Fantastic, heartbreaking retelling of Homer's The Illiad (The Trojan War) and The Odyssey told through the perspective of the female Gods and Humans. Fantastic, heartbreaking retelling of Homer's The Illiad (The Trojan War) and The Odyssey told through the perspective of the female Gods and Humans.
So many great quotes (no spoilers):
From Calliope (Muse of Epic poetry): "I'm offering him (Homer) the story of all the women in the war. Well, most of them. I haven't decided about Helen yet. She gets on my nerves." LOL.
From Penelope (Queen of Ithaca) in letter to Odysseus (King of Ithaca): "My dearest husband ten long years since you sailed from Ithaca to join Agamemnon....in their noble quest to bring back Helen from Troy.......How many moons can it take to track down an unfaithful wife, after all."
From Penelope: "But no one sings of the courage required by those of us who were left behind."
And some of the final quotes from Calliope: "I have picked up the old stories and I have shaken them until the hidden women appear in plain sight. I have celebrated them in song because they have waited long enough......A war does not ignore half the people whose lives it touches. So why do we?.....Sing, Muse he said. Well, do you hear me? I have sung."
I've actually read very little mythology so I definitely used the internet to help me remember the Gods and their place in these stories. An emotional read; highly recommend....more
