2ish stars.
Eh. Been there done that. Good pace, quick read, sporadically suspenseful, everything one expects from the genre... and not much else. There are lots of recycled plot elements from Girl on the Train- it might as well have just been titled The Girl on the Cruise Ship (not that the current title is that much different).
Same case of unreliable witness- in GOTT it was a victimized, depressed woman driven to alcoholism, insomnia, obsession and stupidity. In WIC10 it's a victimized, anxiety-ridden woman driven to high levels of alcohol consumption, insomnia, obsession and stupidity.
In both books I got to the big reveals and thought to myself, "That was it?" With the suspension of belief we're required to enter into, might as well make it worth it, right? Here there were some pretty ludicrous plot twists but then they ended up not even being cool enough to be worth it. I could have made it so much more interesting- so much wasted potential. I should probably be a consultant to mystery/thriller writers in the future.
There's literally nothing else distinguishing enough to justify continuing this review.

I hope you like it, too. Either way, it's a really quick read and it did pound my pulse in a couple spots, so it's not like it's not worth reading, just not quite the level I was hoping for.

Ha, yes, perhaps, but what can I say? Books such as this are a guilty pleasure even when executed mediocrely.

Hmm. Just saw a couple of reviews that liked it. I have a hard time with unlikable narrators--I was intrigued by the anxiety component (because it can be used to such good effect for unreliable) but obsession, alcohol and stupidity? I don't think so.
