This is going to be one of three stand alone spinoffs set in this world, but the next book (that will be a 2018 release) will be the final and sixth book of Celaena/Aelin's ToG story. Yeah, it's all messed up. I was hoping for the conclusion of ToG before the spinoffs! :'[

Stacy I had forgotten you are a fellow Chaol fan! I'm not sure I've ever been as frustrated with an author as I am with SJM in her treatment of him. Books 1 & 2 & a few of the novellas are by far my fav in the series. It's been downhill since book 3 for me. But I'm sticking with this series to the bitter end since I've invested so much time in it. ;) I really hope my favorite character gets some good representation in Tower of Dawn!

Yeah, Chaol was always my favorite character (until Manon came along), and I still get so sad thinking about what became of him. EoS infuriated me so much that he was only worth mentions! But hopefully this installment makes both of our hearts happy! <3 xo

Blimey, prepare to laugh at me cuz I definitely laughed at myself just now. So, as someone who has never read this series (read the blurb of the first book and decided it wasn't for me (I marked it as "maybe-to-read" in a very generous sense, it's a shelf I dub in my mind "aware-of-but-most-likely-won't-be-reading",) I think for the longest time, when skimming through other people's review, somehow I was completely able to reach to the wrong conclusion that Celaena and Aelin are 2 different people lmao.

So when I saw what you wrote... I was like... "huh... this is actually kind of interesting? For once we are getting 2 girls fighting for 1 guy instead of 2 guys fighting for 1 girl? Just that apparently neither ended up with this dude?" rofl. Whelp, obviously it's not the case cuz in the end there was only ever just that one girl. I just figured my misunderstanding might be entertaining for some people so decided to share. xP

Oh my gosh! This is the best! I can completely understand you thinking that! I never feel comfortable calling her just Aelin now, so I always call her both! Hahaha! God, I love this comment, Sam!

Happy reading, love! 💗xo

Nafeeza So much THIS! I will <3 Chaol for life. Like you I am very skeptical. I just don't like being manipulated as a reader. I have sworn off The ACOTAR series as a result and will probably finish this only because I have invested a lot of time and money in this series. But Fingers crossed it is good. :)

Thanks, Nafeeza. Yeah, this fandom is for sure something else. ACOTAR is for sure better, but I wont lie, the manipulation is still there, even though it works for mine and most people's favor. Hopefully Chaol's story can take this bitter taste out of my mouth. <3 xx

Lema This review represents me! *slo-mo clapping*
On the bright side, there shall be no cringe-worthy scenes of Roaelin PRAISE THE LORD! but I'm not even sure I want to read this book (because no Manon and no abraxos) and I honestly don't like Chaol that much, and everything will probably be fixed by the end with him making lovey dovey eyes with Nesryn... I guess thunder is not likely to strike again as it did with the wonderful surprise that was ACOMAF :P

Oh! That's good to know! Because for a split second I thought I accidentally hit the "delete" instead of "edit" before attempting to edit my reply. I found a typo that may make reading the sentences not making sense. I was saying "the statement wasn't* applying to you to begin with" or something along the lines. Did not remember the exact wording. For another split second I thought I royally offended you and was really panicking. We're good? *pleads*

Caitlin Ford As much as I loved Chaol, I gave up on this series after QoS. I also hated ACOTAR. Maas loves romanticizing abuse and I'm tired of it.

message 18: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie "Why does sjm hate Chaol so much?"
Right?? Will there never be justice for him? I don't understand why she creates some of these characters just to shit all over them. *mourns the Chaol illustration we should have had if Chaol was treated properly EVER*

message 19: by emma (new)

emma "ASOIAF wannabe" THAT WAS MY EXACT THOUGHT WHEN I SAW THIS! I'm not a fan of this series but the cover caught my eye because it looks like a ripoff version of A Dance With Dragons

message 20: by BookThief (new)

BookThief I too thought that there would be a limping Choal on the cover. *dramatically sobbing*

message 22: by Zain (new) - rated it 4 stars

Zain Otoom I agree! I feel like anything revolving Chaol isn't worth it. Like why do you hate him so much???

destiny ♡ howling libraries TBH I haven't even started this series yet and I'm still pissed over this cover. It's ugly as hell and doesn't match the aesthetic of the other books AT ALL.

sofia (sam willows) I hate this cover so much! It's truly a Game Of Thrones wannabe.
Look, I think the reason they didn't put a disabled Chaol in the cover is because he's going to be *magically* healed by the end. Also, they probably thought of how it might spoil someone. I'm not defending or attacking that decision, just theorizing. What do you think?

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

shit i agree like idg y sjm hates chaol sm?? tbh im damn scared for this book cos when sjm gets excited its honestly not good news(cos y is she excited abt writign about a character she hates??) n idk wat to say since sjm also said chaol isnt the main character in his own book wtfff n she also ruined him in the short story by making him moon over rowaelin n also be some kinky dude

i love chaol sm n honestly this hurts

Vasilisa Such a great review! It makes me so happy that Chaol got his own novel and that it was very well written based on your opinion. :)
I haven't read the book because it didn't come to mail yet but I JUST CAN'T WAIT anymore!! Chaol is my absolute favorite character in ToG, I've been in love with him since the book one, and I really hope that more people will appreciate him after this one.

You are just too kind, Vasilisa! Yeah, I am beyond words with happiness that Chaol got an AMAZING book, which was totally the book he deserved. I am so in the same boat with you, and have loved Chaol and rooted and shipped him since the very first! I hope you absolutely love this one when you read it! You should gush with me after, because I have no one to talk to about this book and I'm going to explode! Haha! Happy reading, love! 💖xx

V. A Court of Wings and Ruin is NEW ADULT/EROTICA but Goodreads editors won't tell you to include it in the choice awards Great review, Melanie! I love how detailed your review is.
I have some commentsMe, being the perverted person that I am, was a little disappointed by this, especially with how much I love Chaol.
I have lost respect for SJM "listening to her fans" because JK Rowling always writes whatever she pleases and would never change because the clamoring of her fans.
I have always said that SJM should write whatever she pleases, including sex scenes, but it's the publishing company (crass and vulgar company) and the book stores who should be more resposible and keep the sex scenes in the adult section. Less sex in TOD, doesn't change the fact that ACOMAF was one of the most popular books in the erotica section of goodreads last week and it won't change the fact that EOS is not suited for YA. Bloomsbury and Harper Collins should open their New adult section, advertise the sexual content and then everyone will win. Readers who like sex scenes will even buy more books, and the readers who prefer clean reads can stay away. Some kids will stay away from it, others will even buy it more! Also I think SJM writing without being the best out there is mature enough and beautiful enough to impress adult fantasy readers.
Unfortunately most parents think of YA as a genre that is free of sex and a lot of them didn't know about the erotic content of EOS and ACOMAF, ACOWAR so it's too late now to tone down the sex. Kids will have to read EOS to get to this book, right? And EOS isn't YOUNG ADULT it's NEW ADULT. It doesn't help at all making TOD less sexual. If anything it looks ableist. So Chaol can't enjoy sex because his condition? Why being all graphic with Rowan, and not with Chaol?
MY sources tell me that the sex scene is very Crown of midnight which is great but still I will keep doing my best to spread the word that SJM books are adult/new adult because I have received reports of a 9 year old reading EOS and 12-13 YO reading ACOMAF. As a rape survivor I think it's the best to keep children safe to keep erotic content out of the young adult section of libraries. Child molesters use pornography to lure their victims and having a popular overhyped EROTIC/new adult series in the YA section of libraries and bookstores can be a potential risk for kids. Imagine they find someone willing to buy them a book that appears safe and sexless. It's dangerous territory.

So if any of the Bloomburry plants (I know you exist and I know some of you are stalking reviews) is reading this, please know that you are putting kids in danger when you send erotic content to the YA section of libraries and bookstores. If you don't want to create a new adult imprint at least advertise as adult fantasy fiction.

Melanie Veronica PARENTAL GUIDANCE ALERT: A Court of Mist and Fury is an EROTICA/NEW ADULT but most booktubers won't tell you wrote: "Great review, Melanie! I love how detailed your review is.

Thank you for this discussion, Veronica! I always make a point to talk about the sex in all of SJM's books, so hopefully adults will see and take note. I also always list any of her books with sexual content as New Adult, because it totally isn't Young Adult! Haha! I hope more people see your posts and realize the mature nature of these books. 💖xo
