I'm beginning to realize how much #metoo is changing the way I read. There is a lot of sexual violence in this novel, treated in a pulp-fiction-y way that even a year ago might not have bothered me as much as it does now. These days my tolerance for sexually violent scenes is significantly lower than before. I'm quicker to judge a scene as exploitative rather than necessary.

Objectively I can say this is a unique novel, where important themes weave through the story in witty and imaginative ways. But I felt unhappy as I read, and maybe even a little unsafe. These weren't feelings that I wanted to feel at the moment.

In the first paragraph for instance a refugee on the run is incinerated and picked up by a robotic trash collector, and it's written with a matter-of-factness that pulled me in right away...it's not satire, not pathos, it's just the way things are in this world. I'm intrigued."

Joseph Schreiber Thanks for the warning. If this is a subscription title I have one on the way. Pulp-fictiony violence holds no appeal for me and never has. Will approach this with caution.

Lark Benobi Well Joseph do give it a chance. I think you'll know by the end of the first chapter if it's for you. It is deeply imaginative but I'm not in the mood and may never be in the mood again to read about sexual assault even if it's reasonable given this is a story about an apocalypse after all.

Amy Just came across a rec on this from BookRiot and how nice that you've checked it out for me already!

Carrie Scott Yeah, that scene where he has sex with the 14 (!) year old that has nothing to do with the plot was bananas. Some parts of this book we're deeply disturbing
