Fittingly, my journey with this book was very much like my journey with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend:
At start of book/show: I don't know about this. There are a lot of poop jokes, and this chick seems to be trying way too hard to get me/Josh to like her.
(At this point, I got on Goodreads to read some reviews and decide whether the book was worth my time, read a super crazy review/manifesto about how people should stop being so mean to poor J. K. Rowling, decided if this nutjob hated this book, it was probably something I would love, continued reading.)
Midway through book/show: I realize that the trying-to-hard thing is entirely the point, and she's using the poop jokes and sexual innuendo to say some really smart things about bullies, mental illness, society's messed up views of women, and being yourself. Become super impressed with Rachel Bloom (again). Laugh really hard.
End of book/show: Cry a little. Feel very grateful to have experienced it. Recommend it to others. (Sing "Stupid Bitch" over and over and over again in my head.)...more
