it was ok
bookshelves: sci-fi, classic, authors-i-want-to-read

Man, what a snoozefest. So disjointed, little character development, the only female character with more than one line was such a shrew.

sonicbooming I've always wondered about this SF classic, let us know how you are enjoying it throughout. Drop a few lines/impressions if you would, love to hear your opinion on it.

Dan Varrette If you're looking for character development and favourable portrayals of females, why are you reading classic science fiction? I view this series as being about ideas/concepts, rather than a rich story about human experience. This is often the case in sci-fi from this period. This is twenty years before The Female Man.

What did you think of the other elements outside of character/plot? I'm still uncertain whether I'll read this series. I read the first prequel and thought it was okay.

Jax I liked the idea of PsychoHistory and i REALLY wished that Asimov spoke more of that, i feel like he had all these great ideas but they don't come to fruition or if they did, then they were lost of me (this is entirely possible). There are characters that just disappear and you're like "but..", mostly Asimov ends up explaining what happened to the previous chapters characters in the next chapter as the books moves through time but why invest all that reading to hear about the outcome as a sidenote?

I found it to be a kinda social commentary on religion/statescraft, the power of mythology to create society but..meh, i've read better books on the same subject.

You're right, I shouldn't have read this book for favourable portrayals of females but any one of these dudes in the book could have been a woman instead, he's writing the future after all.

also, he references the 'Vandyke' style facial hair which I just found to be awkward.

Jax that being said, I think I can see why some people think it's great (I also think that this largely depends on what other sci-fi you've read and when you read it)

It's not a terrible book, it's just not for me. I like Whyndam sci fi :)
