Mark Twain's world famous novel on the adventures of a boy, Tom Sawyer and his pals Huck Finn, Ben Harper and Becky Thatcher. The book is centred around To Sawyer indeed a representation of a wayward but typical youth of the day, who comes across almost has an anti-hero to my today reading sensibilities. One thing that this book really captures well is the 'alternate reality' that children create and live in, a feat that many writers before and since struggled to convey. They are plentiful racist terms, references, ideas etc around Native Americans and African Americans, but they were common ideologies and parlance of the day, and if anything, are a testament to how the word has evolved since. I still struggle to give this more than a Two Star, 4 out of 12, as ultimately the only reason to read and reread this is its literary historical context.

My current re-read will definitely see an upswing in that rating :)

Gavin Armour No doubt HUCKLEBERRY FINN is the better novel...;-)

On my TBR :)

Besmet El Manel I have re-read the book on 2021 and although The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is my favorite, this title still remains a piece of literary art in my eyes. The writing style, the arc, the pace, the morals to name just a few are unique in the way they’re conveyed. What fascinated me the most was the characters’ development. I do understand your rating, though. I have been disappointed by some classics and I felt awfully guilty about it 😅

Thank you for such a though provoking response :)

Rosh Great point about Tom Sawyer being an anti hero, Baba. I've read the book only in my childhood, but based on my memories, I think you've got that label right.

I need to fix this book entry on Goodreads - the hyphenated title is making me cringe! Will do it when I'm at the comp.

OMG yes please fix the book title Rosh, it is currently awful! Also -barnes-noble-leatherbound-classics-series need to be completely removed.

Thank you so much, my fave Librarian.

P.B. Flower I have read many Mark Twain books during school days. Back then, I didn't know any better and only focused on the message it had to give at the end. Because that was what mattered in the exams! I might feel differently if I read them now.

message 10: by Rosh (new) - rated it 4 stars
