I waffle between 3 and 4 stars because it was hella meta listening to him narrate his own memoir, but it was amplified the motif of being a default performer.
Idk if I enjoyed this as much as I could have, but I’m also not the target audience so I set this book up for failure before I even started it. I do think there was a lot of thought provoking points in here though - and I’d say it set me up for some interesting book-club-esque convos. So I think it deserves points for that.
Crazy thing is I’m a huge fan of Will Smith and his whole family. So I don’t regret reading this at all, but besides the cover, I don’t think there was anything epic about it. ...more

This was a great book specifically addressing the overlap of ethics and law, so I didn't expect a whole lot of variation from the major five topics: Insurance, Organizations, Reproduction, Organs, and Death.
It was also really accessible which is awesome because the language in a lot of these ethicolegal texts are so convoluted that it requires a PhD just to get through the Intro. I love a good vocab, but I feel like these sort of texts benefit the most when more people can understand and engage with the matter.
That being said, there's like no citations (!!!) and the sections are broken up in a strange way (-_-). Maybe it's because I'm not a lawyer and I wasn't the target audience, but again, it goes back to the issue of accessibility. I think maybe they could have slimmed this down and set out the parts into their own individual texts and that would have maybe fleshed out the flow issues, but the whole point of the nutshell series is to be comprehensive so this is just a preferential complaint and not one that marred my experience in digesting the text. ...more

Eventually that tone loses its impact when you binge each of the essays like a novel (instead of like a collection, as intended). But I also realized I'm perhaps a bit too familiar with Singer's work already so a lot of this wasn't surprising to me. Plus, I quite literally misled myself.
It's BRIEF essays.
For EVERYDAY life.
I shouldn't have gone into this looking for a textbook. It did what it said and Singer is a charming writer with rather unique and devastating thoughts. I especially liked the intro about how he considers his most impactful work to be that which is read widely (aka OpEds) and it makes sense for this collection to be written and accessible in the way that it is.
It is good work, just not what I expected going in (but that's my fault)....more

I really enjoyed that the audio utilized different narrators when playing out an excerpt of No Exit! I would recommend it to anyone who wants a refresher in distinguishing Sartre in their mind, but I'm not sure how much of a help it would be to those who are looking to delve further into Sartre's philosophies. I think this series might help someone who is just being introduced to philosophy and may help them figure out which philosophers they want to learn more about. So there's that! ...more
