She's Back!!!! After her last book, which was a big disappointment for me (and others), Freida McFadden has wrote another winner. Great characters and plot and you will go back and forth on who is the villain. There are some things I figured out early but that may be because I've read every one of her books and have just gotten used to her style. However, there are always things that I miss and surprise me which is what I love about this author....more

I, for the most part, really enjoyed this series. The books at the start were terrific and I anxiously awaited for the next. However, the last two books were disappointing and this was my least favorite of the group. It seemed to lack the dynamics of the previous ones and even Makk couldn't satisfy me. Overall it's still a pretty good series and am glad I read it....more

Just didn't live up to all the hype for me. I didn't like the main character at all - in fact I didn't care for the vast majority of them. The story just didn't work for me on so many different levels. The synopsis states this book has humor in it but I couldn't find it. This is one purchase I regret. A historical fiction story of a tragic fire in an upscale NYC hotel. The characters are numerous, their engagement surrounding the fire and its aftermath are engaging. The sleuthing, particularly by Marguerite, to find the catalyst for the fire is so interesting. You will find yourself making excuses to keep reading this book. The title does suggest that the focus is on Anne Beauchamp, Isabel and Anne Neville but most, not all, is information for those of us that read about the War of the Roses know already. I will state though there was some new information for me. The author does a very thorough job of researching, the best she can, what information she could and speculates, based on history, what she can assume was behavior, reactions, and results of these women. Again, like others, if this book marketed itself as a book on the War of the Roses it would be very good and net a higher rating. I do applaud the author for her effort but feel she fell short of her goal. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion. ...more

What IA very interesting book with a look at many of the inmates, both men and women, who were sent to Broadmoor Asylum mostly due to murder charges. What I loved about this book was it didn't get bogged down with unnecessary detail. Each "story" was concise and to the point with just the right amount of information to keep it interesting. The author certainly put her time in for this book. There are plenty of pictures as well which is always a bonus for me. What I found intriguing is how quickly neighbors rushed to help, police responded and doctors arrived on scene. Never happens now. You won't be disappointed with this book. The author is strong in his opinion that the bus should never have been removed and placed in a museum and everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion and I don't believe that a review should be based on whether you agree with that or not. However, I do think the comment about the two drowning deaths of foreigners - stating that "you can't fix stupid" was totally unnecessary. Includes pictures and although I did skip some sections that were just a bit dry for me I for the most part found it interesting reading. I knew nothing about Angela Burdett-Coutts so this made it all the more interesting for me. It jumps ahead through time in her life (but from what I've read about Mr. Gold's other novels it seems to be his MO), but this doesn't bother me. Where I think it falls it that it seems to never complete a relationship. Such as her relationship with Charles Dickens - what happened and why? - her brother - again same thing. The book is almost a cliff notes of her life. Overall, I enjoyed it and it won't stop me from reading more of this author's books. It is historical fiction based on the rivalry between Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstein - two giants in the cosmetic/beauty industry. It is rich in history and the details of their lives. I especially enjoyed their marketing strategies and the competition with each other. You will find yourself going back and forth on who to root for in this claim to fame game in a world where women found it hard to dominate in the business world. However, these women did it! It's like sitting down, with a nice bottle of wine (or whatever you like to drink) and asking all the questions you have on this topic and she answers you with such great insight (and humor too). Her book covers everything - and I mean EVERYTHING! Not a subject is left unturned and April Taylor even warns you ahead of time for the gory/grusome parts (I particularly enjoyed them).
