I absolutely adored this book and it’s become one of my favorite books of all time. I’ve never been a huge fan of romance but lately that’s changed significantly and this book has everything that I never knew I liked in romance. Not to mention how Sarah Maclean proved that consent is sexy as hell during every single one of her sex scenes.
But I think I’m jumping the gun here.
Everything I liked:
—amazing mythology and religious references and one of the best Hades/Persephone retellings I’ve ever read —continuous literary references that made my little nerd heart so so happy —CONSENT —Penelope Marbury, one of the strongest heroines I’ve ever read (coming from the pov of a former epic fantasy reader) —the noticeable shift from the third person narration referring to the hero as Bourne to Michael, a name that only Penelope ever calls him by —the writing was absolutely fantastic, Sarah Maclean moved through the dual third person pov with ease and made sure to distinguish the narrative voices which is something I’ve noticed some HR authors have trouble with —Cross, the absolute love of my life (and Pippa ofc)
What I didn’t like:
—Michael/Bourne. This is kind of controversial I think, from the couple of reviews I’ve read people seem to adore him, but that’s the problem. I didn’t hate him or actively dislike him in any way, but I didn’t find him swoon worthy. I thought the sex scenes were really well-written and love how he explicitly asked her for consent and if Penelope was okay. That’s not what I mean by swoon-worthy. I mean, I found him to be lackluster. His characterization was good, don’t get me wrong, but he isn’t my favorite hero of all time. —Big proclamations of love. Now, I suspect this is something I’ll find in countless other HR novels and something that I have to get used to, but I’ve never been a big fan of that moment at the end of a book or movie where there’s this huge proclamation where someone inevitably uses the words, “I choose you. I choose love.” But I think this might be a tad nitpicky on my part.
I’m really looking forward to the next book, I expect to love it because Cross truly stole the show for me in this book. Also, I can’t be the only one that sees a resemblance between him and George Mackay, can I?...more

but either way, in lieu of a detailed review raving about the intricacies of this novel, i would just like to say that i had no idea sally rooney was married and now it all makes all the sense and none of the sense....more
