A murder takes place in one of the two make believe cities and a 'detective' from each city is assigned the case. The two cities are twin cities, but each with a distinct flavor of its own where 'neither the twain shall meet'. The over ruling power is a nebulous unseen 'something or other' which keeps both cities in line....more

There is undoubtedly much to say about the ethics of cloning humans for the sole purpose of organ harvesting, but Ishiguro has failed to say it. For starters, the presumed rationale for using clones, as opposed to say, poor or mentally handicapped people, would most likely be (as I understand it is in the critically unacclaimed ""The Island"") that they are more readily accepted by the person from whom the genes were originally taken. Not here. There appears to be no relationship whatever between clone and ""original""--parts is parts, as they say....more
