Set in Bavaria, Der Schützenkönig vom Chiemsee is about a family whose father is suddenly gone. The 'murder' set the tone for a good time at the beginning, but it all dwindled into nothing. Quite boring.
On the plus side, I learned a lot of new vocabulary related to death and funerals. Could have been less depressive. Oh, well! ...more

Jan and Stefan go to visit the Egyptian Museum to see their latest acquisition, a mummy of General Thoukanis. Little do they know that they would be the recipient of a curse that leads to chaos all around.
I actually enjoyed this book a lot though I still haven't progressed enough to read books with characters that have depth. I went through a slump with German last week because it's been so hectic and Adjektivendung is killing me. But what the hell, I'll come through. I am enjoying the classes again, so that's there. And I got a new book!

The story revolves around a young schoolboy, Kolja, who has to move with his family from Berlin to a small town because his father's job demands it. How he makes friends in his new home, how he begins to enjoy life again, and how he makes the transition from one place to the other covers the story.
I actually thought Kolja was a girl, so I was so happy when "she" began playing football in school and stuff. After the apparently stay-at-home mother trope, it felt like a breath of fresh air, but sadly mid-way through, I realised Kolja was not a girl. Need more attention to pronouns, that's for sure!...more

This time, the two get a call from an insurance company asking them to check out whether the death of their client was natural or not. As the two investigate, they peel off the layers of the dead man's life and secrets. There is danger and suspense as well, sufficient for me to get so caught up in the story that I actually stopped writing down new words and stuff. I had to read the damn thing twice!
I think this is the best of the German adult learning books I have read so far. I think there are more books from this series in the Goethe Institut library. So looking forward to devouring them all before I level up too much to enjoy them! ...more

And Kaltes Blut was a much better story than my first attempt at a German book. This one has teenagers - a group of them decide to go skiing. There are already tensions between some of them. When detective Markus Berg turns up at the same ski resort, he senses trouble.
It's a simple story (obviously!) and I enjoyed reading it. Most of the vocabulary was easy enough to understand without a dictionary. But I did use one to pick up all the other words, so learned quite a lot too.
I started learning German in Jan and I decided to pick up a few basic learner books from the Goethe Institut library. This one was my first. I rather liked the structure and layout of the book and it did improve my vocabulary. However, the story was quite boring.
It's about a man called Leo who owns a pub. He falls ill and is forced to rely on others to help him run his pub. There are other characters in the book too, including Leo's friend who is preparing for a marathon run. Leo is put on a diet and exercise regimen by the doctor but is too annoying to follow it properly. Then Leo gets better, all's well that ends well. Meh!
