As an avidThank you to negalley.co.uk Penguin Random House Publishing for giving me a free copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review. As an avid fan of Jodi Picoult's literary prowess, I eagerly dove into "By Any Other Name," and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! In this exquisite novel, Picoult weaves a remarkable tapestry of engaging characters and intertwined timelines that kept me captivated from the very first page.
What truly sets this book apart are the characters. Each one is beautifully crafted, brimming with depth and complexity. Picoult's ability to bring her characters to life is unparalleled; I felt a genuine connection with Emilia and found myself deeply invested in their journeys. The emotional nuances and struggles she face resonate on so many levels, making it impossible not to root for her.
The intertwining timelines added an extra layer of intrigue and richness to the narrative. Picoult masterfully shifts between past and present, unraveling secrets and histories that shape the characters in profound ways. This storytelling technique not only kept me on my toes but also enhanced the emotional weight of the narrative—every twist and turn felt intentional and impactful.
As I reached the final pages, I was utterly gutted when the book came to an end. I could have easily spent more time with these characters, immersing myself in their world and unfolding stories. There’s a timeless quality to Picoult’s writing that leaves you yearning for more, and "By Any Other Name" is no exception.
In summary, this book is a testament to Jodi Picoult's extraordinary talent and her ability to tell stories that resonate long after you've turned the last page. If you’re a fan of richly developed characters and intricate plots, this is a must-read. I wholeheartedly give "By Any Other Name" five stars!...more

I would have loved this book when I was younger. Despite being aimed at a younger audience, I enjoyed it. Fletcher is a decent writer for children's fiction, I was sucked into this book very quickly. I loved the relationship between the two main characters, Maggie and Ivy.

This is my first book by Melissa Albert but I definitely think this is the best one so far. As someone who loves books dealing with witches and witchcraft, I absolutely loved this book. It was such a page turner. The book is told in two timelines however I found this easy enough to keep track of while reading the book. I don't think I have read a book like this in so long. Such an enjoyable read and I look forward to seeing what is next from Albert....more

I was quite disappointed by this book, I'm not going to lie. I felt the main character, Olive was slotted into most adult fiction stereotypes. Although when it came to the whole children topic, I have admit I did relate with Olive on this. However, I could not like Olive (however, this is why I haven't given the book one star, I do like when an author can make me feel something about a character) although I just wasn't interested in the storyline and found myself skipping through the audiobook at times....more

When I first saw this book up for review, I knew I just had to try it. It deals with the heartbreaking subject of child loss which, in the 21st Century, most people seem to treat it as a taboo subject. I think the author handled this sensitive subject in a brilliant way, I believe this is a brilliant book to start a conversation with children on baby loss and mental health. It is a lovely book to help adults guide the conversation of grief with young children. I hope this book gets picked up by a lot of parents and should be every school or library. I think it would be a brilliant resource and hopefully make miscarriage less of a taboo subject....more

When I requested this book, I didn't think of the title but I found a little funny when I realised what it was about given the pandemic we are living through right now. I feel because of the current pandemic, we will start to start to see a lot of novels like this one but I enjoyed this one. The storyline was interesting, this was the first book I have read that talked about men dying off, not women. Knowing that the author wrote this in 2018 makes it interesting because it is quite similar to what is going on now. I couldn't put it down....more

This is a lovely book with beautiful illustrations, I would definitely give this to read with a young child to help explain the coronavirus pandemic and those businesses affected by them, especially hairdressers. This was quite an interesting audiobook, it was full of themes I just love to read, gothic, mystery, historical fiction, it’s even set in the Regency period. Despite reading a lot of books that focused on everyday people afffected by Nazi Germany and WWII, I actually found this book to be a breath of fresh air in a genre that has so many different books in it. I don’t think I have ever read a book set in Paris during the war. Through studying History, I was given this idea that the French fell quickly to Nazi Germany, this book didn’t give this impression and I loved it. I feel like I have read so many retellings lately, I feel like they end up blending together. This was a nice surprise, the book had a unique premise and I really enjoyed reading it. The first part of the novel was a little slow to start however as I read the novel, the pace started to pick up. I noticed a few other reviewers mention a previous book by the author however this is my first book by Russell but I didn’t feel lost or confused. This had an interesting premise that quite frankly I was a little disappointed by when I finished the book. I thought that this premise was all over the place, the author attempts to build a world were the Roman Empire never fell however, there were mentions of other historical periods which didn’t really much connection to the Roman era, as a history student, this ruined me for me. Otherwise this book wasn’t completely terrible, it was decently written. The story at the beginning was good however, it appeared to drag in the second part of the book. The characters were well written and probably the only reason that kept me reading the book....more

This book was kind of an odd one for me, but in a good way. I didn’t feel like I was getting invested in the story. I didn’t think there was much there in terms of story telling however it was the narrator that kept me hooked to the book, the narrator sounded so much like Benedict Cumberbatch to me, I was shocked to find out that the narrator was indeed the author. However the second hand narrative that ran throughout the novel made the narrator sound so detached from the whole thing. However, this book does get three stars from because I thought it was well written, the prose was almost lyrical. ...more

This was an intimidating book, there is so much information crammed into it. But I think the author did a brilliant job of explaining everything so it's easy to understand. There is so much detail however, I felt I was able to catch up easily with the author.
