What a satisfying read. Nothing happens, in the most fascinating way imaginable. Just as I wrote that last sentence I remembered the feeling of watching My Dinner with Andre for the first time. This novel gave me a similar feeling--happy to be alive, happy to be literate, happy to have time to read and to think. It's that kind of book.

Nice review Lark. With this and The Memory Police being first published back in the pre-internet days of the '90s, I wonder if that says something about the increasing complexity of writing to fit our increasingly complex lives.

Marcus it's so interesting you'd write this just now. Just a few minutes ago I stopped reading the books I was reading--all excellent newly published novels, but kind of complicated and prose-y and exquisite--and instead I've picked up Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino, a book that I'm expecting will be nice and simple.
