Melissa is so annoying and the story would be greatly improved with a different female lead. I wanted to love Tarian, but his motives and how much he cares for Melissa still aren't clear. The story itself had everything I love: Romeo and Juliet, vampires, enemies to lovers, and road trips. It had so much potential, but it fell flat with the characters. With likable characters and a tad bit more editing (and better spicy scenes), this would have been really close to a 5 star read for me.
When I said, "a tad bit more editing," here's a couple examples of word choices that I just hated:
"She undulated against him, pressing her breasts up against him."
"She closed her eyes, feeling a suspicious moisture gather behind her lids."...more

There were like 4 storylines and each one was interesting. This book was my introduction to the series and while I had to learn the characters quick, I feel like I was given enough information to understand what was happening. I really enjoyed it and would go back to read others in the series. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is because there was so much happening, I felt lost at times. Like if someone was to ask me what this book was about, I wouldn't be able to give them a two sentence response. It would take time to explain. ...more

2nd Read ~ 10 years later: 3 stars I really loved this series when I first read it. I caught it at the time where a few books were out and I had to wait like a year for the next one to come out. I don't think I ever finished the series (waiting a year between books can def take away some of the obsession with a series). Rereading the first one was like going back in time. It was a cozy read (because of the sentimentality of it), but I can definitely see how much I've changed in the years. The writing and characters are pretty juvenile, which is a little odd because the characters are supposed to be 16. I'm interested to see if the rest of the series is written like this or if it matures a little. I'm hoping for the latter because I probably wouldn't have liked this if I hadn't read it before....more

1. The writing was just silly. An example is how light affects the characters. Like the first time Hodge is introduced, Clary thinks he is misshapen, but he just has a bird on his shoulder. How dark is the library? Then when Clary is inside and the door opens, she is blinded by the natural light. Like she actually can't see anything. There are many other instances of silly writing.
2. Feminism does not exist in this book. At all. The men are toxic.
3. The amount of times Clary compares her physical looks to the only other female character, Isabell. Clary put herself down so much, that I had to keep checking that the author was female. None of that please.
4. I'm not giving spoilers, but iykyk the love triangle was awful and I very much didn't like it.
5. Was this Harry Potter? The wands/ steles? The broken glass? The Voldemort?
There are other things that bothered me, but I feel like it's nitpicking. It was kind of a fun book, just not sure if I'll continue the series....more
