This is pretty brutal for a middlegrade novel, but it's also full of heart and hope. Millie and Rose were both very different and have very different ways of coping with what's happening to them, which was interesting to read and I think will help middlegrade readers understand that people respond to similar situations differently and that's okay. I absolutely loved the Lost Boys, particularly Ben, and the story became so much more hopeful once Millie and Rose met them.
This isn't quite 5 stars for me, though, because I was honestly expecting a little more from this. I felt like the ending was a little rushed, and this book didn't do much that felt inventive to me - I feel like it's a fairly standard post-apocalyptic story....more

I also loved seeing Addie at a younger age, with Keedie and her family figuring out she's autistic too....more

Noah is a very loveable main character, and she really took me back to how I felt at her age. At first I was afraid there would be a lot of friendship drama, or maybe even friendship breakups, but I was so glad to see the friends working through things and their friendship group expanding instead....more

This series is so special to me and has been such a huge comfort to me. It's funny and emotional in equal measure and has amazing queer and disabled rep. This installment introduces Meredith, Dara's cousin, who's autistic like Vivi and also has EDS, and I LOVE her. Plus of course I want my own Gelert....more

This was such a lovely one, about Anna/Lei going on a quest on Hawaii and learning to embrace her culture and heritage. I do wish we'd seen more of her best friend - I get that her quest to save him means we wouldn't be able to see him much, but I just liked him so much as a character that I would have loved to see a little more from him. Otherwise this is super cute and fun!...more

This story is adorable and hilarious in equal measures, and I would love to read the second installment as well!...more

I liked both main characters, but I felt like I got to know Linus a lot better throughout the book, and he just felt more fleshed out. I gave Skating on Mars 3 stars too, so maybe Caroline Huntoon's books aren't entirely for me, which is absolutely fine since I'm not the target audience. I would absolutely recommend this to kids who want to read about trans main characters!...more

Initially, she's stealth, but she's forced to come out and gets kicked off the cheer team, which is very upsetting to her as cheer is her new-found passion and it's making her really happy. This leads to her advocating for herself more and more, with support from her family, friends, and an organization that supports queer and trans youth.
This was such an empowering read that gives a lot of insight in the state of trans rights in the US in a way that feels suitable for a middlegrade book. I'm always impressed when middlegrade books keep a good balance between heavy topics, in this case transphobia, and the love, support and warmth that kids need. This book didn't gloss over anything and it felt very honest, but it also showed how many supportive people there are who outweigh the bad....more
