She was a teenager swimming national champion and everyone saw her as the future Olympic gold medal winner. She loved music and was in a band called String Theory but her boy friend Dan didn’t support her in music. They broke up after she ran away from the wedding. She had great potential in her childhood and teenager now she, 30+ years old, sees herself as a loser stuck in her hometown, Bedford. She doesn’t see a reason to live any more so she decided to take her own life.
For some reason, she made to the Midnight Library, where she meets with the old librarian, Ms. Elm. With the help of this Ms. Elm, she went back to her old life she regretted and found many things she have been guilty of were not her fault at all. It’s her perspective and distorted thinking that made herself miserable. Since then, a lot of her regrets are gone.
Then she also regretted a lot of potential different lives she was able to live in. From the midnight library, she went to many of these lives. She dreamed of being a geologist, which turns out to be miserable life inside arctic circle (the arctic or the polar region). She was almost killed by a polar bear. The real celebrity life isn’t the life with fame she has naively imagined. She was so mad and hurt hearing her brother Joe was dead from overdose. From those experiences, she is screaming for life and is ready to live. She is alive. She started from the same place where she wanted to commit suicide and ended at the same place where she wanted to live again. She found strength in herself. It’s still the same physical world but since she changed, everything has changed.
The plot is intriguing that it starts from the messy and turmoil life of Nora and counts down from there till Nora decided to kill herself, and then the different lives in the midnight library and final enlightening. However, the language use, wisdoms and imagination are little bit of lack luster and didn’t really impress me. It’s a quick weekend read, and you might be able to pick up one or two things here and there but I would say a quick easy read. There are not many places you stop and wow or start pondering.
There are some life wisdoms in the book. It fits the current times because mental illnesses and depressions have become a prevalent problem. And this book takes a peek of how that comes about and provides a perspective on how people can change themselves. If however, for that purpose, readers would be much better off reading a CBT book, like Feeling Good by David Burns....more
