really liked it
bookshelves: 2018, audio, classic, hoopla

How many times have I seen a version of A Christmas Carol? Probably too many times to count, but I can try:

- A stage version at least half a dozen times
- The Disney version with Scrooge McDuck
- The Disney version with Jim Carrey
- A Muppet Christmas Carol
- Scrooged with Bill Murray
- Probably more that I am forgetting

Finally, I have taken it upon myself to read the source material! Did I like it? Two words: BAH, HUMBUG!

In Dickens-ese that means I did. I have enjoyed pretty much every adaptation I have seen and, in general, they seem very close to the original story. So, I have no complaints!

One thing you will find with the book is that each ghost has one or two more scenes that they show Scrooge. It seems like adapters of the book have generally agreed on which stories to leave out as I don't think I was familiar with any of the "new" tales.

Do you love Christmas stories? Classics? Adaptations of this story? I am not saying you should read this, I am saying you pretty much have to!

Lars Dradrach Nice review, Christmas Carol is an all time favourite, especially the muppet version which we have to see every year, just like you I’ve decided to check out the original, starting tomorrow with an audio version by Simon Prebble, should make commuting the last days before Christmas enjoyable

Amber There's also the flintstones one, the mister magoo one and more. I loved the Disney one with scrooge mcduck the best.

Audio is a great way to go with this one. I look forward to seeing what you think! Enjoy!

I don't remember those, but Mr Magoo would be a perfect Scrooge!

My favorite is the 1951 Alastair Sim version which is sometimes called Scrooge and other times called A Christmas Carol.

What great acting by a master.

The Muppets are second to me.

Audrey That Scrooge McDuck one gave me nightmares for years.

I feel like at some point I did see an old classic movie version, too. Maybe that's the one???

Seriously! Disney did not mess around with scary content sometimes!

Judith Johnson Alastair Sim's my favourite too, though I love the Bill Murray one too! I was lucky enough to see Alastair Sim in the West End of London, when he was playing Captain Cook to Wendy Craig's Peter Pan.

Sounds like I am going to need to hunt down this Alastair Sim version!

The Alistair Sim version is playing here in Canada on CBC Friday the 21st.

It gets aired every Christmas here in Canada.

Wish I had gotten to see him on stage, his style leans more towards being more of a stage actor than movie actor in my estimation.

That's what I love about old movies - they always have more of a stage feel to them.

That must have been awesome!

Thank you! I did notice several audio versions - including some that were more radio play than just a reading of the book

Matthew NOTE: I just watched the new version on FX with Guy Pearce as Scrooge. Very different, very dark, but very good!

We watched several versions this season; will have to look for that one.

Joseph Anyone see the Patrick Stewart version?

Audrey Joseph wrote: "Anyone see the Patrick Stewart version?"

Yes, that was one we watched. It is quite faithful; I liked the portrayal of Fred in that one.

Audrey I just rewatched "Mickey's Christmas Carol." I saw it in the theaters in 1983ish, and it gave me nightmares for years.

It strays far from the source material, but is an interesting take.

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Matt.. There's a great film titled, The Man who created Christmas, which is the story of how Dickens wrote the book. Complete with Chris Plummer who plays Scrooge, it's well done and worth seeing!

Awesome! Thanks for the rec - I will keep my eye out for it!

Audrey That was a great movie; I agree.

Merry Christmas, Amelia! 🎄😃

Terri Stuhltrager My favorite movie is the version with George C. Scott. Other versions are Henry Winkler in An American Christmas Carol and, believe or not, Vanessa Williams in Diva's Christmas Carol that was recently released on DVD.

Wow! Interesting! I have not heard of the second two you mentioned - thanks for the recs! 😃🎄

Joseph Has anyone ever heard the Audible version by Tim Curry? I also just saw the FX version with Guy Pearce.
