Captive Paradise: A History of Hawaii

An excellent history of Hawaii. The middle third was rather dry, full of small intrigues and plenty of sad tales of Hawaiian royal family woes. The last third picked up steam gradually, and I was excited to read the final chapters. This is a superbly researched book and flows well for the most part. I have a deep love for Hawai'i, having been born there but only able to visit a few times in my life so far. It is a beautiful and mesmerizing place - but the tragic elements of human history there are quite palpable to anyone paying attention. This book very faithfully relays this duality, I recommend it highly to anyone unfamiliar with the unique history of this unlikely US state.

Need to finish this book. The first 1/3rd was very interesting but it has been rather dry history since then. The tragic end is coming up, will try to clear this from my to-do list in the next few weeks.
