This was a new story as I had not heard of this tragedy when it occurred. On that note it kept me reading. However, this book reads more like a podcast than a typical true crime story. The downside of that is it fails to deliver what the author attempts to achieve in writing it in the first place. If you are unfamiliar with the story, as I was, their is nothing here that you couldn't find with a Google search. Like some of the Romanian folk tales were very interesting but I continually was getting lost and confused that the book fell short of satisfying for me. I'm also a reader who prefers books that have a good balance of dialogue and narrative and this was too heavy on narrative for me. This book just needs to find the right audience. I've read countless books about WWII primarily about the Holocaust. This was so different and a story that needs to be told. I picked this book thinking it was going to be about Merie's experience as a children's nurse during the war, but it's much more than that. In fact there's very little of it and for good reason. What this woman sacrificed, risked and accomplished is truly amazing. It deserves to be read. I knocked a star off due to several punctuation and editing issues....more

If you're a fan of Hallmark movies then you'll love this book. I, however, am not. Reading this book is like reading someone's daily diary or journey and nothing really more. There's no plot, villain, no story. What it is is simple reading, some great descriptions of iconic NYC locations, a recipe or two and an ending my 5 year old granddaughter could figure out. 2.5 stars rounded up as I enjoyed the lavish apartment details....more

I was so excited about this new series by these amazing authors. However, I struggled with this all the way through. What is not usual is that I don't like the main character Margot very much. I didn't mind her too much in the first two books but what she does in this book and her seemingly immaturity in many areas disappointed me. The characters are rich and the storyline is never dull. However, there is some repetition that can be a bit annoying - it's like we get it - next! Overall another solid delivery. This book interested me as it was written by a doctor who worked in a public hospital. I enjoyed most of the stories but sometimes felt they were geared for those in the field. The author is a huge advocate of the war on diabetes and the latter part of the book dealt primarily with that. If you enjoy books of this type you will this as well. The book started off very slow and I was getting frustrated waiting for it to get started. There was no recap - it was just like idled. Once it finally took off it went full speed and never looked back. The story was exciting and the games were even more twisted. I can hardly wait for the next one. I do wish, however, that series books would put recaps in. The time between releases is great and it's hard to remember everything especially when you read as much as I do....more
