This was SO good, it will probably be my favorite read of 2023. I hope this author writes more books like this this. The storytelling was beautifully done, I was completely emotionally invested with each of the characters as they struggled to come to terms with what had happened to them and what they were still capable of. The last hour of the audiobook had me literally gripping the arms of my chair waiting to see what would happen. Highly recommend this quick read....more

I can tell that this is supposed to be very light and whimsical with some endearing moments but it is boring me to tears. I have to keep going back and re-listening to things because my mind is wandering while the narrator is speaking. It could just be an issue with the narrator or it could just be that I'm not in the mood for light and whimsical, but whatever it is, it's not working for me. And I'm SO disappointed! I loved Cerulean Sea by this author and I obsessively love any books (or TV Shows) that are about the afterlife, purgatory, reapers, etc. So this should have been right in my wheelhouse. Plus I had been anticipating this ALL YEAR. Ugh. I found a lot of the dialog very cheesy and the budding romance wasn't believable. The most compelling part of this story for me was Nancy and figuring out why she came to the teashop. Unfortunately, Under the Whispering Door is just not my cup of tea! ...more

Such a lovely and bittersweet story. It brought me to tears several times and made me think about my own family relationships and connections. I lovedSuch a lovely and bittersweet story. It brought me to tears several times and made me think about my own family relationships and connections. I loved the way the story switched perspectives but that Madeline's became less as the other characters came more to the forefront. I loved the way the women in this story were represented as strong and flawed and outspoken and unapologetic. I wasn't as much of a fan of Brady though bc his political leanings were brought up more than once which was the only thing I truly disliked about the book but it definitely affected my enjoyment of the story. ...more

A story of ghosts and witches with a new and unique perspective that was both fascinating and compelling. The narration was perfection - I was lost in the story from start to finish. My only complaint is that it was too short - I wanted MORE! I hope she revisits this from one of the other ghost's POV! This will be the first book of 2017 to make it to my "Favorites" list! ...more
Doll Bones is dark and whimsical, heartwarming and bittersweet, and so beautifully written that it will definitely find its way to my favorites shelf.Doll Bones is dark and whimsical, heartwarming and bittersweet, and so beautifully written that it will definitely find its way to my favorites shelf. Zach, Poppy, and Alice are on a quest to return the "queen" (creepy porcelain doll possibly made from murdered child bones) to her grave. This quest takes them across Pennsylvania and into Ohio and into some pretty scary situations. Throughout their adventure, the kids begin to explore their changing relationships with one another, with their parents, and within themselves. At the same time, they have to overcome many obstacles preventing them from completing their quest and returning the Doll Bones to it's proper grave.
I grabbed Doll Bones as soon as I saw that it was by Holly Black without even knowing what it was about but I was fairly certain I would enjoy it. And I was right. I Loved this story. The main characters are just 12 years old, at that in between age when they begin moving away from play and make believe and start focusing more on social expectations. I have a son that is 11 and so I could relate to this book so much as a mom watching as my son is going through these exact changes. Holly Black so perfectly captures the essence of this transition from child to adolescent while at the same time giving the reader a creepy adventure to enjoy.
I would highly recommend Doll Bones to readers of ALL ages. This is highly readable and exciting for younger readers and also has a depth and poignancy that older readers will appreciate. This is hands down my favorite read of 2013....more

I probably would have abandoned this story very early on because of the annoying main character had it not been for Prennace's wonderful storytelling. I also enjoyed the writing and flow of the story itself. I only knew the bare minimum about the Bluebeard legend before beginning this and I don't think I've really learned anything more of significance about that tale by reading this. Books like this make me face uncomfortable truths about myself, such as, maybe I'm just not a very nice person. The reason I come to this conclusion is that, when faced with a foolishly naive character, I usually root for the "villain" to kill her off. I find myself losing patience with characters who are so painfully oblivious that I think it is only fair that the much more interesting and complex villain get the pleasure of torturing and murdering her for my entertainment. And I'm often disappointed when it doesn't happen that way. Such was the case with Strands of Bronze and Gold.
I give the book 3 stars and the audio narrator 5 stars....more

It kept reminding me of Shade by Jeri Smith Ready with the way that wraiths were known to react. I liked Shade much better than this one though because of the additional back story and world building included in the longer novel. I think I would have enjoyed this one more if it would have been a lot more fleshed out. ...more
