In it, she explores her first encounters with the book, the history behind it, her thoughts on how it came to be published, and why she feels it’s an important work to preserve and revisit. As a long-time fan of Miss Irene, it was exciting to get a glimpse of the woman behind the stories, and to share in her thoughts on fetish and fashion as it relates to Dressage. She also explains her approach to the translation, and her footnotes throughout explain why she made some of the choices that she did.
As for Dressage itself, it’s a story within a story within a story, accompanied by gorgeous black-and-white illustrations. At its heart, it’s a story of the images and the experiences to which they relate. At a layer above that, it’s a story of a young man being punished by a group of older women for having dared to peek at the images. And then, at its final layer, it’s the story of a Master and his slave discussing their reactions to the deeper stories as they enact their own scenes of domination and punishment.
Whether it’s 60 years old or 90, the activities and costumes of Dressage are still immediately familiar to anybody who has even dabbled in BDSM. It has elements and male and female domination, whipping and spanking, the use of toys, feminization, and fetish gear including stockings, boots, and corsets. It’s easy to look at the images and lose yourself in the scene, and Miss Irene’s translation makes those scenes come alive in a way that’s accessible to modern English readers.

Before we get to that confrontation, though, there is another in store within this chapter. I won’t go into detail (you can likely guess from the cover blurb), but it ties deep into the first two books and promises to have consequences for Eli when summer break is over.
As for the ominous part, that involves a certain freedom given to Clem, another new realm of discovery for Eli, and a final moment that feeds my fears of that looming confrontation. I’ve been very diligent about not reading ahead, but I had to peek at the blurb for Deception as soon as I was done . . . and it has my feelings a muddled as Eli’s relationship. I don’t want his story to end, but I need to know how it ends!

It's not just about the mask, however, or even the fantasy of crossdressing that began his journey - it's about recreating someone and 'becoming' them. Minor spoiler for the first book here, but what makes this volume so fascinating is the fact that we're already beyond the discovery stage. Seeing is Deceiving is like a popcorn thriller where you're constantly wondering what's going to happen next, questioning who is really who, and just waiting for the next complication to arise. It's a guilty pleasure of emotional entanglement, and it only gets wilder as it progresses. However, it's also a deeply thoughtful story of why we like to play a role, the appeal of stepping into someone else's life, how walking a mile in another's heels can change us, and how such lies can impact those around us. The story gets rather convoluted in the latter chapters as too many things go too far, as promises are broken and desires indulged, and Ghostly Writer doesn't shy away from the consequences.
The exploration here feels a little less taboo with the introduction of more characters, not to mention Billy's impersonation being given a purpose, but that doesn't make it any less thrilling. It's humorous, erotic, insightful, and perhaps a little creepy at times, but the vicarious thrill of being Billy being someone else is wonderful. Settle in, turn the page, and enjoy being deceived!

We not only feel the caress of satin or the pinch of heels, but we also feel the joy of seeing 'her' in the mirror . . . and the dread that, if we step outside, others will see through to 'him' instead,
In many ways, the early chapters of the novel remind me not just of stories I read in my youth, but my own first forays into gender exploration. So much of Adam's experience is real and relatable, even if it does make me jealous of things like self-checkouts and online shopping. Seriously, I remember when Amazon was just a bookstore, and you had to tell the old lady at the mall you were buying sexy lingerie for your girlfriend (who just happened to be your size). It makes me sound super old to say this, but kids these days have it so easy! That said, Atherton does throw in some challenges, one of which turns out to be rather opportunistic, but I won't spoil it.
There is a definite element of fantasy to the novel as well, however, especially in how easily (and completely) Adam passes as Amy. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of effort put into passing - wigs, fake boobs, tucking, cosmetics, etc. - but Adam also has an already androgynous body to transform. Personally, I still adore that sort of fairy tale of feminization, but it's important to acknowledge that fantasy because that leads us into the fetish elements.
Let me be clear, Adam is not the fetish. The transformation into Amy is something that feels genuine and heartfelt from the very beginning. For all the protests and promises of never again, the happiness and comfort that come with being Amy are very clear. This feels like a transgender journey from the start, and I loved how the realization of that identity was so drawn out. Where the fetish element comes in is with the erotic encounters with various older men, most of which fall into the naughty girl or slutty sissy. There's nothing necessarily wrong with those sexual explorations, but given how authentic and relatable so much of the book is, some readers may find the clichés a bit of a turn off.
Ultimately, Going Out is a wonderful story of gender exploration that feels as if Nicola Atherton has either lived it or loved someone who has. It's beautifully written and almost perfectly paced, taking its time where it needs to, and getting frantic and rushed where the story demands it, with a small cast of key characters who give it life. The ending comes on a bit suddenly, with the epilogue leaving a few unanswered questions, but as fairy tales go, it's everything the reader could ask for.

What made this such a sweet read was the innocence of the two boys. They're both so naive, so tentative in their movements, that you can't help but cheer on their mutual awakening. Lexi Linorre does a lovely job of establishing her characters, making them relatable and immediately likable. We hope Isaac will take her up on her offer of a date, and are delighted when he summons the courage to step outside his comfort zone and see what she has to teach him. Where so many authors would leap right to the kinky stuff, taking them from friends to lovers with an ambush of kisses and caresses, Lexi allows them time to get to know one another. There's a wonderful extension of their discussion from the bar, and a slow, casual session of professional feminization that's as erotic as it is teachable.
It takes a while for the story to get explicit, and it gets surprisingly nasty along the way, but that's as far as I'll go in teasing all the fun to come. Curiosities is a fabulous read, smart and sexy all at once, and I do hope you'll give it a chance....more
