An encouragement to ground, be, notice, find the particular, don’t always abstract and try and find meaning and purpose. To notice how something other, something creative, something even resurrective breaks in.

As a person of faith myself, thinking through the worldview presented in this story that is very different from my own. Robots are created with a human purpose that enslaves the robots, they break free and the humans respect their autonomy and let them live as they wish. The result is better for both humans and robots.
In this story, one human and one robot meet to understand each other. Human is wrestling with their purpose, robot gives the advice: just exist. Don’t be bound up with your purpose. You’re free to choose without constraints like you gave us the gift.
Religious/cosmic purpose in this world is at best constraining, giving angst about getting it right, and at worst enslaving. I get the critique of the weight placed by religious expectation to find the purpose of the creator. I see the benefit of just existing, living, finding value in what you are interested in. But I can’t go all the way to where this perspective takes us. ...more
