Autoarea nu oferă informații revoluționare. Rezumă lucruri știute, cercetări recente și dovezi anecdotice. Totuși, cineva care a ignorat complet domeniul nutriției până acum poate afla lucruri noi. Recomandările autoarei sunt de bun-simț: consumă mai multe legume (și acum știu de care), mai multe proteine și mai puțini carbohidrați, consumă-le într-o anumită ordine, evită zahărul (dacă poți) sau consumă-l după o masă echilibrată, fă mișcare după ce mănânci etc. Dacă nu te poți ține de ele de fiecare dată, nu e nicio problemă, important e să încerci. Fii atent la cum te simți după ce mănânci ca să înveți semnalele pe care ți le trimite organismul. Nu merge la cumpărături pe stomacul gol. Chestii de genul.
În fine, nu trebuie să adopți tot ce zice autoarea, nu trebuie să te transformi într-un fanatic și să urmezi un regim draconic. Fă ceea ce pare ok pentru tine.
Cartea se citește ușor. Autoarea adoptă un stil (exagerat de) prietenos, gen influencer care vorbește cu fanii, uneori iritant, dar de înțeles. Apar multe grafice, unele chiar redundante, de la un punct. Cu puțin noroc, o dai gata în câteva ore....more

It wasn’t that. It begins like that, telling the reader that crowds and groups have more wisdom than the total sum of its members and that good decisions do indeed come out, with the condition that these crowds are diverse and representative to society. The examples are good in illustrating the point. But it then goes deeper into how the markets work, how people trade in stocks and stuff like this. I got bored and all those pages were just narrowly touching the main point. It did not make me more hopeful or optimistic about the democratic process, it did not restore my faith in humanity, in society’s ability to arrive at good conclusions and decisions. Even if a group of uninformed people can, without any prior knowledge, guess the weight of an ox or the location of a sunken submarine (guess these as a group, not individually), I doubt this wisdom can go further to complex issues like politics, government, science and so on. It is easy to average what people think about the number of marbles in a jar, harder when it comes to rights, health, the way their country should be governed. Starts well and then derails. ...more

The part about himself is very brief (I would actually want to read his complete biography, written in detail) and the part about the future of our planet and what can we do reads almost as the conclusion/recommendation part of a climate report.
I admire his optimism. I wish I could say I share it. He identified dozens of things that can be done, but the problem is that in order to reverse the damage and stop before reaching the tipping point, all the solutions he suggest need to be implemented concomitantly, now, and that will never happen. Unless nature finds a way to reverse the damage done by humans, we are doomed, because we are way too reliant on politicians and they move way too slow. We also like confort and convenience....more

Eroii aveau nume diferite, dar acțiunile și încercările prin care trebuiau să treacă erau asemănătoare. Căutasem la vremea respectivă, fără succes, vreun studiu comparat din care să aflu originea lor comună.
Am găsit acum studiul lui Joseph Campbell (aparent a fost publicat prima dată prin 1944). Vorbește, în mare parte, despre ce mă interesa pe mine. Practic nu există o origine comună. Din cauza că oamenii sunt asemănători, legendele și mitologiile au evoluat cam în același fel. Dacă există o sămânța care a stat la baza lor, atunci ea vine de la omul preistoric. Structura aventurii unui erou conține, aproape fără cale de abatere, câteva etape clasice: separarea, inițierea, întoarcerea. Între povești și mituri, diferența nu este foarte mare. Dacă eroul din basme obține o victorie familiară, cu care se poate identifica oricine, cel din mituri dobândește una istorică. Primul, de obicei mezinul sau copilul mai puțin iubit, își învinge dușmanii personali și reușește să-și demonstreze calitățile în fața familiei sau a comunității, în timp ce al doilea aduce înapoi mijloacele prin care societatea se va regenera în totalitatea sa. Fie că e vorba de Harap-Alb sau de Buddha, călătoria trece prin aceleași etape, deși la scară diferită (și cu miză diferită).
Toate astea le-am aflat încă din prolog. Restul cărții e doar o ilustrare pe larg a etapelor. Pentru a-și susține punctul de vedere, Campbell oferă o mulțime de exemple, din tot atâtea culturi și tradiții. Uneori m-a pierdut pe drum cu prea multe povești, unele prea lungi, citate in extenso, mult peste cât ar fi fost nevoie pentru susținerea argumentului. Nu mi-a plăcut că deseori se pierde în psihanaliză, citând din Freud și Jung, fără ca ăsta să fie neapărat obiectivul cercetării. Argumentul lui este că în vis, în subconștient, întâlnim mitologia. Nu știu dacă mitologia se naște din noi sau noi suntem influențați într-atât de mit încât îl păstrăm mereu în interiorul nostru.
Mi-a plăcut în special ultimul capitol, în care autorul face o comparație între trecut și prezent, între individul care trebuie să ia calea eroului și societatea de astăzi în care grupul e mai presus decât individul.

Din 180 de pagini, probabil doar vreo 100 au text pe ele. Iar textul ar putea fi comprimat lejer în vreo 50.

The author comes off as arrongant, annoying, too smart for his own good and alienating to his readers. The pages are filled with useless autobiography, countless redundant examples, witty remarks and filler paragraphs as if a target page count was set beforehand. Two thirds of the text could have been easily stripped. In the end you are left wondering if the idea has any merit to it at all and if your time wasn't wasted completely.
