This will probably conclude my big Dune jamboree of 2024 as I look to read other series and sink my teeth into other worlds. However, my time with Frank Herbert's universe has been eye opening to what is possible with world building. This is a book and series where form follows function to an extreme extent. Yes, it is science- fiction so of course things will not be a reflection of the exact state of our reality. Yet, one of things that strikes me about Dune is how Herbert described the series as a work of "prediction" and tried to make certain things about the series as realistic as possible. The prediction was a wide array of themes on human nature and how they play out in a grand, societal scale. This is why the form follows function, because Herbert explores these themes as accurately as possible to human nature, pre-established lore, and his existential social ideas which leads to some of the weirdness like tank and worm men. The series has been engrossingly intriguing and instilled an interest in literature in me that I will cherish for some time....more

It really did seem like this book was made to subvert expectations from the first one and really drive home some of the real themes that Frank Herbert was trying to portray in the original. Messiah feels like an extended appendix for the first book rather than a true sequel and is much more introspective and philosophical, and weird. Those are certainly not negatives, and it fits within the narrative that Herbert was trying to craft. ...more
