I do know a woman whose entire family was murdered in Amin’s Uganda.
I ran into a friend a few days ago who watched the movie. I’m glad I read the book instead. I’m not a fan of visual brutality and I’m sure there was plenty.
The book is quite good. I’d hate to be caught in that trap!!...more

This first person account of his life with the Apaches by Herman Lehmann was very well told. It really gave me a feeling of what it would be like to be taken in by the tribe, to be cared for by them - and what it would take to return to “civilization” after 9 years. If this interests you, this is a nice addition to your reading list. ...more

But - I do like a good true crime story, and this certainly was a good one.

I’d just finished Griffin Dunne’s book and that story was very, very similar to this one so I just skimmed it. I was going to set it aside - most of this book is about the OJ trial - but the writing is so good, and the name dropping so much fun, that I found myself engrossed.
I don’t have a clue who some of the people are but the stories were fun - so now I’m “in the know”. ...more

I think that if this is a genre you like you’ll be pleased with Book Lovers - and probably all Emily Henry books. I found it predictable and very easy. Restful, even with all of the character’s angst because I knew how it would end. I think that’s the point - and it was done very well. But again, not for me. No stars because it’s not at all fair for me to give a low rating to a good book just because it’s not my thing. It might be yours. ...more

When I began this (audio)book I thought that I would lose track of it because it jumps around from POV to POV quite quickly. (In print this may be easier to follow. I don’t know) It turns out that this wasn’t a problem. As the book progressed I became so familiar with each person’s experiences that it flowed pretty seamlessly. The topics of martyrdom and politics, fathers, mothers, and uncles, airplanes shot from the skies. These were all deftly woven into the story. The Death-Speak sequences in the museum with ‘O’s (audio, not sure of the spelling) stage 4 breast cancer were close to home… I recommend it but be sure to have your thinking cap close by. This one needs a bit of concentration. ...more

I’d never heard of the awful rape and murder of Debbie Carter but I thought that such a popular author as Grisham would do a great job. No. He spent so much time on the minutia of Williamson and Fritz’s young lives that it dragged.
The fact that they were convicted, Williamson sentenced to death, reminded me of another book I just read (Devil’s Knot by Mara Leveritt) where the police, prosecutors and judge were so blatantly wrong, and would still pursue the innocent men even after release that I feel like my faith in justice in the US is shot.
So - decent book, but the treatment of a brutal and sad crime was made boring to me. ...more
