s introduction is nothing short of fierce and quickly establishes the character as a hardened military vet with a penchant for justice underlined by an ability to carry out mission objectives without preservation for self.
The action sequences are intense; described in a manner which completely eradicates the world around you and places you inside the fictional landscape scared by the atrocities of war and moulded by intelligence agency corruption.
A mission to Malfajiri uncovers a harsh reality in a spy gone rogue - vicious killer Victor Lundt. Morgan, having lost a friend and fellow operative in Sean Collins via a gruesome death at the hands of a torturous group has to swallow his personal vendetta in favour of serving a greater good. Amidst the chaos of battle, an evacuation delivers a cinematic display of modern warfare and ground tactics yet through Arena Halls (under the guise of a Red Cross worker), author Chris Allen uncovers a semblance of beauty in the face of brutality.
It’s the professional relationship between Arena and Morgan that sets the tone for the remainder of the novel. The chemistry between doesn’t feel forced or without cause. As an operative in her own right, Arena is far from the damsel in distress, in fact Allen goes to great lengths to switch the script by reversing the roles with Arena just as capable as Morgan albeit a little less intimidating than the soldier.
DEFENDER is a multi-layered action thriller which encompasses all the hallmarks of a Hollywood big budget blockbuster. What separates it apart from the contenders is the down to earth Morgan and complex web of lies and half truths spun by the intelligence agencies. Knowing who to trust throughout this story will keep you on your toes.
DEFENDER is a great start to what promises to be an exciting series. The foundation of heroes is laid, the agency administrators established, and background formulated for a number of interesting characters.
The sequel HUNTER: INTREPID 2 is available in December 2012 and I, for one, can’t wait. INTREPID 1 gets 4.5 stars from me. ...more

Aric’s warrior nature and thirst for battle are well established and lay the foundation for his eventual capture aboard a Vine colony ship.
The Armour of Shanhara – the X-O Manowar suit, cherished by the priests aboard the space ship chooses it’s beholder – time and time again mighty Vine warriors succumb to a painful death upon donning the powerful armour. Aric, a slave , treated little more than cattle orchestrates a plan to rise up against his captures which ultimately leads him to the armour. Of the four issues that comprise BY THE SWORD, the opening 3 are the best. I liked the space opera feel aboard the Vine colony ship and look forward to reading more along these lines in the third arc PLANET DEATH (which follows the very good second arc ENTER NINJAK which I bought as individual comics).
While the Vine have some interesting characters, this title is really all about Aric (for this edition anyway). As a result the reader gets to become familiar with the character and is able to feel for his misplacement (some sixteen centuries post his abduction – time has a different meaning in deep space).
Though I have some time to wait until PLANET DEATH is released as a collected trade edition, BY THE SWORD easily caters to my space opera need.
I’ve got to say, the aesthetics of X-O MANOWARD VOL.1: BY THE SWORD is one of the most pleasing I’ve come across in recent times. The issues are separated by their original covers, a heap of information and timeline are provided at the beginning of the book and the extras contain images of alterative covers, listings of other Valiant collections and a blurb of VOL.2 ENTER NINJAK.
Given the ever expanding Valiant interconnected universe, this title has a tone of re-read appeal. Bring on PLANET DEATH – I can’t wait to read more of the Vine on their home turf. 4 stars.

HARD BITE is laced with satire and dark humour likened to other Blasted Heath titles, notably Douglas Lindsay's Barney Thomson series - despite the murderous plot, Anonymous-9 keeps the laughs and lighter moments rolling along. I didn't know whether to cringe when Sid went in for the 'hard bite' or laugh at the overall outlandish concept - great stuff.
Not your typical portrait of a serial killer, Dean Drayhart is wheelchair bound and uses a unique accomplice to carry out his killings. In a twisted way, Dean gets some redemption with every kill of a hit and run driver, slowly accounting for his predicament courtesy of a hit and run which not only caused his loss of movement but also cost him his family.
HARD BITE really comes to the boil when it's discovered one of Drayhart's victims has strong ties to a Mexican drug cartel. Soon he encounters bullets, a scornful mother, and the police in an all out action packed story that's entertaining all the way through.
The characters are superb, from Drayhart and Sid, to Drayhart's nurse Maric Blattlatch and prostitute girlfriend Cinda. Cop Doug provides a glimpse at the police procedural aspect to the hunt while the Mexican drug cartel add an element of noir to this fun pulpy caper.
Anonymous-9, Dave Zeltserman (Julius Katz mystery series), and Duane Swierczynski (Charlie Hardie trilogy) are leading the new era of modern pulp which could well turn into the second coming of the genres golden age. I wonder who's the better sidekick (albeit from opposite sides of the law); Sid from HARD BITE or Archie from JULIUS KATZ AND ARCHIE? Perhaps we need to see more of Sid before deciding.
HARD BITE gets 5 stars for me.
Side note: I love books that have covers relevant to the actual story, not just a cut and pasted images set amongst a generic backdrop. HARD BITE's cover has got to be one of the best this year.

DARK CITY BLUE squashes the safety blanket-like public and policing perception by using this as a means of defining a central corrupt body of lawmakers and turning them into first class criminals. Protagonist, Bishop, a hard-man who’s shed more blood than tears is an honest cop in a world where disloyalty is rewarded. Not the type to turn a blind eye, he embarks on a one man mission to bring down a deeply entrenched seed of criminal activity right in the backyard of the boys in the blue.
Preston wastes no time in thrusting the reader face first into the action. From the opening scene Bishop is confronted with the underage sex trade, shotguns, and dead bodies. The high octane, noir on no-doze feel to DARK CITY BLUE doesn’t let up with Bishop piecing the broken bits of a blood encrusted puzzle one shard at a time over the course of a number of violent encounters with the law and lawless alike.
Bishop’s motive is fuelled by rage, derived through the clouded eyes of a dying, abused child, in Chloe. A captive against her will serving as no more than a means to fatten the pockets of the elusive entity known as ‘Justice’. As the body bag is zipped up, darkening the youthful body within, so does Bishops mood and determination. Throughout the course of the novel, moments exist where Bishop could walk, turn to IA, or act alone as a vigilante – luckily for the reader; he decides to go at it alone. Following the deathly whispers of ‘Justice’, Bishop learns of police involvement in a heist worth 15mil and other heinous crimes that threaten to tear apart the already thin fabric that holds the police department together.
Fellow officers, judges, commanders, criminals, snitches, undercover agents, and best friends all come scrutiny as Bishop kicks tail and takes names on the path to the truth. DARK CITY BLUE is delivered in a frenetic pace, while this had the potential to overshadow the novels protagonist, Preston still manages to establish a deep and painful back-story amongst the bullets and blood. It’s easy to see how Bishop can evolve into a serious series character. One can’t help but think the complexity of his character unearthed in DARK CITY BLUE is but the tip of the iceberg.

'Kiss or Kill' got off to a great start with issues #6 and #7 really hitting the spot (excluding the ending of #7 where super villains Fantasma and uber robot Crimson Dynamo make an appearance - it served only to derail the Bond-like plot and feel of Swierczynki's 'Black Widow' and make it more kid super hero and bad guy). The story was full of espionage, intrigue, mystery and two femme fatales in Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff and Fatale battling it out to secure the target in Nick Crane - son to a recently deceased senator who's on the hunt for answers and the mystery woman at the forefront of a possible sex scandal prior to his fathers death.
Had the plot been hatched and collected over more instalments than this arc delivered, 'Kiss or Kill' could've really been something. However, after issue #8 the story was left incomplete and with more questions than answers. 'Kiss or Kill' doesn't read or feel like a complete book. Adding to the cobbled arc is the tacked on tale featuring Iron Man. Not only was this a deviation from the theme of the Black Widow comics collected here but wasn't all that enjoyable to read.
I'm rating this a 3 for the following: the concept of Black Widow in this particular setting was well executed. The battle aboard a speeding train between Black Widow and Crimson Dynamo was pure action - both story and art conveyed the mood perfectly, the two fatales with a common goal was entertaining and left me wanting more, and the pacing overall was good across the three Black Widow instalments. The downfall lies in the unfinished story, Iron Man segment and the overall feeling of being cheated - as I mentioned earlier, 'Kiss or Kill' left me with more questions than answers. ...more

Apart from being set in the same world as its predecessor, THE TWELVE reads as an entirely different book conceptually. The virals and humanity's struggle to thrive in a limited existence was bound to evolve, yet it may have been to the detriment of all that Cronin had achieved in THE PASSAGE.
Where THE PASSAGE excelled in elements of survival horror, post apocalyptic dread, horrific creatures and a truly depressing and desperate setting, THE TWELVE is more thriller, action, almost special ops orientated. This approach, while decent in its own right, paled in comparison to the THE PASSAGE. I was hoping for something that followed up from THE PASSAGE, something that picked up the bloodied pieces of the shocking conclusion and maintained the same horror of the first instalment.
THE TWELVE in turn, focuses more on the human dynamic and less on the virals themselves. Amy, the mysterious thirteenth test subject becomes something much more than an everlasting, slow ageing viral cousin so to speak. Her story is one of the highlights, along with the expanded sub plot given to Alicia Donadio.
You could easily be excused for thinking THE TWELVE was written by Stephen King. All the hallmarks of a popular King horror are paramount through Cronin's THE TWELVE. Characters are given ample time to develop, past and present conflicts morph as one, the slow burning plot cruises along leisurely at times taking a back seat to dialogue or less critical narrative, and the overall feel is very in tune with Kings craft.
If not for THE PASSAGE, THE TWELVE would read much better. That said, THE PASSAGE is essential in defining the world and establishing the core characters. As much as I enjoyed THE TWELVE, I couldn't help but think it would've been much better if had resembled THE PASSAGE more. The ending has me counting down the days until the third book is released though my thirst isn't that of when THE PASSAGE concluded. 3 stars.

Goodis views race riots, alcoholism, murder, police corruption and a deep seeded longing for a better place all through a tainted glass beer bottle. Whitey, a bum amongst bums, is mistaken for a murderer after trying to aide a felled police officer in a dark alleyway. His trip to the station house brings insight into the world around him. Danger and breathing go hand in hand. The world is not a nice place and the boys in blue have a hidden agenda.
I was surprised at how complex Goodis made 'Street Of No Return'. Not only did he maintain an interesting plot set in the present but also enveloped the reader in the past - a time when Whitey wasn't a street dweller and his clothes not insect infested. Even more interesting to read is how that past, and a women named Celia impact on the race riots happening around him in the present tense.
'Street Of No Return' is a fast paced crime novel - set primary at night to hold true to the noir theme. The protagonist is a helpless drunk, the good guys are bad, the bad guys are bad and the riots are only the tip of a much larger and deadlier iceberg. The speed at which the story is delivered is not without its filler content with some passages coming across as dialogue heavey and perhaps unwarrented.
The only thing that really holds 'Street Of No Return' back is the typical Goodis internal dialogue by which the character has a tendency to over think a situation and analyse every possible move and outcome. Some of this introspection detracted from the story at hand - which is a shame as the plot itself was excellent. That aside, I really enjoyed 'Street Of No Return' and have no hesitation is saying that this will be a future re-read. 4 stars.
On face value, ‘The Robbers’ looks to be a typical crime tale written by an author well versed in crime fictions true-to-life counterpart. However, the façade is quickly diminished once the pages get turning. By in large, ‘The Robbers’ is noir; the protagonists are tainted, a law unto themselves, a band of brothers with a slightly skewed moral compass, their means justify the end. Some are family men, others glorified hounds yet they all serve a common purpose – clean the street of its scum by any means necessary.
“Think footy and you think Brereton, Dipper, Rhys-Jones and Lockett. The real hard c#nts … Think Victoria Police and you think The Robbers. We still shirtfront the bad blokes.”
This line sure gets my literary senses tingling - words direct from our own brand of Aussie noir. The members that comprise the elite Armed Robbery Squad are diverse, deep, and not afraid to go against the grain. There's something that invokes a sense of hero worship and desire to see them conquer all despite overwhelming odds against. From common criminals to IA to politicians, The Robbers are battling the world for the greater good. Sure their means are unconventional but then sometimes it takes violence to end violence.
Unofficial member, journalist Ian Malone adds another dimension to the group. His motive and means a constant question throughout the novel. Initially a carbon copy character lifted from a main stream crime, Anderson quickly establishes Malone as someone who has a police mentality hardened by a past many would kill to forget. Of all the colourful and interesting characters that caress the pages of THE ROBBERS, it's Malone that tops my list.
The Free Dictionary online (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/noir) describes noir as “of or relating to a genre of crime literature featuring tough, cynical characters and bleak settings” and is “suggestive of danger or violence”. Anderson nails this definition - split knuckles, bloodied streets, and brutal bashings are commonplace. Readers emotions will run high and low as they laugh, cry, hate and love right alongside The Robbers.
Colourful characters, distinct Australian dialogue, and Aussie Rules references - this is a book purpose built for blokes and fans of crime fiction who like their stories dark and on the rougher side of life. 5 stars.

Beukes creates a world teaming with real world comparisons separated by unique twists of the fantastical. The plot, once established, is pretty straight forward and conforms to the typical PI case format comprising a series of interviews, background digging, violent encounters etc as the protagonist, Zinzi December, and her sloth source the target.
Having previously used her talents on trinkets or minor items of significance to their owners, the PI gig is a step into the unknown. Odi Huron, by way of an eccentric couple who specialise in ‘procurement’, hires Zinzi to locate a missing female musician, Songweza, seen as a good girl idol for the youth – using non-traditional techniques (PI’s, cops) to keep the disappearance out of the tabloids.
One of the best scenes is separate to the core investigation itself, rather Zinzi’s battle against some thugs in the Johannesburg storm drains. It’s dark, wet and brimming with tensions and an overwhelming sense of foreboding. More of this would’ve added a much grittier undertone to the novel.
The later stages of the novel uncover sinister motives and the drafting of magic concoctions formulated by macabre means that shocks and infuriates Zinzi (and all Animalled sympathisers alike). Linked to her investigation, she winds up in the jaws of death as the case takes a turn for the worse. The fusion of PI theatrics and wild animal rage results in a truly epic conclusion which for the most part is the novel’s highlight.
The intermissions provide a glimpse at the fantastical world and the concept of the ‘Animalled’ and the alternate universe of Beukes’ creation. These deviations from the story are greatly beneficial in establishing context to the environment and enhance the overall believability of the concept.
ZOO CITY is an interesting concept, a semi sleuth with a sloth attached to her…anyone who commits a crime is forced to ‘partner-up’ with an animal which cannot leave their side. It is set in South Africa but the place setting is very much inner city American ghetto. Living in Zoo City, a kind of quarantine for the destitute criminal accompanies all the vices typical in an urban ghetto-like sprawl in prostitution, gang activity, scams (though these are run by Zinzi herself), violence, and corruption. I thought Beukes did a great job at merging reality with fiction – nothing felt forced or entirely unbelievable.
In summary: Was a little hard to get into, but worth persisting - 3.5 stars. ...more

The outer limits serve as an oasis for the populace - a place to live, flourish, and thrive. Despite the shiny veneer and overseas promo hype lies a very different Australia. One where the hopelessness and hardness of the desert meets the bikini clad million dollar smiles of advertising. Grit meets girt by sea and no amount of water can wash away the dirt. 'Hard Labour', the all Australian crime anthology exemplifies this in a similar yet uniquely down-under way. Language as colourful as its characters, plots as sharp as its knife wielding crims - from tales of outback horror, traitorous hit men, MMA fighting, and cults, to not so common thieves, there is a little something here for everyone.
The anthology gets off to a great start with the first short story featuring Wyatt, Disher's own Aussie version of Parker (by Richard Stark) - the thief who's more common man than hard criminal. In 'Wyatt's Art', Wyatt faces a cross continent smuggling ring involving more than the product he's pushing. I liken this to 'Parker-lite' - the criminal element is there, however Wyatt is more of a thinking thief as apposed to violent hard man. Next up was 'Grassed' by Leigh Redhead (better known for her Simone Kirsch PI series) in which a physically mature 14yr old girl, Ananda is the object of 38yr Kyle's affection. This love story ends before it begins, only it's bones that break, not hearts. It was good to read something a little different by Redhead . 'Grassed' for me was on of the highlights of this collection.
The good thing about this anthology is the diversity in storytelling. 'Killing Peacocks' by Angela Savage writes a about a rural town where domestic violence extends its bloody tendrils to peacocks to cover a murder. The culprit, a petite package of innocence with lethal intentions uses her assets to reel in a scapegoat. 'The Town' by Cameron Ashley, and 'No Through Road' by Greig Johnston couldn't be more different, one looks at alcoholic squatters, the other gives new meaning to the term 'criminally insane'. I really liked Johnston's story, it was quick, precise and laced with dark humour. The lead criminal uses a sawed off antique shotgun for a robbery to net a measly score only to find out the shotgun he ruined was a collectable worth upwards of $10,000. Criminal masterminds at their best - not.
'Hard Labour' enlists some well known names in crime fiction in Helen FitzGerlad ('Killing Mum'), Adrian McKinty ('The Dutch Book'), and Peter Corris ('Prodigal Son') amongst others. While each of these stories were entertaining, McKinty's 'The Dutch Book' was the strongest and most involving. Written so well that it felt like a full length. In 'The Dutch Book' McKinty pits a small time collector against the organisation for the purpose of financial gain only to see friends, girlfriend and family safety net dwindle away. 'Prodigal Son' was the only true PI story in 'Hard Labour' and rounds out the anthology well while 'Killing Mum' was depressing, sober, and a glimpse at age old age no one wants to see.
To compliment the well known authors, a talented bunch of lesser knowns provides a glimpse at the future of Australian crime fiction. JJ Decegile's 'Death Cannot Be Delegated' is about an introspective compulsive gambler who is swayed by the allure of his targets provocative manner (oh and nakedness). The hit man switches allegiance in favour of a better deal. Quick, efficient and brutal. 'The Break' by Andrew Prentice is about a former cop charged with assault following a citizens arrest. The characters were well developed with the short story reading more as an opening chapter to a novel. I sure hope Prentice explores this further. 'A Forgiving Kind Of Nature' by Amanda Wrangles was surprisingly deep for a short story - I want more!
There are many highlights to 'Hard Labour', 'Underhooks' by Liam Jose had a semi 'Choke Hold' (by Christa Faust) feel to it yet was more raw, brutal and entertaining. I would love to see this fleshed out to a full length. A former mixed martial arts athlete is forced back into the ring following a stint in prison for killing a competitor. Cage fighting, sex on bloodied matts and hard hitting storytelling. 'Chasing Atlantis' by Andrew Nette (author of Ghost Money) contains cults, double crosses, murder, a hot dame, and thievery. One of the best. Rounding out my favourites is 'Dead Fellow Churls' by Andrez Bergen in which a drunk cop gets caught on a stake-out and has to rely on his partner, there is a distinct femme fatale feel to this. Like 'The Break', 'Dead Fellow Churls' felt like a novel teaser rather than short story - left me wanting more.
Much like any anthology there are good and average stories depending on the reader tastes. Luckily most of the shorts in 'Hard Labour' hit the mark. Crime Factory have served up a well rounded and diverse entree of Australian crime fiction which has left me craving a main course. I look forward to tracking down the Wyatt series by Disher, reading 'Ghost Money' by Andrew Nette and getting stuck into the novels by Andrez Bergen ('Tobacco-Stained Mountain Goat'). My wishlist has grown by a few books thanks to 'Hard Labour'. This is a satisfying collection not to be missed - 4 stars. ...more
