Also, I really like this post-zombie-apocalyptic world she created. And I love it because it's about writing and the news and that's such a fresh take on the zombie trope.
And you find what you know you'll find in a Grant book : LGBTQIA+ representation, done well. Also mental illness and disability representations, done well too. And diversity. And great female characters. And found family... Everything I want to read about !
I hope she'll come back to that universe, I feel like there are so many things to explore still ! ...more

I really liked that book. I felt like all the characters were well written and interesting. I liked the story, I didn't care much if it made sense in a scientific way, the story made sense, that is what I need from a book.
I listened to the audiobook and all the narrators were great. I really recommand it.
One of the things I loved was how some of the inequalities we're facing as women were underlined in a kind of subtle way (basically by showing that in a society with mostly women, those inequalities are worked on). ...more

I still really love that idea of blogging becoming so important in a post-apocalyptic world. This is still what I feel is the most original in that story. And I'm still not bored with it yet, I can't wait to read the next book set in the same universe.

Saying it was disappointing would not even be true. I had very little expectations for that book but thought it would at least be a good entertainment... I wasn't expecting to be swept off my feet by it like I was by The Hunger Games trilogy. Yet this book succeeded in not even reaching the very low bar I had fixed.
In theory the theme could have been very interesting, but I felt like I was ready some bad fanfiction and couldn't find the spark that Suzanne Collins brought to her first trilogy. Nor the cleverness or the political discourse.
Everything felt empty, particularly the long moments of philosophical/ethical talks about war and such. The main character felt nothing like what he becomes, he didn't feel particularly clever, manipulative or charismatic. He also didn't seem to be really ambitious, and felt like a kinda vapid heir to an old family. Nothing in him made me think one second he could become someone important.
And the love story ? Do I really have to talk about that ? What a let down ! The first trilogy had a love triangle and still wasn't full of stereotypes and felt true and didn't feel "tropy". In this book it's the polar opposite. Once again, felt like bad fanfiction. And totally unbelievable. Artificial. Also, it really wasn't needed. Would have been way more interesting (and on point) to have Snow really care if Lucy survives because how it could help him gain power/money/fame/etc. He didn't need to fall in love with her to be invested.
So yeah, I DNF'd it, which is really an unpleasant surprise. I don't even care what happens next, that's how lost Suzanne Collins had me.

Also the whole idea that in such a different world being an ugly woman is still the worst thing possible was weird.

...more

To be honest, I often forgot it was a female main character written by a man, which is not always an easy thing to do.
The story is really good and makes you want to keep reading. I read this book in two sittings, and it's a long book, so you can guess how hooked I was. I thought the characters were well written, complex, layered, and the only trope I saw was a little bit of fatphobia (most of the real bad guys were fat and fat was coupled with being undesirable many times). There was a little lack of diversity too that annoyed me a little. But those two things are actually my only negative criticism about this book.
I loved the main character. She was a pretty sweet (even naive at times) woman that had a lot of guts and adapted very quickly to everything life/the apocalypse threw at her. I loved the idea of a badass woman that chose Julie Andrews as a role model. That was a fun combination. She was both nurturing and tough. Honestly that was a very good female main character, we don't see so many of them.
(For the SK fans, there were at least a couple references to his universe, two of them were of The Stand which I would get why you'd want to compare this book to, but The Fireman is very different in a lot of ways). ...more

I like zombie movies like most people. What I like about them is that they are very brutal, and pretty much hopeless. I love how zombies, while being stupid and very slow (don't get me started on running zombies please) still win. Because they never stop. And because you and all the other good guys are nothing but future zombies. I have also read my share of zombie comics, eventhough I always end up stopping when a serie's gone for too long. In my opinion, you can't make a fiction about someone that survives 2I49037509357975 zombie attacks, at some point it does not work anymore.
But I have not read a lot of zombie novels, and the few I've read were more on the "dark comedy" side. So I did not expect that book. I read it because I read the special novella that the author did about a group of Browncoats during Comic Con fighting against the "uprising" (aka the beginning of the zombie apocalypse) and I thought it was well written. So I thought I should give the real serie a try.
I was expecting a book about zombies, it was not. There were zombies, and the story took place in a post-apocalyptic world, but it was mostly a political/journalistic novel. Eventhough there were action scenes and zombie killing, the whole plot was about the presidential election, and the brother and sister bloggers that got to cover it. It was a real surprise to me, I had not expected reading about journalism, politics and conspiracy. But it ended up being a very good surprise, because this novel was one of the most clever books of the kind I have ever read. Think the world ending would mean politics woul change ? Think again.
I loved the characters. Mainly George, the heroin, and her quest for truth. She was tough but she also had empathy and was really really clever, truly one of the best female leads I have found in fiction lately. Her brother Sean, who shares the spotlight and the narration with her, was also very interesting. He was supposed to be the dare-devil type but was so much more, very balanced too. All the other characters were very well layered, I would give a big shout out for "Buffy", she was a very amazing character, and I obviously loved the reference.
Anyway. That book was great and I will be reading the next one, I'm really curious to know what it is about. For this first book I listened to the audiobook and the two actors sharing the narration were very talented, I'm pretty upset the second audibook is not available. ...more

And if yoI'm seeing so many bad reviews for this book and I'm not surprised. How do you write a sequel to a 35 year old beloved classics ? You don't. And if you do, you'll end up disappointing so many people that have been loving and thinking about the first book for 35 years. I know that I would probably hate any sequel to my favorite books that I've read again and again, to those books that changed my life. Even if the sequel was really good, I would still probably hate it, because it would just not be the same experience.
Happily for me, I've only read The Handmaid's Tale last year. I loved it, but I've read it after watching the first season of the tv show and the book was not life changing for me. I love this story, and I loved the fact that not everything was explained, and I loved the fact that it was not a resistance story, just the story of someone trying to survive and to make sense of what was happening... And I knew when Margaret Atwood said she was going to publish a sequel that she could not do that a second time. A second book meant she had to answer all those questions. And it would mean that this book would not have the magic the first one had.
I've read The Testaments in one sitting. Anyone saying it's poorly written is not being fair. You can hate the story all you want, but Atwood knows how to write and this book is beautifully written. This novel is almost the exact opposite of the first one : where there was only one point of view, there are threee, where we did not get any news about the world outside Gilead, we actually have part of the story taking place in another country, where we only saw the politics through the eyes of a handmaid, we see them through the woman at the top of the food chain, where we had mostly no answer, we have a story with a true ending and all the answers we would ever want/need.
I really got attached to the three narrators. I thought they were very well written, full of flaws and qualities and very layered. I loved the story. Margaret Atwood had told us it was about the fall of Gilead, and I think she showed us perfectly how that kind of regime fall, not only from the outside, not only from the inside, but from both.
(view spoiler)[I loved Aunt Lydia's story the most. I loved that Atwood did not make a martyr out of her, or even a hero. She showed perfectly how someone can be part of something awful and one day decide it has to stop. I love how ruthless she was and how she used everyone like pawns. And I think what happened to poor Becka showed perfectly who Aunt Lydia was. She did not care about this sacrifice and did not care that she had to make Becka think it was her own idea to kill herself for the greater good. It was so cold, and so perfectly written.
