This book isn't about falling in love, it is about staying in love through heartache and grief and loss and insecurities. This author has made me care about these characters so much, not just Grip and Bristol but the peripheral characters as well. The friends and family have feelings and opinions that are not always expressed well, but the conversations are done just so well. It was nice to be here for the growth with all the characters. And this author's writing is just beautiful.
My only negatives, and I know this is a "me" problem, is the amount of spice and how kind of cringy that can get. Like I said though, if that's your thing, I think you will love this too. ...more

I was more connected to the present storyline than the past initially, but that balanced out by about the halfway point. The third act conflict really made me eye roll hard, but it nearly always does with romance. (I'm hard to satisfy that way.) I did shed a few tears, and I did really become invested in the love stories. Ultimately, I wish this had been a bit shorter though as I do feel the first half was a bit more of a slog than I would prefer. But that ending! ...more

Knowing this revolves around the couple "meeting" on Only Fans, I thought I knew what to expect. I did not. This cover implies cute rom com. It was more than half smut. I don't have a problem with smut. It was just so abundant and so cringe. If we can stop talking about "folds" that would be fantastic. Also, I never, ever want to read or hear the word "splash" in a sex scene. I did, and now I can't unsee it or unhear it.
There really wasn't much more to the plot than what you already know from the synopsis. And this was waaaaay too long to not have more. The third act conflict was really predictable and just not good in my opinion. You can count all the characters in this 400+ page book on one hand, and you literally don't know anything about them by the time it's over, other than two of them are really horny all the time. This just wasn't for me. ...more

I knew that she writes about women in STEM and that all the male love interests are agonizingly described as being large in every sense. I can confirm both of these things are true.
The good news: I liked the banter. It was funny in parts. The slow burn was nice. I loved how the FMC bashed on men and was a badass in her profession. I liked how the life of an adjunct was accurately represented as a shit-paying thankless job.
The bad news: While the FMC was a total baddie in her profession, she was kind of a sad door mat in all other aspects which puzzled my brain a bit too much. And I really disliked the sex scenes, a lot.
Overall, 3.5 stars. I needed this book when I read it as I had just come off a long line of really heavy reads. This was entertaining and not too cringy. ...more

Yes, I care about the love story, but I love them all individually. I love that they are flawed, and that they have real world problems. I appreciate the intelligent and sensitive approach to some hard to discuss topics.
And a special thing for me in her books is I just love that she writes books that take place in the Twin Cities because that is not far from me, and I always know all the places she is talking about. It's like being in on a secret that I can actually visualize these places. I love this universe, and I hope we never leave. ...more

Unpopular opinion, but I don't think I loved this as much as everyone else sadly. I loved the NYC setting. I liked Clementine as a character mostly & the fact that she was called Lemon was so adorable. I liked the overall concept and the culinary and publishing aspects of it. It was an overall entertaining read. I would recommend it.
For me, what didn't work mostly were the time travel elements which I normally love. I don't feel they were done as seamlessly as they could have been. I didn't like the lack of rules associated with the magical elements. It left me a bit dissatisfied.
And a tiny rant: I am soooo incredibly tired and OVER 20-something year old characters piss and moan about how "old" they are getting. Ashley Poston may be taking the blunt of it here from me for a lot of authors that do this, but this is my most recent time reading it and it just rubbed me the wrong way. I would be way more personally connected with these supposed adults if they didn't say stupid shit like that. ...more

Her writing is exquisite, as always. I loved these two main characters so much that I didn't want the book to end. I would have read 1200 pages of Daphne and Miles. I felt all the feels in this book.
I still have Book Lovers to read, but this one takes the top prize so far. It will be one of my favorites of the year....more

I cannot with these characters. First, I don't want to read about underage characters doing it. Gross. Then, we have to suffer through the majority of the book to see what went wrong in their otherwise perfect bff relationship. He accidentally had sex with someone else when he was blotto?! That's what we were waiting for all along? Not cool.
And we are supposed to believe that Macy's dad dying just was unnoticed by Elliott and his entire clan, even though they had spent all this time together and were part-time neighbors for what, a decade?
I'm sure Macy and Elliott will live happily ever after, and she will get over all the trauma he caused her. And I'm sure they'll talk everything out since they did such an awesome job at doing that at any point. Maybe the reason they both sucked at other relationships was not because they were too in love with one another the whole time. Maybe it's because they both just suck at communicating when things get dicey....more
I think I have maybe grown out of my smut era I realized, but that doesn't mean that Kennedy Ryan doesn't do it incredibly well. Moreover, this story I think I have maybe grown out of my smut era I realized, but that doesn't mean that Kennedy Ryan doesn't do it incredibly well. Moreover, this story has so much more to tell. It's rich with beautiful dialogue and heavy social commentary.
It was an intense slow burn which I appreciated. But 8 years? I liked how outwardly strong Bristol was, but her poor choices and lack of letting anything go, like EVER, started to grate on me a little bit. I get that coming from a place of privilege isn't everything, and she definitely had a justifiable axe to grind. I guess it started to wear thin.
Grip on the other hand is such an intensely likeable character. Alternatively, he made some poor choices early on but continued to develop more as the story went on. Ultimately the ending was phenomenal, and I couldn't have been happier with how everything resolved....more

Sadie is a struggling portrait artist who finds herself dealing with a sudden health issue which ultimately results in her experiencing facial blindness. The idea behind it is a super interesting one in this genre. Unfortunately for me, it didn't work like I hoped it would. And this is coming off The Bodyguard which I read earlier this year which I did actually love.
Sadie was definitely going through it as a character, but I didn't really ever connect with her. I found her to be self-centered. Yes, she had some really bad circumstances, but the "poor me" attitude was not fun. Her family is absolutely dreadful, and I really never found a concretely satisfactory reason why they would be so incredibly cruel to her. It is kind of explained but at the end of the day did not add up.
The worst offense for me was the overall plot. I know it's romance, and we all know how romance novels usually end. In this case; however, it's frustrating to read an entire book when you know everything that is going on about the main character, and the main character remains clueless. (Maybe if she wasn't so self-centered and bothered to ask anyone anything about themselves she would have figured it out too?)
That said, I did like the writing and would continue to read from this author. The story is light and cute at times. It is a good quick summer read that I finished in one day. If that's what you're looking for, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The MFC Fizzy (hate this nickname so much) in The True Love Experiment is a much more entertaining character than Jess was in the first book. The two don't have to be read together, but the primary love interests Jess and River are in this book quite a bit, and I think a lot would be lost without knowing the backstory.
I really liked Felicity (that's what I'm going to call her) as an over-the-top character. I think what I liked most about it is I'm a total ho for a dating show, and since that is the premise of this book, I ate it up....more

I found a lot of the writing to be redundant, some of it even completely unnecessary. Elsie, who I was to have sympathy for in the beginning, quickly became a major irritant. She was just plain insufferable by halfway through the book. And Ben was so not believable. These two main characters could have been teenagers for how immature their dialogue and behavior was. This was a cute little palate cleanser with all kinds of delicious bookish topics. I really liked the beginning with the emails back and forth. I enjoyed the characters and the sister relationship. I wish the dialogue had been more abundant and the NYC setting more of a character. There were also so many pop culture references; I could have done without about half of them.
