I don't know. I think this story had some real loveliness. I smiled and laughed here and there. I even teared up a little...three times to be exact. And I suspect I'd respond with a broader range of emotions if I were watching it played out onstage.
Based on some of the stage direction, I believe there is a great deal of magical hijinks and special-effects-type shenanigans in the show. After a while (somewhere around the 150 page mark), I was able to picture the story happening in a theatrical setting, and the stage direction hinted at some pretty ambitious hocus-pocus. The whole story sort of shifted for me then, and I was able to enjoy it. Plus, in the stage production, the actors should supply a lot of what is missing in print, specifically, a fullness of emotion with facial expressions and physical gestures. They'll do what actors do best, decide what their characters' motivations are and convince the audience their onstage relationships and actions are authentic.
Those who've scored tickets to this event are some seriously lucky SOBs.
