My mind feels like it's been blown away after finishing the last chapter of the book. I'm still trying to gather my thoughts, with only a few gray cells left standing, to write a review. This extra twisty thriller completely rocked my world.
However, I'm not sure anything I write could do justice to my pure admiration. I've definitely become a dedicated fan of the author. I thoroughly enjoyed his previous thriller, but I never imagined he could write something even better. In this book, he had me gasping, shocked, and uncomfortable several times with twists hidden inside other smart twists that you never see coming.
He takes you on an action-packed, heart-throbbing ride into the crime world, spanning different timelines and unreliable narrations. It all starts with his complex hero, Leo Balanoff: a man who can be described as an enigma. His life story is a combination of lies, leading to his suspension from his job as a lawyer for being considered a pathological liar. From the first chapter, you suspect he might be a murderer and a conman, yet you find yourself rooting for him despite his many negative qualities.
As you delve deeper, you uncover his painful childhood and his connections to the dangerous criminal, Cyrus Balik. Alongside him is his love of his life, ex-cop turned corporate security member, Andi Piptriwski, the one who got away. Leo finds himself surrounded by people who are better liars and more dangerous than himself. Can he save himself from his seemingly inevitable demise?
Just read on to discover who the better liar is and who's the best ringmaster in this dangerous game. Be prepared for sucker punches and hold your jaw tight because some chapters will leave you gasping with twists you never saw coming.
A quick plot recap: Leo Balanoff, an attorney who recently returned to his job after a five-year suspension, finds himself the prime suspect in the case of ruthless human trafficker, rapist, and drug lord Cyrus Balik. His fingerprints are found on the murder weapon, and his DNA is found on the victim. Leo's past assault on a police officer, which ended with only a warning, put his DNA in the system, making it easier for officers to convict him.
FBI agent Chris Roberti, a cancer survivor, sees this case as an opportunity to catch the bigger fish: Nico Katsaros, the invisible boss behind Cyrus Balik. Leo becomes the key pawn in a plan to steal a formula that could cure cancer from Quigley Crowe International, a private medical technology company, and sell it to the Chinese Government. This is the same company where Andi, Leo's former love, now works. Leo doesn't want to go to jail, and he also needs to protect the son of a deceased client, who is being hunted by dangerous individuals. Can Leo trust FBI agent Chris, who may have his own secret agenda, or Andi, who may have her own secrets? But most importantly, can he even trust himself, a man considered a pathological liar whose life story is a web of ugly lies? Let the games begin, and may the smartest one emerge victorious!
Overall, I can't express how much I enjoyed this book! It's by far my favorite psychological thriller of the year, and I highly recommend reading it as soon as possible. Don't just add it to your TBR list, dive right in!

While I'm not sure if the truth is out there, I'm a hundred percent convinced that love is in the air when I dive into Hallie and Hayden's paranormal adventures. It's the kind of concept that makes me wish there was a real TV show like this to watch.
Let's take a closer look at the plot: Hallie Barrett, creative, smart, and aspiring producer, knows how to craft a great show concept and execute it from scratch. However, her self-esteem takes a hit after her emotional ex, Cade, who was also her co-worker, steals her project and spreads rumors that she's difficult to work with. With her job on the line, Hallie has to come up with a new show project and pitch it to her boss in a few days to prove her worth at the studio.
As she searches through various media platforms, including podcasts, her hopes begin to wane until she stumbles upon reruns of a late-night docu-series about Bigfoot. It's not the concept that catches her interest but the charisma and quirky sweetness of the showrunner, Hayden Hargrove. Hayden, a successful cryptid expert on his podcast, has a large following and captures the attention of viewers effortlessly. Despite being a nonbeliever,
Hallie decides to reach out to Hayden. However, their initial meeting results in a disastrous Hollywood ghost tour, yet their undeniable attraction is palpable. Hallie manages to convince her bosses to greenlight the project, but there's one major problem: Hayden gets nervous in the spotlight, and Hallie finds herself questioning him and his conspiracy theories during filming. Little does she know, their banter attracts even more attention, turning her into the co-host of the show—the Skylar to his Mulder: one believer, one skeptic. Together, they set out to create a kickass show that includes ghost hunting, contacting aliens, and searching for traces of cryptids like Bigfoot, Mothman, El Chupacabra, the Yeti, Loch Ness Monster, and the Jersey Devil.
For the show to be successful, Hallie must focus on two things: not falling in love with her very attractive, goofy host, and ignoring the hurtful comments from her ex, who likely won't make her climb up the success ladder easy. However, that's easier said than done, especially when she spends most of her time with Hayden and their attraction threatens to set their entire show ablaze!
Overall, this is an easy-to-read, highly enjoyable debut romance with lovable, uniquely charming characters that I highly recommend.

I devoured it in one sitting and found myself liking it even more than I expected, despite piecing together the mystery a little earlier thanks to my overworking spidey senses that are always searching for underlying meanings. The concept of monstrous drawings coming to life to hunt down their creator and loved ones is a perfectly creative plotline. The intense chemistry between Andrew and Thomas had me squirming in my seat, screaming at the chapters, “Just kiss him already, damn it!” I'm always a little impatient when I see smoking passion between characters. The gothic school theme, the detailed descriptions of the monsters lurking around the haunted forest, and the dynamics within the school, including popular kids, bullies, queer kids, and wallflowers, were portrayed realistically and made us care and root for Andrew even more. Even though I’m a middle-aged woman, I easily connected with Andrew's characterization, which helped me embrace my own quirky, outsider, sensitive childhood self.
Here's a recap of the story: it opens with Andrew Perrault’s return to Wickwood Academy with his polar opposite twin, Dove, who is a high achiever, competitive, and a social butterfly compared to Andrew's anxious, socially unadapted, shy demeanor. Andrew enjoys creating twisted fairytales with non-happy endings, ending in tragedies, and the only one who can see him as he is is Thomas Rye: rebellious, quick-witted, talented artist boy who becomes Andrew's guardian angel after the school bullies target him, becoming the third member of the tight bond he shares with his sister, Dove.
Thomas brings Andrew's twisted fairytales to life on paper, creating artistic, powerful, and extra-frightening monster drawings.
Andrew is thrilled to reunite with his friend after the tragedy that occurred nearly five months ago, changing their lives. But as soon as he steps foot into the academy, he realizes that nothing is as it used to be. Dove is still angry at Thomas after their fight, and Thomas is acting suspiciously, trying to hide a blood stain on his sleeve. The surprise visit from the police officers to question Thomas only makes things weirder. Gossip starts spreading around the school, with students speculating that Thomas may be the murderer of his abusive parents.
Could it be true? Why is Thomas distancing himself and disappearing into the woods every night? Could he have a secret relationship with Dove? Andrew grapples with jealousy over his unrequited feelings for Thomas and fear for him if he's involved in something malicious. What exactly is happening in the woods when darkness falls? Could it be related to the monstrous universe they created together?
Overall, this book is eerie, tragic, haunting, but also a heart-wrenching, beautiful love story that I highly recommend you read!

I enjoyed every part of it: the action-packed fighting scenes, prison escape sequences, mind-blowing revenge plans, scheming, betrayal, and high-chemistry romance with feminism and girl power vibes blended with Islamic horror, cultural elements, and supernatural phenomena, making the reading experience more enjoyable than most fantasy novels.
Dania is definitely the heroine you love to root for: tough, skilled fighter, survivor, determined, and behind her rough facade, she’s still caring and vulnerable for her loved ones. Being neglected from kind human touch makes her even more resilient.
Betrayed by the boy she loved and trapped in a prison cell for 364 days for a crime she didn’t commit, Dania faces torture by the notorious prison guard Touffsa, a vindictive, greedy, and merciless woman. She harbors revenge against the traitor guard Darbaran and her lover Mazin, who is also the right hand of Emperor Vahid, the first reason for putting blame on her.
When she hears scratching sounds in her cell and discovers a young prisoner girl named Noor attempting to escape, she realizes they can be partners to speed up the process. Noor knows how to raise and blend zoraat, a special vegetation that grants power and wealth to the empire. Together, they plan to use the zoraat’s powers to disguise themselves, create enough funds, and overthrow the emperor.
As unexpected events unfold and Noor is put in the infirmary, giving them a chance to escape and work on their plan, Dania must fight against the darkness slowly consuming her body and find a way to get revenge from Mazin, even as her feelings for him continue to ache her heart.
Can two young women defeat the most powerful emperor and his bloodthirsty guards, burning the empire to the ground while also fighting against more dangerous demons? Can Dania resist the Djinn powers seeking dark revenge?
Overall, it’s a fast-paced, exciting, and well-developed fantasy that I truly enjoyed. The romantic parts are also enjoyable, especially the palpable chemistry between Mazin and Dania. It’s one of the best retellings I highly recommend.

This book comes highly recommended for fans of fantasy thriller, gothic horror, and historical fiction, offering a captivating blend of genres reminisThis book comes highly recommended for fans of fantasy thriller, gothic horror, and historical fiction, offering a captivating blend of genres reminiscent of Agatha Christie's 'Murder on the Orient Express.'
While the slow-paced beginning may raise some initial questions, the narrative quickly gains momentum as different narrators unveil their introductory stories, drawing readers into a thrilling adventure. Picture a journey through the Wasteland, where glimpsing out of the train windows can unleash twisted images that threaten to shatter one's sanity. The voyage aboard the Trans-Siberian Express from Beijing to Moscow proves to be a journey not only of financial cost but also of mental toll—a price that voyagers may pay with their very sanity.
The cast of characters is as diverse as it is intriguing, reminiscent of the 12 passengers aboard the haunted Orient Express. Among them is Marya Petrovna, a grieving woman harboring a secret agenda under a borrowed name; Henry Grey, a disgraced naturalist seeking redemption for his past sins; and Elena, a stowaway with secrets and mysterious connections to the Wasteland. As alliances form and betrayals loom, passengers like Zhang Weivei find themselves torn between duty and loyalty, grappling with decisions that could alter the course of their journey—and their lives. With danger lurking both inside and outside the train, trust becomes a precious commodity, and passengers must navigate a web of deception to uncover the truth.
Overall, this is a captivating and smartly written fiction that seamlessly blends different genres, evoking Christie-esque vibes while delivering a thrilling fantasy-horror narrative with a touch of gothic intrigue. I wholeheartedly recommend it to genre enthusiasts and fiction readers alike, offering a unique and adventurous journey filled with twists and surprises.

I was blown away as soon as I got my hands on this highly anticipated historical fiction romance meets women’s fiction by Beatriz Williams. Who am I kI was blown away as soon as I got my hands on this highly anticipated historical fiction romance meets women’s fiction by Beatriz Williams. Who am I kidding? Every time she releases a new book, I dance with joy and make sure to carve out enough time to immerse myself fully in the remarkable journeys with her memorable characters until my eyes can't stay open (I have a rule to finish her books in one sitting, but due to the length of the text, sometimes it becomes more challenging than I can endure).
Anyway, if you ask me if I enjoyed this ride, I can enthusiastically scream “yes”, especially because the parts featuring Mallory resonated with me so intensely. I loved her character development: her endurance, tough, witty demeanor, her connection and devotion to her son Sam, and when I read about her past, uncovering the big mystery that forces her to keep secrets, I loved her even more. Her unfinished love story with Monk broke my heart.
Now, let’s talk more about the plot: there are two (actually three) timelines, and even though they center on Mallory Dunne and Hannah Ainsworth’s narratives, we also get limited perspectives from their lovers’ voices, which piqued my interest because I enjoyed seeing how these incredible women changed the course of the men’s lives and made them simmer in love.
The story begins in New England in 2022, where Mallory Dunne, a single mom barely making ends meet to take care of her 10-year-old son Sam, receives terrible news that pushes her to drive three hours to the hospital where Sam has been airlifted after being poisoned by toxic mushrooms at his summer camp. His condition requires a kidney transplant, and unfortunately, both Mallory and her sister Paige are not suitable donors. Their estranged father is not an option she wants to consider. And of course, she has no intention of asking the father of her child, the famous songwriter Monk Adams, whom she hasn’t seen since 2008 due to tragic events that separated them. Unfortunately, Monk is about to marry a famous influencer, so there’s no way she can face him, even for the sake of their child he never met.
But there’s one more lead that Mallory can follow. She discovers her mother was adopted, which means there might be relatives she never met who could help her as potential donors, leading her story to intersect with another timeline: Cairo, 1951.
In Cairo, we're introduced to Hannah Ainsworth: a Hungarian refugee still suffering from the aftereffects of the tragedy she endured during the war, married to a respectable British diplomat. Her husband's health condition leads him to an office job in Cairo, where Hannah is bitten by a snake and saved by the charismatic hotel manager Lucien Beck. This encounter changes her life forever, as a passionate forbidden relationship puts Hannah between two men and forces her to make a decision between two different life paths. As soon as she discovers she’s expecting, the choice she has to make becomes even more imminent and crucial.
Overall, I love both timelines and the well-developed characterization, but you may guess I rooted for Mallory & Monk’s story that takes place between 2008 and 2022, as it engaged me a little more. Take your napkins with you when you start reading this book to savor the emotional ride fully. Definitely one of the best historical fiction and women’s fiction of the year that you shouldn’t miss; it highly deserved my shiny five stars!

Well, I still don’t appreciate the publishers’ attitude of rejecting me each time I request any Ruth Ware thrillers, as I also emphasized in my previous review.
Nevertheless, it was obvious I would buy my own copy (if I enjoyed the ARC, I would also order a hard copy to add to my library, as I have done before). But in the long term, one thing has changed: I didn’t enjoy this book much! Maybe the publishers sensed that, which is why I got the rejection. So no worries, at least I had a little fun during the adrenaline-pumped sequences.
Let me explain why I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I planned:
Firstly, let me start with what I liked by attributing the book’s strengths: being abandoned on an island with a real-life Survivor concept meets “And Then There Were None” storyline with girl power vibes is an intriguing combination that I cannot resist.
The increasing pressure and nonstop action with Lord of the Flies-esque power games between the characters also kept me reading.
But I cannot honestly say this is much of a survival or adventure fiction combined with a domestic thriller than the mystery thriller I expected to read!
The couples are the worst kind of couples whose relationships are doomed to end as soon as the readers are introduced to them, including Lyla: a woman in STEM with a PhD, working on viruses, and a 32-year-old analytical introvert. Her extrovert, carefree unemployed actor boyfriend Nico is extremely self-absorbed and has no intention to tie the knot, buy a house, or have kids, which is the kind of future she wants.
The other couples include Angel, a Pilates coach and influencer who looks more sophisticated than her 28-year-old fitness instructor boyfriend Bayer, who gives off extra macho man vibes and shows off his mannerisms each chance he gets.
Dan (25) is a gay swimsuit model who secretly confesses to Lyla that he is on the other team and joined this contest to support Santana, his best friend and a champagne socialite. Joel (33), a quirky introverted, shy teacher, also has opposite attributes to his 31-year-old beauty influencer girlfriend Romi, who likes the spotlight more than her boyfriend.
And the last couple, Connor (31), a successful YouTuber and NFT trader with millions of followers, is way too self-obsessed and power-hungry, acting with extra confidence. His young (22) girlfriend Zana, who doesn’t have any career and mostly lives in his shadow, keeps her silence as she’s afraid of something.
Instead of Lyla, I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters and wished the book would end a little faster so I wouldn’t have to think about them again. Especially Nico’s fake loving gestures around Lyla made me gag. I wanted to scream at Lyla, asking why she even cared about this man and spent three years with him, coming to an island to support his miserable career, even though she sees the red flags and inconsistencies in the production team’s declarations? It seems like none of the characters can be declared a perfect couple from the first scene, and we know the contest’s result even though it hasn’t started: nobody can or should win this!
Another thing that bothered me, in addition to my dislike of the characters, is the wrapping up and big revelation to fill the plot holes and answer my questions: sorry, but I didn’t buy this explanation much. There are still unanswered questions and some far-fetched explanations, and I also didn’t enjoy the outcome! I felt like all of these tragic events happened for nothing!
That’s why I lowered my grade to three stars. I didn’t give a lower rating due to the lack of twists and big mystery because I still enjoyed the heart-throbbing pacing. Some parts of the book truly kept you on your toes and made you jump from your seat. The execution was really good! That’s why I kept going, and if I had gotten a more favorable ending with a better, smarter conclusion, I would have given four stars without hesitation because the concept of this book had so much potential, and the progression was good enough, too.
Even though I didn’t enjoy this one much, I will keep sending my early reading requests for any other work of Ruth Ware as a dedicated fan since I read “Woman in Cabin 10.” And even though I will keep getting unfair rejections, I will keep buying my copies on the release date, reading, and reviewing them with dedication.
This time, I’m not thanking NetGalley and the publishers. I’m thanking myself for patiently reading and honestly reviewing this book!

I hadn't had the chance to delve into Bridget Collins' previous works before, but after reading this book, I'm certain it won't be my last. If you're in the market for originality, uniqueness, and surprising plot twists, then this book is a perfect fit for you. Just imagine a special silk, spun by spiders, that envelops you in a deafening silence unlike anything you've ever experienced before. Is it mind-spinning, scary, astounding, and earth-shattering? Absolutely.
The main plot unfolds across two timelines: the first perspective is presented through the diary of Sophia Ashmore Percy in 1820. She travels to a Greek island with her husband James, intending to explore a specimen that could change the course of the world. However, upon arrival, they discover that their scientist friend is already deceased, and they are left in the care of a mysterious woman named Hira. Sophia's budding friendship and deep connection with Hira will change her life in ways she never imagined.
The narrative then shifts to decades later, introducing Henry Latimer, a widower working in his father-in-law's store as an audiologist. Still grappling with grief and depression, Henry's life takes a dramatic turn when he receives a special gift from Sir Edward Ashmore-Percy: a piece of silk produced by spiders, which severs his connection to the earth with its magical properties. Henry's encounter with this fabric leads him to Cathemute House in Telverton, where he meets Sir Edward and his deaf daughter Philomel. Determined to help Philomel, Henry becomes entangled in a partnership with Sir Ashmore-Percy to introduce spider silk to various markets. However, as Henry's feelings for Edward deepen, he begins to question Miss Fielding's warnings about the silk's potentially cursed nature, which manifests in various afflictions among workers and adults alike.
Overall, this is a well-written, intense gothic mystery that immediately draws you in. The mechanization of the Telverton silk factory is depicted with vivid realism, offering a glimpse into the lives of workers and the machinery they operate.
The conclusion ties up the narrative threads neatly, making this a must-read for fans of historical thrillers and gothic mysteries alike.

Wow! This book seems like a great blend of "To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before" meets "Ten Things I Hate About You." Julius and Sadie’s ultra-competitiWow! This book seems like a great blend of "To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before" meets "Ten Things I Hate About You." Julius and Sadie’s ultra-competitive acts also reminded me of Ben and Devi from "Never Have I Ever."
Instead of a little sister playing matchmaker by sending letters to the boys our main character has a crush on, we have unsent hate mail drafts of Sadie Wong. Sadie is an A-grader, top achiever, born to always win, a fixer, quick problem solver, but also a people pleaser. These unsent emails, filled with her resentment, frustrations, disappointment, and anger, accidentally get sent to their recipients. Can you believe there are already nine-year-old emails including all her bottled-up feelings? She never had the guts to face the situations and always avoided conflicts with people.
Her arch-nemesis, Julius Gong, is also her biggest competitor. He's an A-grader, school captain, charming to everyone except her, with the softest and most stylish hair. He pushes her buttons so hard that she can explode at any second if she didn’t pour out her feelings into those emails. It’s like anger management therapy, screaming into a pillow, or squeezing a stress ball. But unfortunately, her secret trash is out! A popular influencer who stole her science project, a teacher who didn’t grade her fairly, and a mean boy who borrowed her protractor and lost it before an important test are the other people she has pissed off with email torment, besides Julius, who might have been targeting her for years.
When they argue in front of an expert hired by the school to give a speech about cyber safety, they find themselves summoned to the principal’s office and forced to work on their differences. This means they have to spend more time together doing school errands, including cleaning the bike shed in the school yard.
Sadie has every intention of getting through this torture and burying the hatchet with her arch-nemesis until the smoke of the incident dies down. But interestingly, the boy who hates her guts starts running to her aid. He helps her clean her house after a disastrous party, competes to win a trophy for her, and even carries her when she dozes off during the competition. Even though he blames her for being obsessed with him by writing nine years of hate mails, could he also be obsessed with her? And why does kissing him awaken so many restricted feelings, even though she did it for a dare? Why does she keep blushing each time she sees him, and why does she get frustrated when he doesn’t attend class as she expected? Could they feel more than hate for each other? Could pure hate turn into a passionate love story?
This is a fast and cute enemies-to-lovers read with high chemistry and building tension between Sadie and Julius. I liked the chemistry parts, but what I didn’t like were the extra childish actions of both characters. Their push and pull reactions and immature communication made me frustrated. I wanted to scream at their faces to shut up and kiss each other.
The mysterious sender of the emails is too obvious from the beginning. As an extra smart young woman, Sadie should have figured it out right away. Instead of focusing on why those emails were sent, she focused on damage control. She should have looked for the sender in the first place.
I also expected an epilogue. I needed more Julius and Sadie moments! That abrupt and short ending also made me frustrated.
I’m still rounding up 3.5 stars to 4 for the high chemistry and enemies-to-lovers trope. Despite some frustrations, Sadie’s extra effort not to hurt others’ feelings and her chemistry with Julius were very palpable. Enemies-to-lovers is my soft spot, and I cannot give less than four stars to any well-executed book with good character development. This book checks all the boxes! I look forward to reading other works by the author. (This is also my third book of hers, and I enjoyed all of them.

Also, the possibility of a mystery plot involving a dead husband's return from death piqued my interest. In the first third of the book, which started too slowly for my taste, the author introduced two narrators in different timelines: June, in the present time, an organic wine pub owner who lost her husband Josh in a sea accident, finally finding a second chance at romance with her fiancé Kyle to start a new family. But when she sees someone who looks like her deceased husband secretly following her, she initially thinks guilt feelings are pushing her into seeing delusions. However, when her search on the internet to find a wedding place in Napa directs her to Andrew and Sadie Smith’s family winery, she cannot believe her eyes. The man in the photo looks exactly like her deceased husband. She denies his death and the last text message he sent to her, which wasn't written in his style, seeing him in places for years. Maybe she wasn't dreaming, and her husband is still out there, alive for years. The only way to find out is to go to Napa and confront the man.
In the other timeline, we move nearly two and a half decades before to read the narration of Bev: Josh’s mother, who recently gave birth to her baby Kieran, conducting the winery with her husband David, still trying to deal with the family scandal that affected their lives and troubled her marriage. There's a hint in conversations that the scandal may be related to Josh’s relationship with a young woman, Abby. On the other hand, Bev digs out a big secret about her husband that may destroy the already fragile facade of their marriage. A person’s sudden appearance from her complex past also makes things more complicated and pushes her to reconsider her entire life choices.
We go back and forth between the narratives of these two women to uncover secrets that shape their futures. Especially in the last third, the pacing finally quickens, keeping me on my toes with so many shocking revelations that culminate in an eye-popping conclusion, causing my jaw to hit the floor. What an earth-shattering ending, or let’s just say the beginning, that may change your entire perspective about the events and characters.
I couldn’t engage much with Bev, even though her backstory was relatable to so many women who are trapped in a marriage that slowly turns into a business partnership more than an emotional bond. On the other hand, June is a more relatable character who deserves a second chance at life.
Overall, it's a well-executed women’s fiction, family drama blended with mystery, and that "WTH" ending is the cherry on top.

For years, I've been diving into Rainbow Rowell's young adult romance novels, even though I'm not exactly in the targeted audience range. However, her queer Simon Snow series stands out as a favorite of mine. So, when I heard she had written an adult romance, I couldn't contain my excitement. This heartwarming and realistic new adult fiction resonated with me more than I had expected. Interestingly, my recent binge-watch of the adaptation of "One Day" on Netflix only intensified the emotional impact of this book. The themes of long friendship, unrequited feelings, flawed and realistic characterization, second chance love, and found family are strikingly similar in both concepts.
Shiloh and Cary are both likable characters, despite occasionally frustrating the reader with the choices they make and the patterns of their thoughts that lead them down the wrong paths. Their imperfections make them unique, lovable, and real.
Shiloh, raised in the troubled side of Omaha, first crosses paths with Cary at the age of sixteen. Cary, the boy who can make her laugh and tolerate her eccentric antics, dreams of joining the army. They become good friends throughout high school, secretly harboring crushes, but both have other life choices mapped out and deal with their own insecurities that prevent them from taking a step into vulnerability that could lead to more than friendship.
Fast forward fourteen years, and we find both of them unhappy with the hands life has dealt them—or perhaps, the hands they have chosen. Shiloh, now thirty-three, is a single, divorced mother of two, working at the Children's Theater. She realizes she has become the very mother she once criticized, a less entertaining version of herself without the flirting and enjoyment of life.
A wedding ceremony for a common high school friend brings Cary and Shiloh together again. Cary takes a leave from the army to address his family issues, and he also has complex feelings about seeing Shiloh, who is barely containing her excitement, wearing a new dress and a silk flower over her heart, showing effort after years to be seen by the boy who got away. The same boy she never realized how much she cared for until he was gone.
I would give five stars to the storyline and the perfectly developed characterization of this book. The dialogues, banter, level of sauciness, and sassiness blended in humorous and sentimental moments make you smile and also bring tears to your eyes. The numerous flashbacks take us on a journey through the 90s and 2000s, which didn't irritate me; in fact, it provided a much more realistic picture of the characters' life stories, struggles, fears, potentials, and dreams. The only thing that bugged me about this book was the pacing, which led me to deduct one star from my rating. Some parts of the book felt a little rushed, and the last third was a bit repetitive and dragged for my taste, making me wish the story would cut to the chase and give us a happily ever after.
Despite the slightly unusual pacing, the genuineness, honesty, and poignancy of this book warmed my heart. I truly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to contemporary and second chance romance lovers, as well as Rainbow Rowell's devoted fans.
Many thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for sharing this wonderful book's digital reviewer copy with me in exchange for my honest thoughts.

As power outages and wildfires add to the tension, the compelling pacing draws you deeper into the central mysteries, which intertwine the past and present with a web of secrets and tragedy.
The narrative revolves around three key characters: Leyna Clerk, a 28-year-old working menial jobs to make ends meet, consumed by the quest to uncover the truth behind her missing sister Grace's disappearance; Olivia Duran, mother to Adam, Dominic, and ten-year-old Thea, still holding out hope for her son's return while harboring secrets from her husband and nursing resentments towards the Clerk family; and Meredith Clerk, a professional art forger estranged from her daughter Leyna, grappling with her own troubled past and the secrets surrounding Grace's disappearance.
Leyna's chance encounter with young Ellie Byrd sparks memories of her missing sister and raises suspicions about Adam Duran's involvement. When Ellie herself goes missing, Leyna is compelled to return to her hometown and join forces with Dominic, Adam's brother and her long-time crush, to uncover the truth. As tensions escalate amidst the chaos of wildfires and power outages, long-buried secrets come to light, and the simmering animosity between the Clerks and the Durans threatens to erupt into violence.
Overall, I found the pacing and twists of the story to be engaging, though I was left with some lingering questions. The unlikable characterization of Olivia and Meredith, with their dysfunctional attitudes towards their children, detracted slightly from my enjoyment, but the intriguing storyline and satisfying conclusion ultimately earned it a rating of 4 stars.

Cyrus is a criminal psychologist, counselor, teacher, and also the guardian of Evie, still into cardio sports, living a secluded life in the old house inherited from his grandfather, living with Evie. He still tries to psychoanalyze her in his own ways, trying to open her up, and thankfully, Evie is not the same mercurial, self-destructive, nihilistic, infuriating, abusive, yet desperate for love girl. She has a bank account, attends courses, drives a car, works at a shelter to find the best homes for poppies. She's even slowly breaking barriers to go to crowded bars to meet her neighbor Liam, whom she might be harboring a crush on.
Unfortunately, their random life crashes after a few refugees are found dead at the seaside where Cyrus swims, as Evie witnesses and gets a catatonic episode after seeing Cyrus saving the only young survivor boy from the sea. Cyrus finds himself involved in the investigation of illegal boat trafficking of refugees and the gangs led by a mythical boogeyman called the Ferryman, who damages the boats of the refugees who resist paying him, following them until finding revengeful compensation by killing them brutally and leaving a coin inside the mouth as a symbol of Greek myth or kidnapping some of the victims for trafficking.
As Evie heals from her recent episode and complicated news she’s gotten from the hospital, Cyrus has no intention of leaving her side, even if it means taking her into the middle of dangerous operations where she meets a man named Angus Radford she recognizes from her past.
Cyrus is adamant about destroying the invisible barriers to help Evie heal, which means he takes her on a journey to Scotland, where Angus comes from, to reignite a walk down her memory lane. This trip may put their lives at stake to find out the truth about what happened to Evie’s sister Agnes and her mother, and it may also open a can of worms about the very politically powerful and notorious man who may be connected with Evie’s dark past and the entire people smuggling organization. Who’s the Ferryman? How was little Evie carried from the boat she was illegally shipped to England? What happened to her before her life turned into something scarier than the seven gates of Dante’s hell?
I cannot get enough of this series, and I enjoy how both Cyrus and Evie’s characters have evolved over four years, in four different books. I love their special bond of two broken, tarnished souls, holding each other to heal together.
I can’t wait to read more books. Let’s meet at the fifth adventure to see more adventures of my favorite characters who deserve happy lives, learning to deal with their emotional wounds in healthier ways.

It makes us believe dreams can come true at any time in our lives, as long as we open our hearts to embrace them.
I truly wished to get lost in Shenandoah and spend more time there until I let go of my insecurities, fears, troubles, and stress, shedding my old whining self and returning to innocence, laughing like a child. The world-building, metaphors, and Easter eggs hidden in the book, with references to Gilmore Girls and Batman, made me giddy.
The romance, friendship, and self-exploration blended in magical realism perfectly to immerse you in the secret lands of your mind.
The story revolves around three unique, one-of-a-kind characters: two young teenage boys, Jeremy Cox, a privileged English boy, and Ralph Howell (known as Rafe to Jeremy), a middle-class small-town boy with artistic talents. Bound by pure friendship, maybe more, they get lost in Red Crow State Park for six months, presumed dead. When they return, physically stronger, well-fed, and taller, nobody can explain what happened to them. Were they kidnapped? If so, how did they appear healthier instead of malnourished? Unfortunately, neither of them remembers anything about their disappearance. Especially Rafe, who shows signs of PTSD, short-term memory loss, and sleepwalking issues. After their return, Jeremy leaves town to live with his grandmother in England, severing ties with Rafe when he needed his friend the most.
Fifteen years later, we witness Jeremy becoming a celebrity for finding lost women and young girls, mostly in the spotlight, while Rafe develops his art in seclusion, hiding in his cottage. When the young, quirky, eccentric woman Emilie enters their lives needing help finding her lost stepsister, the two friends reluctantly unite to assist her in returning to Red Crow. Jeremy is convinced that they met Emilie's sister during their time lost in the woods, and only Rafe can find the way to this secret place. As they delve into their memories, secrets begin to unravel, allowing Rafe and Jeremy to piece together their shared past and embrace their future. But this is just the beginning of the story, isn't it?
Overall, I was hooked from the first page, enjoying the characters, the sacred love story, and the reimagining of the Narnia world. I look forward to reading Meg Schaffer's next magical adventure.

Imagine having a magical technological wand that allows you to rewrite your life story, refining it countless times until it's perfect in your eyes. What if there was a reality TV show that turned you into a star, manipulating the strings of your life like a puppet master, delving into the main logic of quantum physics and jumping into different realities until you find the one that suits you best? But what if you didn't choose the best one, leaving behind a potentially far less perfect life?
In this mind-crushing novel, we meet Marsh, a 45-year-old recently divorced housewife raising a music prodigy daughter. After leaving her cheating husband of a 20-year marriage, she feels depressed, believing she hasn't accomplished anything in her life. But what if she didn't give up her law school dreams to raise her daughter? What if she could be a hotshot lawyer and have a second chance at her marriage or even reunite with her high school sweetheart, Ren? With the opportunity to join the third season of the reality show, host Talia, who was also a contestant in the first season, is there to help her embrace her dreamy future.
However, as Marsh explores the endless possibilities in her life, striving to make everything perfect, she encounters numerous inconsistencies that blur her mind. The season progresses, and instability grows: breaks in the continuity of her life, fragments of memories left on cast members, old pathways encroaching on new ones, and mysterious deleted texts from an unknown user. Is she trapped in a delusional bubble from which she cannot escape? Is embracing her less perfect life the only path to freedom?
Reading this book is like being trapped in a labyrinth: you keep turning the pages to escape, only to find yourself back where you started, jogging like a hamster on a treadmill. It's smart, mind-shattering, and incredibly original. I couldn't stop reading and marveling at the author's brilliant mind.
I'll admit this book isn't for everyone; it will undoubtedly garner mixed reviews. Some readers may find the premise confusing or disappointing, while others will be enthralled by it. Thankfully, I'm one of the fans who consider this the author's best work. I highly recommend it to sci-fi lovers and anyone bold enough to get lost in the abyss of possibilities and enjoy the wild ride.

This novella is truly unique, with its fast-paced horror narrative that kept me on the edge of my seat. While I was prepared to give it a full five stars for its scary and unconventional storyline, the ending left me slightly disappointed, leading to a slightly lower rating. However, don't get me wrong! The book is still a thrilling, smart, and surprising piece of work, with a well-executed translation that perfectly captures the dark and sarcastic tone of the characters and the overall creepiness of the story.
I devoured this novella in less than two hours, completely engrossed in the story even as my husband complained about the burned dinner. After finishing the book, I found myself losing my appetite and feeling a spine-tingling sensation on my neck, as if the main character, Iðunn, was watching me with her vacant, sleepy eyes!
Now, let me give you a quick recap of this dark and bleak novella that you definitely shouldn't read before bedtime:
The story unfolds in the starless nights of Reykjavik, where Iðunn lives, suffering from clinical fatigue that she fears may be a symptom of something terminal. However, blood tests reveal she's physically healthy, suggesting her situation may be psychosomatic, related to stress. She has a dysfunctional relationship with her family, who are also grappling with the death of their elder daughter, and her relationship with her coworker ended on a sour note.
Iðunn tries to control her sleeping habits by tracking her sleep patterns with a new watch, but each time she wakes up, she finds herself in disturbing situations, such as blood covering her face, a black swollen eye, or broken nails, with her body covered in dirt. She discovers that she sleepwalks at night and always ends up in the same location. But why is she walking there? What is happening to her?
I may have revealed too much already, but if you're up for an ultra-bizarre ride that will send shivers down your spine, I highly recommend diving into this unputdownable journey!

"Madness" is an absolutely chilling and gripping read that seamlessly blends elements of paranormal and psychological mystery, offering a fresh and intriguing perspective on the modern retelling of Dracula infused with Welsh mythology, folklore, and feminist themes. The narrative is filled with kickass, tough, and powerful heroines, adding layers of depth and complexity to the story.
From the moment I started reading, I was completely hooked on the journey of the main character, Mina Murray. As an empathic and intelligent psychiatrist, Mina chose her profession as a means to heal her own pierced and broken soul, grappling with her own obsessions and nightmares that led her to flee her hometown. Leaving behind her best friend Lucy, her first and only love Jonathan, and her eccentric mother—who is rumored to be a witch with her vast knowledge of Welsh folklore and powerful herb concoctions—Mina embarks on a journey of self-discovery and redemption.
When Mina receives an email from her estranged friend Lucy, who may still harbor resentment towards her for leaving town without saying goodbye, her carefully constructed daily routine is disrupted. As she reconnects with Lucy, now married to a wealthy husband in the transportation business, Mina is shocked to discover that Lucy exhibits the same troubling symptoms as her latest patient, Renee. Both women are experiencing sleepwalking episodes, delirium, hallucinations, anemia, and worsening rashes, with no clear explanation for their ailments.
As Mina delves deeper into the mystery, she uncovers a disturbing pattern: several young girls, presumed missing, have been found dead, all of whom were lured by a mysterious job opportunity at a prestigious nightclub frequented by the rich and powerful. Is there a secret organization preying on innocent girls from lower-class families?
As Mina's investigation leads her to the dark web, she encounters a group of conspirators whose motives remain unclear. In order to help her friend Lucy, Mina must confront her own dark past and risk everything—including the safety of her loved ones. Will she find the courage to face her own demons and uncover the truth?
Overall, "Madness" is a brilliant horror read that will shake you to the core and leave you on the edge of your seat. It's a gripping and spine-tingling tale that will keep you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend it, and I eagerly anticipate reading more works by the author!

I believe both Jennifer Donnelly and Christina Henry excel in crafting dark fairy tale retellings, or rather, redefining them as midnight tales. DonneI believe both Jennifer Donnelly and Christina Henry excel in crafting dark fairy tale retellings, or rather, redefining them as midnight tales. Donnelly's "Stepsister," a retelling of Cinderella from the stepsister's perspective, immediately captured my interest. She breathes life into the overlooked characters of fairy tales, allowing readers to see them in a new light. When I learned she had penned a gender-reversed Beauty and the Beast tale with a werewolf twist, I was sold before even delving into Arabella's journey.
Arabella's character is a delightful blend of quirkiness, intelligence, refinement, and emotional depth. Despite her rare capabilities and passion for architecture, she's treated as an outsider by her family, who push her towards conventional pursuits. Trapped in a castle with a mysterious council of eccentric women, Arabella faces earth-shattering tragedies and secrets lurking within the castle walls, including a child held captive and a midnight monster threatening lives.
Enter Beauregard Armando Fernandez de Navare, a charming but troubled thief who finds himself unexpectedly entangled in the castle's mysteries. Desperate to escape and protect his brother, he forms an unlikely alliance with Arabella. Their burgeoning connection, amidst danger and deception, adds layers of intrigue to the story.
The book's rich symbolism, psychological depth, magical realism, and nods to other fairy tales create a captivating narrative. The dynamic between Beau and Arabella, filled with witty banter and simmering chemistry, elevates the story, blending elements of opposites attract and enemies-to-lovers tropes. This retelling of Beauty and the Beast is among the best I've encountered, and the poignant epilogue left me yearning for more.
