A sane person would wish him well and move on with their life. A desperate person would try to reach their loved one and convince them to reconsider. But Adam? Adam blows up the fucking world.
After his detonation, he goes to wait for Ross at his cabin where, in a fit of rage, Ross attacks him. Adam and Ross then have a heart to heart where Ross tries to convince Adam that his naivete and youth aren't excuse enough to go making such bold decisions for others.
But Adam felt that because he loved Ross, the least he could do was open Ross' eyes to what could be. This short story is uncomfortable. It twists your emotions in ways that are hard to articulate. Toxic, flawed, passionate.... this is how you centre a story around people who do bad things. I still absolutely loved it.

The second book in the Bedknobs and Broomsticks series picks up right where the first one left off.
After Ciara tries to kill Cosmo because she thought he killed Seamus, Cosmo and new husband John go on honeymoon to Scotland. They come back to San Fransisco to continue settling in and it's not exactly smooth sailing.
Meanwhile, Cosmo is certain that Ciara didn't kill Seamus and had nothing to do with putting Rex in a coma. But no one, not even his husband, will listen to him. What's a Craftsman left to do?
The mystery in this isn't as fleshed out as Lanyon's earlier works. The world building is delightful and not overbearing. The books leaves us with tantalizing questions...
(view spoiler)[1. Who ran Rex over? 2. Who tried to drown Cosmo in Paris? 3. Why is John impervious to magic? 4. What exactly is Jinx's latent something? 5. Why is the double agent working for both Nola and maman? 6. Why is Oliver in the witch council of elders? 7. What happened to John in Somalia? (hide spoiler)]

I have more to say about Joyce than I do about this short story- which is part of the collection Dubliners. I will say it's so goddamn magical, my mind swooned.
The space of sky above us was the colour of ever-changing violet and towards it the lamps of the street lifted their feeble lanterns.
The narrator is infatuated with a neighbour and he has the reaction I ordinarily have to money.
...her name was like a summons to all my foolish blood.
But my body was like a harp and her words and gestures were like fingers running upon the wires.
If this is the calibre of the stream of consciousness that he used to create that Odysseus fanfiction, I'm sold. I will definitely be reading Ulysses next year. (Please don't hold me to this).

Because for once, Calmes didn't resubscribe to her tired and tested method of having a cardboard cutout Jin/Jory/Milo who is beloved by all and unearthly beautiful. For once the MC is FAT and RELATABLE. And yes, I know how ridiculous that sounds considering he falls in love with a demon- but still Frank was written for readers like me.
Frank is a mihr- a human who is impervious to magical manipulation like Bella's shield but clever. This makes him a subject of interest to the mafioso like lives of supernatural creatures. He becomes a messenger for them. Keeps his head down and does his job.
Meanwhile, demon supremo Cael, who seemed to have been manufactured from my anime dreams is madly in love with Frank. They're meant to be. They're snorts mates. I hate that word. But I ignored it for the story because Frank is just so goddamn lovable.
I didn't want to faint and have people struggle to lift me. It was like Mary reached into the banished recesses of my mind and saw what I thought unconsciously. For once, the MC's inability to accept his attractiveness didn't come off as grating, it was believable. When the Jins and Jorys playacted their false modesty of their appearances I always wanted to reach into their books and shake them. Bitch, you're hot stuff and you know it, own that shit.
Cael was also a breath of fresh air. He reminded me a lot of Raphael from Sinnerman. The ending of this book was pretty surprising. I didn't like the ficlets as they ended up making me want more. This book deserves to be a full length novel or at the very least a sequel. It's also a freebie, so get to claiming it....more
Chef Drew Allison moves to the town of Orca's Slough with his bff Sam to start a new restaurant called Eelgrass. Their relationship is on the rocks and we are reminded of that frequently. Although, poetically. When the body of the drug dealing kitchen staff is found in the basement of the Eelgrass, Drew is forced to investigate the murder (somewhat unwillingly) because the police force of Mackenzie, Mackenzie and Mackenzie somehow thinks he's involved in whatever the hell is going on in Orca's Slough.
The mystery is well written. Gripping and isn't sidetracked by the drama surrounding Drew's life.
